If the Braves get this one in tonight…Lowe needs to pick himself up and burn up some innings…hopefully more effective than usual. Out of 30 starts…The $15 million dollar man has only pitched 8 innings…twice! Yikes. Lotta money for 177 innings…averaging just under 6 innings per start. Mr. Lowe…needs to step it up these last few starts. 14 wins is nice…but he gets a helluva lot more run support than J.J. and Javy ever see! Lowe gets 5.12 runs per start…and with that much run support…Lowe could be going for win number 20 tonight…instead of win number 15…
Just some thoughts…and yes I was a officially ruled a bust…yet my career ERA is about the same as Lowe’s this year…4.61 mine to 4.47 for old Derek…and I never made 1/4 the money he made this year as I did in 8 seasons…
I word on that 98 WS team.I’d been farting around reviewing some of those 90s teams.Looking at season stats for starting pitching. I came to wonder if there had ever been a better group than that one.
I did some Google searching and found several experts who listed them as the #1 group in history. The same site had 3 of those 90s teams in the top 10…ALL TIME. I’m left wobdering how any team could have swept them.
Another thing,The often repeated idea that Mad Dog and Glavine under performed in post season during that period. In 98 they shared the record for most consecutive post season starts of pitching at least 7 innings, while giving up 2 or fewer…how did they not win more titles ?
Tried calling Cox, absolutely NO help whatsoever with their automated deal. Guess I have to watch the Red Sox. Can’t find a radio feed either for some reason.

However, given the fact that Francoeur has played better with the Mets, I just dont see them low-balling Francoeur. However, unless the Mets non-tender Francoeur, he will get awarded at least $7-8 mil in arbitration. Just watch.
I just dont understand what McCann was doing on that play. He hesistated too long to throw to throw. And then he just holds the ball on the single by Wright.
One physical error (catcher’s interference)…..and 2 mental errors on 2 different throws home.
Brian McCann is not helping Derek Lowe any. Yet many of you want to see McCann remain a catcher.

Soph……….Castillo should have never been up at the plate in the 2nd. McCann’s catcher’s interference gave the Mets an extra out. All those runs are unearned.
My blister is bothering me. This game is meaningless to me. I know that the Braves are going to pay me regardless. Remember I am the #1 pitcher for this team. Well, I get paid like the #1 pitcher. Oh yeah, Norton is batting for me. I am out!!!! Good luck Braves.
“Atlanta Braves right-hander Derek Lowe had one of the worst innings and outings of his career last night, prompting team beat reporter David O’Brien to write the following:
Get this: After Lowe gave up a career-high eight runs in the excruciating fourth inning of the Mets’ 9-4 win last night (he was finally pulled with two outs after the ninth hit of the inning), it made it the fourth time since the 2007 All-Star break that Lowe has given up at least 10 hits and eight runs while failing to make it out of the fourth inning of a starter.
O’Brien was spot-on here regarding Lowe:
Is he a bonafide ace? No. He’s a durable guy who you can count on to make every start and give you a lot of innings, and when his sinkerball is on he can shut a team down. But last night’s game served as a bit of a reminder that there’s three years and $45 mill remaining on Lowe’s contract after this season.
And a reminder that when you’re not a strikeout pitcher, it’s tough to stop the bleeding sometimes. Particularly if you’re left in to get that elusive groundball out even as things — meaning the game — are caving around you.
True, Lowe is not a great pitcher. This should come as a shock to no one–not even Atlanta general manager Frank Wren. Wren didn’t sign Lowe to a four-year, $60 million deal to be a great pitcher, though. He signed him to be a guy who would give the Braves 200-plus average-to-decent innings over four seasons.
FanGraphs provides a great resource for assessing player value, listing what a player would receive on the open market based on his performance. Lowe, it is worth pointing out, has outperformed his actual salary the last three years. This season he’s been worth $12.5 million, which is somewhat close to his current average annual salary of $15 million.
Clearly, Lowe’s value lies in the fact that he’s not likely to be below average in a season and he’s going to give the Braves 200-plus innings. That’s not as valuable to a team as what a CC Sabathia or Johan Santana will give, but a) those type of pitchers are obviously much more expensive and b) Tommy Hanson could be one of the 15 best pitchers in the National League within the next four years at millions less than the going rate for one of the 15 best.
All things considered, the Braves are in fine shape on a starting rotation front. Anyone who expected Lowe to be, or thinks he should be, a Cy Young contender simply because of his contract needs to do their research.”
Soph……….Castillo should have never been up at the plate in the 2nd.
I know and I agree but the whole inning can’t be put on that in my opinion. They hit the ball hard and like I said before, walking Castillo hurt too. Stuff happens, gotta keep your cool and work your way through it. Just my opinion though.
I cannot defend Lowe anymore. Blister me this, blister me that… he hasn’t been what a $15m a year pitcher should be since his first few starts way back in April.
