Lessons learned tonight:

1. Diaz has no chance of remaining in the leadoff spot when McLouth comes back. The HOF manager is calling the shots.

2. When Cox goes for the right nostril, the bunt is on.

3. Since Chipper came out of retirement tonight, will he have to give back the gold watch?

Perhaps Bobby should bench Diaz so Kelly can “get going”?

I know this sounds a litte odd but I’d like to see Diaz either remain at leadoff when McClouth comes back or go to the 6-hole and put Escobar back in the two spot. Prado has cooled some and should hit lower in the order. I only liked dropping Escobar when they had him 5th.

Portly Chris Masters improved to 8-4 for playoff bound Danville, striking out 8 in 5 innings and leads the Appy League in Ks. His ERA is now down to 1.42. What do you think of Garrett Jones from Pittsburg and how he has been brought along. He’s 28 I think and came up in 07 for 80 ab’s and did not come back up until 09. He is tearing it up now for the Pirates. (KL)

I really don’t know the guy ol’ buddy. Usually guys who come up at that age have only a few decent years at best, but I have no idea about him. I assume they kept him down that long for a reason. It’s always nice to see an underdog beat the system so I hope he has some good years.
I’m not really advocating that every hitter needs a year at least at AAA, though if not needed on the big club, it sure ain’t gonna hurt. My peeve is with folks who say that AA is stronger than AAA just because some clubs have a guy jump AAA once in a while.
If I had been doing Heyward this year and he stayed healthy I would have moved him to AAA like they did to AA last season and then AFL. I believe that is what would have happened if he was 100% now. Give him a hard look in the spring and go from there. The current economy might predispose them to wait till midyear to bring him up depending on their other options.
Just looked Jones up, he spent about 5 seasons at AAA, generally getting better each year. Maybe just a late bloomer.

N Nine, here is Nortons scouting report, you might be interested:

Assets

His ability to get on base and hit for power off the bench is a major asset. Switch hits, and can play first base and the corner outfield spots in a pinch.

Flaws

His weakness with the glove has kept him from playing every day. Also tends to hit more poorly from the right side of the plate. Doesn’t run very well.

Career potential

A good bat off the bench.
