Could Hanson be Rookie of the Year?

The Braves haven’t been able to gain a lot of ground in the wild-card race or the National League East standings, but Tommy Hanson has gained steadily on the leaders for NL Rookie of the Year.
Unlike, say, my luggage, which has not gained steadily on me. Yes, it’s still lost. Delta somehow misplaced a bag on a direct flight from Atlanta to Philadelphia, even though I checked in some 80 minutes before my flight this morning. Stunning. Really.
Anyway, Hanson: The Braves’ lanky redhead enters tonight’s important start against the Phillies — as if all games aren’t important for the Braves at this point — with a 9-2 record and 3.19 ERA, and a win would give him a better record than Phillies ace J.A. Happ (10-3), whom many observers consider the ROY favorite.
Happ has a significantly better ERA (2.63), and has made four more starts than Hanson (14), in addition to 12 relief appearances in April and May before moving to the rotation.
Happ has pitched in 30 games and has an 8-3 record and 2.66 ERA in 14 starts, and a 2-0 record and 2.49 ERA in 12 relief appearances.
Hanson will make his 15th start tonight (Friday) on his 23rd birthday, and is on a four-game winning streak, already the second time he’s won four consecutive starts in his brief major league career, which didn’t begin until he was called up from Triple-A in the first week of June.
 • Hanson has 69 strikeouts and 32 walks in 86-2/3 innings, with a .239 opponents’ average and eight homers allowed.
 • Happ, as a starter, has 80 strikeouts and 42 walks in 122 innings, with a .234 opponents’ average and 14 homers allowed.
With his relief stats included (and they are included, of course, by voters), he has 97 strikeouts and 51 walks in 143-2/3 innings, with an impressive .226 overall opponents’ average.
Considering the Phillies are likely to win the division, and Happ has been their best starter for most of the season, you’d have to think he’d get more votes than Hanson if the balloting were today.
But it’s not today. Ballots aren’t due until after the final regular-season games, and if Hanson can reel off a few more wins and finish with a better record than Happ, and whittle that ERA down a little closer to Happ’s, then I think the Braves righty has got a real chance to win Rookie of the Year.
But so do a few other guys.
No, it’s not a given that either Hanson or Happ will win it. Far from it.
There’s also Cubs pitcher Randy Wells, who 9-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 20 starts, though I think his loss total and the Cubs’ slide will drop him below Hanson and Happ.
But then there’s two real possibilities among rookie outfielders: Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen and Colorado’s Dexter Fowler.

McCutchen is real fast, real good

McCutchen is real fast, real good

(If any of you are wondering why I haven’t mentioned San Francisco chunkster Pedro Sandoval, it’s because he’s not a rookie. His 145 at-bats in 2008 put him just over the threshold for rookie status in 2009. If he was a rookie, we wouldn’t even be having this debate, because he’d be the obvious choice with his .331 average, 37 doubles, 19 homers and 73 RBI. Fortunately for Hanson and the rest of the rookie field, Sandoval’s not eligible.)
Anyway, getting back to McCutchen and Fower. McCutchen is coming on strong, and if his team’s sorry record and all the pub that Happ and Hanson have received don’t dissuade voters for McCutchen, he should finish at least in the top three.
 • McCutchen is hitting .290 with 33 extra-base hits (six triples, nine homers), 39 RBI, a .361 OBP and 15 stolen bases in 72 games. He’s an extremely talented burner who’s made a lot of highlight plays since taking over for Nate McLouth.
He’s also hit .347 with a .462 OBP in 49 at-bats with runners in scoring position, and has seven homers and a .901 OPS in 36 games since the All-Star break. The more he plays, the better he gets.
Then there’s Fowler, who I saw play last fall in Arizona and wondered if he was going to be the fastest player in the league. He’s not, but he’s one of them (as is McCutchen).
 • Fowler has hit .270 with 27 doubles, nine triples, four homers, 33 RBI, a .372 on-base percentage and 26 stolen bases in 113 games for the surging Rockies. If voters look close, they might notice he’s hit .309 with a .410 OBP at Coors and .230 with a .330 OBP on the road, but that’s a product of his speed and the big field, not the altitude. So really, that shouldn’t be a mark against him. (I don’t think many ROY voters will even look that closely to begin with.)
Fowler’s been a big part of the Rockies’ recent success, batting .297 with a .408 OBP and 21 runs in 32 games since the All-Star break.
So there you have it. It’s still a fairly wide-open race, don’t you think? With this four-start winning streak, I think Hanson’s put himself right in the thick of the race, and if he can reel off 3-4 more wins and keep avoiding losses, he might just win the thing.
But like I said, Happ’s impact for the NL East leaders is bound to sway some votes, and right now his numbers are still better than Hanson’s.

♣ Kid vs. the Pedro: Tonight’s matchup is intriguing, with Hanson facing the wily veteran Pedro Martinez in Pedro’s fourth start for the Phillies.
Hanson is 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA in his past four starts, and the Braves have scored nearly nine runs per nine innings he’s pitched in that span, totaling six, six, nine and four runs while he was in those games.
But if anyone knows about robust run support, it’s Martinez since he came off the DL for the Phillies. He’s 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA and .286 opponents’ average in three starts (all Philly wins), and in his two wins the Phillies scored 12 and eight runs while he was in the game.
Martinez hasn’t had a quality start yet, but he did limit the Mets to seven hits and four runs in six innings his last time out, albeit with two homers at Citi Field.
Martinez went 6-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 starts against the Braves during the 2007-2008 seasons for the Mets. Yunel Escobar is 3-for-4 with a homer against him, but no other Brave has hit for a higher average against him than Brian McCann’s .238 (5-for-21 with a homer).
Chipper is 9-for-47 (.191) with three homers against him.
Of course, this isn’t quite the same Pedro that Chipper faced all those years. (Then again, until last night it hasn’t looked like quite the same Chipper lately, either.)
But Chipper almost always feasts on Philly pitching. He’s hit .372 with 11 homers, 29 RBI and an 1.242 OPS in his past 35 games against the Phillies, including .341 (14-for-41) in 11 games this season, albeit with only one homer and five RBI.

♣ Since the break: It may not seem like it, given how lackluster theys played in several games during the homestand, but the Braves are second to the Marlins with a .278 average since the break, and second to the Phillies in homers since the break.
That’s right, the team that so many on the blog bemoan for a lack of power, has hit 52 homers since the All-Star break. The Phillies (59) are the only other NL team that’s hit more than 48 since the break.
Meanwhile, the Phillies (3.12) and Braves (3.31) have the league’s best ERAs since the break, and the Cardinals (25-13), Phillies (25-14) and Rockies (25-15) are the only teams with better records than the Braves (24-15) since the break.
The Marlins (21-16) are the only other NL team that’s won more than 20.
Doesn’t help much, however, when the Phillies and Rockies are two of the teams the Braves are chasing. But two of the potential others, the Dodgers (if they fall from the NL West lead into the wild-card race) and Giants, are only 20-20 apiece since the break.

♣Still raking:  Must be Adam LaRoche, who has hit .367 with nine homers, 22 RBI and a 1.110 OPS in 31 games for three teams since July 20, and .390 with eight homers and 18 RBI in 23 games (82 at-bats) for the Braves since being traded July 31.
In his past 14 games, Ol’ Rochy has hit .420 (21-for-50) with seven homers, 14 RBI, a .508 OBP and an .860 slugging percentage.
Meanwhile, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is still blazing. He’s hit .298 with nine homers and 26 RBI in his past 14 games, including three homers and six RBI in three games vs. Atlanta.
In his past 40 against the Bravos, he’s done this unsightly damage: .311 (47-for-151) with 27 extra-base hits (16 homers) and 47 RBI, with a .387 OBP and .715 slugging percentage. Yikes.
 Yo, walk that man.

“LABELLED WITH LOVE” by Squeeze (Difford/Tilbrook)

She unscrews the top of a new whiskey bottle
And shuffles about in her candle-lit hovel
Like some kind of witch with blue fingers in mittens
She smells like the cat and the neighbours she sickens
The black and white t.v. has long seen a picture
The cross on the wall is a permanent fixture
The postman delivers the final reminders
She sells off her silver and poodles and china

Drinks to remember, I, me and myself
And winds up the clock
And knocks dust from the shelf
Home is a love that I miss very much
So the past has been bottled and labelled with love

During the war time an American pilot
Made every air raid a time of excitement
She moved to his prairie and married the Texan
She learned from a distance how love was a lesson
He became drinker and she became mother
She knew that one day she’d be one or the other
He ate himself older, drunk himself dizzy
Proud of her features, she kept herself pretty

Drinks to remember, I, me and myself
And winds up the clock
And knocks dust from the shelf
Home is a love that I miss very much
So the past has been bottled and labelled with love

He like a cowboy died drunk in his slumber
Out on the porch in the middle of summer
She crossed the ocean back home to her family
But they had retired to roads that were sandy
She moved home alone without friends or relations
Lived in a world full of age reservation
On moth-eaten armchairs she’d say that she’d sought all
The friends who had left her to drink from the bottle

Drinks to remember, I, me and myself
And winds up the clock
And knocks dust from the shelf
Home is a love that I miss very much
So the past has been bottled and labelled with love

This is my ROY take from “The Few, The Proud, The Braves.”

Randy Wells -

Randy has been just dandy for the slumping Chicago Cubs. Having a turblelent begining of the season by going from the minors to the majors, bullpen to rotation, Randy proved he is the only consistant Cubs SP that doesn’t have temper tantrums, doesn’t get injuried by the stupidest thing, and doesn’t suck. How does the Cubs repay him? By giving him no run support. Thus for the 2009 campainge, he has posted a 9 – 6 record, 2.84 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 74k’s. He should be somewhere around 12 – 3, but you don’t get a ROY award by what you should be.

J.A. Happ -

Happ also had to deal with call ups and send downs until things clicked for him. It was not as hard for Happ to get into the starting rotation than it was for Wells to. Phillies could not pitch, Happ finally could, boom. I have called Happ the “luckiest pitcher in baseball” because of his high strand rate and large amounts of run support. Happ has the most innings pitched than either of the other two. He Currently has the best winning percentage (one more win that Hanson). He has the lowest WHIP and ERA (1.17, 2.59). So why isn’t he largely considered the favorite…?

Tommy Hanson -

…Because of this man. Tommy’s stats may not be as good as Happ’s, but he has the one thing that really matters, hype. Hype is what won Soto the ROY last year, even though Jurrjens clearly deserved it. Tommy Hanson is also the reason Glavine doesn’t have a job, if your unfamilar with what I’m talking about, refer to this link. The AFL MVP award might as well be icing on the cake for Hanson. He is projected to be the #1 starter for the Braves next year. Tommy does have more than hype though, he leads both Randy and Happ in K/9, opposing batting average, and P/IP. Talk about Ace material.

Well, it was Parkview’s freshman team, but still.

Me and Francoeur graduated the same year, but I doubt he was on their freshman team. Probably played JV or Varsity even. But it’s cool to think that I possibly could’ve gotten burned by Jeff Francoeur in a live play of football.

I was good friends with our quarterback throughout college, and he’d always brag about getting sacked by David Pollack in high school.

I think to much is being put into the win last night.. The reality is that we lost 2 of 3 against a very bad team on our home turf in the midst of a potential playoff run.. It’s safe to say that we need to take at least 2 of these 3 games from the Phillies, and preferably a sweep.. I highly doubt a sweep is in order seeing as though we just lost 2 of 3 against a very bad Padre team with “homefield” advantage.. If we win 2, and the WC teams ahead of us lose, we are back in the WC race, but at this point I have lost all hope and confidence in the Braves to think they have what it takes to make the playoffs.. I guess I am just hanging on to the false hope that the Braves may have something left, but I seriously doubt it..

He’s DEFINITELY in the discussion. The big fella has only been caught stealing once. 6-4, 245 pounder with power and speed? He’s definitely in the running to win the award.

STOP FOOLING YOURSELVES,

Don’t believe the Braves will make the playoffs until they actually make it. This stupid BUSINESS LIKE approach is boring the fans, plus it didn’t work when the games really mattered or else we wouldn’t be 1 for 15 in the post-season w/ Cox. Imagine if your QB went 1-15 passing or your SG was 1 for 15 shooting. You would say they had an awful game, right? Now, Cox has done nothing to improve the Braves. All the playoff runs were due to the teams talent, not him. He NEVER outmanages anyone. Look at last year, we had no talent and we sucked. This year, the talent is good enough to make the playoffs, it’s just too bad we have an IDIOT for a manager. GEESH, hire a new manager, change uniforms, do something.

Since some here are so ready to “quit fooling themselves” and call the season a wash, I thought I’d bring up this little tidbit I saw by Ken Rosenthal.

“Yes, the Rays likely will listen to offers for Crawford this winter if preliminary contract talks yield little hope. But frankly, they would be acting more out of due diligence than an actual desire to make a deal.”

He kind of gets to the point that it’s very unlikely the Rays will trade Crawford in the offseason, simply because they feel like they have a shot to win next year. But I wonder if a package of Javy Vazquez + a prospect might be enticing for a team such as Tampa….since they are trading Scott Kazmir, there will be a hole in their rotation next year. They have a ton of talent in their minor leagues, but not any pitchers that would be able to make a seamless transition to the starting rotation (except maybe Wade Davis). And the salaries work out almost exactly even. It’s complete speculation on my part, but it would be interesting to see if Tampa would consider a Vazquez/Crawford swap in the offseason, giving Atlanta a legit leadoff hitter for the first time since Furcal left (I like McLouth, but he’s best suited driving in runs, in my opinion).

Garret Jones’s career stats:

266 AB, 36 runs, 15 2b, 17 HR, 35 RBI, .267 avg.

Jeff Francoeur’s 2005 stats (4 years ago, at age 21):

257 AB, 41 runs, 20 2b, 14 HR, 45 RBI, .300 avg.

Francoeur is now 25. Jones is 28. Are you telling me you’d trade Jurrjiens for a 28 year-old who’s CAREER stats don’t match up to Jeff Francoeur’s 21 year-old stats???

I don’t believe Jurrjens will be even a Super Two this year, so he should be under club control for another four years, no Scoots

Daslied

Surely we’ve discussed this, but I don’t remember a consensus opinion:

Should FW offer Javy (+ change) for Fielder in the offseason? They need pitching, we need offense. I believe Prince’s contract is also up after 2010, which would be perfect if Freeman progresses. He’s here for a year, Braves get a few draft picks or resign him. (I think Prince is eligible for FA after next year.)

This is contigent, of course, on Hudson being strong (and staying next year) and the willingness to take on a player with a bit of an attitude problem (so it seems).

Anyway, just couldn’t remember what all of you that are smarter than me came up with about this subject. :)

 I didn’t make that comparison dude, I said that Roachie is far better in the second half than in the first (which he is) and that Casey has been better in the first half than Adam; and his tOPS+ in the first half is 94 compared to Rochies 86. While Price Fielder is not the RH bat that we need, he’s definitely the type of power/cleanup hitter that we are sorely lacking.

If a trade can be worked out for Fielder from the Brewers for Javy (some sort of package centered around those 2 guys), I’d be in OK with that b/c it makes sense for both teams.

Brewers pretty bad SP, Braves lack a cleanup hitter.

I think addressing the number 4 slot in the lineup is the number 1 priority, more so than finding a ‘true lead off guy’.

It’s all just guessing right now because GM’s can put a star hitter out there at the last second, so anything is possible for the Braves. You just have to love how Wren understands keeping your young guns, Heyward/Freeman/Hanson, is the best way to keep your team better for longer.

Ronald Millsaps

I’d say Hanson is indeed the top rookie.

If you’re going to have a Cy Young and an MVP for the entirety of a league, maybe the same should apply to rookies (yes, I know one can win both). It’s hard to picture Hanson or Andrew McCutchen not getting hardware. J.A. Happ deserves an honorable mention as well, but Hanson is the top rookie.

It’s good to see the home-run ball back in Atlanta. There for a while we were seeing only about one every other game. Now it’s more like two per game.

By “a while”, I mean a year, by the way.

If I were Atlanta, I’d be wary of the high fastball on two strikes; I’ve noticed that pitch seems to be used a lot lately in that situation.

On a different note, has anyone gotten a chance to watch much of the Falcons in preseason? I watched five minutes of the Rams game and none of the Lions game. I have concerns about Grady Jackson’s departure but am cautiously optimistic that our defense isn’t as bad as it looked initially.

Time to win.

These rain delays, this same crap happen in philly last year where a good starter got knocked out and philly picked on the weakest part of our bullpen which was Jojo Reyes that game. Needless to say it got ugly. One of two things to hope, 1. Its a short one or 2.Game just gets rained out since its not official.

If this game is rained out, and tomorrow more rain follows during the day only enabling them to play 1 game on saturday, if all of this takes place could Tommy Hanson come back and pitch one of the 2 games on sunday as a part of a double header that day or not?

The negative comments I’ve heard heard people mention is when people are defending him, saying that some people think he dumb because of his southern accent. Surely us good southerners (and even our Califonia friends, who are often accused of being just a little off-center) wouldn’t hold that against him.

Steve, It goes back to your question of “is Manuel also an idiot because he used his starter?”

First off, let’s say that yes, Charlie Manuel is an idiot. Does that also give Cox the right to be an idiot?

Now, more specifically, which team had the most to lose by losing its starter to a rain delay tonight? As you have indicated by you answer of “Hanson. So what?” to the earlier question, you are showing that the Braves had more to lose than the Phillies tonight by losing their starter to a rain delay.

Therefore, if either manager was going to choose to not use his starter out of the gate for fear of an early rain delay, Cox would be the manager who should give more consideration to not using his starter, because Hanson means more to his team’s success.

To answer your initial question: “Is Manuel also an idiot?” Perhaps yes, perhaps no. I don’t think he’s an idiot, so I won’t attempt to make the argument that he is; but, Manuel can easily afford to lose Pedro. Pedro is not that great a pitcher, plus, he has Moyer if he needs him.
Whereas with Cox, if he loses Hanson (and it appears he may have), he has to turn it over to Medlen & Co, and begin taxing his bullpen in the first game of a critical series.

So, in short, perhaps Cox should’ve given more consideration to going with a reliever to start the game.
And, if it was wrong for Cox to go with Hanson, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it was wrong for Manuel to go with Pedro, because Hanson and Pedro are not the same person, and their respective importance to their teams is not equivalent.

Ok, first off, Medlen>Moyer, and their bullpens would be equally taxed. Second, don’t rationalize. Both managers performed the same action. That’s my point. In fact, I’d say it’s more of a wash than you think because Atlanta has the advantage either way.

Steve, please don’t do this. It’s unbecoming. Tommy Hanson is arguably the Braves best pitcher. Pedro is arguable the Phillies worst starter. If this was Cliff Lee tonight, then we can have a clearer discussion on the matter.

But, as you have really agreed to (whether you want to admit it, or not) the two managers did not do the same thing. You have admitted that Hanson means more to his team’s success than Pedro means to his. Therefore, Cox’s decision to go with Hanson on a rainy night, is riskier than Manuel choosing to go with Pedro.

Both managers had to put someone out there. So, both managers risked losing someone to a rain shortened night. And, as you’ve said (and I completely agree with you), both managers run the risk of taxing their bullpens.

But, Cox chose to go ahead and go with arguably his best pitcher, on a night where it looked like he could lose him early. Manuel did not. He went with perhaps his worst. Therefore, he was not faced with making the same decision as Cox, so the decisions are not a true apples to apples comparison.

And then, if you really want to have fun with this, it could be argued that strategically, Manuel went ahead and went with his “less valuable” starter, so as not to give Cox the idea to not burn Hanson on a rainy night. I’m not saying he did it, or thought about it; but, he could’ve done it. And if he did, then hey, Cox could be an idiot, and Manuel could be a genius for making what, as you say, was the “same decision”, which, I say, is a different decision, because the value of the starters is not the same.

Steve, I’m not making your point, at all. Cox is about to burn one of his best pitchers. Something that would not have happened had he used a reliever.

Manuel is about to burn one of his worst starters. Something that really isn’t that big of a deal.

I’m not even arguing whether what Cox did was right or wrong. I’m simply saying that Cox’s decision to go with his starter could’ve been a bad decision, while Manuel’s decision to go with his starter could’ve been a fine decision.

Which, I know that you agree with, because you’ve already said that Hanson is more valuable to his team than Pedro.

Steve, It’s perfectly relevant. Because, as I’ve said, Cox had a different decision to make than Manuel. The fact that you won’t admit it is troublesome.

Perhaps if you had a specific stat you could point to, you could develop a more sound argument; but in this case, you haven’t, because you refuse to admit that even though Hanson is more important to his team’s success than Pedro, the decision to burn Hanson is not the same as the decision to burn Pedro.

Needless to say, having the lead after the 5th inning (if this game ever resumes and makes it that far) will be critical.

Pedro has to be out…I guess Moyer in there to pitch? A junker baller like him can either be very effective or just flat out stink and get raked over. if the Braves are not patient they can lose to a 46 year old who throws a low 80’s fastball.

I can sympathize with Dave O’Brien because I’ve had a rough day, myself, and I just knew I was in for one this morning, too.

I’m not in position to watch the game if it resumes in a moment but am looking forward to it resuming, indeed.

Honestly, I’d rather be sitting in Philadelphia at this game, watching it rain, than to be watching an NBA game.

Falcons-Chargers tomorrow night. Interesting. Might be a Super Bowl preview, and the two quarterbacks in question might be the two best leaders in the game. (As far as the AFC itself goes, Manning-Brady might be giving way to Rivers-Roethlisberger.)

Given the NFL careers thus far of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, why is everyone making such a big deal about Mark Sanchez? Not saying Leinart and Bush don’t have potential, but they absolutely did not play in the SEC.

Lane Kiffin is doing a fine job of acting successful due to his lack of popularity with the “Florida internet crowd.” He’s booed out of dislike, not out of respect. Unlike his dad, Lane is still an unknown, yet-to-be-proven quantity.

Back to baseball, winning these three games would send a serious message that the Braves are ready to reclaim their division.

As for the home run to Ryan Howard, his homer doesn’t mean Tommy Hanson should’ve walked him, folks. It was, after all, a solo shot, and you know when facing the guy that you can get him out and that he can drive one deep off of you, so there is indeed mutual respect. Besides, Howard’s far from the only guy in that lineup. Walking someone in a scoreless game with no one on base isn’t a good move. If it were a 5-5 game in the seventh with two outs and a base open, yeah, I could see walking him.

I bet Boston would take Chipper and give us some nice players in return. Maybe not a 5-1 deal, but certainly a 3-1 with maybe Lester and at least one other worthy addition.

Maybe they’ll throw in running water and in-door toilets for a few of us souther hicks too! (Had to read my earlier story to get this…)

Brian, I think it depends on the team, their payroll, and their needs. Lowe hasn’t pitched in the southern heat before and I think he has been worn out…and it’s been a cool Summer! I don’t hate these guys and it’s ok not to trade them too, but if I’m Wren I’m exploring it because I need some payroll flexibility to fix the offense (Heyward is not enough) and build a deeper pen. Jamie Moyer’s not as bad a pitcher as a few of you are indicating. He might lack the physical prowess of the past but is intelligent/crafty.

We need to get the bats going. Still a lot of baseball to go in this game.

I’d consider benching Chipper for Omar Infante. The former could use a day off, heck, a few innings off. Also, unlike a closer, there’s no need to worry about when to warm up/use a pinch-hitter.

Still a lot of baseball to go in this game. Can’t waste time or chances, though, of course.

Moyer is pitching to the lesser lineup. Playing on one of the best offensive teams in the league has its benefits, you get plenty of run support and you don’t have to face the best offensive team in the league because you play for them. No offense but J.A. Happ shutting down the braves isn’t as impressive as say Tommy Hanson or anyone shutting down the phillies.

Steve, I suggest noting more than the idea that it is worth discussion. I don’t think Chipper or Lowe is done but I see some bold moves ahead because I don’t see payroll increasing much. Trading Javy isn’t going to free up all the money we’ll need to fix te offense and add depth to the pen. Therefore, I look first at who is making the most money and asking is it worth it. Trading Chipper and Lowe (eating some of his salary as no one is taking the whole thing) would free up m9ney to get a bat or two, keep Gonzo and Soriano and add another arm. I think we could get at least one productive piece for each player, if not two.

So, trading a guy that makes 12MM won’t free up enough cash, but trading a guy making 13MM and a guy making 15MM (while eating some of his salary) will? Keep in mind that those guys have earned 23MM of that 28MM already, and if they “progress” to their respective means for the remainder of the season, they’ll likely be worth that kind of cash (and definitely will if we somehow make the playoffs). So, why do we get rid of two guys who are already worth fairly close to their respective salaries (while being worth much more in the past) and attempt to re-invest it in…what? First, Chipper does not suck and neither does Lowe, let me be clear about that. Second, Steve, the team, IMHO, needs to get better offensively and deeper in the pen. Thy do not have a high payroll ceiling so it seems logical that they are going to have to subtract salary. I’m merely suggestion that Chipper and Lowe be included in the possibilities of players to move because we can get something descent in return, clear space, and hold onto our good young players. But really, the idea that you wouldn’t even consider moving high salary players seems emotional and not business like at all.

Of course not, but Chipper is going nowhere, like it or not. Neither is Lowe. If a team wanted Lowe, they’d have signed him in the offseason. They’re not going to take him now (at the price of the highest bidder) and give up pieces to get him.

Secondly, the team’s bullpen is really good. Of our 5 bullpen stalwarts (Raffy, Gonzo, OF, Moylan and Medlen) the highest FIP is 3.36. That’s good. Luis Valdez and Craig Kimbrel figure to be in the bullpen mix next year as well, and they should provide cheap back-of-the-pen depth. In addition, we’ll likely re-sign one of Soriano and Gonzo. But keep in mind that teams with a “payroll ceiling” like us are usually not wise to invest large sums in the bullpen.

Thirdly, if we get rid of Chipper, who plays third? (Don’t say Infante). We likely won’t replace that production.

Lowe wouldn’t be a bad option to move, but it’s not happening. Pick your reason, but it ain’t happening. Besides, his peripherals suggest an ERA below 4.00, and in that case I doubt many (he says, only half joking) would be complaining.

I understand what you are saying, it makes sense, but to state something we disagree with as a metaphysical certainty is a bit much. Lot can happen in the next 2-5 months. That said, I’d sure like to hear other ideas, that’s is why I said this should be open for discussion, I didn’t say “Chipper should be trade”, or “Lowe should be traded”. I’d like to see just how other bloggers think we’re going to fix things because all I’ve read is trading Javy and I really don’t see how that is sufficient to address all our needs. Even if you bring up Heyward, that isn’t enough. Are we keeping Adam? I’d like to, I’d also like to keep Gonzo and Soriano too. So I’m open to hearing just how you and others would approach the offseason given that you have needs and your payroll isn’t likely to increase much, if at all?

I’m glad we have the meat of the order coming up in the eighth, and I hope batters remember it’s perfectly okay to take a walk most of the time. One of the best ways to kill an inning is to try to blast a 2-0 pitch when you maybe aren’t seeing the ball so well.

I guess Bud Selig is planning to do absolutely nothing against the umpire who gave Florida’s catcher a fist bump. Never mind the fact that that sort of thing attacks the credibility of the game infinitely more than individuals taking steroids.

Steve, I forgot to answer your “whom plays….” questions. My answer is that I don’t know. That is why I said explore all options, see what other teams are willing to deal and put together something. To say that id Chipper isn’t playing third (which is frequently the case, or seems like it) that there’s no 0ne else that could play there just doesn’t ring logical to me. I like a GM like Kenny Williams because he doesn’t stand pat and always seems to be able to make moves. Of course he can spend more which helps too.Bottom line is if you never ask other teams and just say “oh it’ll never happen”, then you’ll never know if that was true or not and that is a bad way to run any franchise.

Not Chop Chop, eh? Well, you write like him.

What am I stating as a metaphysial certainty?

Were I running the team (thankfully I’m not), I’d probably let Heyward open 2010 with the big club and platoon Church and Diaz in left if I can’t get a big bopper for left. If I can, I keep Heyward in the minors, and platoon Church and Diaz in right, and promote Heyward in June. Jordan Schafer opens in AAA as insurance, and is promoted as needed or if he earns it (with McLouth moved to left)

I re-sign Soriano and let Gonzo walk and hopefully recoup a draft pick. My opening-day bullpen would be: Soriano, Moylan, Medlen, O’Flaherty, Logan, and Acosta/Valdez. Craig Kimbrel opens in AAA and is promoted in June barring setbacks and such.

I offer LaRoche a two-year deal. He won’t take it, so my plan B would be to try to swing a deal for Konerko. Plan C is to play Prado at 1st and Kelly at 2nd and hope like hell Freeman is ready by June.

This is using my limited amount of info about the Braves’ payroll situation and the availabily of players via trade, as well as my scouts’ opinions of several key players (Freeman being one of them). If I had that information, my plan would likely be different (and I suppose if I was to give a complete answer I’d go over to Cots and do a payroll breakdown as well but I’m not gonna do that tonight).

With that, I feel like I’ve addressed holes at 1B and LF/RF adequately enough to be a playoff-caliber team. If I can get a big bat for LF, the team is a threat to go deep into the playoffs. If I do that and Heyward is a beast, we’re really good. Oh yeah, I trade KK.

It was a good pitch to swing at for Adam, just didn’t hit it as well as I thought when it came off the bat. Chipper’s at bat this inning was bad. I know the guy is struggling but I still expect batter at bats even if they are not yielding the results he’s use to. Agree with what Joe Simpson said about that at bat. August 28th, 2009

Steve sounds reasonable, but I don’t see the improvement in the offense and I sure don’t see a deeper better pen. Either way, what you propose is not revenue-neutral so where you going to get the money from? Trading Javy is going to be enough. If I could only hold on to one between Gonzo/Soriano, it will be the guy who will take the least money. But I would prefer having a lefty given the lineups in the East. I would also like to add Qualls to the pen. Now if you could get Qualls, Konerko, and a leadoff guy then I’d be happy. I don’t think you have to trade Lowe and Chipper to do that, but one of them, plus maybe KK has to go to have enough salary to get all that done.

I’m all for it. I agree with Cox, Norton makes us better. I think he’s our emergency catcher. I’ll pay to see that.

If Howard could play all 162 games against the Braves, he’d win the triple crown hands down.

Bring on Lidge.

If there was any justice in this world he would have ten blown saves against us. He is the luckiest mother f***er on the planet.

Come on Braves!

“Gonzo got lucky with that pitch over the middle of the plate to Howard”

Don’t know if its lucky, maybe he got his timing off or that pitch did look more inside than the others that he hit for homers. Whatever the reason, with no one on base i’ll gladly take the double. Gonzo was very successful in his attempt to not give up a Ryan Howard homer.

Either way, what you propose is not revenue-neutral so where you going to get the money from?

That was the caveat of my post…not gonna take the time to do that tonight. In the future, I might. Remind me later sometime.

Now if you could get Qualls, Konerko, and a leadoff guy then I’d be happy.

Ok, I should know who you are with that Qualls comment, but I don’t. Anyway, that would not be revenue-neutral either if you keep Soriano/Gonzo, and if it’s Soriano or Qualls I want Raffy. And I don’t think a leadoff guy is gonna help this team appreciably. We need HR pop. We need a big-time cleanup hitter (no knock on Mac). That will get us much farther than a speed threat.

I don’t trade KK and Vazquez. Leaves us no pitching depth whatsoever, unless we want to rush Minor.
