jeffrey, you have to honor your award by helping out a person in need. By the way, please tell me you really didn’t tell him to use the catchphrase, shalamadingdong?
I agree that Ilbanez numbers this season have been inflated because of the Phillies lineup, and playing in a sandbox. But From 2004-2008, Ilbanez averaged 22.6 HR, 97.8 RBI.
Although Ilbanez has sucked the second half, if we had anyone that put up anything close to his first half numbers, the Braves would be leading either the division or the wildcard. Unfortunately, early in the season, we were stuck with the likes of Schaffer, Frenchy, and KJ.
If the Braves got production similar to Ilbanez’ average from LF, they would have been thrilled. (I will ignore Dunn’s numbers, because you guys are right. His defense is atrocious, and he probably strikes out 160 times for the year).
I hope that Frank Wren will be able to fix the offense like he fixed the pitching.
Wow! We really had a shot today if those two great players didnt run into each other.
Maybe we should try and sign Dunn. He hits a lot of homers!
Hope Bobby comes back next year. He has earned the right to stay as long as he wants. Forget winning. He reminds me of my granpa. I love my grandpa.
I like fast teams. Wish we had speed on this team. But thats ok. We will sign Dunn and everything will be ok next year.

It’s possible. He was actually pretty nice the last few days. I’m still confused about why he was painting scenarios with me and you as coaches for UGA though.
Looking at the 1B list, say you cut it off at Butler for the caliber player you want. Of those, only LaRoche, Thome, and Branyan are scheduled to hit free agency. I believe Branyan will sign an extension with Seattle and his defense sucks. Thome almost can’t play 1B, much less play it well. And LaRoche is the best FA 1B on the market and his first time hitting FA, so he’ll likely be looking to cash in on a huge FA contract. I don’t see a solution via free agency.
That leaves trades. Taking the players that will have 1 year left on their contract, you have (with their 2010 salary):
Derrek Lee – $13 million – RH hitter
Carlos Pena – $10.125 million – LH hitter
Paul Konerko – $12 million – RH hitter
Lyle Overbay – $7 million – LH hitter
Prince Fielder is signed for 2010 at $10.5 million and will be arbitration-eligible in 2011. He’s the only one with 2 years left on his contract in that group.
If the Cubs were willing to trade Derrek Lee or the White Sox were willing to trade Konerko and he would accept a trade that would be, I think, the Braves’ best option at 1B. If not, maybe a deal for Pena or Fielder could be swung, provided the Braves would be LH-heavy again. Overbay would remind everyone of Casey Kotchman at 1B (with slightly more power), but he’d be effective and he’s fairly cheap. Though he doesn’t fix the Braves biggest systematic weakness. But it looks a bit rosier than sticking Prado at 1B and KJ or Conrad at 2B. Or depending on Canizares at 1B.
The thing is, I’m not so sure our lefties will kill lefties anymore. McCann has been bad against lefties this season. Schafer is noticeably worse at hitting lefties. Kotchman is gone and he always hit lefties alright. Chipper has been better from the right side for most of the season, will that continue? The only players we’ll have next year that mash lefties are Prado, Diaz, David Ross, and possibly KJ.

Good point. They take a lot of rest to completely heal. He’ll need to take it easy for a while when the season’s over.
