Garret Jones is a 28 year-old player with a career .267 avg. What about that says “left fielder for the next 5 years?”
Any weather updates out there? Is the system moving past Philly or hanging around? Tonights plans hang in the balance.
August 28th, 20095:05 pm
Fraid not, Steve.
For the record, I don’t think VT will beat Alabama. They suck too much on offense.

flange1 (from awhile back),
You’re right. W/o Gilson Lavis, the band ain’t Squeeze. It’s Difford & Tilbrook and some other guys.
I didn’t say I would do it, I just posed it as a question. This is a blog – different opinions.
And maybe Garrett Jones stayed in the minors long enough to learn how to hit – something iffy with JF.
August 28th, 20095:08 pm
OK! Here are the Rally McTurtle photos! That first picture in the gallery should be last, but whatever.
Click on each photo to make it bigger. Wish I coulda gotten them to load onto PhotoBucket so I could type descriptions under each one, but this was the best I could do…
August 28th, 20095:09 pm
The only way JJ becomes touchable is if he doesn’t continue to improve or the Braves just don’t want to deal with Boras
Hold up. You didn’t wear dresses to football games when you were @ USC, cab? Don’t you all have any standards?
August 28th, 20095:10 pm
Yeah, I should have clarified…just meant a day game on Sunday
August 28th, 20095:11 pm
I’ll admit that is a possibility. I just think that based on their track records and the history of similar players, JJ is MUCH, MUCH more likely to give you a better return on his salary then Jones, even in the Boras arbitration years.
The Skeeter is here! And so are my beloved Phillies. You guys watch the old man school the young one tonight. It will be quite memorable to watch hanson only pitch 3 1/3 innings while giving up 8 runs while pedro pitches 8 innings of shut out ball tonight.
how’s the transfer going? no pressure, but i hear a lot of Rally McCrickets out here.
I wonder if the Maryland Terrapins have a Rally McTurtle…could be infringing on copyrights.
DOB's Luggage from an undisclosed caribbean island
August 28th, 20095:12 pm
Sorry bout the rain, boss. See ya next week!
August 28th, 20095:13 pm
Here’s a great article on my favorite ballplayer, Ichiro. Found it on Yahoo. Every baseball junkie should love this article. It goes into those non-traditional stats like BABIP for those stat geeks, and baseball history as well for the traditionalists.
oops – sorry about that – McCrickets have gone away – nice photos!!
August 28th, 20095:14 pm
Rally turtle bears an uncanny resemblance to Brian McCann
Let’s go giants! Let’s go giants!
DOB’s luggage controls the weather? Who knew
August 28th, 20095:15 pm
You can’t props yourself, thats immoral, you’ll go blind doing that
Someone tell Paul Lentz…QUICK!
It’s raining here in philly. probably will be a delay of some sort.
August 28th, 20095:16 pm
Or should I say let’s go Rockies so my stomach will quit hurting every night.
August 28th, 20095:17 pm
“pedro pitches 8 innings of shut out ball tonight”
The only way Pedro shuts us down for 8 innings is if Greg Norton was our only hitter, and even then, he might walk in a run. Guys got eagle eyes.
August 28th, 20095:19 pm
Oh that’s OK…
And I’ve got it all figured out–if tonight’s game is rained out, the Fillies cann have Martinez pitch tomorrow night, and then Lee cann pitch game one of the doubleheader on Sunday. With that being a DGANG, Bobby cann give Ross the start against Lee…
No sweat! Sorry for the delay. Not sure why it wasn’t working.
Hmm…good point. Well, all they have to do is ask me and I’ll give them permission to use it for a “small” fee.
I know what you mean… (I’ll just leave it at that…)
Your and idiot Kurdt. You really don’t think you can use the same hitter for every at bat do you?
Whats the weather prognosis man? Gonna stop tonight?
August 28th, 20095:21 pm
Here are his numbers for this year which carry more weight than when he was up 2 years ago (2007)
IN 189 ab’s he has 15 2b, 15 hr’s and 8 sb’s.
Look at the ab’s. multiply everything by 3 – 45 doubles, 45 homers, 24 stolen bases. OPS of .961
Yes, that guy can be my corner outfielder.
No, I don’t. You don’t Pedro is capable of 8 innings of shutout ball do you?
Surely we’ve discussed this, but I don’t remember a consensus opinion:
Should FW offer Javy (+ change) for Fielder in the offseason? They need pitching, we need offense. I believe Prince’s contract is also up after 2010, which would be perfect if Freeman progresses. He’s here for a year, Braves get a few draft picks or resign him. (I think Prince is eligible for FA after next year.)
This is contigent, of course, on Hudson being strong (and staying next year) and the willingness to take on a player with a bit of an attitude problem (so it seems).
Anyway, just couldn’t remember what all of you that are smarter than me came up with about this subject.
August 28th, 20095:22 pm
And now that I’ve said that, Pedro probably WILL pitch 8 innings of shut out ball.
Jeans and flip flops, dear…this is California!
(or in the case of most sorority girls, halter tops and things they claimed were shorts )
August 28th, 20095:24 pm
The local weather man is saying sporadic rain off and on. And at times could be locally heavy downpours.
August 28th, 20095:25 pm
The flying dominican is capable of 9 innings, but he has to get streched out first.
August 28th, 20095:27 pm
cabravesfan – just jeans and flip-flops?
August 28th, 20095:28 pm
or in the case of most sorority girls, halter tops and things they claimed were shorts
This makes me wonder what the hell i’m doing indoors on a computer on a nice hot Southern CA Friday…
August 28th, 20095:29 pm
Philliephanphorliphe, bought your Vick jersey yet?
August 28th, 20095:30 pm
Bobby’s Cox – because its to darn hot and smokey for them to be out
you’ll have to come out here to find out
That is a very good question (and just an FYI our first home game is next weekend…)
Brandon from Warner Robins
August 28th, 20095:31 pm
sweep the phillies.
from the radar on weather.com, looks like we might get about an hour of overcast skies, then rain the rest of the night. if the game does start on time, we’d better score early.
The Atlanta Braves
August 28th, 20095:33 pm
Okay, if you say so Brandon.
August 28th, 20095:35 pm
cabravesfan – I have an opening on my calendar just before Halloween – I’ll bring a costume
Just noticed that the rain is no longer banging against my philly hotel window so it looks like kittens and puppies out there now rather than cats and dogs… Gonna wear my McCann T taking the subway to the stadium if it looks like they will play… but I just noticed they are not selling on stubhub anymore for tonight… not sure when they usually cutoff sales, but thought it was closer to game time than this… maybe they know more about the plans due to rain…
Rally McTurtle pics! Awww, he’s a cute little guy. I like the picture of him behind the branches sorta peeking his head out.
August 28th, 20095:36 pm
VJ – You should show up as a Ghostbuster.
That’s a bit of a small sample size to be projecting the guy has a 40-home run hitter.
Instead of multiplying everyting by three, why don’t we see what his stats look like at the end of NEXT year (when he has to start making adjustments to major-league pitching, because he most certainly will)?
If he has 40 homers and 40 doubles, then yep, that could be my corner OF, too.
August 28th, 20095:39 pm
and just for the record, Rally McTurtle does not look like an egg sac.
If its raining hard right at the start, do they delay? Or do they immediately reschedule?
sorry, team’s out of town that weekend…how’s Nov. 14th sound?
August 28th, 20095:41 pm
The Braves are 17-14 vs. Nats, Reds, Pirates, Padres, and D-Backs.
The Phillies are 24-7 vs. the same teams.
Difference is the number of games we’re out of division lead.
Hanson is 7 games over .500. The Braves are 7 games over. He is the real deal!
SWEEP this weekend or I won’t need to purchase playoff tickets.
August 28th, 20095:42 pm
Daslied, I think that could work if the brewers would agree. I think the change would have to be significant though.
Still raining, and we could have a verdict soon. They’re meeting again now to try to make a decision. One forecast indicated no way they could play, another had small chance.
Problem is, forecast tomorrow is also bad until early evening, so DH would be hard until Sunday. And on Sunday, with the ESPN game at 8, they’d have to start at 1 and hope for no rain delays that would carry it into that ESPN slot.
August 28th, 20095:44 pm
Ugh, I highly dislike doubleheaders but I’d vote for Sunday. Then again, I don’t know what the forecast for Sunday is.
August 28th, 20095:47 pm
Angels close to acquiring Kazmir from the Rays -
August 28th, 20095:48 pm
Looking at the forecast, I’m not sure if they’ll be able play any games this weekend
August 28th, 20095:52 pm
cabravesfan – that’s a week after my daughter’s birthday, and, since she’s in Carlsbad, that might work out. I’ll just wait outside the Coliseum for you.
Nova Scotia Steve
August 28th, 20095:53 pm
This is what we all need….
August 28th, 20095:54 pm
Hope you get to go to the game! Good choice on the shirt.
Thanks! Yeah, in those last ones he’s in our garden. I fed him some juicy worms that day!
DOB Problem is, forecast tomorrow is also bad until early evening, so DH would be hard until Sunday.
That’s not too big of a problem…
Thanks for the info.
nolie in his career, laroche has a .773OPS in the first half. kotchman for the braves this year had a .764OPS, and has a .749OPS for his entire career. so, yeah, learoche in the first half is still better than casey kotchman. (DAP)
I didn’t make that comparison dude, I said that Roachie is far better in the second half than in the first (which he is) and that Casey has been better in the first half than Adam; and his tOPS+ in the first half is 94 compared to Rochies 86. So I fail to see how you figure that Roachie is better than Casey. What is it that I’m missing? Cause I think you are missing adjustments.
no way they play game tonight. probably not tomorrow either. sucks for the braves as they need this series more than we do. we’ve already got the division wrapped up with a little nice red bow. hahaha!!
August 28th, 20095:55 pm
So you all might know Cliff Lee is 5-0 with a 0.68 ERA in five starts since joining the Phillies. But it gets better (or worse, depending on your view).
Dude is 8-0 with an 0.97 ERA and .198 opponents’ average in his past eight starts.
August 28th, 20095:56 pm
Bandwagon Philly fan,
He’s mean he’s due for a pounding…
Or at least a loss!
once again, all you have to do is find me (in a sea of 90,000… )
August 28th, 20095:57 pm
Thanks for that Nova Scotia Steve.
They opened the gates and thousands of fans are entering, so I gotta think they at least believe they might get it in…
August 28th, 20095:59 pm
While Price Fielder is not the RH bat that we need, he’s definitely the type of power/cleanup hitter that we are sorely lacking.
If a trade can be worked out for Fielder from the Brewers for Javy (some sort of package centered around those 2 guys), I’d be in OK with that b/c it makes sense for both teams.
Brewers pretty bad SP, Braves lack a cleanup hitter.
I think addressing the number 4 slot in the lineup is the number 1 priority, more so than finding a ‘true lead off guy’.
August 28th, 20096:00 pm
cabravesfan – but how many in just jeans and flip-flops?
August 28th, 20096:01 pm
Hope we get the game in tonight. It’s my birthday and I want a win
August 28th, 20096:04 pm
I say “Pift” DOB all that means is that Lee is way overdue for an ole fashion whoopin!!
DOB, I do enjoy your columns but you totally jinxed Tommy tonight with the “Could Hanson be Rookie of the Year?” title, watch him give up 10 runs in 2 innings.
August 28th, 20096:06 pm
In 5 games as a Phillie Cliff Lee has 5 hits. He’s only given up 3 earned runs over those same 5 games. That’s a hell of a ratio.
August 28th, 20096:07 pm
All right! C’mon get the game in. I’ve got nothing else to do.
August 28th, 20096:08 pm
I used to travel quite a bit, I’ve flown United, Northwest, Delta, Continental, Midwest, Southwest, US Airways and several foreign airlines… I found Continental to be the best. Northwest was only good if I was traveling overseas. Delta was crap.
“While Price Fielder is not the RH bat that we need, he’s definitely the type of power/cleanup hitter that we are sorely lacking.”
Um…his name is PRINCE, and um…he’s a left-handed hitter. You are probably thinking about Cecil, his had, who is a right-handed hitter. He’s quite the power hitter, too, but he’s old, and was slow and played horrible defense even when he was young.
LaRoche maybe winning player of the month for the NL in August?
August 28th, 20096:09 pm
DOB You should have taken Airtran, they have the smallest lost luggage percantage of all major airlines. I’m done with Delta. I am actually on one of their flights right now from San diego using the wi-fi for the first time and this is awsome. I get to watch my braves (on inet)for the first time ever during a flight. And of course talk ball on the ol blog.
August 28th, 20096:10 pm
you got a reference for that version of the Churchill statement? I’ve read it in several actual books and it never was like that. The gist is what I stated, not sure exactly what you stated means. Gee, I can’t even find it on google for some reason. I wonder why?
August 28th, 20096:11 pm
Heath – gosh, I’ve always found Continental to be among the worst – bad attitues all around. US Airways and AirTran are at the bottom…
guess it all depends on what crew you get.
Hanson wins 3 more he’s rook of the year for sure.
August 28th, 20096:14 pm
this being Southern California, probably more then in most other places
August 28th, 20096:17 pm
They’re taking the tarp off the field, and it’s stopped raining. Soggy as a swamp, but it’s not raining.
August 28th, 20096:21 pm
Well, you can probably mark off Holliday and Bay from the list of guys Wren will target for 2010, right? I mean, major dollars with the big teams all getting their paws in that jar. If you look at the FA hitters on the market this winter, those two are the only ones worth the hassel. Not happening though.
It’s all just guessing right now because GM’s can put a star hitter out there at the last second, so anything is possible for the Braves. You just have to love how Wren understands keeping your young guns, Heyward/Freeman/Hanson, is the best way to keep your team better for longer.
August 28th, 20096:22 pm
cabravesfan – well, you know……what else can I say?
August 28th, 20096:24 pm
DOB They’re taking the tarp off the field, and it’s stopped raining.
August 28th, 20096:25 pm
CaliChopper: The Band of Skulls female singer definitely has some Chrissie Hynde tendencies, as well as Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs. If you like that, you should also try Spinnerette, the new band with Brody Dalle, the tattooed girl from the Derailers. The band also has Jack Irons (Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam) and some other accomplished dudes from Queens of the Stone Age and other bands. They rock.
Check out Ms. Dalle:
August 28th, 20096:27 pm
They’re gonna start on time and try to get in 6-7 innings, at least, before the rain that’s supposed to hit around 8:30.
August 28th, 20096:29 pm
So, with the tarp off the field, does that mean that they are going to try to start the game on time?
August 28th, 20096:30 pm
Ha..site didn’t refresh. Thanks DOB.
August 28th, 20096:31 pm
DOB, that girl has some lucious lips. Don’t know about that kind of music, but…
Try to get in 6-7 innings? Oh great, umps will be calling balls strikes all night now… Bobby’s gonna get ejected.
August 28th, 20096:33 pm
So Kazmir actually made it through waivers, or did the Angels claim him? And if so, why didnt any other team try to claim him before the Angels did?
August 28th, 20096:34 pm
Much appreciated DOB! Thanks…
And Band of Skulls rock.
August 28th, 20096:35 pm
How many other rotations in the majors have no lefty starters? Guess it doesn’t matter that much since we’ve been so good, but I’d think most clubs had at least one.
"You all are Cox apologists"
August 28th, 20096:37 pm
I wonder who will manage the Braves next year? I sure hope it’s none of the guys who are currently coaches. The Braves need a young manager, someone who isn’t scard to get in a player’s face. They also need a manager that isn’t loyal to a fault, one who will play the best nine guys evey night, regardless of what they did last year. Any manager with good sense wouldn’t even allow Norton on the team bus, especially not pinch hitting in key spots. Face it fellows, the Braves will be losers as long as Cox manages. His post season record speaks for itself.
How can anyone not like Ron Gant? I love that guy. I’m in a lovin mood today, I even loved DOB earlier, though it’s worn off some since.
August 28th, 20096:38 pm
Today is Tommy Hanson’s birthday–Aug. 28, 1986. Maybe that will bring the dude some good karma.
Steve from OH
August 28th, 20096:39 pm
What the hell is wrong with people?
Might have something to do with the large contract.
Thats the primary reason the Rays are moving him I guess.
I’m actually warming up to Ron Gant…
“Alllll niggghhhtt looonnnggg”
August 28th, 20096:41 pm
Love this blog man…
So amusing…people here make me laugh…It’s good for at least a few laughs daily.
