JJ isn’t as good as he’s perceived to be, but he’s also not as good as he’s going to be.
At 23 and already able to pitch like this (not just throw, but pitch), he could be unbelievable by the time he’s 27 or 28.

I’d appreciate it if you’d lay off the caps lock, but I’ll agree that at this point, every loss hurts. Easier being the chased than the chaser, if you know what I mean.
Wasn’t that long ago that the typical Braves team would cruise into May or early June and then play something like .800 ball for three months. By the time Labor Day arrived, they’d be so far in front that they were worried about being sharp for the playoffs. Man, I miss those days.

Not always. Some pitchers aren’t as projectable and therefore never get that much better. Or at least their stuff doesn’t get much better.

efrim, 6.5 k/9 and 2BB/9 isnt good? the BAA is a little higher than id like it to be, but .249 isnt horrible…especially when your not giving up a ton of homers.
I think his career BB/9 is 3.3 and his K/9 is 6.4. I think that K/9 is above average, but probably only slightly. Hey, I think he’s really good. Keeps the ball in the ballpark, although he doesn’t increase a ton of grounders. A very good starter.

It doesn’t seem like we hear very much (outside of the fanbase) about Jurrjens, and I guess it’s because he’s not that exciting. Not a fireballer, not emotional, not a cheerleader. But I think that’s why the future is bright for him – the dude knows how to pitch, and at an incredibly young age.

efrim, ive got his career walk rate UNDER 2BB/9. the stuff i cited above are his numbers this year…2nd full season in the majors at age 23. im just trying to figure out why people are saying he isnt as good as he is perceived to be. it looks like to me he is already a top of the rotation starter and getting better.

I count at least 9 players there. The Braves are not gonna call up anywhere near 9 players in Sept if for no other reason than not to pay them all a month of MLB minimun pay.that’s ignoring the fact that they have never called up that many players even when more moneyed;and Bobby doesn’t want 9 players. I’d guess 5 max- a catcher for certain and maybe 2 position players and 2 pitchers. maybe not even that many. Fun to guess though.

That would push us up to 33 players, about Bobby’s limit. If someone other than HEYWARD gets the call among the OF’s, then maybe HEYWARD moves up to help the AAA post season effort. This also might delay Canizares or Diory. Maybe Chris Burke gets the call instead of Diory, but then you have to DFA two players, because Hudson will make you DFA one also. And maybe Bobby adds one more pitcher, but I don’t know. That’s an awful lot of players, and the 33 would be 19 position guys and 14 pitchers. But this is fun; we’ll know for sure soon.

Prado and Anderson both in lineup. Anderson said he feels fine, ready to go. Prado didn’t sound quite as confident before BP, said he wanted to see how it felt taking full-effort swings, infield, etc, trying to simulate energy level of game. He’s out there now taking infield.
Church said he’s playing tomorrow, feels fine hitting but still had a little twinge when he rotated making throw….
McLouth did some 75-percent effort sprints, felt good. Will go on rehab Friday, should be ready to play next week when eligible.

We sit 4 1/2 games behind the Rockies. Considering how the Rockies are playing, it may take at least 28-10 to get it done. If we go 28-10, we need the Rockies to go 23-14 (Rockies have 37 games left). We split the season series with the Rockies, keep that in mind. 28-10 anyone?? Or will it take 30-8? Who knows?

I like this lineup. If Prado can stay healthy at second I can see us scoring a lot of runs this week. One thing you have to think about when talking about Sept 1 call ups**
Gwinnett is in the playoffs. They ahve a shot at the first year champoinship. Mississippi is 1o games out –2 games from elimination.
They will need to bring a few of them up to AAA to fill in, but I think they will bring up only what they REALLY need, so that the playoff team is intact

If the Braves are within 5 games of the division or the wild card on Sept. 1, Gwinnett may have to make do with a few players missing. I cannot imagine a major-league club harming its postseason prospects merely to give its AAA team a better chance of winning a title.
As DOB and others have noted, Cox doesn’t like calling up guys and have them rust on the bench, but with so many guys dinged up, you can bet we’ll see Sammons, Hudson, Carlyle, and maybe Brandon Jones (if McLouth has any setbacks) up ASAP.

I have next to no use for a .240 hitter and that is what he has averaged over the last 3 years.and much of that’s in the PCL which is a hitters league for the most part. Add crappy defense on top of that, and mediocre is the nicest adjective that I can think of.

If we don’t get the sweeps we SHOULD get and then we’re swept by somebody down the road, those non-sweeps could come back to haunt us. It’s hard to say ANY series SHOULD be swept, because luck plays such a huge role in all things baseball. A bounce here, a bounce there, and a sweep, or even a series, can be lost. Against anybody….

I was just saying that they won’t call everyone up just to get to 40, and that the ones they call up can easily be filled with AA players that won’t be needed for any playoffs in Mississippi. That the ones called up will be utilized and nto called up to sit around. It;’s even better that the are less than 45 minutes away and can be on the 40 man yet help out in Gwinnett unless we really need them.
