Jurr – so…you’re just going to work and live on your own in GA for a year while waiting to apply to UGA? There are some good schools in IL you can get started on your degree during that year you’d just be loafing around georgia and then when you finish school you can move wherever you want. You can go to a school in IL far enough away from your hometown that it won’t seem like you’re at home, you know?

A SWEEP IS A MUST,

Yes, it is. If the Braves are serious about making the playoffs, then they can’t afford to lose ONE game to the god awful Padres. Chances are the Rockies won’t sweep the Dodgers so if we sweep then we’ll pick up at least one game before the weekend series with the Phillies. Anyone who’s just satisfied with 2 out of 3 against the Padres, you have NO sense of urgency.

I humbly disagree with assuming hte Latos v. Jurrjens pitiching match-up tomight automatically favors the Braves. Consider the last time Latos faced the braaves (on Aug 3):
7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Jurrjens has not faced the Padres this year.

Brief scouting report for the denizens, before I head to the ballpark:

Mat Latos is 0-2 with a 14.09 ERA and .417 opponents’ average in his past two starts, after going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA and .186 opponents’ average in his previous four. The winning streak included an Aug. 3 game against the Braves when he allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings.

This will be the eighth game (all starts) for the rookie, who was roughed up by the Cardinals and Cubs in his past two games. Adam LaRoche is 1-for-2 with a homer against Latos.

Braves Realist, it’s not what we think the Braves chances are of winning the wildcard, nor are surveys of that nature ever a scientific representation of users who’ve viewed the website, it only represents those who’ve taken the time to vote (who I’m guessing are mostly Bravo fans – so why wouldn’t they think they’d make the postseason?). How about this time we don’t discuss a sweep? It always starts this way, we talk about how the Braves have to sweep so and so otherwise the season is over. Then, we end up losing the first game and we proclaim the season is over and Bobby Cox messed everything up. Then, we win the next two and we’re riding high again. So, this time we won’t even talk about it.

I hope the Braves come out stronger today than they have the last few opening games of series. I think it had become a vicious cycle. Lose the first game of the 3 game series. The 2nd game then becomes must win because if we lose that one then we lose the series. The Braves did a great job of bearing down and taking the game 2’s. Same thing for game 3. Following the 2 hard fought games to win a series I think the Braves relaxed a little when they went to a new series and then started the cycle over

you are all cox applogistsHow is my statement about the Braves being unable to afford ONE loss to the Padres not true?

because you dont have all the information.

if the braves dont sweep the padres, but then go on to win every game vs. the phillies this season, then losing one game against the padres here wont matter that much. you dont know whats going to happen the rest of the season, so the ultimatum the we MUST win all these games is premature.

it is important to win every game, but losing one dont mean we are finished at this point, because again, we dont know what else is going to happen.

"You all are Cox apologists"

DAP,

IDIOT, we play the Phillies after the Padres, who we just lost a series to. There is NO EXCUSE for the Braves not to sweep the Padres. The Padres are one of the worst teams in baseball. The Rockies are not showing ANY signs of letting up. Don’t you think a sweep would give the Braves momentum going up to Philly for the weekend? Maybe you don’t know that there’s only 38 games left? That’s not a lot of time to make up 4 1/2 games you IDIOT, so the Braves need to start sweeping teams, not just being COMPLETELY satisfied with winning 2 of 3.

No worries with Rockies / Giants. Still 4 back in the loss column…all that matters. Rockies have Dodgers and @ Giants this week. We have Padres then go to Philly. Really need to sweep Padres and try and get 2 out of 3 this weekend. Somehow.

Steve from OH…I have to say that I think Sheehan is way off here…Dealing Jurrjens? I would have to think that is very, very, unlikely…Jair is 23 years old, already has 26 wins in the big leagues (and winning % near .600), has a sub 3.00 ERA putting him in the Top 10 in the NL, is very advanced for such a young pitcher in terms of command of fastball and multiple secondary pitches and ability to use in any count, and he’s very cost controlled for the next few years…

This is one of the future building blocks for our rotation (obviously along with Hanson)…so if a starter is going to be moved, I think we’ll clearly be looking at one of the significantly larger near expiring contracts…to where we could apply the current salary impact to a corner (OF or 1B) bat…

DAP,

Again, if the Braves are serious about making the playoffs, we cannot afford to lose to the Padres. That doesn’t mean if we lose, we won’t make it. All it means is that each loss is making it more difficult to make the playoffs.

You can say “I can’t afford to lease a car”, but if you lease it, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will go bankrupt, it just means you will have a difficult time paying for it.

Will do JJ. Um, but he does have to finish his senior year of high school so we might have to put this off for a year or so. Unless you want to go to Ghettocreek, of course.

So are the Mets going to finish the season with any of the position players and starting pitchers they had at the beginning of the season? I feel a little bad for them. But only a little.

DOB,

We first heard about Shafer’s wrist injury not long after he went to the minors in early June. At the time, didn’t he said the injury did not affect his swing and did not contribute to his struggles at the plate?

Now, in the article Carroll wrote he says: “When I look back on it, I feel bad because maybe I hurt the team because I tried to play with it not being 100 percent,”

Was he lying before? Do this make him look like a untruthful player? Add this on top of his claim that he was suspended for hanging out with the wrong crowd.

noliethe guy has hit .230 something in his last 1500 AAA ABs after 8-9 MiLB experience. He doesn’t even make it as high as mediocre, and that’s hitting, he is an atrocious defender. We got the best 34 ABs of his live.

i dont think so. he had a bad year in AAA thrown in there, but his overall number in AAA are a .252 avg and a .807OPS, which isnt mediocre. he is what he is…low average, low, OBP, good power. best 34 ABs of his life? maybe, but his numbers in 34 ABs in atlanta were super-star-ish, so thats understandable.

I don’t think we should get rid of JJ either, just posting the question/answer. I agree with Sheehan that JJ is not as good as he’s perceieved to be (his peripherals suggest he’s about a 3.50 ERA kinda guy). I’d be interested to know what his K/9 and BB/9 have been since the ASB and since, say…June 1. DOB, can you give us a hand on that?

A good draft recap and a table ranking the 1st-round draftees by signing bonus. #7? Shelby Miller.
