Were I running the team (thankfully I’m not), I’d probably let Heyward open 2010 with the big club and platoon Church and Diaz in left if I can’t get a big bopper for left. If I can, I keep Heyward in the minors, and platoon Church and Diaz in right, and promote Heyward in June. Jordan Schafer opens in AAA as insurance, and is promoted as needed or if he earns it (with McLouth moved to left)
I re-sign Soriano and let Gonzo walk and hopefully recoup a draft pick. My opening-day bullpen would be: Soriano, Moylan, Medlen, O’Flaherty, Logan, and Acosta/Valdez. Craig Kimbrel opens in AAA and is promoted in June barring setbacks and such.
I offer LaRoche a two-year deal. He won’t take it, so my plan B would be to try to swing a deal for Konerko. Plan C is to play Prado at 1st and Kelly at 2nd and hope like hell Freeman is ready by June.
This is using my limited amount of info about the Braves’ payroll situation and the availabily of players via trade, as well as my scouts’ opinions of several key players (Freeman being one of them). If I had that information, my plan would likely be different (and I suppose if I was to give a complete answer I’d go over to Cots and do a payroll breakdown as well but I’m not gonna do that tonight).
With that, I feel like I’ve addressed holes at 1B and LF/RF adequately enough to be a playoff-caliber team. If I can get a big bat for LF, the team is a threat to go deep into the playoffs. If I do that and Heyward is a beast, we’re really good. Oh yeah, I trade KK.
I know this game is big for our playoff chances but for someone reason with the way the phillies bullpen has been they probably feel more pressure because they seem to at least be a sure lock for the playoffs and expect to do big things. That said, Come on LaRoche.
We have conflicting reports on Norton’s status. I’m hoping Scott Boras doesn’t represent Norty. We need him, even Cox likes him. If we pay Lowe 15MM, we should sign Norton at all cost.
I hate victorino. hold em here and we still have a shot with lidge even though the bottom of the lineup is due in the 9th. thank god bobby cant bring icostya in to pitch. If I see anybody but Gonzo here my head may explode.
You don’t take a 3-1 fastball that gets a lot of the plate. He’s a major league hitter and he put a very good swing on it.
Just missed it. It happens. If he squares it up, which he almost did, it’s 6-4.
First of all, come up with an original name. I mean, you had to add a 2 to an already existing name.
Second, did I say that Bobby was a mastermind and deserved to be manager of the decade? No, I just asked for you to explain what Bobby has done to cost us the game so far. Decide to pitch to Howard with Utley already on first? Yeah okay.
“At least he made the pitcher work and swung at a strike, unlike CHIPPER”
It was a good pitch to swing at for Adam, just didn’t hit it as well as I thought when it came off the bat. Chipper’s at bat this inning was bad. I know the guy is struggling but I still expect batter at bats even if they are not yielding the results he’s use to. Agree with what Joe Simpson said about that at bat. His last at bat against Moyer was pretty good just didn’t get anything to show for it.
Hey at least its no homer, thats a victory for us.
Chipper is quietly turning into a cancer to the team. It’s not like it’s happening all at once, just over the course of time he’s digging his team into the ground…and laughing with Rollins about a fake injury in the process. I don’t want to read another Jones qoute, “we’ve got to start hitting with runners on”.
Joe S., yeah, but Howard still has a bale pepper nose, so….
Steve sounds reasonable, but I don’t see the improvement in the offense and I sure don’t see a deeper better pen. Either way, what you propose is not revenue-neutral so where you going to get the money from? Trading Javy is going to be enough. If I could only hold on to one between Gonzo/Soriano, it will be the guy who will take the least money. But I would prefer having a lefty given the lineups in the East. I would also like to add Qualls to the pen. Now if you could get Qualls, Konerko, and a leadoff guy then I’d be happy. I don’t think you have to trade Lowe and Chipper to do that, but one of them, plus maybe KK has to go to have enough salary to get all that done.
You are right. He has not done a whole lot to cost us THIS game. However, continually using Norton EVERY game especially in clutch situations deserves major criticism. Add this to other idiotic managerial decisions like continually using Corky Miller, Woody Woodward, Chris Reitsma, Jeff Bennett, Blaine Boyer, and Manny Acosta to name just a few.
Why oh why does McCann keep setting up on the outside against Howard?
Has he not been paying attention? Has McDowell not seen what has happened to all of those pitches that let Howard extend his arms?
Just one time. Pitch him inside. Just once. And see what happens. Could the result be any worse?
