Mauer is the MVP, hands-down. Leads the AL in BA, OBP and SLG. Not the traditional triple crown, but it’ll do, don’t ya think?

TnBrian (September 20th, 2009 2:29 pm): “It’s amazing that a 23 year old has the intellegence [sic] to crowd Howard with pitches, but our vets have too much pride to do that or don’t realize it.”

Yeh, yeh, yeh — try sellin’ that siht to Boone Logan. (Or can you not remember even two games ago?)

And through his first eleven games against the Braves this year (43 ABs), Howard hit .232/.244/.419/.663, with one HR, four RBIs and EIGHT strike-outs.

It wasn’t Tommy Hanson getting him out each and every one of those 34 times that he didn’t reach base. I think some of the Braves’ “vets” may have been involved.

No. But I do think he is a beast…
The Twins rapidly became my favorite AL team last year, that game against the White Sox reminded me of the Glavine WS game when Justice hit the HR…

Steve from OH,

I think the MVP thing is very stupid….
For instance, if the Braves make the playoffs, Martin Prado should be the NL MVP.
But it will go to Pujols, even though the Cardinals would have won without him…

Pujols should get the Hank Aaron award, but not the MVP. However, the Twins would be no where without Mauer, thus, MVP…

Do you agree (with me and a few others) that the league MVP should be the player who was most valuable to his team regardless of how the team itself finishes?

If so, lemme know what you think of this reasoning:

The value of a player to a team is simply how much he contributed to the team’s wins, since wins are the only thing a team qua team values.

So it doesn’t matter in the least how well a player performs in his team’s losses, just how he performs in the team’s wins.

In which case, you should evaluate every player’s stats for only the games which their team won. Whatever your preferred stats may be (AVG, RBIs, VORP, OPS+, etc, etc) — evaluate players’ performances with your stat of choice for only those games their teams won.

The result would be a better start to selecting a leauge MVP than anything we’ve ever seen yet, imho.

Whaddaya think?

Random,

I wouldn’t say it’s “regardless of how the team” places. In baseball, the goal is to win the World Series, or at least, make the playoffs. If your team doesn’t make the playoffs, well, then your performance, your stats aren’t “valuable”. I realize that is really black and white. I do believe that the MVP award should go to the player thats most valuable (Duh, I know, but it hasn’t been that way in the past…). If you take away his production, does the team still have a shot?

If you take away Martin Prado’s performance, the Braves would be under .500.
If you take away Albert Pujols’s performance, the Cardinals are still a lock for the title…

I think the MVP should be determined by WARP, something along those lines…

Then again, I don’t think that’s enough criteria, because a win to one team is not the same as a win to another team. Having a player that nets the Braves 3 more wins is much more valuable than the same player playing for the Nationals, because what’s more valuable, a 65 win season or a 62 win season? The 65 win season, of course, but not by much. On the other hand, the difference between an 88 win season and a 91 win season is huge. A 91 win season is much more valuable than an 88 win season.

Yeah, well, I reject that approach (even though it seems to me now that it could be considered an extension of my own approach. Hmmmmm — I’ll have to think some more on that). Imo (for now), the league MVP does not necessarily have to come from one of the four play-off teams (or even from a team that barely missed the play-offs).
