Perhaps this has been pointed out. Perhaps it has not. The Braves are 5 out of the wild card race with 14 games to play. In 2007, on this same calendar date, the Rockies were 4.5 games out, with 13 games to play.
The main difference? The Rockies had 11 head-to-head meetings with 2 of the 3 teams that they were chasing. The Dodgers and the Padres. The 3rd team, you ask? That would have been the NY Mets who on that same date (9-16-07), held a 3.5 game on the Phillies.
So, the Rox were trailing 3 teams. One (the Mets) were in the middle of their own dogfight with the Phillies and they choked. The other two teams ahead of them, had to play 11 games against them, and the Rockies pretty much kicked their asses. Rockies finished 13-1, winning ALL 11 GAMES in their head to head matches with SD and LA. The Dodgers finished 7.5 games behind the Rockies in the WC standings after being 2 games up on them, on September the 16th. The Dodgers finished that year on a 3-10 stretch.
Yikes.
So, mathematically, the Braves are still in it. Realistically, and practically?
Not so much.
THAT being said. All the Braves can do is win. And a win like tonight, is the kind of lucky BS that the Rockies pulled off every night in September of 2007. If they keep winning, anything can happen.
This can’t be happening, right? Like Skip Caray used to say, “win, win, win…..”
