Rob from SC (August 28th, 2009 10:31 pm): “I told everyone a month ago that Chipper was not the same hitter and he was starting to suck. I did not want it to happen but it has. Everyone blasted me. Leading the way was Random and Steve. Make some more excuses for CHipper now”

“a month ago”? Well, that’s one way to make yourself look smart.

Dude, you’ve been bashing on Chipper’s case all season long, not just a month ago. Talk about a stopped clock.

Chipper Apr 09: .322/.420/.508
Chipper May 09: .312/.443/.494

Rob from SC (May 2nd, 2009 6:23 pm): “Damnit Chipper”

Rob from SC (May 3rd, 2009 2:49 pm): “I am glad they are walking Chipper, Francoeur is hotter”

Rob from SC (June 7th, 2009 2:53 pm): “watch them walk Chipper”

Chipper homers.

Rob from SC (June 7th, 2009 2:54 pm): “How did that go out”

And then you call Chipper “a wuss”.

Which was not unprecedented — you had previously said that Soriano’s $6.1M salary had made him “soft”.

You banged the drum loudly for Schafer all Spring Training, and you said that Boyer was the Braves’ “closer of the future” — that he would be closing for the Braves by midseason.

Also, Rob (from SC) (June 2nd, 2009 7:35 pm): “Forget replacing Glavine, Hanson needs to replace Kawakami”

Small wonder you have no credibility here — a stopped clock at least has decoration value.

Chipper Jul 09: .284/.413/.494

“excuses for CHipper”?

He sure doesn’t need excuses for April — July, does he?

For August? How ’bout the Braves recently going with a 20-22 man roster, with injured players that cannot play yet are not DLed. Chipper needs a blow, and also needs to recover from his own nagging injuries (wrist, oblique?). Has for weeks now.

How ’bout the Braves not having a legitimate clean-up hitter?

Yes, Chipper’s had a rough month — that happens to ‘most every player — but he ain’t dead yet. You were trying to dance on his grave as early as May and June.

What is your problem?

DOB,

Sure, the Phillies have avoided the nagging injuries. But they also havent changed their position players much. The Braves made changes at 1B, 2B, RF, Center, and LF platoon. The Braves went from Casey to LaRoach at 1st, Schaffer to Nate in CF, Garrett Andderson was splitting time with Diaz in left, Frenchy got traded from RF, KJ struggled at 2nd, so we had to make a change there.

My point is, although we’ve had injuries, the fact that the Braves (who opened the season struggled mightily), Frank Wren had to adjust during the year. Therefore, no continuity from our position players, because we had to keep making changes, searching for upgrades, and that also contributed to the number of games played.

Cox and the mixture of athletic players and baseball players won 14 pennants in a row. I was there to watch it and was lucky to attend three world series. Those guys had talent but they also had Glavin, Smoltz, Maddux, and good fouth and fifth starters every year. They won with talent and a great deal of luck. The Braves need to get some talent. This team has been winning on luck. That’s not enough when playing the really good teams.

TnBrian, I was thinking the same thing about DOB’s earlier post. They were remarkably healthy last year too. None of their major players missed significant time. Last year the braves were riddled with season ending injuries to pitchers and nagging injuries to position players. This year the mets have set the record for injuries to a team I believe. This is a good window for the phillies. They are probably making the playoffs so it will be interesting to see what they do. They won it last year but as so many philly and mets fans have told us over the years apparently winning one isn’t enough. Just isn’t good enough to be good in the regular season but you got to win the whole thing. We’ll see how the phillies do with their recent string of division titles.

“[mlbtraderumors.com site deleted so I can link a couple more recent MLBTR sites below]

“A large part of it is games and innings pitched, wins and losses, so Hudson’s time out hurt him pretty badly.”

MLB Trade Rumors has begun forecasting Type A/B free agents based on their updated performance this season.

Tim Dierkes, August 1, 2009: “At the end of each season, The Elias Sports Bureau ranks all MLB players numerically based on a bunch of stats. Every player is categorized in one of five position groups and by league. The rankings cover a two-year time period. They are used to determine whether free agents are Type A, Type B, or neither. . . . Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings last year. Eddie’s incredible work was made possible in large part due to information provided by ESPN’s Keith Law. Eddie is now providing the rankings exclusively to MLB Trade Rumors. . . . The rankings will obviously change over the next two months. Keep in mind that if players change leagues, they are ranked in their new league. New Yankee Jerry Hairston Jr. is a Type B in the AL, while Adam LaRoche falls just short of B back in the NL.”

Here’s a couple of links:

Possible Type A Free Agents

Possible Type B Free Agents

Thru 16/17 Jun 09, MLBTR projects both •Mike Gonzalez and •Rafael Soriano as Type A, and •Garret Anderson as Type B.

(FWIW, John Smoltz is currently listed as between Type B and nuttin, honey.)

But even if Hudson becomes a Type B, would the Braves even get a draft pick if they have declined to exercise their part of the mutual option? Teams have to have offered arbitration and have it declined by the player to get compensatory draft picks for losing a free agent.

Maybe if Braves exercised their part of the mutual option, but Hudson declined to exercise his, it would be an analogous situation to declining an offer of arbitration.

I don’t know.

Steve from OH, yeah, I remember seeing BA’s Ben Badler say Teheran sat 93-95 and touched 96 with a plus change. 6′2” 150 lbs? Like he said, kid’s going to add some velo once he fills out. How is Milligan defensively? Can he stick at centerfield?

You would understand that Schaffer and McLouth are not in their class if you saw them play.

I have no doubt of that, but I think you are confusing “athlete” with “good baseball player.”

Random–I do not think they would be allowed to offer Hudson arbitration were they to decline his option.

Bobby is an old male bimbo. If he were any more dense he’d burst into a super-nova, before forming a black hole and devouring the earth…

Good nickname for him, Bobby (Black Hole) Cox..

Can’t imagine the Braves offering GA arbitration. But the other three? I sure hope they do.

Steve from OH ,

Try to understand code words. Listen to Joe Simpson sometimes as he references ” good baseball players” and athletic players”. The same thing is done in football especially at the QB position.

Me neither.

BUT . . .

If the Braves exercised their part of the option, but Hudson declined to exercise his part, would THAT be analogous to the normal case of a player declining arbitration, thus allowing the Braves a compensatory pick? Or not?

I don’t know.

DOB,

Interesting post about # games played for the Braves.

FWIW, LaRoche has played in 117 games this season, McLouth 101.

Right now the Braves may have the worst defensive outfield in baseball:

GA is still slow and unless the ball is hit straight to him you can’t expect him to catch it – shoot, half the time he can’t even get it before it stops rolling – and last night where was he on that ‘flair’ to left with the infield pulled in? Poor Escobar ran his butt off (Bobby) to get to it and GA was just jogging in like it was never his responsibility in the first place.

Church and/or Infante are average at best – chalk it up to it not being their regular position, but the fact remains they don’t make the plays.

The Hittin Fool Diaz (sorry but he misses as many as he hits)…plays right like like he used to play left – like every chance is a crap shoot. He’s missed two at the wall over the past couple of weeks that seemingly every opponents outfielder makes against us every night…and he ‘encircled’ the fly last night like he was playing in a tornado (nobody else seemed to have any problems).

Face it, we’re an ordinary team with above-average starting pitching.

DirtyDawg ,

That’s exactly what I have been saying. It’s as plane as the nose on your face. Who of the Braves outfield could have made the catch that Gwynn made the other night. Its too bad that a love fest and a condition of denial has consumed some on this blog.

Steve from OH,

Thanks for the scouting link report on Teheran. I think in 2-3 years time he can be the next Tommy Hanson if he develops physically fills in his frame and works on that 2nd pitch. Good to hear he has a very high seiling. That’s enough for us to keep hope that he will develop and eventually be a SP for us in the future.

Random,

quite frankly sir, I don’t know if I should be scared or not! What’s with the “filing of quotes from fellow bloggers” to be used against them at a later time?

Lou Vales – WOW! 2 whole posts without mentioning Hooters, 4 star hotel beds, or batting cages. I am impressed!

Speaking of reading comprehension, try reading my post again. Your retort leads me to believe that you didn’t get it.
