Probably a smart thing for “huntin boy” to lay off any comments after tonight’s loss. I’d vote batting CJ 5th next year and put Mac in the 3rd spot and a new power hitter at cleanup.
Doc- Got the feeling as Lee “carves the turkey” tomorrow that everyone will look like a No. 8 hitter. Doesn’t matter who’s hitting where. Maybe we should do the Billy Martin “draw the lineup out of a hat” deal?
I firmly believe that Bowden will not leave unless he is forcibly removed by Burt Reynolds and his Palm Beach High School buddies. This is the story of the Braves season, tommy hanson gets rained out and instead of a washed up pedro martinez they get moyer to dominate them. It is funny i ever got hopeful in this team because when i take the “braves homer glasses” offf i can see the their lineup is horrible. any team that has to put omar infante in CF has absolutely no chance to make the playoffs.
Does anyone realize that Howard has single handedly beat us in two games in less than a month. Why would Bobby not treat this freak like he did Bonds, oh wait, he allowed his pitchers to get pumbled by him too so throw that out. Bobby is without question the most stubborn human being in sports. He has to be. I think Mac is responsible for this too, I mean, Hanson and Medlen are just babies up for the first time but Mac should know better. Wake up Brian!
I think 2 innings, a homerun, and a rain delay might have cost Hanson his shot.

This game article tonight is hilarious the quote from mccann especially. Both teams are playing in a ” high school park” and just like howard all mccann has to do ” is flip it” to left field for a home run. That sounds like bobby cox talking! Phillys ballpark is a sand box that is for sure, but both teams are hitting in it! I am so sick and tired of the excuses this team gives when they lose. Howard hit two bombs on sunday night baseball last time they played. The attitude arounnd this team is becoming sickening. They have the attitude of a manager that made the playoffs year after year, but the problem is this current group does not make the playoffs anymore, and minus chipper hasnt won a damn thing
It’s been a tough week. While I still hold out hope that the ‘09 Braves can get it done, the climb is getting awfully tough and the time to get it done is drawing short.
I believe this team can rise to the occasion against any team they play. If they could make the postseason, they’d do well.
I’d be tempted to let Chipper rest for a couple of days. Prado can hold it down for a little bit. What good is a tired Chipper playing every day when a rested one will help us out on the days he is in the lineup?
“Medlen said he’ll make adjustments, now he knows you can’t get away with a changeup at the knees and away against Howard, even though that’s the pitch he was trying to throw him. Said he should have stayed down, the way he got ahead with those pitches in the dirt or at the shins.”
The previous statement says it all about the Braves. Do they not know how they should pitch Howard?
Why does Medlin have to find that out on the mound? Doesn’t the catcher (McCann) and Braves staff have a scouting report? Don’t they know,(from all the mistakes they’ve made to him over the years) just like most knowledgeable fans watching at home, that you either throw it in the dirt away from Howard or tie him up inside? It’s either-or, no room for anything away, and hitable, to that big chunk of meat!
“If Lowe returns to form”, if Chipper returns to form, too many key players needing to return to form. RIght now if I’m a Phillie pitcher I’m glad that for at least one AB I don’t have to worry about Diaz driving in a run.
I said last night that whatever so called “book” the Braves have on Howard, they should toss it. Vazquez learned you can’t throw a slider outside corner at the knees. However, Lowe has historically had good luck against Howard by throwing him sliders down and in. I guess the Brave’s pitchers don’t share that kind of info.

What? Always thought it was the pitcher that gave up the deciding runs. Medlen should have been given the loss. Damn, I have just never understood the scoring there.
I understand the argument that “both teams are playing in the same park”, but, there is a problem with that logic.
Ryan Howard plays in that park 81 games a year. It is much easier, and more practical for him to learn how to flick his wrists toward left and loft one into that short porch than it is for Mac and LaRoche to do the same.
I think we saw this reality most clearly back in 2004-5 when we had to play the Astros in the play-offs, and Berkman, in particular, had that short-left field swing down, whereas, it was harder for some of the Braves lefty hitter to adjust their swings to take advantage of the short porch.
Now, to be fair, Howard can sneeze and hit a homer in that park, and he also crushes one out in center, and hit 3 homers in 3 games in TF last week. I realize that he is awesome, and we lack someone of equivalent awesomeness; but, he does have the advantage of swinging in that bandbox 81 games a year, whereas our players do not.
1st – Thank you for showing up last night Tim Lincecum.
2nd – If it gets to the point in the next few years where Chipper plain sucks, hopefully he will man up and retire so we don’t get stuck paying his contract. It becomes voided if he retires.
3rd – Maybe we need to replace the whole coaching staff. Rotten To The Core made a great point. How do we not know how to pitch to Ryan Howard by now. Medlen’s comment suggest that they don’t go over a scouting report.
“Howard, he beat me,” Medlen said. “He just likes getting [his arms] extended…. It’s my first time facing him. I’m make adjustments.”
I think this quote from Medlen is interesting, in light of the theory that the Braves had the advantage in a Medlen v. Moyer match-up. (Also, Medlen had never pitched on this “high school field.”)
That said, Hanson also gave up a homer to Howard; so, it’s hard to dig into this too deeply.
Now I know why you keep suggesting all those crazy ideas to me. You don’t know much about baseball if you can’t figure out why Hanson gets the loss. Hanson gave up a HR to Howard and left the game behind 1 – 0.
Keep studying about baseball, Bozo. You have a long way to go.
I’m about 95% certain that I have identified Sorry To Say But…’s previous avatar (one of them at least), but I don’t feel that it’s my place to disclose same. As a favor to a friend.
Besides, all indications are that we may have just witnessed a swan song.
I wish today was a DGANG……Whaddya wanna bet LaRochy sits this one out but Bobby leaves BMac in the cleanup?
Course, if Church can’t play then Infante will have to play CF, and Prado 2B…or Reid could play center, Infante could play second, Prado could play first, and Ross could catch…
That leaves us with, uh…one lefty in the lineup: GA. But he cann hit lefties pretty good.
I knew when the rain started 6 mins into the game last night that we were in for a loss. *Sigh* I’m getting tired of seeing the same old things happen.
For example, just what in the heck is the purpose of throwing anything to Howard? Do we not walk people on purpose anymore? Why give him the opportunity to hit anything at all? That right there would take care of his ‘homerun hemmorhage’.
All that aside, I do still like our chances in the WC race. We do still have a slim chance there, but the problem then will be if we DO make it into the WC slot for the playoffs, we’ll just go lose in the first round anyway. It never fails….
Geez….287 with a .356 OBP! How come he couldn’t stay in the .290’s for at least another 5 weeks? I’m so sicka the sight of the number .287!! Aaaahhhg!!!
Hopefully, Prado plays first, Kelly plays second, Diaz plays right, GA plays left and Gorecki gets demoted and Barton gets brought up to play center…. Or Reid plays center…
The Phillies seem to find a way to avoid nagging injuries to most key players, the kind that have kept so many Braves out for 3-5 (or more) games at a time.
This season, the Phillies have SIX players who’ve played 121 or more of the team’s 126 games: Jimmy Rollins (121), Shane Victorino (122), Chase Utley (123), Pedro Feliz (124) and Ryan Howard (125).
You want to guess who leads the Braves in games played?
Chipper, with 113. Next is Yunel Escobar, with 110.
I’m just gonna sit here and listen to the rest of this Braves’ strategy session and report back to my coach around 3 PM. Do y’all think I need to take BP today?
I have to admit….I laughed when Howard got hit in the face with that screamer to first that slipped up off his glove. I wish it had knocked his big dumba$$ down!
I’m such a masochist…I wish he’d fall and break something and be unable to finish the season.
Oh, Bobby won’t play Johnson against a lefty! Are you kidding? You’re whole post is actually sarcastic, isn’t it?
I still say Ross should catch. And that has nothing to do with the fact that BMac took an(other) 0 fer last night…just with the way he’s struggled against lefties this year I don’t exactly jump for joy over the prospect of him facing Lee…
Semiball coach? F Wren…..I will see your baseball knowledge and raise you one, no make that two. Regardless you are probably very new to the blog so I won’t go over my three year history for you. Oh yeah and Wren…no more free advice for you dude the least you could have done is bought dinner and drinks. Also how many more times are you gonna let that dumbarse Cox trot Norton out there. Fire the stubborn fool!
Woke up this morning , saw the score 4-2, saw Hanson pitched 2 innings giving up 1 run, no tv no game reports, no line reports, just boxscore. what conclusions would you have drawn. I mean you guys are so friggin smart. I mean a comment without some personal attack is fine. You are probably a bunch of nerds that cut and paste comments from blog and then decide who to attack at some nerd meeting. Enjoy your pitiful blog existence or better yet leave and gain some credibility.
Bobby Cox should sit both LaRoache and Brian McCann tonight but he won’t.
He’s that stubborn. If Bobby would look at logic and stats, this would be the batting order.
1. Infante CF
2. Prado 1B
3. Escobar SS
4. Chipper 3B
5. Diaz RF
6. Johnson 2B
7. Ross C
8. Gorecki LF
9. Pitcher
That way you have as RH as a lineup against a tough LH pitcher like Lee who kills LH hitters in general. You also have the oddity of KJ hitting better against LH pitching, so that works in the Braves favor.
You’ll also have quite the stacked bench for PH (therefore won’t have to resign to using that bum Norton)
B-Mac, Roach, Anderson, Church will all be on the bench available for PH.
Dob…..yep, I understand now. Saw the full boxscore and read reports. Still a tough loss hung on him for sure. Sure don’t see that line on Hanson and figure a loss. Very strange linescore for sure.
No…I was being serious. I know Johnson kills lefties, but Bobby doesn’t, apparently. He’s so hung up on the stupid “lefty-righty” thing sometimes. Yet, even with BMac batting .215 against LHP, he still puts him in the cleanup spot. Heck, I’d consider Diaz in that spot against lefties…
It’s not that we have to platoon BMac, it’s just that with the way he’s struggled against lefties this year, it’s a good idea to give him his days off against the tough LH’er. And Lee is one heckuva tough LH’er.
And who knows…Ross is about due for another homer, isn’t he? (Yeah, just like BMac is due for another double. )
Enough role playing, though it was fun being Ryan H for an hour. I think we all need to think about the pressure most of these players are under, not just the Braves, but all major leaguers. If they don’t cut the mustard, they’re finished. Sometimes the harder you press to perform, the worse the results. Notice the teams that have the looser club houses/benches. ML Baseball is a game. Unfortunately, it’s a business, too.
if i woke up and saw that he got the loss, i would have KNOWN he was trailing when cox pulled him out of the game be it rain or injury…you may have been blogging for 3 years, but you don’t know the game
Couldn’t we platoon Bobby with another manager for a smooth transition?
Bobby could manage day games only..
Heres my post on Bowman’s Blog:
Braves really need better coaches. This guys are very talented, but get into funks all too often, and last I heard, hitting coaches are a dime a dozen. Maybe, move Bobby to bench coach and make Eddie Perez the manager. Fire Chino, Sniker, and TP. Then find replacements for those previously fired. Since Bobby is a player manager like Dusty Baker, lets keep him as the bench coach.
I’m only keeping Chipper in the third spot because I believe that Bobby putting Johnson at second base tonight is 100x more likely than him ever removing Chipper from that spot. Matter of fact, I think BMac getting moved out of the cleanup spot is more likely than Chipper getting moved from the 3rd spot.
Besides, Chipper’s got an above .300 AVG against lefties this month, I think…
there is no way that you can keep bobby on as a bench coach, i think it’d hard for next manager if bobby even worked in the organization….when bobby leaves it needs to be a clean cut so the new guy won’t feel pressure, because despite our opinions of cox, the new guy will face comparisons, especially early

A couple of things this morning.

Think about that.
