Tonight’s loss to Philly finished us in the NL East race. Philly will be the NL East champs for the third year in a row.

As for the wild card, we are still alive, but, if we dont pick it up, we will be gone there as well. While one logically cant rake us over the coals for losing two of three to the division leaders in their ballpark, those losses to the woeful Padres earlier this week really, really hurt.

It doesnt get any easier, going to Florida for four games. Hopefully Huddy coming back will help. Reality is, though, unless we start playing better, our chances even for the wild card will fade away just like the hopes for the NL East did.

“Chipper has a bad month and now his career is over???” njbraves

Nope. By the standard he has set and the bar he has raised for himself (signing the extension was his way of stating that he can and will match what he’s done in the past), he has had 4 “bad months”.

His power is down (HR wise), and due to nobody being on base ahead of him, his RBI are down. So the question has to be asked? Why not bat him somewhere else in the lineup? Why not move the 1-2 hitters around so he has more opportunity to knock in runs? Or how about move Chipper into the 2-hole and let somebody else drive HIM in, since he’s walking a fair amount still, leading to a decent OBP?

It’s decisions like this that cause people to rag on Bobby for being too loyal.

Been saying it for weeks. There is still plenty room for Chipper on this team. But until he is NOT the focal point of the offense (or he gets back to being the guy that they gave the extension to), we will struggle to be consistent offensively.

Here’s story with quotes, unedited:

By David O’Brien
dobrien@ajc.com

Philadelphia – One rough defensive inning sunk the Braves on Sunday night, and their hopes of gaining another game in the playoff chase before leaving Philadelphia.

The Phillies broke a tie with two runs in the seventh inning and held on for a 3-2 win at Citizens Bank Park, clinching a second series win against the Braves in barely two weeks.

“One thing about playing the Phillies is, you can’t make mistakes,” said third baseman Chipper Jones, whose throwing error on a bunt led to an unearned run in the seventh. “We made a couple of mistakes, and it ended up burning us.”

The loss dropped the Braves back into a third-place tie with the Marlins in the wild-card race, 3-1/2 games behind co-leader Colorado and San Francisco. They open a four-game series against the Marlins tonight in Florida.

The Braves and Marlins are also tied for second place in the National League East, albeit a full eight games behind Philadelphia.

“You’re rolling along and something crazy like that happens and costs you the game. Braves starter Jair Jurrjens (10-9) said of the seventh inning. “If we win, we get close to the wild card [lead]. It sucks. But there’s a lot of games to go. We’ve just got to keep playing hard and trying to win series.”

Jurrjens walked Raul Ibanez to start the seventh, before Jones fielded a surprise drag bunt by Pedro Feliz. Jones bare-handed the ball and threw a little wide to Martin Prado covering first.

Prado looked reluctant to reach further into the path of Feliz barreling toward the base. The throw went past his glove and put runners at second and third.

“I wasn’t playing in [expecting bunt],” Jones said. “It’s just a do-or-die play, and I was making a throw to a guy [Prado] on the run. I thought I made a good throw. I guess I didn’t. I guess it tailed a little too much.

“The play didn’t get made, and it ended up costing us two runs and the game.”

Carlos Ruiz following by hitting a double that popped out of left fielder Garret Anderson’s glove after he raced to the warning track. It would have been an fine catch if he’d held on. He did not, and the Braves trailed 3-1.

“He pitched a great game again in this ballpark,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said of Jurrjens, who gave up three runs (two earned) and seven hits in seven innings. “That inning just got crazy. Ibanez walked … and we threw the ball away.”

Jurrjens surrendered a Chase Utley homer in the fourth, but had worked out of all other trouble until the seventh, when he walked Ibanez to start the inning.

He had wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fifth after walking Ibanez to start that inning.

The Braves had one more prime scoring opportunity in the eighth against reliever Ryan Madson, after Matt Diaz was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Prado, whose first-inning homer had staked the Braves to a 1-0 lead, singled to move Diaz to second, and Jones singled to drive him in and cut the lead to 3-2.

Brian McCann then hit a liner to second baseman Utley to start a double play.

Many in the sellout crowd were still finding their seats when Prado homered with one out in the first, a moon shot that landed in the left-field seats. It was his second homer in seven career at-bats against Joe Blanton.

The Braves had a chance to do more damage in the first after walks by Jones and Anderson, before Yunel Escobar grounded out to end the inning.

They also stranded two in the fourth when rookie Reid Gorecki took a called strike to end the inning.

The Phillies had only one baserunner through three innings against Jurrjens, who was 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA and no homers allowed in three starts at the cozy ballpark before Sunday.

TnBrian I realize just as much as anyone here that Chipper isn’t getting it done and Mac is not the ideal clean-up guy, but I also realize that we went into that Philly series just like the last one a little shorthanded. Add to that the rain managed to knock out Tommy Hanson and everyone knows that starting pitching is our strength. Not one of those games were the phillies without Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino, Werth, Ibanez or any of their regulars. Mac being a cather and having struggles right now isn’t that surprising. He’s a good player, I just think he’s counted on to do to much. Jimmy Rollins struggles and the phillies can sit him. Can’t afford to do that with Chipper because of the other injuries. They would have the better offense regardless if we had all our guys but since we didn’t it shows how much behind the eightball we had been these last two series offensively speaking. Phillies are a good team, its hard to beat them with the full compliment.

Heres that question again…………..why didnt McCann bunt in the 8th?

When did McCann become Bunt Master-B? He has THREE sacrifices since 2006. Plus, regardless of whether or not you think he’s a cleanup hitter, he’s not a player you ask to bunt.

He hit the ball hard. Just right at Rollins. It happens.

What I don’t understand is…

Why is Bobby starting Reid Gorecki over Omar Infante in CF? Gorecki, a rookie, has proven to be overmatched against major league pitching, and he’s failed — specifically by striking out — in key moments of games several times, i.e. when we have runners on first and second with only one out. Infante, on the other hand, is a veteran hitter, has good career numbers against Joe Blanton (2-for-6 with 1 double) and Cliff Lee (8-for-21, .381, with a 2B and 3B, though the Lee numbers don’t matter much). He’s also struck out only 15 times this year, so he at least puts the bat on the ball.

I that Cox has the tendency to throw the rookies into the fire and let them show what they have, and who knows if Infante would’ve done any better than Gorecki did tonight, but it seems like Infante would’ve been the smarter choice to start in CF….for what it’s worth.

If McCann is asked to bunt, what guarantee do you have he lays one down? Two bunts fouled off and the guy is in the hole 0-2. When do you see a “cleanup hitter” bunt? You don’t ask people to do things they are not accustomed to in the new baseball climate. Not like the old days where even Mickey Mantle knew how to bunt (according to Joe Morgan).

Mitchell,

The stiffs on ESPN even mentioned the game Lidge blew against us a few weeks ago. You don’t pay enough attention. You’re not obsessing enough on the details, dude. You need to step your game up.

That’s why I didn’t mention it. He made an error. Utley made a horrible play before it to allow Anderson to get on base.

In every conventional save situation against the Braves, Lidge has converted.

He was perfect last year as we all know but in almost every save opportunity against him, we were one hit away from giving him a blown save. Even the “Kelly Johnson game”, they had a two run lead in the tenth and Yunel got a hit with runners on but Victorino threw out Blanco at the plate to end it. It doesn’t get any closer than that.

It’s one thing to have missed opportunities against him when he’s pitching well but then he starts having a bad year and his blown save against us comes on an error.

He did give up a grand slam to Brian last year in the 9th inning but we were already ahead at that point.

It’s just indicative of the Braves inability to get clutch hits and score runs late in games. Good teams do it. The Braves don’t.

Well, i wasn’t just talking about this year. They wasted a Cy Young year by Lincecum last year plus a good year by Cain. Lincecum and Cain are doing it again this year with sub 3.00 ERA’s at 2.33 and 2.39 and Zito has been great for them in the second half, don’t know the exact numbers but the guy has been solid as of late. I think they definatly have a beef.

Gamecock Brave: DaddyD’z and Wyatt’s (both on Memorial Dr. in Atlanta) are better, in my opinion, than Fox Bros., although it (Fox Bros.) is quite good, too. Daddy D’z is the best in Atlanta, for me. I also like Pig-N-Chik and Fat Matt’s, though not as much as those others. And I know there’s a place north of the perimeter that’s supposed to be outstanding, but I don’t get up there.

Everything I read about Hudson not starting tomorrow gives me an uneasy feeling about how KK will pitch. Sounds like he’s rushing around, didn’t expect to start, and might not be in form to pitch a good game.

Maybe it’ll turn out good, but on paper it sounds like a short outing in the making

“OK, here’s an amazing stat. I can’t eleven starts in which Jurrjens has pitched six innings or more while allowing two earned runs or fewer … and not gotten a win. ELEVEN!” DOB

Yet many will still argue that all the pitching is more important than the lack of hitting. This is a PRIME example of what I’m talking about.

KK has gotten no run support, Vazquez’s record isn’t a true representation of his dominance on the mound, and JJJ can’t buy a win.

I stand by my point. One less pitcher, and one big bat, and the overall team record improves. Even if whoever the pitcher is that mans the 5th spot in the rotation is horrible.

So here’s Wren’s dilema this winter, provided payroll doesn’t drastically improve, and free agents aren’t lining up to sign with Atlanta (meaning, that I assume Wren will need to make some trades)…

Lowe isn’t going anywhere. Nobody wants 3 more years of that contract. And even if somebody did, it would hinder Wren in luring future free agents.

KK would actually be attractive to many teams out there at his price. But if Wren trades him after one year, you can kiss any future Japanese players choosing Atlanta. But at his price, he should be retained. Low risk, with the possibility of high reward.

JJJ, he would bring quite a bit in a trade. Young. Dominant. Inexpensive (for now). All the same reasons that a team with limited salary should keep him.

Tommy Hanson (yeah, right).

Tim Hudson? High priced (but reasonable if he is healthy), and coming off of major surgery. Not going to get much in return. Might get somebody to risk it if he looks really good in September. But I doubt it.

Which brings us to Vazquez. Essentially, he and Hudson are in the same boat contract wise. Around 11-12 million and will be entering the last year of their contract.

One guy is having a Cy Young like season (without the wins), and the other is about to make his season debut in September. One is a lifetime .500 or so pitcher who was publicly called out by his last manager as not being a “big game” pitcher. The other has a stellar winning percentage when given 3 runs of support or more and has plenty of playoff experience.

I think if one of Hudson and Vazquez is to be kept, it will be Hudson based on trade value. But here’s the thing. What if Wren was to trade BOTH of them?

Hudson is not yet a 10/5 guy on this contract. 2010 will be year 5 of him being with the Braves. So thank JS that he didn’t give out no-trade clauses.

A rotation of Hanson, JJJ, KK and Lowe, with somebody else manning the 5-hole (Medlen, other trades or free agent pickups – preferably a lefty), and the salary freedom to add a BIG bat via trade, (which would allow them to take their time with Heyward), wouldn’t be that bad.

Would mean not much depth in the rotation. But who knows?

If I’m Wren, I think about trading both of them. If Bobby really believes that JJJ and Hanson are “ace” material, with KK and Lowe manning the 3 and 4 spots, the top of the rotation is pretty solid if not great. Why not?

Of course if payroll is allowed to rise, then keep one of Hudson and Vazquez and trade the other for a stop gap bat.

Thoughts?

Blobby Clux is quite a magician. He can take one of the best starting rotations and one of the best hitting lineups and turn them into losers. Yo,DOB,how ’bout we call up a manager in September and send one down. Way down. About 6 feet down.

Doc, if they would’ve flashed McCann the bunt sign, they would’ve needed a defibrulator for Brian.
