Too bad about Chipper being in the starting lineup…and Lowe not skipping his turn Monday!.

Bobby and I are going to have a serious talk after the game. I told Chipper he would have to sit until the current winning streak is over or until the regular season ends…whichever came first!

Now look what Bobby has done. Inferior third base defense tonight along with the ‘current’…weakest bat we have…in the 3 hole…again.

Bobby…you have some serious explaining to do, my friend, if this all backfires!!!

The real question is, if the Braves play themselves back into this thing will the pressure cause them to fold like a wet sandwich? The Braves claim they are playing this good because the pressure is off. Guess what? Teams that play well under pressure end up winning. Hope their mental makeup has changed. And right when the team has forgotten Chipper he is back in the lineup. Guess Chipper for the good of the team couldn’t stay out a few more games.

DOB: In answer to the blog question, I believe the Braves can at least win the wild card. I’ve been a Braves fan since they came to Atlanta, and I have never stopped believing.

While I’d rather see them win than lose, of course, I just love to watch the game.

I want you to know how much I have enjoyed you and Carroll writing the almost daily blogs and articles. Watching baseball and reading the articles on the computer is one thing I can do. I check the AJC site all during the night and day. THANKS.

Despite all the folks on the blog who have a different opinion, I think Bobby Cox has been a great manager and I’ll be sad to see him retire. I appreciate what he has done this year to keep his players in the chase this long.

I also appreciate Chipper putting himself back in the lineup. He can be a difference maker. While he has been having his problems recently, I think the Braves need him during this push. Not saying the Braves can’t get it done without him, just that there’s always the chance he gets hot.

It’s good to see spirited, relevant talk about a possible Braves playoff run this late in the year again. I remember thinking, probably only two-thirds of the way through their incredible run of divisional dominance, when they seemed to be getting eliminated earlier and earlier in the playoffs each post-season, that maybe in the long run it would be good for the team and its fans to go through a few years of lean times. Not because I was a fair-weather fan, but because I saw an uber-talented ballclub with a model, professional atmosphere who breezed through each regular season, only to be out-hustled and beaten by on-paper lesser teams who simply came out in that series with more passion and fire. I think the fans here sensed that too, so I’m careful before passing judgment on our diminishing crowds then or now.

Well, we’ve had those few years of lean times now, and let’s face it, it hasn’t been fun. Going to the ballpark isn’t quite as nice when the main attractions for fans are visiting superstars who are outshining anybody on your current hometown squad (just ask the Hawks whenever the Lakers, Cavs, or a half-dozen other teams come to town). We got used to excellence and came to take it for granted during the Braves’ big run, and yet we began to criticize them when we saw that window begin to close. Easy to do, I guess; it’s human nature. Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux, Lopez, McGriff, Galarraga, all the rest…they’re all gone now, and while we may only have a single World Championship banner hanging at Turner Field, I would happily state the case for the Braves’ induction into Cooperstown, if there were a place for excellence over a given period by a team as well as individual players. But reality folks, as Bobby Cox once said in an interview, is that playoff baseball more than any other pro sport is a crapshoot; definitely moreso than in the NFL (the 2008 Arizona Cardinals are an aberration, an example of a team that got hot and had a WHOLE LOT go wrong for the other teams facing them last year) and certainly in the NBA, where the more physically talented team almost always wins. Baseball has a 162-game schedule, far more than any other sport, but is a game of inches, of miracles and heartbreaks, and often seemingly random chance which defy the odds; they can come down to a single at-bat (I give you Francisco Cabrera) or mistake (Bill Buckner, anyone?).

So let’s appreciate the success we had with the understanding that the page is about to turn once again. Soon Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones, the last two links to those storied teams, will likely no longer be in the dugout at the Ted. It’s called change; it happens, and is inevitable. But for now, we still have THIS year, and it is still relevant. The math says the Braves have little hope of maintaining their current run of wins and sneaking into the playoffs, but who knows? Maybe this is OUR year to get in by the skin of our teeth, catch a couple of better-on-paper teams napping, and bring home a World Series trophy none of us ever saw coming.

Stranger things have happened, so dust off those tomahawks and let’s party like it’s 1991!

jeffrey d – I think we have had an interesting divergence of opinions today between people making fun of Chipper because he’s a wimp who won’t play when he has the tiniest ailment, and those who hate him for pretending that he’s well enough to play tonight

(to those in the second camp – I am ambivalent on whether he plays tonight – I’ll let you know my official opinion after the game – much easier that way to decide, after I see how he’s done)

One might nominate Javy Vazquez for that under-the-radar award in the NL. Only 167 hits allowed to go with a 216-40 strikeout-walk ratio in 197 1/3 innings? Ridiculous. ESPN Stats & Information has Vazquez second to Verlander with 393 swings and misses for the season. If the Braves, as suggested, have to move his contract this winter, he will be one of the most sought-after free agents
