One would guess in the bottom of the ninth Boobie will pinch hit Chipper, NOrton and Goreki and if anyone doesn’t strike outand gets on base(like an HBP) Ricky Escobar sprained ankle and all can pinch run
Isn’t Huddy’s option a mutual one? Meaning that he can decided to decline? If he pitches like this the rest of the season he may decide he can go elsewhere and get a multi-year deal. It may force the Braves to give him a new multi-year deal, which I don’t think would be a bad thing.
Heck, if Chipper gets a multi-year deal, and Lowe gets a multi-year deal, and Hampton gets a multi-year deal, we sure as heck better try a multi-year deal with Hudson.
Anyone get tired of Jim Powell getting excited on the radio about flyballs to the warning track? He has gotten my hopes up about 5 times in this series, and all those balls were caught. He should know that when the Braves hit a flyball that appears long enough to leave the park it is merely a ball to the warning track.
I love National League baseball and I hate the DH, but man the National League must suck this season. First it was Smoltz, then Penny, now even Jose Contreras is looking like a good pitcher.
My mistake the announcers on the radio claimed Owings was pitching that whole inning. they finally now own up that it was not Owings. That’s a mistake Boobie could make.
I think we are about to wear out the Aussie. Nice work for the year Pierre, but you just can’t pitch every wingle friggin day
Brooks Conrad continues to prove why he should have been our pinch hitter off the bench all year long. He’d probably have 30-40 RBIS this year if put in the positions Norton has been in all year long.
Rob from SC, good point. I just don’t see a spot for him on this team next year. Can’t have a 15 million dollar long relief/spot starter.
And as much as I wanted him last off-season (and he has provided what we needed – innings, reliability), it’s going to come down to money. Money LM more than likely won’t pony up to do what is right. Which would be to go with a rotation of:
Hudson, Vazquez, JJJ, Hanson and KK
Wren’s job is to put the best 5 out there. Unfortunately, money is going to come into play.
I guess the other option (without a trade or two) is to make KK the closer. With him warming up in the pen, perhaps we’ll get a glimpse of what he might be able to do out there. He’s got the stuff. And 6-8 million for him as a closer, is a helluva lot more acceptable than as a spot starter.
The question (without trades coming into play), is how is the team better? With Lowe in the rotation, and KK in the pen, or the other way around.
One could argue, that the rotation might be better with KK in it. But, one could also argue your point. That Lowe might be disaster out there, but as a 5th starter he would be MORE than adequate (if you can get by the 15 million dollar salary).
But I can’t see how Hudson is NOT in this rotation next year, if healthy I’d take him over Vazquez. That’s been my stance for 9 months. I’m not changing now.
AndyC,
I don’t think, no matter how well Hudson pitches, he can become more financially secure by voiding his option and taking a $1 million buyout. And even if he could, I think he likes it here and wouldn’t void the option if the Braves exercised it.
Stop the insanity, and quit paying these players for past performance. It’s time to start paying for production incentives. I’m sure some of the faithful brethren can come uo with a formulation.
Example:
Single = $1000
Double = $2000
Triple = $3000
Dinger = $5000
Strike out = minus $2000 (looking $2500)
rbi = $3500
GWH = $5000
WALK OFF = $10,000
START GAME = $6000
ERROR = MINUS $3500
PINCH HIT = $8000
ETC
MFin04, couldn’t agree more with your 4:17. How many times has Norton failed to make contact when doing so would have meant a run, and possibly a different outcome for those games?
Will Hudson provide a spark? Not unless he can hit and drive in 3 or 4 runs, something the other eight guys in the lineup can’t do…………..4 runs, in three days, against the REDS?????
But I can’t see how Hudson is NOT in this rotation next year, if healthy I’d take him over Vazquez. That’s been my stance for 9 months. I’m not changing now.N8
Good post, and I agree. I like what Vazquez has done for us this year, but if it’s really going to come down to Huddy plus the prospects we get for Javy, or Javy, I’ll take Hudson every time.
C-note how about a few more minuses like for losses, blown saves, caught stealing, failed bunts, home runs in blow out loses, strike outs with runners in scoring positioin, GIDP, GITP. GIFP, bases running mistakes. Best part would be the rebates, fans would receive for loses. Bet attendance would be up and management would have some incentive to make the guys hustle. Fans would have the option not to take the rebate if the guys played with some heart.
Totally agree with you, if money isn’t an option. But it will be, unless Wren does a Houdini act with the roster.
You’ve got D-Lowe at 15 Million dollars. You’ve got Vazquez and Hudson at around 12 million each. You’ve got Chipper’s ill-advised contract extension (13 million in 2010). McCann’s salary goes up from 3.5 million to 5.5 million, and we are in dire need of adding some offense.
I’m not sure how Wren can afford to re-sign either Gonzo or Soriano and improve the everyday lineup at the same time.
N8, I know Lowe’s contract isn’t pretty but I think some teams may be willing to listen for a trade like say Boston where they have the money and the history with him and they could use a reliable starter. Thats a longshot so I think its more likely that it is one of thr trio of Hudson/Vazquez/KK that won’t be here next year.
You know, I’ve seen far fewer cries for TP’s head during our current offensive woes than during our offensive problems at the beginning of the season. I wonder why that is?
So your point is that even though Chipper is in a very down season and he’s still OPSing 50 points more than Martin, he should no longer be our 3B? Are you trying to make my point for me?
Prado is making 400,000 and Chipper is making 10-12 million? Obviously Chipper is a better player than Martin, but looking at offensive and defensive production this year and including salary…you have to laugh at Chipper’s numbers, they are just terrible in comparison.
