Look, I’m not defending Norton. He’s been pretty bad (though stellar at walking!). But who’s Bobby going to use instead? KJ? No, you’d bitch about him. Ross? No, backup catcher. Church? Hurt. Infante? Maybe, but with Prado, LaRoche and Chipper teetering close to injury you need your utility guy.
Some of you just get so, I don’t know, disturbing with the Norton thing…
August 31st, 20095:29 pm
Weather is going to be a major issue tonight. Was going to the game ,but had second thoughts since it is thundering and very dark. I live about 25 miles from the stadium.
Nova Scotia Steve
With Kawakrappy goin today and Hudson tomorrow…I’ll be extremely happy if we win ONE of those games.
August 31st, 20095:30 pm
Necromancer – You an me both, could be worse tho, could still be Time Warner.
I stuck a needle in myself so I could feel something
August 31st, 20095:31 pm
No one would complain about ANYONE hitting for Norton. And that is saying A LOT. Kawakami, Lowe, Jurrjens, Vazquez, Medlen…anyone of those guys instead of Norton. That is how bad it has become.
August 31st, 20095:32 pm
No prob. I like digging up stats…it cann be fun!
Rally McTurtle’s rather unrelaxed…he figures BMac’s just getting a regular night off, but he’s also wondering if there’s another reason why he’s not in the lineup.
I’ve tried to tell him everything’s fine, but there’s just no talking to some turtles.
Furman, They have the more durable, inflatable and adjustable blow up dolls, now. So you dont have to send it out for repairs as often, and if you are like me..A Switch hitter., they come reversible too.

It’s really looking like rain down in the Keys, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be beautiful in an hour…..
August 31st, 20095:35 pm
As much money as they’ve lost with XM/Sirrius Radio, I’m sure they’ll take it from wherever they can get it…
I miss you too Furman…
August 31st, 20095:36 pm
According to baseball-reference: Greg Norton is 2 for 24 (.083) in late AND close games (with 1 RBI).
August 31st, 20095:37 pm
Any info as to why BMac gets a day off. Is it just to give him a break, is it because he struggles against the Marlins pitcher?
And when is Chipper getting a day off? Doesnt Bobby realize he needs a break? Hopefully, when the rosters are expanded, let Prado play 3B, and try Conrad at 2B
at least he has an rbi i guess. Prob why Cox keeps going with him.

Piedmont Blues (ex-BFIR)
I’ll take the 2000 season when Piaza had 38 HR and 113 RBI in 482 AB’s, 136 games. This is the year they went to the WS. That year Todd Pratt was the backup catcher. He played in 80 games had 160 AB’s with 8 HR and 25 RBI. So far, McCann 108 games 388 AB’s and Ross 44 games 109 AB’s. Your point is valid if you compare AB’s. However, Pratt played in 80 games which probably means he caught alot of 8th and 9th innings to save Piaza’s strenght because the Mets also carried Vance Wilson, a 3rd catcher. The Braves don’t carry Sammons because Norton is way to valuable as a pinch hitter.
I’m so confused
B-Mac usually gets a day off on Sundays when we have a day game, but we had night game. Only reason he is out is to get a break. We would never sit Chipper nor Mac if they were in a slump. Cox thinks if someone is hitting bad (Norton) that they will just come out of it. Good strategy?
dogsbrekky (disappointments are rare)
Ben – err a little too much information there mate, “not that there is anything wrong with that” though.
What strikes me about the fillies series was the unassailable truth that we are undermanned as far having a HUGE bat goes
Wendy (Isis's Sister)
I hope for the love of God the Braves call up Conrad so we don’t have to hear about it anymore – not to mention what he may do for the team – which is secondary at this point.
N Nine (Norton 2010)
August 31st, 20095:39 pm
He has value. 1/ 25th of the team…of course he will be used, take that Conrad.
Norton is hotter than Chipper, look up the numbers. I smell a 3-4 day if he starts..YA BABY!
August 31st, 20095:40 pm
You guys can fixate on Norton. I’m sorry I can’t have him hit better for you but it is what it is. He’s on of the few who has experience pinch hitting. He’s having an off year, and it’s safe to say that’s proved to be a weakness of this bench. Not a power bat to come off the bench and give you an instant homer. But if you guys want to argue with Bobby that Barbaro Canizares should hit instead of Norton, I’ll let you write him a letter or something.
I wonder how many folks will be at LS stadium, tonight?
Shamus Thacker – Bottom line? not really. The Braves were part of a stock deal and unless said Braves lose money and cost LM, then no. As long as the Braves break even or losses are minimal, they won’t shake anything up. While I’m sure they would like a profit when they sell, they will take the $600 million or whatever it is and be happy.
August 31st, 20095:41 pm
This team is a joke as long as Norton is still on this team.
August 31st, 20095:42 pm
You are over shooting I think. Closer to 40-50 I would say.
MRI on Nate McLouth’s hamstring was negative, which is good. Braves are still discussing what the next step should be, whether he’ll head back out and play some more games in the minors to test it or re-join the team.
Oh, and Frank ruled out winter ball for Schafer. He won’t be doing that. But he’s expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Carroll Rogers Any way possibe we can get a 1 on 1 Q&A?? Pleeease!
Bobby Is Senile
August 31st, 20095:43 pm
You can’t argue with a senile man. He is what he is. Not his fault he’s senile. It’s management’s fault that his senility is allowed to continue to reside in the Braves dugout.
I think that what everyone is saying is that the move to send Conrad down in favor of KJ and Norton was not a very good one.
You have to admit, even if Phil Niekro were to come out of retirement to fill in as a pinch hitter, that may be a more viable alternative than Norton.
Exaggeration, of course..
August 31st, 20095:44 pm
Sometimes having a husband that watches sports all day, now that we have a sattelite dish. Being a blow up doll sounds nice. Never hungry, always having company, and at night, about the same position that I usually am anyways. Thank you guys, when hubby comes home, I will tell him I want a new watch for my birthday, and better get a better answer as last time..When he asked me..Whats wrong with the clock on your stove.
August 31st, 20095:45 pm
Thanks for the info Ms. Rogers…
McFann’s post on Norton’s stats says it all. When Bobby sends him out there, it’s NOT what Bobby thinks would be best for the TEAM, it’s what’s best for Bobby’s emotions, and Ed Norton. Anybody in their right mind should be able to see, you don’t send the dude of the .000 average out there with the game on the line. ANYBODY else, not Mr .000!
The late great dead racehorse could hit better than that drongo on your bench by the name of Gregory Norton. PleaSE promote Barbaro and drop the current idiot PH.
Braves fans everywhere

Wow, a blog impersonator has marked me.
August 31st, 20095:47 pm
I wrote a post on Norton…??
Carroll – you rock, love your updates.
I realize the .000 average is for the ninth inning, but THAT’s when he bats with game on line.
I could blow the game better than Norton…anyday….anytime…anywhere for that matter.
August 31st, 20095:48 pm
McFann, I thought it was you, let me check…
PleaSE promote Barbaro and drop the current idiot PHDOGS
My fantasy team would take a hit then…not cool doggs…
August 31st, 20095:49 pm
McFann – you call DOB Chief but Carroll Ms. Rogers. She needs a cool nickname too, like Crusher or Spike
Necromancer – I had someone do it to me too today…I think it happened to CB as well…
I vote for Crusher

Matter of fact, I’m not entirely sure how/when the whole “Chief” thing got started, either. But it stuck.

The revenge of Paul Lentz.
Piedmont Blues (ex-BFIR)

Piling on here …
Who’s the best pinch hitter in the NL this season? Seth Smith of the Rockies. 16/33 with 9 BB, and an OPS of 1.460 … and he’s not quite 27 years old.
So who says you have to have a veteran who’s no longer able to play every day as your top pinch hitter? (Fact of the matter is, I’m shocked Smith isn’t getting more playing time in the Colorado OF.)
The Braves have a guy on the bench who might fill a similar role. Kelly Johnson. Limited sample size, to be sure, but off the bench, he’s 4/10 with 4 BB and an OPS of 1.271. And he’s not getting any playing time with Prado out there.
Again, limited sample size, but better than relying on Norton, don’t you think?
August 31st, 20095:53 pm
Good thing he’s not Paul Lentz and right 99% of the time. Otherwise I’d be scared that we’d lose.
Fantasy Football Draft tomorrow night at 7pm for our league at espn, so be there signed up players cause I kind of don’t know what I am doing !
CaliChopper, Liberty Media is a business. The object of ANY business is to make as much money for shareholders as possible. They use ANY avenue available for cash influx. To say they don’t care whether they make money off the Braves is kinda ludicrous…
Get to know your Braves…

I didn’t realize Greg Norton was a second round draft pick. Good thing McCann didn’t turn out like him.
August 31st, 20095:56 pm
BFIR – I was surprised last night that KJ (as much as I think he sucks) did NOT get a shot in the 9th
And, CaliChopper, if they’re not worried about making, or losing, money on the Bravos, why have such a low spending limit?
August 31st, 20095:57 pm
Is rally turtle stretching?
McFann I think we should give your mann a break and watch Norton. Wouldn’t be fun watching him catch? I’m sorry if we cann’t agree. I still respect everyone’s opinion, even though it’s been one tough blog lately….
August 31st, 20095:58 pm
Shamus – I like you but I must correct you. The aim of Liberty Media is not to make money for (it’s) shareholders… it is to do nefarious sheety tax driven “cash flow” deals so that management (Malone and co) can pay themselves obscene amounts of loot… it is one of the more horrendous companies I have ever studied (and that includes many dodgy Aussie spec mining dogs with fleas)
August 31st, 20096:00 pm
“You all are Cox apologists”
Dude, you are seriously dense. Why the f*** do you come on here EVERY DAY and say the EXACT SAME SH!T? Don’t you think we got it the 50,037,582,581,304 time you said it? Good god. Can you not add anything else to the conversation? Is “Bobby Cox needs to go” all that goes through that peanut-sized head of yours? For christ sake, get a life, man.
August 31st, 20096:01 pm
Automatic outs, Greg Norton 1 per game, Goreki 4 per game, starting pitcher 3 per game, that’s 8 out of 27. We are playing with only 19 outs per game. 6 1/3 innings
BTW- Noron’s middle name is Blakemoor! He’s one of a kind.
So the question is, why is Bobby so determined to prove that Norton can get the job done? Norton is no longer the issue, it’s Bobby’s determination to prove he is right.
August 31st, 20096:02 pm
That’s a bold statement, man.
If Norton’s catching is equivalent to his hitting, then he’ll catch about every 1 out of every 7 balls, sometimes set up on the wrong side of the plate, and probably take several foul tips in the groin.
Oh sure, the Wainwright for JD Drew doesn’t look so great in hindsight. I don’t think the Braves thought Wainwright wasn’t any good, they just needed/wanted a player like Drew at the time. Had to throw some talent into that trade. I’ve heard Jason Marquis is doing well these days. Let’s wring our hands and moan about that trade. Should have held on to him all these years for him to get really good, I guess. Good call on Hampton though, right? Then there’s Renteria. Hit a slam recently, why’d we let him get away?
I just don’t see wasting much time and energy debating woulda coulda shoulda. We’ve got enough to worry and debate about headed into what looks like an early end to our season again this year. Don’t get too high on Huddy’s comeback?? That way we don’t get our hopes dashed again – but I’d put some of my hard-earned $$$$ ON his efforts thru Sept. and Oct. We’ll see.
No, he just sorta jumped when he saw BMac was out…now he’s all tense.
(I’m telling you, Rally, it’s just a day off…he hasn’t had one in a week, ya know!)
Uuummm…don’t know. How’s Norton’s D back there? Gotta be better than BMac’s or everyone will REALLY hate on him…
Isn’t Liberty also involved in the distribution of some porn as well?
Chipper has always been one of my favorite players but it appears age may be catching up with him rather quickly. He is nowhere close to the ball player he was last year. Unfortunately it happens sometimes.
August 31st, 20096:03 pm
MFin04 made the Norton post McFann, sorry…
Nice post MFin
August 31st, 20096:04 pm
bahaha! I make a motion that we start calling Greg Norton “Blakemoor”
Heh, chilidog75. I meant to end the boldness after his name. I just got a little too excited I guess.
August 31st, 20096:05 pm
Shamus Thacker – Liberty Media didn’t go out and buy the Braves as a money maker, The Braves were part of a stock deal and when the tax ramifications are over they will sell, so if they are around break even, plus or minus, no they don’t care. Example? I’m sure you had the same complaints about Time Warner and all they did was restrict payrole, Did they change upper management? No, did they replace Bobby? No. Unless you here about a high ranking club official being shown the door, LM is happy as is till they can sell without penalty…..
necromancer – nothing wrong with human beings expressing themselves “naked” artistically in all kinds of positions
Random Blog Question: who is the player (Giants, maybe?), and why to they call him Kung Fu Panda? (I really don’t know, I’m asking.)
Is Reeeeed for real, or is he just trying to get people angry at him? Because he’s just coming off as a doofus
August 31st, 20096:06 pm
Choppinmama – Kung Fu Panda is Pablo Sandoval of the Dodgers. I’m not sure why they call him that, but my guess is because he’s big but friendly (he’s pretty portly)
August 31st, 20096:07 pm
Liberty Media is the first company I’ve ever heard of whose goal is not to make money. Interesting concept…
McFann Don’t know, but like Jeffrey d said, he might get a few bounces of his groin and be placed on 60 day DL. That would calm the blog down a bit IMO. He needs regular AB’s or he’ll be rusty, he can’t do any worse than Chipper, right??
August 31st, 20096:08 pm
“MLB GM’s stupid to sign slant eyed player.”
Hadn’t you better hurry off to your KKK meeting?
From what I heard, Sandoval’s original nickname was just “Panda” (for the reasons jeffrey d pointed out), and they added the “Kung Fu” when the movie came out.
August 31st, 20096:09 pm
Matt Stairs has come off the bench and hitless in 27abs and has 1 hit since late June. He’s killing the Phillies!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t believe that Charlie Manuel has a job! Only 8 games in first place, man that guy is killing that team with his decisions regarding pinch hitters.
August 31st, 20096:10 pm
jeffrey d I noticed I called him Noron! That might be cooler!
N Nine He needs regular AB’s or he’ll be rusty, he can’t do any worse than Chipper, right??
yeah but Matt Stairs is a power threat at least.
I’ll take Stairs over Norton any day of the week.
