DOB,

Can you ask Bobby why is he starting Gorecki over Infante? Is Gorecki better than Infante?

With Garret in left, Gorecki covers more ground and is a better defensive player that Infante

Ok Bravos lets actually score some runs for JJ this time since you didn’t last time. Got a chance to gain some ground tonight with Colorado losing earlier. I’m starting to get tired of these late sunday night games, haven’t done to well on them lately.

What a great series of trades that was for us. Trading for Renteria, he mentors Escboar for a few years, trade for Jurrjens, use some of those pieces to get Nate McLouth, and today, Edgar’s still helping us out. Thanks, man!

I just don’t understand the Braves dilemma. It’s obvious that Norton should be the one released to make room for Hudson, yet the Braves have apparently decided that Gorecki should be sent down instead. Sending down our extra outfielder (who has actually played quite well the last few games, and especially when McLouth is still hurt) makes absolutely no sense. Norton has done little more than draw a few walks and hit a couple of singles this season; the man isn’t even hitting his own body weight!!! Pitchers have been called upon to pinch-hit occasionally, some of whom have a higher batting average than Norton, and in fewer plate appearances. That is downright pathetic, and has no business on a Major League team. It’s sad enough that we are having to use pitchers to pinch-hit, but sending down a decent bat/fourth outfielder while retaining an almost-automatic out who never plays any defense just makes NO SENSE.

DOB: To respond to your swipe at certain denizens of this blog (which I am sure includes myself), I take pause with this ballclub because this has been a season of too many missed opportunities. If you put together a starting pitching staff with the idea that it is stellar (and it is!), then you must provide the hitting to support this faith.

With the exception of LaRoche (by default) and Prado (also, by default), all the buttons pushed to create consistent hitting has resulted in a maddening inconsistency that may ultimately squander some of the best pitching we have seen down here since the heyday of the Big Three.

It absolutely hurts to watch this club at the plate. And while the Braves may yet create something that may provide the impetus for a run that may take them to a Wild Card berth, I don’t see “it”.

With the exception of Matt Diaz (at the lead-off spot), there is not a single HEALTHY (when I say “healthy”, it is relative to the time of the season; everyone has bumps and cuts) Brave prepared to carry this ball club from the hitting end. There is not a single 30-100-.300 guy on this ball club this season.

For all of us who see great starting pitching such as ours – and this is not something you can depend on for next season – wasted by inept, unprofessional hitting, it saddens and maddens us to lunacy. That an imbecile like Bobby Cox staunchly stays with Greg Norton when every AB is precious to a poor hitting team speaks more to this club’s inability to recognize hitting talent than anything else.

As Disraeli said, there are lies, damn lies, and stats. While the Braves have an improved team BA after the All-Star break, the team scores runs in spaced clusters; most of the games are 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 affairs, win or lose (check the last six games for proof).

The sad fact is that this team has World Series-caliber pitching not supported by second-division hitting. If the Braves sneak into the playoffs because the Giants and Rockies falter, they will be swept in the first round. The only way the Braves will inspire is if this team re-discovers the patient hitting that carried it prior to the LaRoche trade and uses that impetus to finally carry a courageous starting pitching staff.
