chopdawg…we would not be better off with francoeur…he was unable to make adjustments for going on two full seasons..he was an automatic out….i’ll take diaz/church any day
August 30th, 20095:31 pm
If we cut someone from the 25/40 man roster, it should be Greg Norton. If we need an automatic out in a crucial spot he would be the guy, but I think we can do better.
August 30th, 20095:32 pm
Steve McP, I don’t think Frenchy made any improvements. I just think it (the trade) built a fire under his azz to play well, to spite the Braves. Once that wears-off he’ll be sleepwalking again. The guy has no fire in the belly to play baseball, except for the acute fire created by the trade.
August 30th, 20095:33 pm
Let’s hope for NO K’s from your mann!
<i As for McLouth, I’m not sure his possible continue absence is as crucial. Don’t get me wrong — the Braves obviously want him back. But the way Diaz has performed in the leadoff role, it’s not as essential that they get McLouth back as it is to have LaRoche back. At least that’s how I see it.
Except for the fact that with McLouth out, we use Gorecki more that we should.
August 30th, 20095:35 pm
looks like no chance to gain on the rockies tonight…oh well we can still gain on the division and the giants.
August 30th, 20095:36 pm
Braves shouldnt be scared of anyone. When you have the pitching the Braves have, you can beat any team. Just ask the phillies and the LAD. We could have taken care of NYY and Bosox also. Our biggest concern should be our offense, but I might suspect Cliff Lee might have something to say about that.
CONSISTENCY is our best allie…………no need for any help from anywhere, just play up to their capabilities and the rest will be October Baseball…………sorry rockies………we are ready to content………….
August 30th, 20095:37 pm
i agree 100%
If I see a freaking ball near the strike zone for Howard, I will have a seizure.
August 30th, 20095:38 pm
I though Piniella too.
Boog and Joe brought up something last night, concerning Derek Lowe’s heavy sweating. DOB, do you know anything about him changing jerseys during the course of a game? He is drenched a couple of innings into the game.
August 30th, 20095:39 pm
(August 30th, 2009 4:21 pm): “if they dont bring up heyward then I just dont get it. we are hurting in the outfield and have a shot at the wild card.”
Braves are hurting in CF, not the corners. Heyward is not a CF. Plus: “Heyward has been injured and not played in nearly a week. . . . it was doubtful Heyward would be called up before next season for reasons we’ve stated again and again, and aren’t going to go through one by one again here now (not on 40-man roster, future Super Two status, less than a half-season of experience above A-ball, etc etc).” (DOB)
“You cant let money get in the way here.”
As you should be able to grasp by now, money’s not the only (or main) reason.
“it is not everyday that you are in contention this late in the year.”
Well, you’re right there. It’s certainly not ANY day from, say, October thru July.
(August 30th, 2009 4:22 pm): “Gorecki needs to be sent down. he is not ready for the majors. we are ending up with back to back outs every time hits in front of the pitcher.”
Did you even watch the game last night? A single and a walk — he scored on Diaz’ HR and Prado’s single. Gorecki has all of 21 ML Plate Appearances. How can you pretend to know anything about baseball while making such snap (and dubious) judgments. In his last five Plate Appearances, he’s reached base three times.
(August 30th, 2009 4:29 pm): “Mclouth is an important part of next years team. Try talking about getting rid of lets say;
norwood, johnson, acosta, anderson, kawakami, and the list goes on and on.”
Rest easy, son — Norwood’s gone, at least. Johnson will have to prove himself over the rest of the year or the Braves may not offer arbitration. Acosta still has this year and next ST/AAA to prove himself.
But you’re flat out wrong about Kawakami and Anderson — have you been watching any Braves games since the ASG?
And I think “the list goes on” just for one more name — I think it’s “NORRIS”.
Matt Cain has not won since July the 24th……….ouch, and he aint winning today either.
August 30th, 20095:41 pm
I hope Roachy can go, but if he can’t, may as well move Prado over to 1st base and give Kelly Johnson a start at 2nd base with the righty Blanton pitching for the Phillies..
On a side note, nice to see Mike Hampton waste another teams money for once instead of the Braves.. The guy should just call it a career.. Weird that a injury happened to him without having a contract for next season..
August 30th, 20095:45 pm
Supes………Thanks for the props with your 5:22pm posting. It took a little time to compile those stats.
Given how Francoer’s stats have rebounded with the Mets, it isnt a stretch at all that they will offer him salary arbitration. He could easily get $7-8 mil next year. Then there’s always the chance that the Mets could do something foolish like give him a big contract extension.
August 30th, 20095:46 pm
Giants making a coming back. Rockies 4 Giants 2. Bottom 6th Giants have guys on 2nd and 3rd no outs. Come on baby!!
August 30th, 20095:49 pm
Chopdawg…………I compiled stats based on Francoeur’s production playing right field for the Mets……..with Diaz and Church’s numbers when they played right field since the trade.
Notice in the second half of that posting I did not include Diaz’s numbers when he has played left field….nor Church’s numbers when he played center since the trade.
So yes, it is fair to use Diaz/Church’s numbers together because both have played right for the Braves. If Francoeur was still with the Braves……NEITHER would be playing right field.
Regardless of what Francoeur has done with the Mets, he was KILLING US offensively at the plate. Plus you have to factor in what he would have cost the Braves next year if the Braves were foolish enough to offer him salary arbitration.
I’ve been very critical of Mike Hampton in the past ( some may recall my ”Vagina Chronicles” postings among others). I want to take a minute to thank him on this forum for a change.
Mike, thank you, thank you so much for rejecting Wren’s offer to wreck yet another Braves season.
August 30th, 20095:52 pm
Baseball… been berra berra good… to me.
With Francouer, the title of this blog sure would be a different title. Because we would not have given Matt Diaz the oppourtunity to get this hot.
Brian the Brain
Tonight is one of those nights I wish the firejoemorgan.com blog was still running.
August 30th, 20095:54 pm
Kawakami is going tomorrow instead of Hudson, because of the McLouth situation.
August 30th, 20095:55 pm
As ar as Howards strike zone. Id be happy if a reliever beans howard tonight. But seriously, Just walk the guy, his 3 run jacks are killing the Braves lately!
August 30th, 20095:57 pm
For resaons far too long and detailed the braves will not make a move with a position player to open a spot on the 25 Man for Hudson. it has to dow with being able to set the playoff roster the way you want.
Tomorrow’s move will involve a pitcher at least on the 25 Man active.
Either Boone Logan will be optioned to AAA or KK will goe on the DL.
Will be interesting to see what happens in regards to the 40 Man. that’s a different set of circumstances.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOB I want Hudson. Gosh darn that sucks…….Giants just got majorly screwed on a strike three. They had guys 2nd and 3rd and didn’t score.
August 30th, 20095:58 pm
Giants wasted away a 2nd and 3rd opportunity with 0 outs in the bottom of the 6th.
Sounds like the Braves on too many occasions.
well u wrong david huh?
August 30th, 20095:59 pm
Yes If Hudson isn’t going to be activated that changes everything for a day anyway.
Giants sure blew that one
Chico Escuela – do you have any regrets about writing your great book, “Bad Things About tha Mets?” Does Ed Kranepool still hate you?
August 30th, 20096:00 pm
DOB any idea when Hudson will now get a start?
August 30th, 20096:01 pm
Rotation is now Kawakami tomorrow, then Hudson, Vazquez and Lowe for rest of the Marlins games.
Kawkami will get his extra rest when they have the off day next Monday, Labor Day.
Reason for the change is this: The Braves had planned to send someone out tomorrow — they didn’t say who, but I’d guess either Gorecki or KJ — to open a spot for Hudson. They’d only have been left a position player short for one day, because McLouth was to be activated next day, along with probably another player or two, including Conrad.
But with McLouth now scheduled to have an MRI tomorrow on his hammy, and his return uncertain, along with Church’s back being an ongoing concern, and also maybe LaRoche’s hip, the Braves didn’t want to send out a position player tomorrow and have him gone for 10 days before they could bring him back, just to have Huddy back one day sooner and have Kawakami get extra rest.
KK is scrambling now to catch a 7:20 flight to Florida. Huddy was already down there (they fly starting pitcher down early, like most teams, particularly when it’s a night game on getaway day).
August 30th, 20096:04 pm
“Kawakami is going tomorrow instead of Hudson, because of the McLouth situation”.
That is a dumb reason! I don’t get it! They were still going to demote someone…
Sucks about Hudson. I’m sure he’ll get his opportunity as soon as the rosters expand.
August 30th, 20096:05 pm
Thanks DOB very interesting. Doesn’t change much I guess, hopefully KK will be ready to go though, that kind of worries me that he finds out a day before. Who knows though.
they fly starting pitcher down early, like most teams, particularly when it’s a night game on getaway day
I didn’t know that. Poor guys, probably gets lonely there. And heaven forbid your team gets a huge walk-off win so you watch them going crazy at home plate while you sit at the end of your hotel bed with a complimentary shower cap on.
August 30th, 20096:06 pm
I’m sorry but Reid Gorecki is not a ball player in my eyes…it doesn’t hurt getting rid of him
And I think Hanson should start over Kawakami
August 30th, 20096:07 pm
LaRoche was surprised at how much better his hip felt today. Still a little sore, but he said he can play. Said the treatment after game and again today did a lot.
Church is another matter. Bobby’s not confident he’ll be ready to play, and after talking to him myself, I can see why. He’s still hurting. I said does it hurt more hitting or throwing, and he said “everything now.” Said he needs a chiropractor but doesn’t have one (I’m thinking, dude, if you need a chiropractor, I’d imagine the Braves could have one here in 10 minutes if you asked….)
Bobby is hoping that McLouth’s MRI will show nothing serious and he’ll be back in 5-6 days, in the lineup. But again, they’re not confident on that front.
Hanson should be extremely fresh for his next start then. Pitches 3 innings and now he will have extra rest on top of that.
no regrets. kranepool still no likey. Seaver not happy either, he want to keep my soap. i think he weirdo.
August 30th, 20096:08 pm
haha, nice little stat from ESPN
Paul Byrd is 8-11 when facing teams with a bird nickname.
August 30th, 20096:09 pm
Bobby said they could have started Hanson on short rest, that he’d have been able to do it. But that “that wasn’t an option with Roger and me.” Bobby said, and I have to agree, why would we do that? You don’t do that with such an important piece of your future, not when Hanson’s already pitching more than he has in any season previously.
If you send down Gorecki that leaves you with Anderson, Diaz, and Infante as “healthy” outfielders. Plus Infante would maybe have to play infield if Laroche hurts himself too. Would leave us with no bench if we sent him down. Makes sense when u think about it.
jeffrey d – Still better to have them there rested and lonely then wore out and tired from traveling all night on days they have to pitch.
August 30th, 20096:11 pm
“LaRoche was surprised at how much better his hip felt today. Still a little sore, but he said he can play. Said the treatment after game and again today did a lot”.
And I bet bobby still doesnt let him play…he always does this, does he see we are in the middle of a race? you have to play this game until you bleed to death if you care at all!!! if he feels better, let him play! im sorry but bobby cox can be such a p***y sometimes!
August 30th, 20096:12 pm
Rox score again…I really don’t see this Giants offense scoring 3 runs.
August 30th, 20096:13 pm
Obviously you missed that the line ups are already posted – Roachy is playing
we have kelly johnson!!! david ross…either oif them can play infield and KJ can play the outfield!
“He’s hit .260 with six homers, 22 RBI, 10 stolen bases anda .344 OBP in 56 games for the Braves, who are 28-28 in those games. In the games he hasn’t played since they got him, the Braves are 14-7. That’s not a typo — 14-7 without him.” DOB
I pointed the same thing out a couple of weeks ago, while arguing with a couple of bloggers about his “importance” to the club. I like the way Nate plays ball, and I think he brings some enthusiasm to the park that some others don’t appear to (or at least show it emotionally). But the results don’t lie.
Whether that means the Braves are better off without him or not, is debatable, I suppose. But the W-L record is there to discuss.
August 30th, 20096:14 pm
According to the lineup DOB posted earlier, LaRoche is playing. Relax.
August 30th, 20096:15 pm
where, exactly, would you let your back up catcher play in the infield?
Sorry cab, didn’t see your response to Martin before I posted.
Martin – Umm NO
Martin – so Bobby’s stupid by playing it safe with injuries? I guess he sees that it’s better to have a month of Adam LaRoche than about 3 innings of Adam LaRoche before he hurts himself.
If you’re going to call Bobby stupid (I think he is, btw) at least come up with a good reason.
August 30th, 20096:16 pm
SF has 2 on with 0 outs
August 30th, 20096:17 pm
no worries…Nice to know I’m not the only one that noticed
cabravesfan – the old head-wall thing not good since you haven’t started drinking yet…
August 30th, 20096:18 pm
sometimes it is just necessary…nothing else you can do (is 3:00 to early to start drinking?)
yall are crazy
August 30th, 20096:19 pm
DAMN!!!! Looks like Bobby found yet another excuse to keep Norton on the team.
is 3:00 to early to start drinking?
It’s about 6:30, our time, so I say go for it.
August 30th, 20096:20 pm
As you might remember, I was ready at noon my time today…
August 30th, 20096:22 pm
I like your thinking…
yeah- that was a bit early..especially since I had not gotten up yet
August 30th, 20096:23 pm

August 30th, 20096:28 pm
Hanley Ramirez has 45 hits in 24 games since Aug. 5. Damn. (Just doing my preview box for Marlins series.)
Mid Town Joe
August 30th, 20096:29 pm
DOB – to answer your previous blog question – Maybe.
August 30th, 20096:30 pm
GiAINTS TOOK THE LEAD GRAND SLAM!!!!
GRAND SLAM BY our old buddy Edgar Rentiera. 6-5 Giants, bottom of the 7th.

August 30th, 20096:32 pm
Renteria Grand Slam! Giants lead Rockies! 6-5
DOB, tell the Braves to fly in Dr. Scott Ackerman out of Gwinnett County. He is the BOMB of chiros.
Congrats to the CA kids for winning the LLWS, but I thought they lacked class by pulling their shirts out of their pants as soon as the game was over, and un-buttoning them.
August 30th, 20096:33 pm
August 30th, 2009
DOB, tell the Braves to fly in Dr. Scott Ackerman out of Gwinnett County. He is the BOMB of chiros.
Chico say si.
Edgar, still helping out the Braves….
Bring up Conrad
Renteria just hit a slam in 7th for Giants!
August 30th, 20096:35 pm
If we don’t lay an egg tonight. 2.5 games out of first maybe? After losing 2 of 3 to the Padres and looking like we were done for……I love this game.
August 30th, 20096:36 pm
Wow, Tiger Woods. Ask and you shall receive.
August 30th, 2009
Giants bases loaded 1 out. One time hit a grand slam…please!
August 30th, 20096:37 pm
Edgar’s the man today
August 30th, 20096:38 pm
Chico, do you use Dr. Ackerman?
Has anyone seen Carroll’s column on aging sports stars. Great stuff! I never thought of the chemical addiction to endorphins and big plays, as a factor before!
August 30th, 20096:39 pm
my freend does. sez he da best chiro. chico too old, chiro may break chico
August 30th, 20096:40 pm
Good call, Tiger.
August 30th, 20096:41 pm
I think the Braves would be nuts if they don’t find a spot for Matt Diaz next year.
August 30th, 20096:42 pm
I adore Dr. Ackerman, Chico. See him Tuesday after work. Feel so much better after that
August 30th, 20096:44 pm
David O’Brien……..as much criticism as I have laid on Kelly Johnson, at least dude can put on a glove and run the bases. Greg Norton cant do jack, other than draw a walk when the opposing pitch loses his mind.
Being a nice guy who has had to deal with adversity does not mean that fans of a team have to endure watching someone play on our team who is clearly over matched at the plate.
If the Braves are fortunate enough to make the play-offs, do any of you really want to see Greg Norton come to the plate.
Or better yet, let’s say that another “Francisco Cabrera moment” were to pop up for the Braves? Who wants to see Greg Norton coming to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs, Braves behind by 1 run?
August 30th, 20096:45 pm
Thanks guys. Now all I’m asking for is a Braves win. Chop Chop!!
Forget what I said about SF not being able to score 3 runs. I guess we can’t all be right 99% of the time.
Wait, so does this mean Hudson won’t come off the DL until Tuesday? If so DOB , doesn’t that mean he wouldn’t be eligible for the postseason roster?
