Top to bottom we are solid and thats even with Derek Lowe struggling who while he is not an Ace is still a solid top of the rotation starter.

Lowe is 25th among SP in FIP, 2nd among SP in GB%, 3rd in GB/FB, 34th in WAR. He’s a no. 2 getting paid like a no. 2 (his estimated worth has been about 12.5MM/year so far…could easily get to 15MM with a few solid starts).

True ace starters get paid upwards of 18-20MM in free agency (see: Johan Santana, CC Sabathia, Jake Peavy, Carlos Zambrano). No. 2 starters get paid in the 13-17MM dollar range on the free agent market. See: Lowe, Derek, Buehrle, Mark and Burnett, AJ.

(Of course, there is also Barry Zito, but we’ll call him an outlier or just “Brian Sabean is stupid”)
