The Phillies are looking to put a hurting on Charlie Morton tonight. Already 1 run in, runners on 1st and 3rd, one out, Jason Werth up.

Morton looks like he is throwing junk.

Wayne in Utah........
.298 is an off month for a 2B?
with 10 RBI in 37 AB for the 1st 15 days of august before he was removed from the game on the 16th I believe?

In reading this blog, I wonder if most of the bloggers on this blog are white conservatives who do not like minority players. The political rhetoric and the favoritism shown to white players with average abilities makes me wonder. No problem either way ...just askin.

Shamus Thacker (August 27th, 2009 8:08 am): "Random: ' "Winning breeds 'chemistry'. NOT vice versa.'

"THEN you say:

“ ' “ Chemistry” is a post facto rationalization, created from whole cloth solely to hang a story on. 50-50 hindsight. Mythology for the masses.

" 'That’s all. Just hocus pocus.'

Random, can’t have it both ways. YOU sir, are and idiot!"

Ain't no two ways there -- just one way. Don't discount the doubt-quotes I put around "chemistry".

So-called "chemistry" results from winning -- it follows winning, it comes after. That is "post".

And it is "so-called" because it is in the eye of the beholder, it is subjective, it exists only in peoples minds. It is made up after the fact to make a pleasant story about the winners.

"Chemistry" is a made-up quality attributed to winners after they have won, not before.

I think that man in SC who won the power ball should buy up some land near the Kennedy compound, and put a single wide on it.

he will probably not get the grief for a bad month that KJ did for his bad two months. KJ actually had a bad April, a good May, and a REAL bad June.

See...no. KJ has proven to be a streaky hitter, not just in April and June of this season, but of every season he's worn a Braves jersey. KJ is also a kid from Texas making millions, has a beautiful wife and is expecting his first child, and, as far as I know, his entire family is living comfortably in the good ol' US of A. I'd say everything looks rosy in KJ land, slumps be damned.

Martin, on the other hand, is a first time starter making the league minimum. His entire family, as far as I know, is living in Venezuela. Most recently, his mom and brother returned there after their visas expired and, by all accounts, he is extremely worried about them. The stress of his family situation most likely contributed to the headaches and dizziness he suffered, which, most likely contributed to his decline in August.

So you're right, I, for one, am not going to rip Marteeeeen for having an off month in the midst of all that. Everyone who has ever played the game has been thru slumps, most of them don't have to have an excuse but in this case, I do think Martin is allowed to slump a little considering whats going on in his life.

Long last drive for Teddy. I was 8 when JFK was assasinated. I remember the constant TV coverage and actually saw Lee Harvey Oswald get drilled by Jack Ruby on live TV.

Why does this stuff draw me to it?? Heck, I didn't care too much for the guy or his politics when he was alive??? Can't seem to turn off the tube today.

DAP and N8, I think Chipper and Escobar may be pretty close from all the evidence I can find. I think the data looks like it may slightly favor Escobar but it's pretty close. Could be because Escobar isn't as tall so Chipper can take fewer strides to get around the bases.

Chipper has 4 steals to Escobar's 3. Chipper has 1 caught stealing to Escobar's 3. Chipper has one more triple (2-1) and Escobar is slightly ahead in doubles (22-19). Escobar has 8 infield hits to Chipper's 5. Escobar's infield hit percentage is 4.5 to Chipper's 3.4 (infield hits per groundballs). Chipper's speed score is 3.7 to Escobar's 3.1 (do a web search for info on that stat as it's pretty complex).

But does any of this necessarily mean the Chipper is vastly more valuable than Escobar? I don't think so. Escobar is still a very good to great hitter that is going to outperform most shortstops in the majors. And as each player ages, Escobar is going to outperform shortstops by a wider margin than Chipper outperforms thirdbasemen. Speed is a very small and sometimes overrated factor in baseball.
