Did you guys want Mac to bunt before he hit into the double play? I wasn’t paying attention to the blog then.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I did, this is the 2nd time this season I have called for this call and Cox keeps making it his way. I also called once when chipper was on a similar situation. Sometimes you just have to take what the other team is giving you and forget about whos in the batters box.

After Mc bunts, you have 2 RISP and 3 very good RBI guys back to back to back (in case an IW was to be strategy for the phillies).

Infante doesn’t cover ground in center the same way Reid does, they tried Infante in center it wasn’t pretty, people howled about that. So take your pick better bat or more fielding speed.

Doc Holliday: How many teams ask their cleanup hitter to bunt in that situation? Mac scorched it, just right at someone….

Note to self (and others):

No team can suffer like the Braves. No worse fate can befall any other team than the Braves. It is pointless to assert otherwise. If it’s bad and it happens to the Braves, it is undeniably the worst thing to ever take place to a baseball team.

Seriously though, how creative can you get with this team? Sounds like some of you guys think bobby cox is working with another lineup. Got one of your best hitters up in a band box trailing late on the road and you want a bunt?

I love Chipper’s comment about certain games being one’s they would have lost last year or the year before.

Oddly, I think this was a game the Braves would have won last year. After all, some might remember the game in which JJ threw 8 scoreless innings in Philly last July but had only a one run lead on a Brian McCann homerun. The Phillies bullpen came in in the 9th and we scored seven runs, four of them on a previously mentioned McCann grand slam off Lidge.

I really thought we’d have a similar fate tonight.

I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that in spite of a few injuries we’re still somewhat alive in the wild card race.

Of course, the day after the Jurrjens game last year we blew a six run lead, Brian got a concussion on a play at the plate and the season was pretty much over.

Could be worse, but we’re still good enough to beat the Phillies. That shouldn’t happen.

God knows what’s going to happen in Florida.

“Would Cox have ever asked Fred McGriff to bunt?… Would Cox have ever asked Andres Galarraga to bunt?…. You get the point.”

No. Because back them, Bobby played for the 3-run HR. Not to mention that those lineups were DEEP with power. Usually the 5, 6 and 7th place hitters had more power than we’ve gotten out of Chipper and Mac this year. So if the Cat and Dog didn’t do it, it was likely that somebody behind them would have done it.

Different teams. Different lineup. Different situation. Not one has anything to do with the other.

Cox also wouldn’t have had Javy Lopez batting cleanup either (129 total career ab’s in the 4-hole), and Javy had more power than Mac does, (28 HR per 162 game average for Javy vs. 24 per 162 game average for Mac).

So you see. The lineup is just different. Thus what is asked of them should be different too.

That all being said, I wouldn’t have bunted with Mac in that situation. LOL

But with how he had been hitting and considering the rest of the lineup, I understand why some would want Bobby to play for one run.

As someone pointed out, Mcs numbers are not numbers of a cleanup hitter, not even in AAA. Second of all, Mc is not our best power hitter……….. LaR is much better. 3rd of all, Mc was chosen as our cleanup hitter because we had no other option, but since Cox is our manager, he still is. 4th, if any other manager in the world came up and managed the braves, LaR would have become our cleanup hitter about 3 weeks ago.

Please, dont ever try to compare Mc to McGriff and Gallarraga again. Mc is a great hitter, but he is not the slugger those 2 guys were.

At last but not least…………if your cleanup hitter is not having a good year and not putting cleanup hitter type numbers, as a manager, you just ask whatever you want out of him……….thats why you are the boss………but it seems in atlanta, players are the bosses.

Though the power has come on a bit lately, with our pitching, if I’m Cox, I play for 1 run at a time wherever I get a chance. This team (and most teams) has done extremely well when scoring 4 or more runs (60-14), and 8-47 when scoring 3 or less (1-11 when scoring EXACTLY 3 runs – weird).

So to me, the goal should be to get to 4 runs or higher. Seems simple. But just gotta scratch and claw and try and make it happen anyway possible. It’s the magic number.

Our pitching is REALLY good. The odds are in our favor, when scoring 4 or more.

That’s the little things that Bobby could do. If we’ve got 3 runs, go out of the way to get to 4, rather than sitting back and waiting for the action to happen.

What does being an ALL STAR has to do with bunting a ball? Its the other way around……….Thats how an ALL STAR player shows he is an AS player, by doing what is needed to be done………please name me any catcher in the league (besides mauer) that would have not bunt that ball?

Bunting was a must do………..we didnt and as result, we lost. I can guarantee you that if Mc bunted that ball, we would have tied that game….. you know that. So it all goes down to the fact that it worked against us to have Mc in the batters box at the wrong time.

If he is sooooooooo damn good and as the slugger he is, why couldnt he hit a sac fly to RF and advance the runner to 3B? That would have worked as good as a bunt.
