I remember when Laroche was with the Braves before, they lost every time he hit a homerun. Is that still the case? Did the Pirates ever win when he hit a GS?
TnBrian: Pedro’s just the latest pitcher the Braves have hit hard in the middle of a streak, and his streak’s nowhere near the length of those of Carpenter, Pineiro, Cliff Lee …
Hey, they hit good pitchers better than most teams do, or they have for much of this season.
And no, Pedro’s success has had little if anything to do with run support. He was 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA and .218 opp average in his past three starts before this, and the Phillies scored 2, 4 and 1 runs while he was in those three games.
ok lets see if a javy can “help his own cause” to repeat the worst idea in baseball…I mean isn’t the “cause” of all players not just pitchers to win the game
The TV graphic indicated that the Braves were the only NL yet to hit a grand slam this year. It’d be nice if DOB did some research to find out how rare this really is. I don’t know if the Braves have been slamless any time in the recent past.
yes diaz should be a everyday player next year in lf
I disagree. We should try to get a big bat for LF and Diaz should be plan B there. If the FO wants to keep Heyward down until June, Diaz is a good choice for RF though. I’d hope that we can keep both he and Church and run a platoon out there, because I’m not sure I would want to take a chance on Diaz’s ability to hit RHP…
Glad the Braves aren’t in a dead heat in the standings shooting for a playoff slot. If they were, I would be livid! My local cable company who puts the Peachtree games on the CSS channel is showing college football instead of the Braves. Ole’ Miss playing some nose picker school.
Should Diaz be given a full time spot for next season? – Rob
He should platoon in left as originally planned for this year. The big bat signing will play right and have a gun of an arm (Diaz has a weak arm throwing home).

Heyward is the right fielder. The big bat will play LF.
I like Matt Diaz a lot but I don’t want him to be an everyday starter next year. He is very valuable as a possible platoon guy and very much so off the bench against a lefty, but his defense sometimes just isn’t there and sometimes either is the bat against righties. This team needs a power bat for LF next year (and to keep Adam for 1st base).
Yeah, that .739 OPS against RHP is a bit concerning for a corner OF. I wouldn’t mind it if he was playing everyday until Heyward came up, but I don’t know about 600 PA. It’s a big risk to take.
But he should play against every LHP we face. Without a doubt.
oh, and Jurrjens4NLCY: We’ve said before, the blogulace is not necessarily a representative sample when it comes to things like Bobby Cox’s popularity. kirkinga – I happen to love Yunel. He was at the Verizon store in Gainesville today. If I hadn’t been in an all-day seminar, I would have gone to see him. He was there with Javy Lopez.
Not surprising (on Escobar staying down a while). Guy needs to grow up a bit. I still say he should be dealt, but I know the prevailing wisdom on the blog says to continue to put up with his antics and hope that he grows out of it. (27 years old, I might remind you!)

I predict we finish two games out of making the playoffs. The two games that I blame for missing out is the Phillies meltdown start of season and the Gonzo blown save in Washington after we just swept Philadelphia. That game still makes me sick to think about.

Woops! Guess what? He is an every day player!
Of all the things I hear on this blog, this steams me the most! I hear it on TV, I hear it from the writers and I hear it from the fans. I remember that Kevin Youkilus wasn’t an every day player until he forced the Red Sox to put him in there every day. Prado did the same thing in ATL.
The Braves using that train of thought has been especially hurtful to the franchise the last couple of years. Frenchy and KJ neither had to fight for a job because they were backed up by players that the franchise didn’t think were every day players. How did that work out, huh?

Don’t die of shock but I am going to say something positive about Chipper Jones. His arm looks a lot stronger these past few days. He was throwing a lot of lobs over there the past few months
You do not call Jason Heyward up to be put into a platoon.– Rob from SC
Rob, that’s not what Steve said. Read what he said.
However, it’s also not entirely far-fetched that Heyward could spend some time in some sort of platoon as a rookie. Keep in mind, Andruw Jones played some in a platoon in his rookie season in 1997. And Andruw had even better stats and as much or more acclaim in the minors as Heyward.
Oh, and that was after Andruw hit two homers in the 1996 World Series at age 19.
Of course some people have had a problem with Yunel since he came up. and pushed hard for him to be traded this offseason. Something about not speaking English doesn’t sit well with some even in 2009.
Of course if you care about winning you want Yunel on your team. If you have another agenda then you most likely don’t care about his productivity.
