Jeff R: “Wren needs to make a run at retaining LaRoche’s services. Two years and an option?”
I agree, but highly unlikely LaRoche signs for less than 4 years, + option. The Braves should probably do that deal if reasonable, and worry about Freeman later, or package him in a trade for an outfielder maybe.
Picture this: Summer of 1974 at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Last day of our 9 month long training. We all march back. (50-60) young airmen getting ready to head out to their duty assignments. Our First Sergeant was getting ready to do a final inspection and release us for good.
Our student leader for the entire squadron, whom I went on to serve with at Travis AFB a few weeks later, had sneaked up to our barracks room, where he had positioned his two large speakers at each window of our room. He turned on, as loud as it would go, Alice Cooper’s School’s Out, then hustled down the back stairs.
You couldn’t hear yourself think, it was so loud. My buddy Kevin was what we called the “red rope” student leader. The first shirt was so ticked off, he busted Kevin and caused him to miss his flight the next morning back to Oklahoma for some leave.
Everytime I hear that song, I smile and remember that day with fondness.
Folks have reasons for their political beliefs. It would really hurt if somebody like RHR stopped liking me because of mine. I have good reason for believing what I believe; others, with different beliefs, have good reasons too. Most of my friends are polar opposites to me politically. They haven’t gone through some of the things I’ve gone through, and vice versa. We all understand that, it’s cool.
My twin nephews were murdered a few years back. A wavering capital punishment proponent beforehand, it completely solidified my stance. That’s how circumstances and life experience can form a person’s thinking. Folks have personal reasons for their beliefs. I hope nobody holds mine against me…
AndyC: “You guys and gals realize that if the Braves had taken care of the lowly Padres in the first two games of the series we would be sitting all alone in second place in the wildcard standings just 2.5 games out?”
Nope; would have had identical record with San Fran.
Wow dogsbrekky…I was kidding. I remember my kindergarten teacher would sometimes hit us with a yardstick, but after that, picturing a teacher using any kind of physical discipline seemed unheard of.
Spent the past hour in line at baggage services in Philly and on hold with Delta baggage services (imagine that).
Yes, Delta did the seemingly impossible: Lost a bag on a direct flight from Atlanta to Philadelphia, after I checked in more than 1 hour before the flight.
If we switched blogs right before game time and didn’t let Paul know, how many 1000s of cut and paste posts would he make before he realized he was the only one there? And will he bring the server down when he tries to repost all the garbage?
I have good reason for believing what I believe; others, with different beliefs, have good reasons too.
Exactly! Which is exactly why it should be left off the blog! Ain’t no one here gonna convince someone to believe differently, and well, if you’re trying to take jabs at Paul Dentz, it ain’t working. If anything, he’ll have another meltdown and he’ll seriously insult another innocent bystander like mitchie-san. I too want him to apologize to all our servicemen and women, but we know that ain’t happening (shame). Let it go, and bash him for his baseball posts–like I said before, it should give you more than enough material.
Had the same thing happen to me with Southwest when I returned to Denver to get married. The bag had my wedding suit. Fortunately, another SW flight originating in Raleigh came in two hours later with my bag aboard. And while we waited, the vendors at DIA got about $40 in food and drinks we would have spent somewhere else.
It’s actually very easy process to get LaRoche to start hitting early in the season. When he drives up to Lake Buena Vista in Spring training, Frank, John and Bobby greet him and ask where he went hunting during the allstar break. He gets into midseason mode immediately and by the time he realizes what’s really going on, he’s raking for the next 6 months. Quite easy.
I know you really do care – deep down you do so I’ll answer that question. I slept well. The best sleep I’ve ever had.

What’s up Braves fans? Well, you folks ready to watch a game in front of an actual crowd tonight? Should be crazy. Pedro vs. Hanson. Classic spring/winter match up.
The Braves lineup should be able to handle Pedro. It’ll be interesting to see how Hanson does. That’s a tough Phillies line up.
Speaking of “crowds” – there wasn’t 1,000 people at the Mets/Marlins game yesterday. Granted it was a day game – but come on. Selig keeps talking big but there are some markets that are just a waste of time. Starting with Miami.
DAP: “what makes you say this? contracts for guys not named teixiera and sabathia are down quite a bit lately.”
Very true DAP but then you have Furcal, Milton Bradley, and Casey Blake all signing for 3 years and I think LaRoche is a step above those 3. Also his 1st time as FA I believe, and I doubt he will take less than 4.
Note many of those signing 1-2 year deals are much older than LaRoche; seems as if the average age for FA (except the 2 you mentioned) last year was unusually high?
We will not collapse like thouse lousy mets did a couple years ago. Our pitching is much improved, and well everyone knows about our little offense we have up here.
DOB, Delta did that to me and hubby one time on a direct flight to Flint, MI. Our bag didn’t even make it on the plane. When it didn’t show up on the belt, we called and found out that it was still sitting in Atlanta. catching up on blog reading from last night after loggin’ off. yikes – what a turnaround the blog took last night. Tone went from jovial and fun to just plain nasty – it’s amazing what one idiot can do to this board.
And did you see the weather in Philly for this weekend? You’ll be dreaming of my dry underwear and hairspray during those long rain delays. Heh. Heh. Heh.
The blog is a different animal. The majority of my friends in the real world, know how I feel about a myriad of things. I don’t disrespect their beliefs, nor do they disrespect mine. I can tell a good friend to get his head out of his azz, and he is not offended.
On a blog, it is a different animal. Our relationships are so limited, which makes it so much easier to hurt feelings or have our feelings hurt. The anonymity of the blog also allows us to be “bullies” and not have to pay the price of being such.
I am still very dissappointed in the lack of control of the blog. I let my frustrations come between me and some of my “friends” on the blog, for that I am truly sorry. I was trying to make a point, and in some small way, I guess I have.
I would like to apologize to all those who have been offended by me trying to make this point on the blog. In the end, it really doesn’t matter. I think it’s like spitting into a river. Nothing really changed. Nothing was changed, and only I looked silly.
As I have told others, my ability to blog is going to be severly curtailed after this weekend. I will check back in on my friends and for sure, I will still listen to all the games I possibly can.
Again folks, please accept my sincere apology if I have offended you. I am not changing my beliefs, and I still think there are some things going on that I would love to talk with you folks about, but I understand you really don’t want to hear it. I’m OK with that.
We will not collapse like thouse lousy mets did a couple years ago. Our pitching is much improved, and well everyone knows about our little offense we have up here
You know I’m a Braves fan…right?
Also, a little spell check doesn’t hurt anyone…
those guys you mentioned, signed pretty early. furcal and blake signed in december, and bradley signed in early january, so that before the market really went south and guys like bobby abreu started getting offered 1 year $5mil.
i honestly dont think laroche has a chance to get more than 3 years anywhere.
See, even rival fans like Anders love DOB. Love is a strong word for someone I’ve never met, but if he gives me all the Braves I can handle, I guess I do love him. I love you Dave!
What do the Braves have to do to win the WC? JUst keep winning right? Everything will take care of it’s self. But what kind of numbers are we talking about? The Rockies are sitting right now at 72-56, they have 34 games left, if they play 2 games better than .500 the rest of the way they win 90 games. THat seems to be a sure thing barring a collapse of sorts(hey we can all wish right?) the question is will they go over 90 and if so by how much? If they go 20-14 they win 92, that would make us have to go 25-10 to tie, 26-9 to win. THat’s asking for an amazing run. If the Rockies go 19-15 then we have to go 24-11 to tie. If per chance the Rockies only went 18-16 then we would still need to go 23-12 to tie.THose 2 losses to the PAdres were killer. I believe we have the pitching to do it. Do we have the hitting and will the Rockies come back down to earth and allow us back in if we do our part?
Hahnson is due for a rough up tonight; not pedro. Pedro is like the energizer bunny. He keeps going and going and going. Kind of like the new lithium battery advertisments. Not only does he keep going and going and going but at an accellerated ultra competitive level that the Braves are sure to experience tonight.
Shamus, Southern Hope, others who apparently wear the same clothes and shoes every day on week-long trips and rotate your underwear:
Thanks for the tips. But you really don’t need to tell me how to travel. Been doing it for a couple decades now for work. I’m not That Guy who tries to stuff a too-large bag into the overhead, for one thing. For another, most of our trips are 7-10 days. You don’t carry toiletries for 7-10 days, not to mention clothes for 7-10 days, in one bag that fits in an overhead.
That is, unless you take three shirts and rotate them, and wear the same shoes ever day, and don’t take workout gear, etc. Sorry, Shamus, not that guy. I’m wearing seven different shirts on a seven-day trip, and at least 3 pairs of pants. And I’m not buying toiletries in every city, and worrying about having 3 oz or less of saline, etc, etc.
Not worth it. I’ve lost ONE BAG in three years, my man. And in 15 years of covering ball, perhaps 5 bags have been delayed. Every time, they eventually show up by the end of the day. Every time.
And the wait is usually 10 minutes at baggage claim.
Sorry, but not worth it for me to be That Guy who travels for a week with a carry on. Maybe that works for you, not for me.
We pack for a week or more. Not overnight, like most business travelers.
Philliephan, Chipper is about to explode, unfortunately for your Phills. He hit the cover off the ball the last few nights, so watch out. That’s how the great hitters are…just when you think they’re dead—BOOM, they go on a tear.
Remember folks, have all your egg sac remarks ready for first inning! Last night’s first inning egg sac discussion led to loadsa runs!! With egg sacs the catalyst, paired with our dynamite pitching, WE CAN’T F’n LOSE!
OK, kinda slow on here so I’ll share an Anders lost luggage story. Me and a colleague are flying down to Alabama to meet with some clients. The plan is we’ll leave the office to fly down early in the AM and play a round of golf by mid afternoon with them. We get there and both of our luggage bags are lost. All our golf gear is in the bags. We’re still in the clothes we wore to the office. We have to go to the club, buy shirts, shorts, socks, golf shoes and gloves etc. All while the guys we’re gonna play with are waiting at the first tee. About $350 each later we’re ready to go. There’s 6 of them and us two. It’s a nice Trent Jones course so it runs us about $900 for the round for the 8 of us. We’re buying. My colleague tees off with three of them and off they go. My foursome steps up to the tee box and there’s lightning and a crack of thunder. They immediately shut down the course. It stays closed for the rest of the day. They don’t refund for the golf but will give us a credit which we promptly hand over to our guests.
$1600 later and I haven’t even hit a ball. We did have a good time at the bar. Oh yeah, my bag was waiting for me at the hotel we were staying at by the time we got there that evening.
Morale of the story? Thank god for expense acounts!

Another big series with Philly – ho hum – these days it seems.
But alas we’re only 4 1/2 games back with Colorado/SanFran goin at it this weekend as well.
I think we knock Pedro around for 5 or 6 runs tonight…he’s due for a rough up and so is Cliff Lee…guys’ gotta lose sometime…
We have good pitching lined up for this series again…It will be interesting to see how Hanson reacts to facing Philly in a hostile environment.

Have a great weekend!

I always said Ben Stiller could play DOB in “The DOB Story”. Now DOB has the whole lost bag thing going that Stiller had in “Meet The Parents”.
A weekend in Philly with no luggage. Borrowing clothes from Bowman, chewing nicorette gum because his favorite cigars are lost – ok you get the idea.

Shamus, Southern Hope, others who apparently wear the same clothes and shoes every day on week-long trips and rotate your underwear:Thanks for the tips.
