Haven’t had a chance to talk to Escobar yet; he was in training room when clubhouse was open. But going back down in a few minutes when they re-open to see if he wants to say anything.

WEATHER: Surprisingly (considering it’s flooding around Atlanta), it’s not raining here and they’re getting field ready for an on-time start. But forecast says good chance of rain tonight, so obviously things could change in a hurry.

Bobby noncommital on Lowe, said they hope he’ll be ready, but they’re “trying” to hold back Kawakami and not use him in relief, in case they need to start him in place of the blistered-fingered Lowe on Monday at NY.

Random… Clarification. Rotation pre-Hudson. Kawakami was the weakest link. I can’t imagine Cox replacing any of the other starters to give Hudson an opportunity, for whatever the reasons.

As to Kawakami’s adjusting, yes, he has progressed. But I don’t think he’s going to be the pitcher that he was billed to be. And though the jury is still out on Hudson, I’d take a chance with him over keeping Kawakami, budget considerations aside.

DOB – I posted this at about 1:00 and was hoping to get your opinion. —- With Chipper’s struggles the last half, what do you think of the idea of him hitting from only the right side. Work on his swing from the right this winter and bat only from the right next year. Has to be easier to figure out one swing instead of two. He has been one of the best switch hitters in history, but maybe with his age, it is time to simplify. We do need a good stick from the right.

Let’s see, Giants getting torched, D-backs somehow getting a W tonite and 3 back in loss column with a Win. How bout a rain shortened, 6 inning Javy masterpiece and we win 1-0 and save the bullpen for another night. Say what you will about this team, they have been resilient this year. This team has been Luca Brazi a handful of times and has come back. I would not be surprised to see a good effort tonite.

Steve, I appreciate your thoughts in regards to Lowe.

One thing I found interesting, is that a couple of days ago, when defending his contract (including the fact that he makes $15 million each of the next 3 years), you noted that his slider had hurt him this year, but you (as a glass half-full type) felt like this was correctable (or you hoped it was, etc.)
But today, when mentioning Lowe’s lack of tradeability, you cite his deteriorating slider, and a recognition that his may not be correctable.
Something tells me, that you, in your heart of hearts, feel like Lowe is going to be overpaid in years 2-4, but you just can’t defend years 2-4 yet, becuase they haven’t happened.

Separately, while I don’t really think the Braves are going to be able to trade Lowe (if they even want to), one thing to consider is that there may be some team out there that Lowe did not desire to sign with, who may actually consider tying to acquire him in trade. I don’t know who that team is, if they even exist, but it is a possible reality.
Plus, Lowe’s contract is no longer 4/60, it’s now down to 3/45, and while that isn’t a steal, it is more practical.
Plus, if it really were a salary-dump type situation for an Atlanta, the Braves may not try and acquire that much in return.

Do I really think this will happen? No, I don’t. I’m just throwing out the possibility that there may be some other team in need of pitching, that would be willing to acquire Lowe for 3/$45 that was not in position to sign him over the winter.

Everytime I watch a Braves game, I think about how the blog will handle it: case in point, Esco being pulled. I get why Bobby did it & if it weren’t so crucial that we win at this point, I would’ve agreed with him, HOWEVER, he pulled someone that was too valuable to lose! He cut off the team’s nose to spite their face! I knew as soon as the commentators had been saying how much better Esco had been doing, boom, he’d go & do something stupid. He is very immature, no doubt about it. But he is also extremely talented & we need him in there! 2nd case in point, as soon as I saw Medlen come in, I said oh boy, we’re done. No offense to the kid but he’s a disaster every time it counts. We’ve used our excellent trio of Moylan, Gonzo & MFIKY to death (you can debate whether their workload is Bobby’s fault or not, I can’t decide but fact remains they are tired & he had to rest them). I think I would’ve rather seen Buddy Carlyle than Medlen! Results might’ve been the same or worse but I can’t stomach the sight of Medlen at this point! I get nervous as soon as I see him warming, up, Yikes! If we didn’t pitch to Howard, Werth would probably make us pay, but let’s try it & see, shall we?? We also need Nate to get on base, 5 times up & not even a walk! Come on, Nate-man, we need some spark at the top of the lineup. Caveman can’t hit in every position!!! And Mitchell, if you hate Diaz, something is seriously wrong with you. I have an innate prejudice against guys who say they are big-time Christians but I love the way Diaz plays the game of baseball, he’s so intense & plays his heart out all the time. Those are the kind of guys I root for. Chipper, Loaf are old & not expected to bust it down the line. Now, lets move on & beat these suckers!!!!!!!!!!

Too late to start hitting 97 mph fastballs left-handed against lefties, or right-handed against righties.

Wren busted his hump to get Kawakami as a part of a grander scheme, one of which Kawakami is only a part. An indispensable part, indeed, and just the first stroke of his master plan.

And I agree with you under 99% of circumstances–except that the ultimate goal in his master plan is a World Series, and if Wren feels that is within reach (which I think it could be with a few upgrades), then you and I both know anything that can happen to facilitate that will happen.

But today, when mentioning Lowe’s lack of tradeability, you cite his deteriorating slider, and a recognition that his may not be correctable.

I’d thought I’d said “may or may not” both times…like I said, I’m not a scout, so I don’t know, and I’m trying to see it from both perspectives. Even if it is correctable, obviously an interested team can’t be thrilled that the problem is there (am I saying this clearly? Poor wording on my part…)

Oh, and on the DIPS, Random:

The way I’ve interpreted it is that the “DIPS” measures only what the pitcher can control, so obviously strikeouts, walks and homeruns are in it, but so are batted ball types–because there aren’t any outside factors that effect the batted ball type. The outcome of that batted ball type dissociates us from DIPS and now we’re measuring ERA, WHIP, BABIP, BAA, etc. It’s still DIPS because we don’t care what happened to hit after it got hit, because we know the pitcher can’t have a signifcant deal of control over that.

What lies, little p!ss-ant?

I said that Jones routinely goes 1st to 3rd or scores from 2nd on a single, and routinely scores from 1st on a double. That is a truth, not a lie.

I also said (earlier, with no specific reference to Jones) that whether or not a batter should bust it down the line depends on the game situation.

I subsequently said that Jones, Laroche, Anderson, McCann — all of them would have been busting it down the line in the same game/situation that Escobar failed to last night.

So show me the lies, little pismire.

By the way, for those who’ve asked about Liberty and when they might sell the team: I talked to Terry McGuirk (Braves CEO) today, who told me Liberty committed to MLB at time of purchase to keep the team at least through the current collective bargaining agreement, which runs through the 2011 season. And I got the impression talking to him that Liberty would probably keep it longer than that. Asset appreciation is what they seek, and they haven’t gotten it yet, due to economy and other factors, including not playing in postseason, etc.

And they’re not cutting payroll. Probably won’t raise it too much from one year to next, but they’re not cutting.
