Well, if it was up to me, the TV would be locked on the Braves…but there’s gonna be some serious channel-changing happening tomorrow. At least ssoR will (most likely) be catching! ;)

okay, writer, I got a quick question. for the teams that face the rockies like cardinals, would they try to lose on purpose so rockies will make playoffs?
because rockies lineup are kind of scary, but they rather face that than the unbelievable braves starting pitchers. so I’m just wondering if other teams will help the rockies out so they don’t have to face the braves….

BRAVES still in the running with NINE to go. Excellent pitching, terrible defense for the NATS. Masterful pitching by JAVIER VASQUEZ. My first look at JAVY this year. Man what a game. And that takes nothing away from JOHN LANNAN who I have seen on numerous occasions both this year and last. The kids gonna’ be a good one, but he was no match for VASQUEZ tonight. 104 pitch complete game, three hits, one earned, seven SO’s, one BB. And no rain. Cleared this fore-noon and stayed that way. We may dodge a bullitt weather-wise.

Just heard the Nats broadcaster say that Javi was 10-2 on the road BEFORE tonight. So I guess pitching well only on pitchers parks is not the reason for his success. We will be crazy to trade this guy!! He wants to stay with us, probably for even 8-9 million a year. An willing to sign tomorrow if asked. At a 1 million difference, will you take Kawanami or Javy???

Still, I will trade Lowe eating 4 million of his salary. (you will be saving 3 million with Javi’s new contract if he agrees, and can ask Hudson to take a 1 million cut, which he may do).

What a solid performance from Vazquez. Masterful again. If Cox had yanked him I was going to go through the TV set. That last pitch he threw to Zimmerman was the best of the night.

Guess that just about answers any question of the big game pitcher nature from the last blog. No way in hell Vazquez is traded after the season. Absolutely no way.

Oh yeah, as for Prado, I think 2nd base is pretty well-manned don’t you for 2010? Nuff said…….

Nice win, although the Nats are downright pitiful. Please note that the offensive heroes, as has been the case so often this second half were Diaz and Prado. Two guys the HOF manager benched the first half of the year. Two guys he didn’t want to play. Two guys he felt were inferior to Kelly Johnson, Casey Kotchman, Jordan Schafer and Jeff Francoeur.

Imagine where the Braves would be in the standings, and what Prado and Diaz’s full-year stats could have been.

From what I have read at various places on the net. Its being rumored that the Braves have no interest in trading Vasquez and also read that the Braves have begun speaking with huddy about a possible extension to avoid his option.

If the Braves can find a way to keep Javy and Huddy, then combined with Hanson and JJ, and either Lowe or KK (most probably Lowe) we will have one of the best overall rotations in baseball. If we could resign Laroche to an extension, make sure we get (or keep) a closer to go along with new set-up man Moylan, and manage to either get a bat for LF or RF (maybe Heyward’s ready?) and stack that onto the positive progress we made the second half of the year (playoffs or not), we are going to be a good team next year.

It is possible for the Braves to get into the playoffs. For anyone who remembers Joe Torre’s first season here in the early 80’s, the Braves
trailed the Dodgers by 3 1/2 games with 10 to go, and I remember Phil Niekro’s quote in the AJC “See you in the playoffs at that time. Sure enough, the Braves rallied down the stretch to win the NL West division on the final day of the regular season without the need of a one-game playoff.

Paul Lentz

September 25th, 2009
10:06 pm

I was given a lot of crap yesterday for suggesting that I’d be disappointed if the Braves didnt sweep all 7 remaining games against the Nationals.

In 1993, the Braves won 104 games to finish 1 game ahead of the Giants. Against the Rockies, the Braves were 13-0. If we were “satisfied” with a 12-1 record against the Rockies, we’d had been forced to play the Giants in a 1 game play-off.

I do not feel that it is unreasonable at all to expect this Braves team to sweep all 7 games against the Nationals. The 1993 Rockies were a better team than the 2009 Nationals. While the 2009 Braves arent quite as good as the 1993 Braves…….our starting pitching this year is 5 deep.

If we are indeed play-off worthy, then it is imperative that we put pressure on the Rockies by winning our games before they play.

We are 1 game ahead of both the Giants and Marlins in the loss column. If we keep winning, the only thing that matters is how the Rockies do. The Marlins and Giants are irrelevant (particularly given the fact that we play the Fish next week for 3 games).
