If we cut someone from the 25/40 man roster, it should be Greg Norton. If we need an automatic out in a crucial spot he would be the guy, but I think we can do better.

Steve McP, I don’t think Frenchy made any improvements. I just think it (the trade) built a fire under his azz to play well, to spite the Braves. Once that wears-off he’ll be sleepwalking again. The guy has no fire in the belly to play baseball, except for the acute fire created by the trade.

<i As for McLouth, I’m not sure his possible continue absence is as crucial. Don’t get me wrong — the Braves obviously want him back. But the way Diaz has performed in the leadoff role, it’s not as essential that they get McLouth back as it is to have LaRoche back. At least that’s how I see it.

Except for the fact that with McLouth out, we use Gorecki more that we should.

Braves shouldnt be scared of anyone. When you have the pitching the Braves have, you can beat any team. Just ask the phillies and the LAD. We could have taken care of NYY and Bosox also. Our biggest concern should be our offense, but I might suspect Cliff Lee might have something to say about that.

CONSISTENCY is our best allie…………no need for any help from anywhere, just play up to their capabilities and the rest will be October Baseball…………sorry rockies………we are ready to content………….

NORRIS

(August 30th, 2009 4:21 pm): “if they dont bring up heyward then I just dont get it. we are hurting in the outfield and have a shot at the wild card.”

Braves are hurting in CF, not the corners. Heyward is not a CF. Plus: “Heyward has been injured and not played in nearly a week. . . . it was doubtful Heyward would be called up before next season for reasons we’ve stated again and again, and aren’t going to go through one by one again here now (not on 40-man roster, future Super Two status, less than a half-season of experience above A-ball, etc etc).” (DOB)

“You cant let money get in the way here.”

As you should be able to grasp by now, money’s not the only (or main) reason.

“it is not everyday that you are in contention this late in the year.”

Well, you’re right there. It’s certainly not ANY day from, say, October thru July.

(August 30th, 2009 4:22 pm): “Gorecki needs to be sent down. he is not ready for the majors. we are ending up with back to back outs every time hits in front of the pitcher.”

Did you even watch the game last night? A single and a walk — he scored on Diaz’ HR and Prado’s single. Gorecki has all of 21 ML Plate Appearances. How can you pretend to know anything about baseball while making such snap (and dubious) judgments. In his last five Plate Appearances, he’s reached base three times.

(August 30th, 2009 4:29 pm): “Mclouth is an important part of next years team. Try talking about getting rid of lets say;
norwood, johnson, acosta, anderson, kawakami, and the list goes on and on.”

Rest easy, son — Norwood’s gone, at least. Johnson will have to prove himself over the rest of the year or the Braves may not offer arbitration. Acosta still has this year and next ST/AAA to prove himself.

But you’re flat out wrong about Kawakami and Anderson — have you been watching any Braves games since the ASG?

And I think “the list goes on” just for one more name — I think it’s “NORRIS”.

I hope Roachy can go, but if he can’t, may as well move Prado over to 1st base and give Kelly Johnson a start at 2nd base with the righty Blanton pitching for the Phillies..

On a side note, nice to see Mike Hampton waste another teams money for once instead of the Braves.. The guy should just call it a career.. Weird that a injury happened to him without having a contract for next season..

Supes………Thanks for the props with your 5:22pm posting. It took a little time to compile those stats.

Given how Francoer’s stats have rebounded with the Mets, it isnt a stretch at all that they will offer him salary arbitration. He could easily get $7-8 mil next year. Then there’s always the chance that the Mets could do something foolish like give him a big contract extension.

Chopdawg…………I compiled stats based on Francoeur’s production playing right field for the Mets……..with Diaz and Church’s numbers when they played right field since the trade.

Notice in the second half of that posting I did not include Diaz’s numbers when he has played left field….nor Church’s numbers when he played center since the trade.

So yes, it is fair to use Diaz/Church’s numbers together because both have played right for the Braves. If Francoeur was still with the Braves……NEITHER would be playing right field.

Regardless of what Francoeur has done with the Mets, he was KILLING US offensively at the plate. Plus you have to factor in what he would have cost the Braves next year if the Braves were foolish enough to offer him salary arbitration.

For resaons far too long and detailed the braves will not make a move with a position player to open a spot on the 25 Man for Hudson. it has to dow with being able to set the playoff roster the way you want.

Tomorrow’s move will involve a pitcher at least on the 25 Man active.

Either Boone Logan will be optioned to AAA or KK will goe on the DL.

Will be interesting to see what happens in regards to the 40 Man. that’s a different set of circumstances.

David O'Brien

Rotation is now Kawakami tomorrow, then Hudson, Vazquez and Lowe for rest of the Marlins games.

Kawkami will get his extra rest when they have the off day next Monday, Labor Day.

Reason for the change is this: The Braves had planned to send someone out tomorrow — they didn’t say who, but I’d guess either Gorecki or KJ — to open a spot for Hudson. They’d only have been left a position player short for one day, because McLouth was to be activated next day, along with probably another player or two, including Conrad.

But with McLouth now scheduled to have an MRI tomorrow on his hammy, and his return uncertain, along with Church’s back being an ongoing concern, and also maybe LaRoche’s hip, the Braves didn’t want to send out a position player tomorrow and have him gone for 10 days before they could bring him back, just to have Huddy back one day sooner and have Kawakami get extra rest.

KK is scrambling now to catch a 7:20 flight to Florida. Huddy was already down there (they fly starting pitcher down early, like most teams, particularly when it’s a night game on getaway day).

August 30th, 2009
6:07 pm

LaRoche was surprised at how much better his hip felt today. Still a little sore, but he said he can play. Said the treatment after game and again today did a lot.

Church is another matter. Bobby’s not confident he’ll be ready to play, and after talking to him myself, I can see why. He’s still hurting. I said does it hurt more hitting or throwing, and he said “everything now.” Said he needs a chiropractor but doesn’t have one (I’m thinking, dude, if you need a chiropractor, I’d imagine the Braves could have one here in 10 minutes if you asked….)

Bobby is hoping that McLouth’s MRI will show nothing serious and he’ll be back in 5-6 days, in the lineup. But again, they’re not confident on that front.

Bobby said they could have started Hanson on short rest, that he’d have been able to do it. But that “that wasn’t an option with Roger and me.” Bobby said, and I have to agree, why would we do that? You don’t do that with such an important piece of your future, not when Hanson’s already pitching more than he has in any season previously.

Martin,

If you send down Gorecki that leaves you with Anderson, Diaz, and Infante as “healthy” outfielders. Plus Infante would maybe have to play infield if Laroche hurts himself too. Would leave us with no bench if we sent him down. Makes sense when u think about it.

“He’s hit .260 with six homers, 22 RBI, 10 stolen bases anda .344 OBP in 56 games for the Braves, who are 28-28 in those games. In the games he hasn’t played since they got him, the Braves are 14-7. That’s not a typo — 14-7 without him.” DOB

I pointed the same thing out a couple of weeks ago, while arguing with a couple of bloggers about his “importance” to the club. I like the way Nate plays ball, and I think he brings some enthusiasm to the park that some others don’t appear to (or at least show it emotionally). But the results don’t lie.

Whether that means the Braves are better off without him or not, is debatable, I suppose. But the W-L record is there to discuss.

David O’Brien……..as much criticism as I have laid on Kelly Johnson, at least dude can put on a glove and run the bases. Greg Norton cant do jack, other than draw a walk when the opposing pitch loses his mind.

Being a nice guy who has had to deal with adversity does not mean that fans of a team have to endure watching someone play on our team who is clearly over matched at the plate.

If the Braves are fortunate enough to make the play-offs, do any of you really want to see Greg Norton come to the plate.

Or better yet, let’s say that another “Francisco Cabrera moment” were to pop up for the Braves? Who wants to see Greg Norton coming to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs, Braves behind by 1 run?
