I’m trying to keep my excitement in check, but it is hard, especially when you look at our schedule compared to the Rocks. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learned about being a baseball fan it’s never get too confident until you know for sure that it’s safe to. We’re not there yet.
Having watched the Rockies games over the last few days, it is very clear to see that several of your umpires, Dan Iasogna in particular, seem to have something against the Rockies. There have been many missed calls, obvious ones at that, that have gone against the Rockies in key moments. I don’t know the reason behind it, but a bias exists.
It may stem from an incident on Aug. 24 involving Angel Campos. Another possibility, which I hope is not the case, would be an effort by Major League Baseball to keep the small-market Rockies out of the playoffs.
This is an issue that must be addressed if the league and its umpires want to keep their good reputation. Please do so quickly.
Your welcome…now off to Boston. Falcons need some help in the secondary tomorrow and they asked if I could play nickel back. Sure, I said…why not.
Fired up folks…
Oh, I also do the weather. Rain should stop about 7AM…and clear up with sunny skies for the Braves game vs. the Nationals. Weather will not stop this team of destiny…(Derek Lowe, maybe…)
Nothin like a day of victory in Washington, help from the Cards, and reading Lentz’s ridiculous posts
Yes today or should I say yesterday was a good day. 2 and 1/2 back with 8 games to go. Win lose or draw this year this team has shown heart and receliance when the odds were against them. This team was good this year and theyre gonna be great next year…
After we win Sunday and Monday…and with the Rockies losing (again) Sunday and off on Monday…we will only trail by 1 game. Each team will have 6 games left…and who has the better chance than the hottest team in Baseball? I did not think so. That’s right! We will make the post season and go far into the post-season…just my thoughts, though.
I will also be availble to pinch hit if the Braves need someone…except on Saturday’s, of course. Do think I am a better option the Johnson or Norton.
I was thinking…the perfect ending to the regular season would be the following:
-Finish tied with the Rockies to force a 1-game play-off in Atlanta.
-Win game with a walk-off grand slam to not only win the play-off berth, but to end the grand slam futility they Braves have experienced this year.
Not trying to be negative, but Lowe worries me against that Dunn/Zimmerman combo. Heck, he worries me against Pete Orr if he has that flat sinker crap going. If I’m Bobby, I have Medlen or KK on a high red alert at the very first sign of trouble with Lowe. We’ll worry/talk about the stankin Fish after tomorrow’s game, but Lowe is the topic right now.
Braves first two games against the Marlins have a 1p.m start time. What’s up with that ?! If they wanted the Ted to be sold out it won’t because, The average fan will be at work.
With the Braves starting their game 1:35 minutes before the Rockies first pitch…it would be important (again…) to jump on the lowly Nationals early and often. With Lowe going…I am sure we are going to need as many runs a as we can create…So when the Rockies start their game…they can look at the scoreboard along with their fans…and say…oh $#@!, here we go…again!!!
Not trying to be negative, but Lowe worries me against that Dunn/Zimmerman combo –TnBrian
Zimmerman is 7-for-29 with one homer, three RBI, one walk and 10 strikeouts against Lowe, and Dunn is 3-for-22 with one RBI, two walks and six strikeouts.
Folks, I have been a Braves fan since they came to Atlanta in the late 60’s, and I have been through just about every high or low with this team. While I don’t espouse to know as much about baseball as many of my friends here, I do have a deep engrained love for this franchise.
As lethargic as our offense has been at times, as bad as Soriano has looked as of late, and in spite of the “duh” factor with some of Bobby’s moves (I never said he was perfect, just that I love him!) this year, I still think we will probably fall a bit short.
Doesn’t mean I don’t have hope, and that I am not cheering up until the final game, but I am a realist.
But DAMN this has been fun lately!!!! Remember the Cardinals, White Sox and Phillies of the past few years. ANYTHING is possible!! And with our rotation, a little luck, and we could be cheering for several more weeks.
Though I will not be on as regular as I have been in the past, when you are cheering for our boys, remember that the stubborn cuss out in Utah is cheering right along with ya!
And the funny thing is, in the next 10 days, I will be in Utah, Wyoming, back to Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah again, Nevada again, Idaho and back again to Utah. 2500 miles roughly, not counting side trips.
This is really getting fun. My only goal is to see the Braves in the Playoffs this year. 2009 is the Summer my 8 yr old son fell in love with baseball through the Atlanta Braves. After taking him to over 20 games this year is it to much to ask to take him to his first playoff game in a couple of weeks? I hope not because I sure would enjoy it. C’mon D Lowe.
I have caught the late night infomercial “Ultimate Rock Ballads” a few times now with Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon and Amy Motta. It is now my second favorite show to Diner’s, Drive-in’s and Dives! Everytime the Whitesnake clip comes around, I think of you and smile!
The Braves are 50-30 since June 28, a 100-win pace if they did it over a 162-game season. It was the second-best record in the National League in that period behind Philadelphia (51-30 before Saturday).
Someone asked Cox if his team was really that good, to play like a 100-win team that long.
“We’re pretty good right now,” he said, in a tone that said, darn right. “We had some additions [since midseason]. We added [Nate] McLouth, moved [Martin] Prado into the lineup, [Adam] LaRoche. …”
Cox forgot to mention the biggest improvement: the subtraction of a certain former right fielder….
Ah what a day. Got soacked to the bone watching the Hokies run Miami right out of Lane Stadium. It’s always extra loud there when it’s raining, for whatever reason. It will have been well worth whatever debilitating cold I get this coming week to witness that stomping.
Also read up on how the Braves took care of business today & got some help from the Cards this evening. It’s really looking like it may happen. It’s still a long shot for it to happen, but the Braves are keeping up the pressure on them every day. They may crack yet!
Hahahaha, this semi-close end to the season is really giving us a lot more blog hits than expected. Time for more banner ads for white teeth, Jay Leno and the Sunday paper.

Ok, guys. Lets not get a head of ourselves…
Marlins still want to piss on our parade. If we walk out of that series 2 games back or closer, then we’ll start the World Series talks, but for now, lets count our blessings and not tempt the Baseball Gods. Lets finish the season strong folks!
I hope yunel takes Livan out tonight and serves him up tequila all night. If he gets Livan drunk enough he can convince him he is back in cuba. Hopefully yunel will give him a dyslexic Tom Tom that tells him key west is 90 miles away.
Why stop at the WC? They have climbed to within 5 of the division. It’s an even crazier posibility, but the there has been a recent history of NL East division leaders collapsing. Granted that was the Mets & they make an art out of choking.
Time for more banner ads for white teeth, Jay Leno and the Sunday paper.
Huh. I get ads for something with “Bank on it!” written on it (A lotto ad, I think?), an ADHD medication and Range Rovers. I figured the blog ad meister had been reading Tomhawkin posts and my mind to know that I really want a Rover. At least it thinks my teeth are white.
After going 38-14 at home since Tracy took over May 29, the Rockies have lost three of five on this nine-game homestand, allowing the surging Braves to inject some drama into the wild-card race.
“We’re still ahead,” Jimenez said. “That’s what matters. No pressure, we’re still ahead.”
So all of their remaining games are at home? Not good.
Provided that all of the remaining teams against which the Rockies play actually play their regular starters and try to win the games…the Braves should have a big advantage in remaining schedule. The possibility of having just a mere 2 less losses over the next week is there…
WillinVa, Guilty as charged. I’m glad I was wrong, very glad to be honest. They really played a strong game overall. I didn’t think Stinespring had it in him to call a good game today, but he did.
I knew Foster would get the D going sooner or later, because he has the track record. Stinespring I had little confidence in & probably don’t to a large degree now. They have the horses to have a very good offense, but the offensive staff I’m not so sure knows what to do with that much talent at once.
Braves first two games against the Marlins have a 1p.m start time. What’s up with that ?! If they wanted the Ted to be sold out it won’t because, The average fan will be at work.

the Braves are going to “dump salary” or any other tactic to not keep J Vasquez. Only the Braves would entertain the idea of letting him go and then searching for someone that does half as good a job and paying them twice as much OR giving up the entire Gwinnett team for him!
Hopefully they’ll be able to look back at this and laugh, but during the Braves 5 game losing streak between Sep 2 and 6 the Rockies won 4 games (Rox also won Sep 9th, which was when Soriano blew that gem Hanson was throwing in Houston).
In any event, Lowe can’t afford his usual antics of going 5 innings and giving up 4-5 runs for the series finale. And the offense can’t afford to give Livan a Jason Schmidt type start. Beat up the Nats like you’ve been doing.
And finally a quick look ahead to the Marlin series that could either keep the momentum going or kill it in it’s tracks (assuming they can sweep the Nats):
Sanchez (3-7, 4 ERA) vs. JJ
VandenHurk (2-2, 4.4 ERA) vs. Huddy
Nolasco (12-9, 5.3 ERA) vs. Vazquez
Scott (players love me...GM's and owners fear me...) Boras...

If the Rockies go 4 – 5 (Which they most likely will)
The Braves need to go 7 – 1 to tie and 8 – 0 two win the WC…
Government education has really paid off for you…as these figures are mostly incorrect (flawed)…
Rockies have only 7 games left…not 9. Braves do have 8 games left…and in order to tie them…all we need to do is to lose 2 games less than they do…down the stretch…and in order to win Wild Card outright…we need to lose 3 less than the Rockies…in finishing out the regular season.
Example…
Rockies go 1 – 6…Braves need to go no worse than 4 – 4…to tie them…
Rockies go 2 – 5…Braves need to go no worse than 5 – 3…to tie them…
Rockies go 3 – 4…Braves need to go no worse than 6 – 2…to tie them…
Rockies go 4 – 3…Braves need to go no worse than 7 – 1…to tie them…
Rockies go 5 – 2…Braves need to go no worse than 8 – 0…to tie them…
I must say that baseball is the greatest sport….. Never becomes tomorrow and tomorrow becomes a prayer to God. We all abandon ship with one foot in the boat or one eye glued to the ticker. What makes baseball so good is all our foes are too stubborn to admit defeat.
Who do we catch first...the Rockies or the Phillies?
September 27th, 2009 3:22 am
Strange and remote as it may be…the fightin’ Phillies are folding almost as fast as the fadin’ Rockies. Both teams have only gone 5 – 5 in their last 10 games. Which brings me to this. Are they…the Phillies of 1964, the Met’s of the last few years…or what? If the Phillies only go 3 – 5…to finish the season and the Braves go 8 – 0…(improbable, I know…but fun to look at, never the less!!!) then the Braves will tie the Phillies for the National League East Division title!
The Phillies magic number is 4. However they have been stuck on that number a few days now. The Rockies magic number for the Wild Card is 6.
My, how the pendulum has swung…and is maybe holding camp over the Braves currently.

I could have done better. All I based these on was the post on the Rockies, and the Rockies and Braves need for 90 wins… But thanks for posting the correct version.
The Braves are 50-30 since June 28, a 100-win pace if they did it over a 162-game seasonDOB
Tomahawkin……….the Braves are playing winning baseball DESPITE having Bobby Cox as a manager Lentz
So, pretty much Lentz is saying the Braves would be a 120 win club without Booby Cox? Hmmm…..Funny that post by Lentz was posted right after DOB’s game story.
Btw, too bad you didn’t take that bet. I would love to take your money, though it would’ve gone to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I know you like to say “i told you so” but let me say so to you. The Braves have the pitching, and I told you they were thus capable of making such a run. So here we are, a week and a day left to go, down 2.5 games with this team showing no signs of letting go against a COL team that has a tough schedule….and you’re still bitching….
So let’s play Frank Wren’s mind for the offseason (assume Hudson is resignable)
would you:
1) trade Vazquez for a bat, keeping the rotation Huddy, JJ, Hanson, Lowe, KK?
2) trade Lowe/KK for a bat, even if it means eating some salary, so the rotation is Huddy, Vazquez, JJ, Hanson, Lowe/KK?
3) go with a 6 man rotation / KK in LONG relief to save starters arms?
4) re-sign LaRoche and trade Lowe cheap to free up salary?
5) Re-sign Soriano, Javy and Huddy to long term contracts, bring up Heyward and Freeman to play RF / 1B, trade Kelly Johnson and put Prado in at 2B, make Matt Diaz the starting LF, and sign McLouth to an extension?
I like the prospect of the following lineup / rotation:
McClouth CF
Prado 2B
Chipper 3B (so he’s had an off year, he’ll be back inform next season)
LaRoche 1B (give Freeman a little more seasoning time)
McCann C
Yunel SS
Heyward RF
Diaz LF
SP
Looks like we’ve got some Braves haters on here tonight. That means other teams are scared…I like that. I just hope those Braves haters aren’t a few of our own…
Just saw a replay on MLBN from the Mets v. Marlins game. Frenchy hits a single through the left side. David “Golden Child” Wright runs from second to home. However, about 20 feet from the plate, Wright jogs home. Frenchy is thrown out at second before Wright crosses the plate. Run doesn’t count.
I think next year will be very telling about what kind of a prospect Locke is, Rob. I know a lot of teams inquired on him last offseason (per Buster or one of them ESPN writers) and Pittsburgh really likes him…gotta count for something. OH STEVE
McCutchen for Locke & McLouth? I love McCutchen. He reminds me of a young Barry Bonds. We don’t need Locke. We have so many other good pitching prospects. Minor is looking good for example. We have a 7 man rotation if you count KK and Medlen. Locke is expendable to me. Sounds like a viable trade, except for the idea that Pittsburgh’s owner loves to steal cash, i.e. develop the young guys then ship them before arbitration/free agency for more young guys while he pockets revenue sharing dollars from the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, and Dodgers.
Man, this Braves team is looking deep from the top of the organization to the bottom because of all the excess starting pitching. Plus if Chipper retires and leaves $$ on the table, that frees up a ton of cash. It’s starting to look like a new golden era for this franchise, though I’m probably high off the past 2 weeks.
I think every Atlanta Braves fan deserves a restraining order against Mr. Norton
JUDGE: “Mr. Norton, what do you have to say in your defense?”
Greg Norton: “uhhhhhhhh, well, Your Honor, see, what had happened was…”
JUDGE: “SILENCE! You are hereby ordered to stay away from Atlanta, the Atlanta Braves locker room, Turner Field, Atlanta Braves fans, anything that could possibly be from Atlanta-to include Coca-Cola products, any fish that may have spent time at the GA Aquarium, and any newspaper that includes the letters in it that could spell out ‘Atlanta’ or ‘Braves’, do you understand, Mr. Norton?”
I like how all the Rockies fans are complaing about the home plate umpire, like he was only against them. He was squeezing the hell out of Wainwright as well. Wainwright was throwing tons of Maddux-esque 2-seam fastballs that were clearly strikes and they were being called balls.
Mitchie-san, just wanted to say I am very happy you have come back to the blog. I and three of my brothers served in the Army. One of my brothers died in Vietnam, and it is hard for any of us who have served to read Paul Lentz’s bile, but in this wonderful country we are given freedoms that other countries only dream of. His ignorance is pitiful, but know there are millions of Americans who are so grateful for fine young men like yourself. God bless you.

OK. I was not insulting your intelligence…though, now…I probably should. Since you could not tell…I was taking a ‘dig’ at public schools…
Just like on Saturday…the Braves need to go out…an put up a number for the Rockies to see. Gametime for the Braves is at 1:35PM…and Rockies is at 3:10PM…
At about the 5th or 6th inning of the Braves game…the Rockies game will start with the Cardinals. And once again…for the benefit of the Rockies players and their fans…it would be great, to have another insurmountable lead, over the crappy Nationals. They will be pressing and hopefully swinging at air against a Cardinal team…trying (we can only hope…) to secure the best record in the National League.
Deja vu…all over again…
Braves will be 1 game back after all games on Sunday…in the loss column!
DOB (September 26th, 2009 4:38 pm): “by the way, someone said it earlier and you were right — Hanson was rushing in the fifth when he gave up the homer. he admitted it after game, that he was being too aggressive because the Braves had a weather report that said it was going to start raining hard and not stop for the next day or so.
“He said he got away from what he was doing earlier in game, and that homer made him sort of snap back to attention and get back to his approach. McCann said he thought the entire team was sort of rushing after seeing that weather report. They wanted to make sure they got the game in.”

Braves run differential (runs scored vs. runs allowed) is almost over the magic mark…of + 100. Currently sitting on + 96. however, after today…they will have passed the century mark…which shows that this Braves team is going to be more than competitive when they make it to the post-season this year.
Nationals are horrible. May lose 110 games this year. Braves will win today…and the last 4 of the season against us.
What do they do with the Marlins (3 games)…is the real question. Should not be a real problem though…with Jurrjens, Hudson and Vazquez going.
I believe 91 – 71…is the number that will get them in.
8 games to go, 7-1 ties us ,8-0 wins it .If the guys can stay focued and not let pressure be their downfall,(Rockies are dealing with that now) we will do this. A September to remember with a October ticker tape parade. Go Braves.
Great morning here in Atlanta – the weather looks perfect for the final home stand. I am bummed that I will only be hanging out on the blog for the first hour of the game today, but fortunately the two guys I’ll be tutoring this afternoon are okay with me listening to the radio. I’ll also have my proxy in LA monitoring the blog for me so I’ll know what’s going on (and she’ll be in a good mood after not having to watch Aaron Corp last night). Last night I was planning on an early bedtime, but I could not resist the Cards – Rockies, and I was glad I did not. I would love to wake up tomorrow … never mind, don’t want RHR to get on me for jinxing the Braves.
Lentz….remember when you said KJ was going to take AB’s away from Prado and Moylan was going to fail in “critical situations”?? How’s that prediction working out???
Turner Field should be packed for the games this week, but it won’t be. Watching the Rockies play to a full house every night reminds me how bad ATL fans really are.
Yours of 12:29 a.m. Wait you can’t go. All the plants are gonna’ die – STRIPES. Sorry to see you’re putting it on the shelf like my pal GIL IN MECHANICSVILLE. You will be missed. Stick your head in once in awhile, and !bueno suerte!
I don’t know about anyone else here, but I want the Braves back in the playoffs so bad that I am just petrified about what is going to happen when they return home for the final 7 games with all of this renewed hope and pressure to catch the Rockies. Seems like that in the past, every time they started to feel that little bit of hope and extra pressure, they didn’t seem to play with the same amount of confidence. I almost wish they could just stay on the road for the remaining games. Almost.
Having these weird lines from movies crossing my mind constantly since I thought of old BO DIDDLEY yesterday and pulled out my 45’s. “He can’t be that pig-headed” “And pigs is almost as smart as dog’s”….”You just stay here with the pork boy, you might learn somethin’.” “Yeah BILLY, why’d you kiyll him?” “He was hacking on me” – YOUNG GUNS. “Maybe a few days in the stockade” – STRIPES. This blog and the pennant race are warping my mind.
What ails the ‘SKINS? They are the other team I began rooting for in 1952 after seeing SAMMY BAUGH’s last game. It’s been a mostly miserable journey unlike the majority of my 57 year excursion with the BRAVES. REDSKINS – Two decades of wishing and two of dispair sandwiched around one of hope and one of elation.

Have a great night folks! (you too Dunce!)

After taking him to over 20 games this year is it to much to ask to take him to his first playoff game in a couple of weeks? I hope not because I sure would enjoy it. C’mon D Lowe.

Also read up on how the Braves took care of business today & got some help from the Cards this evening. It’s really looking like it may happen. It’s still a long shot for it to happen, but the Braves are keeping up the pressure on them every day. They may crack yet!

I knew Foster would get the D going sooner or later, because he has the track record. Stinespring I had little confidence in & probably don’t to a large degree now. They have the horses to have a very good offense, but the offensive staff I’m not so sure knows what to do with that much talent at once.

Vazquez

Who do we catch first...the Rockies or the Phillies?
September 27th, 2009

LaRoche 1B (give Freeman a little more seasoning time)
McCann C
Yunel SS
Heyward RF
Diaz LF
SP
rotation:
Hudson – Javy – JJ – Hanson – KK
closer:
Soriano

“He said he got away from what he was doing earlier in game, and that homer made him sort of snap back to attention and get back to his approach. McCann said he thought the entire team was sort of rushing after seeing that weather report. They wanted to make sure they got the game in.”

Turner Field should be packed for the games this week, but it won’t be. Watching the Rockies play to a full house every night reminds me how bad ATL fans really are.

Do you think LENTZ realizes we’re just shining him on, and is just shining us back? He can’t be that pig-headed. After all, he IS a BRAVES fan.

Didn’t realize that. Well then, he deserves to be excoriated and pilloried from time to time.
