How Big are Those Losses Now against the padres and Rockies earlier in the season?

As Well as the AAA Pirates and AAA Nats Earlier in the season…?

I said it when we got clowned by the Pirates and Nats in April and May that those losses might be the deciding denominator in the season, as a matter of fact I was banking on it…

Omg I think I have become the “Coach” of the blog…Oh No…

O.K. Finally a start in SAN FRAN. Top of the first, CUBS 1 H no runs. GIANTS coming to bat. BTW BRAVES fans, the AA SAN FRAN. franchise is reloing to RICHMOND start in April 2010. 1.5 million refurb of the “DIAMOND.” with at least a two year lease. Maybe I can report on all that wonderful S.F. pitching I’ve been hearing so much about. Guys in the mold of that shlub LINCECUM. So I’ll be leaving your sorry azzez for the glorious GIANTS soon. Braves were all sitting around scarfing the spread while glued to TV sets in their underwear and sliding shorts and all the stuff they were beneath uniforms. None was showered, all watching the TVs in the clubhouse, most sets tuned to the Colorado-St. Louis game, a few to Fla-San Fran….

Vazquez said it’s probably been the best he’s thrown in his career, for an entire season. Said he knows there aren’t too many complete games these days, but he takes pride in trying to go eight or nine as often as he can (26 complete games in his career, all three Braves CGs this year, two in the past two weeks, nine-inning road jobs at St Lou and tonight)….

Prado has a nasty bruise on his leg and was hurting, but said it wasn’t going to keep him out of the lineup, not with everything that’s on the line for the Braves, etc.

Game story with quotes, unedited:

By DAVID O’BRIEN
dobrien@ajc.com

Washington — After beating good and bad teams to climb back into the wild-card race, the Braves can keep their dream alive by gorging wins during a potential end-of-season buffet against the worst team of all.

The Braves get to play the Washington Nationals seven times in their final 10 games, and began that stretch with a 4-1 win against the bumbling hosts in Friday night’s series opener at Nationals Park.

Javier Vazquez (15-9) threw a three-hitter for his second complete game in two weeks, and the Braves benefited from early Washington blunders en route to their 12th win in 14 games to keep the pressure on wild-card leader Colorado.

“Just another normal Vazquez start,” Cox said after the veteran went to 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in his past four starts, including complete games against the good (St. Louis) and the bad/ugly (Friday). “He’s finishing extremely strong.

So are the Braves, who sliced Colorado’s lead from 8-1/2 to 3-1/2 games in a two-week span. After their own win Friday, Braves players watched the end of Colorado’s game against St. Louis on televisions throughout the visitor’s clubhouse at Nationals Park.

“[The Cardinals] need to beat those mountain boys,” Cox joked as he kept an eye on the TV mounted to the wall in the manager’s office.

Alas, the Braves left disappointed after the Rockies pulled out a 2-1 win in the bottom of the ninth, retaining their 3-1/2-game lead over Atlanta.

“Right now it’s important for us to win every game, or at least as many as we can,” said Vazquez, who hasn’t lost a road game in more than three months. “We’re playing well. Guys are swinging the bats well and playing great defense.”

The bats and the defense haven’t been as consistent as the starting rotation, led by Vazquez, who has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 20 of 31 starts. He has all three Braves complete games.

“He’s been doing it all year long,” said Martin Prado, whose ninth-inning leadoff homer cushioned the lead to 4-1.

Vazquez, who had seven strikeouts with one walk, has allowed three hits or fewer in three of his past four starts. He notched his third 15-win season.

Prado missed the game in New York Wednesday after getting hit by a line drive below his left knee during batting practice. X-rays were negative, and he was back in the lineup with a nasty bruise Friday.

“Everybody’s happy and playing good baseball, pain is the last thing to worry about,” Prado said. “Whatever happens, whether we go home [after the regular season] or not, I want to think we gave our best effort.”

The Braves scored two unearned runs in the first, one on an error by second baseman Pete Orr and another when Garret Anderson’s routine fly fell between miscommunicating outfielders.

Cox is having fun

Cox signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday and announced he’d retire from managing at the end of the 2010 season. A writer asked him Friday about his plans to be an advisor in the Braves organization after he leaves the dugout.

Cox said he would spend much of his time as an advisor in the minor leagues and easily drop in on the Class A team at Rome, 15 minutes from his farm in Adairsville, or the Class AAA team in Gwinnett (Cox has a home in Marietta).

“It’s fun,” he said of working with affiliates throughout the organization.
“This isn’t fun?” the writer asked.

“Oh, this is fun,” Cox said. “More than you can imagine. It’s the best time you ever have in your career, the September run to the playoffs and the World Series … it’s incredibly fun. It gets the hair raising on your arms.”

Vazquez has two Z’s, more K’s

Vazquez has five or more strikeouts in each of his 31 starts this season, the fourth-longest streak of that kind since 1954, according to Stats Inc.

The three longer such streak: Randy Johnson did it in all of his 35 starts for Arizona in 1999; Bob Gibson did it in all 34 starts for St. Louis in 1970; and Curt Schilling did it in 33 starts with Arizona in 2002.

richbrave

10:57 pm

Looks like L.A. and St. LOUIS are playing like they’re already division champs. On that basis, we’ve got to run the table while the ROX can lose one each to those two teams. BREWERS might be our salvation. Maybe they will come to play. I’m sure the fish will in ATLANTA. Keep winning guys.

RHR: Dodgers and Cardinals and Phillies are all going to be playing to win, because these games down stretch are going to decide home-field advantage, etc. Teams aren’t going to give those games away to rest players. Not as long as home-field advantage is at stake.

Saw that last out in Colorado, it must be nice to hit what would probably be a shallow flyout in most ballparks and see it carry further in that air. They have a great homefield advantage and they use it. They know the ball carries there and when all you need is a sac fly doesn’t take much to get that runner in.

Javy pitched a great game. Offense got just enough runs with some help from the Nats to get him the win. Just keep winning boys. Put the pressure on the Rockies. I have a feeling Mr. Holliday will remember how to hit at Coors. No more big DP’s hit into by him. Put the ball in the air. It will travel.

Early game tomorrow. I’m a little disappointed FOX is choosing to show Yankees-Red Sox tomorrow here in the metro-Atlanta area over the San-Fran game. National league city, why not show a national league game. I guess they think we want to see the 100th meeting between the Yanks and the Red Sox this season. Not like these games ever get picked up by other national broadcast through the season like the one thats on TBS tonight and the one on ESPN Sunday.
