If we miss the wild card by one game, which screw up stands out as “the one” that got away?
To me the blown game by Gonzo in Washington after we were riding high sweeping the Phillies. Still makes me cringe thinking about how wild he was and Bobby just sat there watching.
Lew- Many of those people who got taken ignored one of the oldest rules in the book. If it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is. He was returning 12% in a 5% market. Nobody is that smart. Well maybe Paul Lentz is, but I’m just talking about us mere mortals.

“Did any of you guys hear that flushing sound last night? That was the Braves’ post season chances going down the toilet. That makes two series in a row where we have beat you. We have definately seperated the men from the boys in the NL East.”
OMG you mean a phillies team at full strength beating a lesser braves team not at full strength by 1 run has finally ended all playoff hopes we have. You know what, I gotta say you phillies fans keep showing me how knowledgeable you are of the game. Especially if you seem to think that right now at our present state the braves even posed a serious threat to you. I don’t know, seems to me you would be more worried about what the Cards, Dodgers, Rockies or Giants are doing.
jake: you’re dillusional. You have no chance of making the post season. Unless you real off a couple weeks of undefeated baseball and the rockies and giants pull off a major choke job.
If we miss the wild card by one game, which screw up stands out as “the one” that got away?
how about the 3rd game of the season where the braves bullpen imploded and walked in like 4 runs vs the philles? if we miss by one game, that one i will think about…so early in the season, too…they all count….
BMac is not a cleanup hitter. Everybody but Blobby Clux knows that! Daslied, I hope you’re right about Timmer and the Broke D list thig. We need his maturity if nuthin’ else in this thingie!
Lew…. I guess enough answers on your Hudson roster spot but another thought remains.
If memory serves me, rosters go to 30 for the post-season. Should the Braves sneak in will Hudson be put on the 30-man? Cox said he is a starter only which would mean 2 of our starters would be left off a 3-4 starter playoff rotation. I say Hudson would have to be lights out in Sept. to be added to a playoff roster or be sent to the pen with KK if added. Obviously gotta make the playoffs first.
BMac is not a cleanup hitter. Everybody but Blobby Clux knows that!
No, he’s not a cleanup hitter. But people talk like he’s a 7 or 8 Reid Gorecki hitter. Brian McCann is a middle-of-the lineup bat, and in a lineup without a true cleanup hitter, he’s doing alright. I’d rather see LaRoche at cleanup, but some of you are talking like McCann’s hitting like Greg Norton.
You prove my point once again, you philly fans, can’t get anything by you. My post said:

Phil Garner would actually be an excellent choice as manager. He is a hardnosed tough guy who is a “player’s manager” but at the same time isn’t afraid to get in somebody’a ass whether they be a veteran or not.
The double by Ruiz was rightly chnged from an error to a double. You won’t find me defending GA often, but that play was no error. GA was running hard (believe it or not)and was outstretched near the wall when the ball went off the webbing. I’m surprised the Philly scorer gave him an “E” initially.

I have always defended bobby cox. If you look at all my posts I think that he is a great manager but WHY o WHY is Greg Norton still getting at bats at all, and especially with the game on the line. The pitchers have a better chance of getting a hit than him. PLEASE no more G Norton. I know he was a good pinch hitter last year but he is an automatic out and has been for a year. Do you know the definition of stupidity. Doing the same thing and expecting different results.
NS-Steve: oh and WTF with Greg Norton’s AB with 2 outs in the 9th????”"
Steve, I’m not gonna be quite so specific. WTF with Greg Norton’s AB in ANY game!? His performance, this year, is as bad as any I’ve ever seen. YET, in crucial spots, he’s STILL being used. You’re right! WTF!!??
Why, if everyone was so excited that Atlanta was 3.5 out on Sunday morning, is everyone now pissed that Atlanta is 3.5 out on Monday morning? Of course, I guess we were 3.5 on Saturday morning and people were pissed. So, then, tomorrow morning if we’re 3.5 out people will be excited again?
3.5 games is really closer to 5 or 6 than it is to 3.5. You have two teams in front of you. The likelihood that they both fall on their faces 4 games in a row is absurd Also, they play each other 3 more times, which means there is a combo of 3 games that the Braves can’t gain on both the leaders.
That’s some odd logic, MFin. One team ahead, two teams ahead – there’s only one standard to reach. They’ve got to gain 1 game for every 9 played – not that difficult in theory. Can they do it? Don’t know. Is it possible? Absolutely. Nobody here though SF would sweep the Rockies, either.
RemoW, I honestly couldn’t tell. I knew it was going to be a close play and I was just watching the ump waiting for the all when I saw the ball go sailing by. I wasn’t even looking at Prado…then afterward when they said it was Prado I was like WTF was Roachy? In any case, I don’t think the guy woulda been out even if Prado had caught the ball, the runner was ON him when Chipper made the throw.
Does Pendleton actually get paid for what he “does”? Seems like the only thing he is actually trying to accomplish is to develop a bigger gut than Cox. A “hitting coach” should be working to improve “hitting”. Ergo, he SUCKS at his job.
How many of these vents were written by the denizens?
Hampton hurt again? Maybe the Astros should give Cash for Clunkers a call.
For sale: One Louisville Slugger bat, rarely used, no scuff marks. Contact Greg Norton.
Greg Norton at the plate to pinch hit with 2 out in the ninth. Talk about putting the “less” in hopeless.
Norton whiffs again. This has become a serial comedy.
What do Greg Norton and my grandmother have in common? They’re both old, and they don’t work much any more. But at least Granny can still make contact.
Some batters are home run or nothing. Norton is walk or nothing.
Do the math for the next series between those two though.
That 3 games series does odd things to the total.
Let’s just say the Braves are 3.5 back when SF plays Colorado….
One team goes 2-1 (Braves go 3-0 in their series) Braves are 2.5 games back, and 1.5 games back
Other team goes 2-1 (Braves go 3-0 in their series) Braves are 2.5 games back, and 1.5 games back
One team sweeps (Braves go 3-0 in their series) Braves are 3.5 games back, and .5 game back
Other team sweeps (Braves go 3-0 in their series) Braves are 3.5 games back, and .5 game back
And all those are if the Braves sweep. More than likely the Braves go 2-1.
Let’s just say the Braves are 3.5 back when SF plays Colorado….
One team goes 2-1 (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 3.5 games back, and 2.5 games back
Other team goes 2-1 (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 3.5 games back, and 2.5 games back
One team sweeps (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 4.5 games back, and 1.5 game back
Other team sweeps (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 4.5 games back, and 1.5 game back
RHR – I don’t know if I can keep reading these vents. Some are hilarious, but some are just murderingly stupid and it gets me mad. Like “The Braves would be in first place if Hanson was called up earlier.” Yeah, okay…
I dare someone to facebook friend Lentz.
I thought about it, but figured it wouldn’t be a good idea. He’d probably fill my wall with pages of crap and I’d actually have some of my friends unfriend me.
But looking at that picture, it looks like he’s in an office. And I thought he made his living playing poker?
I know a lot of you are mad about Norton. Norton’s a “great” pinch hitter and I know he’ll turn it around soon, we just have to be “patient”. I love Norton and he is a valuable asset off the bench because he’s a switch hitter.
DO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN, IDIOT HOMERS?
You have to honestly think, what is going on inside the head of our bone-headed, idiotic manager when he puts Norton in the game? You have to play sarcastic games with yourself in order to rationalize Cox’s decision making. I thank Cox for all he’s done but it’s time for him to GO. Wren, you have shown your willingness to go against the majority. Please do it again so there is NO MORE BOBBY in 2010. Thanks.
Thus in a whole series with SF vs Colorado…you can only game 1 game on the leader, and that is if you sweep. True, it gets you closer to 2nd place in the Wild Card, but it gets the Braves, max, one game closer to the Wild Card leader, after a 3 games series, AND a Braves sweep.
That’s the logic behind “3.5 games being closer to 5 or 6″.
I know a lot of you are mad about Norton. Norton’s a “great” pinch hitter and I know he’ll turn it around soon, we just have to be “patient”.
With the inappropriate use of quotes, does anybody else think that “You all are Cox apologists” could be Lentz? And why, for that matter, is his name in quotes?
to ‘No more Bobby’…if we miss the playoffs by one game, EVERY SINGLE GREG NORTON at bat would stand out..he has def cost us atleast a game, and probably more..
Just checked BMac’s stats to see how many DP’s he’s grounded into this year. Wow…not only is he bucking for a new career-high in K’s, he also appears to be headed for a new career-high in GIDP.
He’s got 15 this year, career-high is 19. What’s annoying is that heading into August, he only had 10–1 in April, and 3 each in May, June, and July.
Needs to get creaking on his doubles without the “play”…I mean, when I said last night that a wanted a “double”, I meant one of the hit-variety, not the twin-killing…
that situation is screwy, but all your predictions are based on the assumption that the giants and rockies are still tied for first, and that the braves are still 3.5 games back. there are plenty of opportunities for both the giants AND the rockies to lose in September.
I was doing the Sunday crossword puzzle a couple weeks ago, and the clue was “Chop ____.” What’s the first thing that comes to my mind? Chop Chop (the answer was Chop Suey). I didn’t think too much of it until yesterday’s puzzle….the clue was “Loaf at work.”
so norton walks a lot, i tell you what, for the league minimum (a half mil less than what the braves pay norton) ill stand with a bat on my shoulders and walk a bunch too.. in fact, i’ll up the ante and drop down a bunt every once in a while…i haven’t swung a bat in years but i think i can leg out a bunt at least 10 times in 65 ab’s… that’s better production than they are getting out of norton.
I suppose so…it’s just weird how outfielders seem to catch a lot of “breaks” when it comes to charging errors. Infielders get charged errors on regular hits…I once saw a catcher get charged an error for missing a foul ball…
Or, ya know, maybe I’m just jealous that the Fillies’ catcher hit two doubles…
True that…I mean, that one guy on the Padres has 20-something…
I guess more what bugs me is that he’s hit into a ton lately…well, five DPs in 14 games isn’t like, a billion, but considering he had only 10 through his first 94 games, it seems like a lot.
I just miss the regular doubles…good, old fashion RBI doubles.
RHR – haha, I don’t know….haven’t gotten it yet. Sunday crosswords are huge and I usually work on them during breakfast through the week or maybe some after work. It’s four letters…I’ll keep you updated.
Isn’t everyone at least a little happy that we’re playing important games heading into September????
Compared to what we’ve seen the past 3 years…(no I’m not happy with mediocrity) but I’m still excited to watch Atlanta Braves baseball while we get ready to turn the calender.
McFann Ô (August 31st, 2009 2:07 pm): “Just checked BMac’s stats to see how many DP’s he’s grounded into this year. Wow…not only is he bucking for a new career-high in K’s, he also appears to be headed for a new career-high in GIDP.”
No sweat, kid.
You know who are the top six in the ML record book for hitting into the most career double plays?
Cal Ripken (Jr), Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski, Dave Winfield, Eddie Murray and Jim Rice.
The remaining schedule seems to favor the Rockies and Braves. Both teams have 22 games remaining against teams under .500. The schedule does not seem to favor the Giants who have the most difficult remaining schedule with 16 games against teams over .500. I still say the Rockies pull it out. The Braves have not demonstrated that they have the ability recently to win important games or to beat up on teams under .500. The break down of the schedule is below.
The Rockies have 9 games remaining against teams over .500 and 22 against teams under .500.
The Giants have 16 games remaining against teams over .500 and 15 against teams under .500.
The Braves have 10 games remaining against teams over .500 and 22 games against teams under .500.
Why don’t you go and kiss Cox since you always seem to defend him? I know a place in Midtown, maybe you should go there to be around your kind, MEN. “HOMO”.
McFann- It’s not extraorinarily rare to see a catcher charged with an E on a missed foul pop. I score for a minor league team in Florida and this year I credited a batter with a Sac fly to the pitcher. Never seen it before that night.
The batter hit a foull pop by the 1st base dugout. P, C, and 1B chase after the ball. The pitcher reaches over the railing to catch it. The 3rd baseman forgets to cover home and the runner on 3rd scores.

How many times have you heard that statement about our upcoming series? Seems like every new series we say that.

Other team goes 2-1 (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 3.5 games back, and 2.5 games back
One team sweeps (Braves go 2-1 in their series) Braves are 4.5 games back, and 1.5 game back

HEY GUYS,
I know a lot of you are mad about Norton.

I suppose so…it’s just weird how outfielders seem to catch a lot of “breaks” when it comes to charging errors. Infielders get charged errors on regular hits…I once saw a catcher get charged an error for missing a foul ball…
