Rob from SC – Are the Rockies really this much better than us?

No but their team needed a change like we do. Rockies hire a new manager that made same players believe they could win. I pray that Wren does the same this off season.

What minor leaguers have a chance to crack the 25 man roster next spring besides Heyward, Freeman, and Kimbrel

Matt Young

Anyone else?

I think Bobby’s statue should have him posing like “The Thinker,” and then have a nearby statue of a pitcher (your choice…Millwood, Lowe, etc) getting rocked.

As long as there’s a statue of Derek Lowe getting rocked in front of him, he can be wrist-deep for all I care.

That Lowe statue can also have “sweat” fountains to cool off fans on hot days.

“A study by Baseball Prospectus’ Dayn Perry in Baseball Between the Numbers found that players do indeed perform better in their “walk years,” with a nine percent average improvement in WARP over the year before and year after their contract season. That performance boost cannot be explained by age, as the average walk year player from 1976-2000 was . . . 31, when a player is usually on the downslope.”

the 25 man play in the bigs next year? There’s a good chance that Freeman won’t make it unless he picks up a good bit in the minors next season. I really doubt many of the 4 you mentioned above will make it unless there are so many injuries that the season will be a waste anyway. If Hicks doesn’t have a real decent AFL, he will be on shaky ground just to stay in the org. He has been old for every level and still can’t hit better than .230. That ain’t gonna cut it in the show. A lot will depend on how successful Wren is this winter in making the improvements that he wants. The better he does, the less likely those guys are to get here in 2010. But you will be thrilled to know that barring injury Heyward will be up sometime, ;)

Cardinals/Yankees WS”

Even with the addition of Lee to the Phillies and the start he got off to I still thought the Cards with their additions would be the favorites. Their rotation is solid. They’ve got the best player in baseball and a lineup to go with him now and they clearly have the advantage in the closer department. Yankees are clear and away the favorites in the AL but on a personal note i’m hoping they get knocked out the 1st round similar to the way the Cubs did last year. I’m personally rooting for the Angels.

Oh and to speak to that article by Olney that DOB posted earlier, the AL out of the two leagues seem to have less parity with the teams leading the divisions over there also being the teams with the highest payrolls in each division. Even the current wild-card leader is a high payroll team. In the NL only the Dodgers are the team with the highest payroll in the division leading theirs and they have the smallest lead so thats tenuous. Don’t know if they fix it by doing what he suggested with the schedules but its something to think about.

PITCHING WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS???

How good does your pitching really needs to be?

In the last 20 seasons how many WS Champions have had a pitching staff with an ERA below 3.80?

2005 White sox
2002 Angels
1995 Braves
1991 Twins
1990 Reds
1989 As
1988 LAD

You can easily notice how things have changed in the last 20 years………20 years ago, having a team with an extremely good pitching staff, was a most………times have changed……… you can now win WS titles with staff full of clowns and team ERA above 4.50, as the Cards did it in 2006 and yankees in 2000.

Bobby Cox’s Future = Bocce Ball

Steve from OH

September 7th, 2009
9:39 pm

Via Joe Sheehan:

“Which invites the question: What team could go 2007 Rockies (winning 14 of their last 15 to win the Wild Card) or 2007 Phillies (winning 13 of their last 17 to win the NL East) to climb from well out of the races to the playoffs? Those two teams each had the common thread that they did one thing better than anyone else in the league. For the Rockies, it was defense; that year’s Rockies were the best defensive team in the NL as measured by Park-Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. For the Phillies, it was their offense, the best in the NL by Equivalent Average.

A team that does one thing better than everyone else seems, intuitively, like a strong candidate to make that kind of run. If you’re already the best at one element of the game, you only need to bring the rest of the team up to par or so to have a big advantage. It’s comparable to how having a roster with stars and scrubs is easier to upgrade than a roster with a bunch of slightly above-average players. The Phillies’ bullpen pitched out of its mind down the stretch that season, helping the team allow just four runs a game over its final 17 contests. Added to that league-leading offense, it was a recipe for a long stretch of wins. Similarly, the Rockies scored at least six runs in 10 of their final 15 games, pairing that with run prevention driven by that great defense. So in looking for teams that could do the same this year, I want to find teams with the best units in the game and see if any of those teams swim in the pool of fringe contenders.

While that’s not hard to do, it leads to answers so counterintuitive that the mind recoils. For example, the Braves have the second-best rotation in baseball as measured by Support-Neutral Value, a couple of ticks behind the Giants’. I might argue that the Braves’ rotation is, on balance, better than that of the Giants; the Giants have the top two starters in the league in Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, but also have been using Joe Martinez, Ryan Sadowski, and now Brad Penny in their fifth-starter’s slot. As good as Barry Zito has been relative to expectations, he’d be the seventh-best starter for the Braves. In fact, since calling up Tommy Hanson on June 7, the Braves have gotten exactly one start—by Kris Medlen—from a below-average pitcher. With that kind of rotation, one giving you at least an average performance every single night, the Braves seem like a terrific sleeper candidate for a strong September push.

Then again, the Braves just scored four runs in three games—at home—against the Cincinnati Reds. I’ve been pimping their shot at the postseason all year long, but after watching most of the weekend series, it’s hard to sit here and point to them as a candidate for Rockiedom. The numbers don’t lie—their rotation is great, and we’re looking for teams with that one great element—but when they’re seven games out and hitting like the Padres, even I’m off that bandwagon. Maybe.”

He kinda also makes a really good point about how good the Rockies are–not only do they lead the league in defensive efficiency, they’re 5th in the NL in EqA and 5th in FIP.

Of course, the Braves are 7th in the NL in EqA (.255, meaning they’re below-average overall) and 1st in FIP, but they’re near the bottom in defensive efficiency. Defense is a big need for this team, as is a power bat.

Steve from OH

September 7th, 2009
9:43 pm

I take that back–the Rockies are 5th in defensive efficiency in the NL. But the Braves are 21st overall…not good. On the plus side, the Mets are 26th!

The Braves made a good late season run however, without more support from the “absent” ownership, and better play from both journeymen and the bullpen, the team was not going to surpass it’s mediocre make-up. The Braves are fortunate to be a .500 team this year. Perhaps, with good health, and some dramatic changes on the field, they will compete in 2010 or 2011.

It might be time to retire both Chipper and Bobby Cox. I don’t think the front office is likely to spend money, they’ve proven that this season, so the Braves need to really make some dramatic changes in the offseason.

Thank you and RHR for the kind words. It is mostly financial because of health problems. I’ve spent every day of the last 7 months at a specialist for 90 minutes getting an IV infusion. And, yes, Stanford.

RHR- OK, got the retro thing. Honestly I just didn’t think it was that clever, especially for someone of Bubdylans pedigree. He’s probably the funniest and most clever blogger on here.

Anyway, glad you guys liked it. I have no problem getting roasted on here. Have to expect that in the enemies foxhole.

BAS- Extra innings? Please. I have MLB playing a game in my yard once a week. Feel free to drop by some time.
