Look, I’m not defending Norton. He’s been pretty bad (though stellar at walking!). But who’s Bobby going to use instead? KJ? No, you’d bitch about him. Ross? No, backup catcher. Church? Hurt. Infante? Maybe, but with Prado, LaRoche and Chipper teetering close to injury you need your utility guy.

Some of you just get so, I don’t know, disturbing with the Norton thing…

Rally McTurtle’s rather unrelaxed…he figures BMac’s just getting a regular night off, but he’s also wondering if there’s another reason why he’s not in the lineup.

Carroll,

Any info as to why BMac gets a day off. Is it just to give him a break, is it because he struggles against the Marlins pitcher?

And when is Chipper getting a day off? Doesnt Bobby realize he needs a break? Hopefully, when the rosters are expanded, let Prado play 3B, and try Conrad at 2B

I’ll take the 2000 season when Piaza had 38 HR and 113 RBI in 482 AB’s, 136 games. This is the year they went to the WS. That year Todd Pratt was the backup catcher. He played in 80 games had 160 AB’s with 8 HR and 25 RBI. So far, McCann 108 games 388 AB’s and Ross 44 games 109 AB’s. Your point is valid if you compare AB’s. However, Pratt played in 80 games which probably means he caught alot of 8th and 9th innings to save Piaza’s strenght because the Mets also carried Vance Wilson, a 3rd catcher. The Braves don’t carry Sammons because Norton is way to valuable as a pinch hitter.

B-Mac usually gets a day off on Sundays when we have a day game, but we had night game. Only reason he is out is to get a break. We would never sit Chipper nor Mac if they were in a slump. Cox thinks if someone is hitting bad (Norton) that they will just come out of it. Good strategy?

You guys can fixate on Norton. I’m sorry I can’t have him hit better for you but it is what it is. He’s on of the few who has experience pinch hitting. He’s having an off year, and it’s safe to say that’s proved to be a weakness of this bench. Not a power bat to come off the bench and give you an instant homer. But if you guys want to argue with Bobby that Barbaro Canizares should hit instead of Norton, I’ll let you write him a letter or something.

Shamus Thacker – Bottom line? not really. The Braves were part of a stock deal and unless said Braves lose money and cost LM, then no. As long as the Braves break even or losses are minimal, they won’t shake anything up. While I’m sure they would like a profit when they sell, they will take the $600 million or whatever it is and be happy.

I think that what everyone is saying is that the move to send Conrad down in favor of KJ and Norton was not a very good one.

You have to admit, even if Phil Niekro were to come out of retirement to fill in as a pinch hitter, that may be a more viable alternative than Norton.

Exaggeration, of course..

Piling on here …

Who’s the best pinch hitter in the NL this season? Seth Smith of the Rockies. 16/33 with 9 BB, and an OPS of 1.460 … and he’s not quite 27 years old.

So who says you have to have a veteran who’s no longer able to play every day as your top pinch hitter? (Fact of the matter is, I’m shocked Smith isn’t getting more playing time in the Colorado OF.)

The Braves have a guy on the bench who might fill a similar role. Kelly Johnson. Limited sample size, to be sure, but off the bench, he’s 4/10 with 4 BB and an OPS of 1.271. And he’s not getting any playing time with Prado out there.

Again, limited sample size, but better than relying on Norton, don’t you think?

Oh sure, the Wainwright for JD Drew doesn’t look so great in hindsight. I don’t think the Braves thought Wainwright wasn’t any good, they just needed/wanted a player like Drew at the time. Had to throw some talent into that trade. I’ve heard Jason Marquis is doing well these days. Let’s wring our hands and moan about that trade. Should have held on to him all these years for him to get really good, I guess. Good call on Hampton though, right? Then there’s Renteria. Hit a slam recently, why’d we let him get away?

I just don’t see wasting much time and energy debating woulda coulda shoulda. We’ve got enough to worry and debate about headed into what looks like an early end to our season again this year. Don’t get too high on Huddy’s comeback?? That way we don’t get our hopes dashed again – but I’d put some of my hard-earned $$$$ ON his efforts thru Sept. and Oct. We’ll see.
