Jo Jo Reyes, I have not given up on you at all. I would love to see you get in shape this offseason and come to ST to win a bullpen job. He does quite well against LH.
While I hope it doesn’t happen, it will not surprise me in the least if the Braves fall completely on their faces against these poor teams and fall out of playoff contention.. I hope it doesn’t happen, but it probably will knowing this team..
Why in the hell is LaRoche batting 8th? The guy has been our best hitter since he came back and he is hitting in front of the pitcher, why? Does Bobby Cox think that LaRoche will give Javy Vazquez better pitches to hit? (sarcasm off)
Seriously, this old timer can’t do a f’n thing right these days and all he does is get a 1 year extension to manage, and a 5 year advisory role after that.. While most Americans are losing their jobs whether they are performing good or bad, Cox keeps his and get rewarded rather well for doing nothing but pissing away games against teams we should be beating.. Serious question here DOB, does Bobby Cox hate his wife or something? The guy will be almost 70 when he walks away from active managing, then about 75 when he is finished with his advisory role. Providing he lives that long, he will not spend any decent time with his wife. I wish he would have walked away after this season. I don’t know what I hate more, the fact that he didn’t leave, or that the Braves didn’t force his hand, His better days are well behind him, and all the Braves did by extending him for next season is guarantee to Braves fans that we will not be in the playoffs next year either. Thanks Wren and Scheurholtz, way to treat the fans that pay your damn salaries.
‘Not true. I swear I saw him ground to second the other night.’
Hahaha. You’re right. I was actually at that game (Citi Field) he came in at the 3 spot. I hadnt noticed that Chipper got double switched out bc of his back, and Infante was in at 3rd. When they announced Norton was hitting, I thought BC had pitch hit Norton for Chipper and I almost lost my mind. Then he actually hit the ball to 2nd. Better than I had expected.
Bay Area Steve: Sorry so late getting back to you on that. I double checked the final scores on those games and so far it looks to be 129-0 with a three run or more differential in games he started. In games he started where he left with a lead of 3 runs or more he was 118-0.
I understand some of the points made about why Adam is batting 8th, but just read Dave’s blog and look at those stats. If we’re gonna run the gauntlet on this thing; we got shake it up a little. I just don’t agree with it!
BravesfaninWisc: Cox will be home a helluva lot more as an advisor than he is now. It’s not like he’ll be a scout, on the road all the time. Not at all. And with all the Braves’ minor league teams close by, he’ll get to spend most nights at home. He’s going to be going over to Rome (which is 10 minutes or so from his farm in Adairsville) and to Gwinnett (he’s got a place in Marietta), and over to Mississippi sometimes, or Myrtle. But he’s not going on the road for weeks at a time like now, or like scouts do.
MVH: I think it’s more a combination of things — Church’s back has been problematic for some time, and Diaz has just been so freakin’ hot. Not nearly as hot against righties as lefties, but even against righties, Diaz is hitting .261 with six homers and a .353 OBP in 218 at-bats, compared to Church .250 with one homer and a .324 OBP in 92 at-bats against righties since he came to the Braves.
And lately, Diaz has been hitting everybody, righties and lefties.
If Brandon’s link was the star wars thing with Heap and Bobby, it came from umpbump.com, someone there did it and I saw it linked on talking chop earlier today. Funny.
Turner Field is a wonderful place to spend an evening, so long as it has absolutely nothing to do with baseball. From the moment you enter the stadium, you are bombarded with noises, flashes of color, and stupid shit that makes it virtually impossible to pay attention to the action on the field. Not only does it continue when the inning begins, it keeps going during at bats. Every foul ball that’s hit into the stands is greeted by some inane sound effect from the Turner library or elsewhere. The Jetsons theme. Chewbacca. The gulls from “Finding Nemo.” Even if it’s a hard liner that whacks some unsuspecting old woman in the skull, rest assured you’ll hear a giant slide whistle at the moment of contact. It’s like a giant episode of Benny Hill, in slow (regular?) motion.
Then there’s all the visual shit that distracts you from the game. The enormous, seizure machine known as BravesVision, which is conveniently placed on top of the batters eye to ensure that the entire Braves offense has to play every game looking into the face of a god damn hydrogen bomb. Then there’s the Nazi Cow on the roof, which is the single most embarrassing thing in the city of Atlanta not currently airing Thursdays on Bravo. And then, of course, there’s the fans. You will be hard pressed to find a group of 25,000 as disinterested in the event they have congregated for than at an Atlanta Braves game. The lone exception is when the Mets, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, or Yankees are in town, where Braves fans are always outnumbered. Plus you still see a number of people wearing Jeff Francoeur T-shirts, which as a Braves fan pissed the shit out of me even before he was traded. (Torgo’s Executive Powder)
And Shamus? I mean, other than me, and I’m not a Ben nor do I live 7 miles away, I can’t think of anyone would could have done a better job with this:
Went to a game this summer at Turner Field, Braves-Brewers, Tommy Hanson’s first start. My entire reason for driving 7 hours was to boo Jeff Francoeur, this double play hitting into, high fastball swinging at waste of a roster spot has been the bane of my existence for the past 2 years. First at bat he comes up to the plate, these people are CHEERING the man with the .240 and .250 obp. He proceeds to hit into 2 double plays, go 0-4 with a strikeout and THEY ARE STILL CHEERING. Not to mention the heat, dear god the sweaty balls that day. (Ben G.)
And Aubrey N, I can’t copy your comments because well, yeah…but props to you, son.
Good lord. Tyler Stovall finished the 2009 season with a 57-to-56 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 52 innings, but he allowed 6.2 H/9 and finished with a 3.12 ERA. What a strange season.

They’re all fair, and true. Except for the one about the tool race being new this year. Thats … 5 years old by now, at least. Anyway. Funny stuff. Don’t read it McFann. Adult content and stuff.
Torgo’s Executive Powder overstates it a bit. Kind of arrogant and Ivory-tower, too. But mostly right. Though I really don’t mind all the cheesy sound effects or the annoying games with Mark Owings or the seemingly disinterested fans. It’s entertainment, not religion. If people want to get watch the game closely, they can. And they’re able to, as I frequently do when I go with my friends, all of whom are generally more interested in getting smashed than the game that is going on in front of them. But I have no problem paying attention to the game. And I realize that not everyone in the park is going to be as interested in the game as I am, that’s just reality. So I don’t care how much attention the rest of the fans are–or seem to be–devoting to the game. It’s just not my business and it would be a stupid thing to get angry about. Completely beyond your own control. If it really bothers you that much, well, I don’t know what to say.
glad you saw my note. I still don’t believe that, but what do I know…
Would you mind explaining how you compiled that, which site you are using? I spent about an hour, and couldn’t find anything. I’d look to look up some comparables, as you did.
And, again, I’m not sayin’ you are wrong, but I’d bet a US Grant that Smoltz lost at least one game where he had a three run lead. Heck, I’d bet it’s closer to five than zero.
RHR- this is the first year that there’s actually been people in costumes for the Tool Race, before it was just a video. But everything else was pretty spot on, unfortunately
Dave, while they still have a “chance”, I see it as unlikely.
Say, for arguments sake, that the Braves sweep all of their seven remaining games from the Nats. (Not a guarantee) and win only one of three from Florida. The Rockies, with nine games left, would have to go four and five for us to catch them, not counting the other teams in the mix.
I’m not saying it can;t be done. I’m just saying, I dont think it will be. I’m the ultimate Braves fan, and I always root for them to win, but, if I had to guess, my gut tells me they will come up a game or two short.
Guys, there are a lot of Bobby haters amongst us but if Braves pull this miracle and make playoffs he will end up with the manager of the year award. People will simply forget all those managerial mistakes and start praising how great he is. I hate that when it happens ! If it was not for Bobby we wouldn’t have stuck with Schafer, Francouer, Norton for that long, We could have easily won 10games more and would be sitting pretty top of the division. Whatever it is, I hope Bobby doesn’t make any more silly moves and we make it to playoffs.., Go Braves !!!
Smoltz lost at least one game where he had a three run lead
This is where it gets dirty. I don’t have leads blown in the game. Only the runs scored in that game at the end, and when he exited said game. If he had a three run lead in the 2nd, and blew it in the third, I wouldn’t know. That’d be inning by inning analysis which is considerably more time…
But again, the states are also his personal record, not the team record… he could have left with the lead and the team lost it there after…
Any who, if you are interested, email me and I’ll send it over.
Yeah, I suspected it would need inning-by-inning, as nobody seems to keep the stat. But, I’ve seen it over the years on tv, going back to his Oakland days. Seen it at least five times. And Huddy’s got it on his foundation’s site. So somebody’s keeping it. Probably Elias, and we’d have to pay to get it.
Maybe DOB could find out; it’s not like he’s busy.
Check out this Javier Vazquez note I got from Stats Inc.:
“Javier Vazquez, Atlanta’s starter in Washington tonight, is 14-9 with 20 quality starts and a 2.91 ERA that would be a career low. The 33-year-old right-hander, who is having far and away the most consistent season of his career, has struck out at least five batters in each of his 30 starts in 2009. Since 1954, only three pitchers have recorded five or more strikeouts in more consecutive starts from the start of a season. They are Randy Johnson, who fanned at least five in all of his 35 starts for the 1999 Diamondbacks; longtime Cardinals ace Bob Gibson in all 34 of his 1970 starts; and Curt Schilling with 33 straight for Arizona in 2002.”
Stats Inc. also sent out this one (presumably for McFann):
“Atlanta catcher Brian McCann has consistently delivered with runners in scoring position since the All-Star break. Among players with at least 50 plate appearances with RISP in the second half, McCann is the top major league leader with a .444 average and .889 slugging percentage. He is 24-for-54 in those situations, with six doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs. Only Matt Holliday has more RBIs, with 45 for Oakland and St. Louis.”
Soemtimes those MLB prediction magazines are spot on. I rememeber reading their predictions on Javy for ‘09 and most wrote how he would have a breakout season with Atlanta and Bobby Cox.
Those stats are why you don’t trade Vasquez in the offseason, particularly since he has stated publicly that he wants to come back next year. You can never have enough pitching, particularly starting pitching. By the way, do you think both Soriano and Gonzalez are gone next year? That would make a strong point a definite weakness, don’t you think?
Still seems weird to look at the game notes, with the matchup across the top, and see (52-100) after the Washington Nationals.
Just such an awful record.
I covered the 1997 Marlins that won the World Series, then the 1998 blown-up Marlins who went 54-108. Yes, a 108-loss season. Mike Lowell, Derrek Lee, Cliff Floyd, Ryan Dempster, Kevin Millar, Luis Castillo and Mark Kotsay were among the many future standouts on that team, which also had World Series heroes Edgar Renteria, Livan Hernandez and Craig Counsell, and for about six weeks, until they were all traded to the Dodgers in mid-May, Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla and Charles Johnson. That trio was traded to L.A. along with Jim Eisenreich for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—Fireman Ed has something new to cheer about.
The Jets’ most famous fan received a game ball from coach Rex Ryan during the team meeting Friday for helping lead a raucous Meadowlands crowd during New York’s 16-9 win over New England last Sunday.
Ed Anzalone, a New York City firefighter, has been coming to every Jets home game for years, wearing a fire helmet and leading the “J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets! Jets!” cheer.
Ryan sent a voicemail message to season ticket holders last week, urging the fans to make things “miserable” for Tom Brady(notes) and the Patriots. The fans answered that call, and after the victory, Ryan said they were the difference in the team beating New England at the Meadowlands for the first time since 2000.
Speculates on LaRussa and Duncan leaving St Louis For San Fran. WBC
Duncan might be the best pitching coach in the game. the trick would be weaning him off of LaRussa.maybe they can hold out another season and come as a package in 2011?

So I don’t care how much attention the rest of the fans are–or seem to be–devoting to the game. It’s just not my business and it would be a stupid thing to get angry about. Completely beyond your own control. If it really bothers you that much, well, I don’t know what to say.

10 Paul,
glad you saw my note.

RHR,
awesome. And, I think you might be right about Braveheart authoring that section. He posted something here that was very similar.
10 Paul, don’t have your address. Send it to sospoker@hotmail.com, if ya would.

Louis.”

DOB,
Those stats are why you don’t trade Vasquez in the offseason, particularly since he has stated publicly that he wants to come back next year.

Weird times.

How come Atlanta never has anyone like this?

Duncan might be the best pitching coach in the game. the trick would be weaning him off of LaRussa.maybe they can hold out another season and come as a package in 2011?
