1954 NY Giants (3 in top 8 ERA) – WS champs
1966 LAD (2.68 combined ERA) – swept in WS
1986 NYM (3 in top 5 ERA) – WS champs
1971 BAL (4 20-game winners, combined 2.89 ERA) – lost in WS
1988 NYM (2.92 combined ERA) – lost in NLCS
2003 OAK (3.42 combined ERA) – lost in ALDS
1906 CHC (1.63 combined ERA) – lost in WS
So, out of these, you have 3 WS winners. And I thought teams with the best pitching always won it all, in spite of the manager! Gee, maybe Bobby isn’t such an idiot…
Norton is not Wren’s call. How much do you think Wren actually has invested in Norton? Bobby is out to prove that his decision about Norton was correct even to the detriment of this team. Bobby is at a stage where he has put himself before the team in order to prove he is HOF caliber. This is the biggest decision facing the organization at seasons end. Bobby or Frank

If this is the case you pinch hit McCann with someone who can bunt…like a Javier Vazquez…
Now at the same time…I understand if Bobby wanted to try to surprise bunt em…
But the fact of the matter is…We need to get those runners into scoring position…second and third and try and remove the double play.
If it doesn’t work…it doesn’t work…
But at least it was an attempt to move up the runner and you avoid the DP…the errors were huge in the game yes…but that McCann AB was a critical part of the game…game changer really
If this newspaper wants to call itself “legitimate”, somebody needs to ask Cox why he continues to send Norton out there. Then ask Wren why the hell he hasn’t been released yet.
Carroll, take care of that, would you? We know you’re too legit to quit, LOL.
Steve-OH, I can’t take potshots at “dipsh!t frat guys”, LOL. Too many of my brothers might take offense.
Hey, my past life is just a series of wrong turns and life errors, I guess. I’ve worn blue blazers and khakis, and dated girls who wore dresses to football games. Gave me a low threshold to overcome in my search for personal growth.
Nova Scotia Steve – He would say, Norton is a experianced, professional hitter under pressure. Who is a switch hitter and so lets me carry Logan in the pen and not another bat. Hey have you seen, he’s had a few good walks lately…..
Chewbacca/Barbaras or whatever his name is would be a much better pinch hitter than Norton. so would conrad. But diory has proved he cant hit. My thoughts would be to find the one that can make the best contact. That is the one you want to bring up. when they get a chance to hit in critical situations you want someone who can put the bat on the ball. Gorecki has played good outfield but has shown that he cant hit.
It never has “seemed” to me that the best pitching alone wins the world series. However, when team’s have multiple power arms, that team often seems to gain an advantage in a play-off series, especially a short one (5-gamer).
Having to face the likes of Kerry Wood 2x in a 5 gamer, or Schilling and Johnson 4 times in a 7-gamer, etc., is a pretty daunting task, especially when you have a manager that seems afraid to do anything unconventional to put pressure on the defense.
Look at the Braves pitching. Smoltz was rarely considered to be the Braves best pitcher during the 1990’s; however, he was, with little doubt, the Braves best post-season pitcher, and one of the best post-season pitcher of all time.
Maddux and Glavine both had some huge games in the post-season, but in general, they were less dominating in the post-season (Maddux especially) than they were in the regular season.
Personally, I think if Steve Avery had continued to develop, rather than getting burned out, he and Smoltz might have become the dominant 1-2 punch that the Braves needed to reel off more titles.

brent a.–I like team ERA better than individual ERA. Like anything else, you need to look at multiple things…personally, I look at FIP, tRA, ERA, K/9, WHIP, BB/9, etc. all together…just like you wouldn’t look at just BA or just OBP…gotta take BA/OBP/SLG and maybe a linear weight stat all together to get a better picture.
Can one of the sports writers please ask Bobby Cox to explain why he continues to use Norton as his primary pinch hitter? The braves have more talent than the marlins, giants, or rockies but they cannot win close games when critical managerial decisions is the difference between winning and losing. This is the main reason the braves will not make the playoffs. Insanity– to keep dong the same things and expect different results ! Where is the fan outrage ?

Meant to post some notes on BMac vs. Josh Johnson for ya:
BMac hasn’t gotten a hit off Josh Johnson since hitting a solo HR off him in the fourth inning of the July 26th, 2006 game against the Marlins at Turner Field. Since then, he is 0-13 with 3 K’s.
Overall, he’s 5-24 with a double, a homer, 2 RBI, and 4 K’s against Johnson.
Lexbrave, not sure that Brad Penny=improvement. He’s more like a warm body addition. The Braves need a power guy, and from where do you suggest Frank Wren gets one on the waiver wire? Who does he trade? Where does he get the money?

Stop blaming everything on Cox…if Chip makes a better throw and Prado tries a little harder to actually catch the ball. maybe they win last night. Using Norton was dumb, I agree with you all, but nothing else Cox did last night hurt them. How about we get some runs off fat boy Joe Blanton???
Did the Braves give up on Wainwright too soon? Yeah, but my God, it’s not like Glavine/Smoltz/Avery/Mercker were all traded off and won Cy Young’s for other teams. Doesn’t look like Hanson or Jurrjens will be traded any time soon, so the team has and is doing great with their young starters. Wainwright is one damn pitcher… so what and I guarantee he wouldn’t be 16-7 with this offense backing him every start. Jurrjens should have an equal or better record so note to AJC— we’re not losing sleep over him pitching for the Cards because we have two starters equal to him right now.
lexbrave, So the Braves have just sat around and done nothing. So I guess the McLouth, Church and LaRoche deals were just a figment of our imaginations.
McFann, good he’s not in there tonight because even though Ross probably will be carved up by Johnson, at least he won’t doing it batting cleanup, right? Kid needs his rest anyways.
Ken, et al –
For the last time, nobody in the Braves organization owes ANYTHING to the AJC. DOB isn’t Bob Woodward, Carroll isn’t Carl Bernstein and Bobby isn’t Nixon. The AJC derives business, and therefore cash, from covering the Braves. Does it really make sense for DOB to badger and alienate Bobby? Why don’t you go kick your neighbor in the junk and then ask to borrow his car?
Why do you people insist on treating the Norton/KJ/Chipper/etc. issues like major scandals? It’s freaking baseball. Enjoy watching your pretty good team, or quit watching and go back to trying to prove there was a second shooter on the grassy knoll.
i dont know where the braves could find a power hitter, but the braves desperately need a guy who can come off the bench and hit at least above .200. and i know for a fact one of those is out there to be had.
Gorecki stranding men on 2nd and 3rd, (0-3, 2 k’s)
Bobby should be playing Omar in CF, that has been a big managerial mistake, but there are really to many to list.
njbraves – Joe Blanton is heavy isn’t he… still don’t know if we would have hit him any better if was thin… last night’s game encapsulated our year to date where we have let excellent pitching efforts look second rate with 2nd rate thinking and poor fielding
When the ball was hit to LF I was kind of crying at my tv,
Actually, I met Jeff Francoeur at a waffle house before he was traded. We dined on a roast duckling and savory quiche, with a nice Chablis. Our eyes met in that candle lit diner, he took my hand as I shivered. The bum told me he just got traded, and we would never see each other (sniffs) again.
Liberty Media employs a Professional Major-League Baseball Manager, Bobby Cox.
Bobby Cox’s JOB is to win as many games as possible, and in doing so, make the most possible money for Liberty Media. Empty seats do not generate cash.
Bobby Cox should exhibit enough professional decorum to maintain a healthy emotional detachment from players. He can’t make unbiased business decisions (every move Bobby makes is a business decision) because of an unhealthy (decision wise) emotional bond with certain players. When he sends Ed Norton to bat with game on line, is that a sound business decision, or a decision heavily swayed by that bond? His overly-strong emotional attachment to players is a blatant conflict of interest. He’s obviously not doing his job in that regard…
Hey Daslied, for your information if we were in NYC and not Atlanta the reporters would have already found out wtf is up with Bobby using Norton so much and I am sure they would dig up those pictures of Bobby and those animals on his farm that Norton has. The AJC has no balls if they dont want to ask the tough questions.
I can’t believe some people’s obsession with how bad Norton is. He’s a pinch hitter. It’s not like the old man starts him. He won’t be here long so when we lose the focus can turn to what really sinks this team— Chipper and Loaf’s D, stranding runners in crucial parts of the game, injuries, Chipper again, this time his ice cold bat.
tv, im talking about waiver deals, like the rockies and giants have done. mclouth and church were good pickups,, but they aren’t exactly helping the braves being hurt are they?…when they went down to injury you cant just sit back and say we’ll just suffer along until they come back. other teams have gone out and picked up help to bridge injury gaps.. the braves have not.
reid gorecki is not ready to be an every day centerfielder as his struggles have suggested, norton is no longer a capable pinch hitter as his struggles have suggested..those are two glaring needs that the braves could have gotten some help at with a waiver deal.
Come and listen to a story about a man named..Jeff….Poor paisan player, barely kept his average above his Head….Then one day, he was paying off some debts..When Bobby told him he was traded to the Mets…Mets, that is….Sinking fools…Losing stars…
Um no, I wasnt comparing them I was pointing out just the opposite. He would be burried right now if this was NYC for more than the stupid decision of putting Norton into games. Sticking with Kelly & Jordan for half a year come to mind just for this year. Many more bad decisions in many more years. We have won despite him not because of him.
So when the Braves need a bat in CF in Philly, where the outfield is the size of a high school outfield (according to one Brave)and there isn’t that much ground for the CF’er to cover, Bobby puts the kid in Center Field! Why? According to Bobby he likes the kid defense. His defense and range wasn’t really tested and his bat was pretty anemic.
Now they go to Land Shark where the outfield is the size of four football fields and the Center Fielder in fact DOES have lots of ground to cover and Bobby sits the kid and starts Infante in Center!
Shamus Thacker – Liberty Media own the Braves from part of a bussiness deal, as long as the Braves don’t totally turn into a money drain, they could care less. As owners of XM/Sirrius Radio you would think there would be more of a connection there, there isn’t. Ultimately once they have held on to the Braves long enough to satisfy the tax restrictions they have from the deal, they will sell. Liberty Media employs upper management, JS, McGurk, et al, who employ Bobby Cox, who will stay as long as he wants while said upper management remain. Simple as that.
Don’t get me wrong, I would have Infante out there all the time. We need the offense. It’s just that Bobby just went against his own logic using Gorecki in Philly and sitting Infante and then turning it around in Fla.
I know I sound repetitive on this, but a new owner or owners would have changed the “pecking order” of things and would have made the appropriate changes to ensure that the city of Atlanta would once again have a play-off caliber like team.
Don’t get me wrong, the Braves could be worse, but could be a lot better as well…
Looking at Greg Norton’s splits is hilarious. Pretty fun if you get bored.
Has 16 at bats in the 9th inning, 0 for 12 with 4 walks. Wow, folks, thats a .000 batting average in 16 plate appearances. (I just really wanted to type .000 batting average, couldn’t resist!)
There are really some annoying regulars on here lately that arent talking Braves baseball, but rather about their personal life. Well, since this teams offense has scored lately as much as me on a Saturday night, please stop it. I really am a lonely fella, and my blow updoll, Isis, in in the shop, for repairs.
To be fair to Norty, he’s hasn’t got any regular playing time. His timing is off, let’s experiment by plugging him into the lineup. He can find his stroke again. Come on Cox put your buddy in, you did promise him a spot…
nc scoots: when you took girls in dresses to the football games, did you wear cashmere pullover sweaters tucked into your pants, belted with a monogrammed, alligator belt to match your alligator, tasselled loafers? That whole scene was surprising to an incoming USoCarolina freshman from Hawaii. I was used to madras shorts and thongs to everything! Of course, that was waaaayyy back in the day.
MFin04, those numbers would get any other manager fired for just that. But no with Bobby and his increadible luck to have a healthy Maddox, Glavine, Smoltz(sometimes) & plug in 4 guy Avery, Neagle, Milwood for 14 yrs. Did I say that thing about a retarded monkey…… never mind. Despite not because my friends. Wake up.
Furman: Well, since this teams offense has scored lately as much as me on a Saturday night, please stop it. I really am a lonely fella, and my blow updoll, Isis, in in the shop, for repairs.

And you don’t think they care how much the team is worth when they sell? Or how much money they make in the meantime?
Playoff teams are worth more than October vacationers…

Liberty Media owns the Braves.

Mike Piazza wasn’t a bad choice for a cleanup hitter when he was in his prime.

tv, im talking about waiver deals, like the rockies and giants have done. mclouth and church were good pickups,, but they aren’t exactly helping the braves being hurt are they?…when they went down to injury you cant just sit back and say we’ll just suffer along until they come back. other teams have gone out and picked up help to bridge injury gaps.. the braves have not.
reid gorecki is not ready to be an every day centerfielder as his struggles have suggested, norton is no longer a capable pinch hitter as his struggles have suggested..those are two glaring needs that the braves could have gotten some help at with a waiver deal.
