In the history of sports broadcasting has a home team announcer ever said of an opponent “The guy hit a ball UP IN THE STRIKE ZONE, BUT then again about 50% of the pitches in a MLB game are UP IN THE STRIKE ZONE. A HUGE majority of these pitches are taken or produce an out, so we don’t mention that they were UP IN THE STRIKE ZONE.” I know it will be a futile wait, but I can hope.
If you watch the game tonight count the number of pitches UP IN THE STRIZE ZONE and just remember a hanging curve ball is the equivalent of Chip Caray getting a job because of his last name.
No, we just came to gain an understand of how sardines feel, and to see how much sweat we can produce in three hours. To enjoy three hours without a cig. To either pee in our clothing or walk a half-mile for the honor. To possibly be yapped upon, or to accidentally yap on someone yourself. To possibly be tasered and gang-mauled by constables cause galfriend has purse fulla liquor and doobs. To have world’s first 7-foot Irish redhead, with huge permed afro, standing directly in front of me. Then, to be arrested, beaten, tasered, and afforded prospect of near-future gang-rape, for blowing through Van Wert stop sign on way home.
Yeah, I have that with my favorite pitchers, too (JJ’s totally my favorite). And I remember in ‘06 when Chuck James got his first loss–Cody Ross hit 2 solo homers off him and the Braves lost 2-1. I’ve despise that guy ever since.
Oh and I hate Shane Victorino, and I know you know why…
Yeah. Up until July 27, 2008, I despised him because of those “great plays” and such (oh, and SBs, too…I despise any opposing player who steals a base), but since the 6th inning on that Sunday it’s been a much deeper repugnance…
Braves70, Larry has been injured crawling out of a bed in a 5 Star Hotel, he has been injured when a batting cage attacked him and I STILL believe one day he will be injured while engaged in coitus–Do you really think it’s a good idea to be anywhere near this guy with a gun in his hand. He would probably make Dick Cheney look like Annie Oakley.
Well all that stuff you guys have given as excuses for last nights attendance are excatly what Frenchy was alluding to and also the reason Liberty can’t spend the dough many on here would like them to. Apparently the payback isn’t there. Folks down that way would rather watch high school football on Friday night than the Braves.
Nothing wrong with that mind you – just the facts.

It does make me wonder why but then I think, nevermind, any time I’ve ever watched a southern sports show you get college football and the NFL shoved in your face. So it’s no wonder younger people overlook the Braves. Like I wrote last night… that Sports Night show on peachtree. Their number one headline was the Flacons training camp that seemed to go on and on. Forget that the Braves are in a playoff race.
I’m going to ask you a SERIOUS question. If Larry “Chipper” Jones was not the 3rd greatest switch hitter in Major League history and a sure Hall of Famer would ANYONE on this Blog REALLY want anything to do with the man?/ Be honest. Pretend you have been injected with truth serum or that you will be water boarded if you lie— Does ANYONE invite this guy over for dinner?? Look inward. Tell the truth! It’s bad to lie!!

Exactly! At Wrigley Field, about 90% of people there go because its a hot spot. It makes me so mad. I’d rather be accompanied by 21,999 other people that go there because they’re baseball/Braves fans, than with the 40K that go to Wrigley…
KC – Any lineup with Johnson starting at second sucks. He is a bench player now and plays with no heart so let it go. I do agree Roach should bat fourth and so does everyone else on here pretty much. Funny how the fans know what will work and Bobby catches on two months later. Stubborn old man.

I really RESPECT Jones as a GREAT player–maybe not as much now—but really if he played for another team What Would You Think Of Him?? And I’m not talking about not liking him because of the damage he did against you with a bat. Just PURELY as a human being, what would your reaction be to Larry “Chipper” Jones?/ I’m trying to get you guys to see that you may have lived vicariously through the tremendous hitting exploits of someone who you would totally dismiss if his father had not taught him how to switch hit.
Lou my answer would have to be NO. I have never really been a big fan of Chipper and loved it when Smoltz called him out a couple of years ago for always being injured. I guess if I had $20,000 to blow, he would have me for dinner though.
Lou Vales-
Yes because he is still batting better then some of the younger hitters in the NL.
Steve from OH-
I dont know what your hatred for Infante is but he has clearly outplayed Kelly this year, thus he deserves the playing time he is getting.
An observation….Why….in the wide, wide world of sports….when called on to sac bunt….do people attempt to bunt pitches that are waaaay out of the strike zone?? It ’s like they lose all perspective on the strike zone when they square around to bunt…I’m talkin’ eye-high….ankle-low….etc…
Observation #2….I STILL haven’t gotten over that weak-azz at bat by Chipper in the 9th inning last night….
As to Chipper, my question is if he is playing hurt, Why? I have never understood why a coach would play anyone hurt (if they are not being productive) no matter how big a star they have been. It is not helping the team. I thought putting the team first and winning was the goal. The last few games Chipper has missed, we have won. I am not bashing Chipper, but whose fault is it? Is Chipper being selfish? Is the coach being stupid? If you’re not getting the job done because of a slump, OK. But if its because you are playing hurt and it is hurting the team, Do us a favor and take a rest.
I’d rather be accompanied by 21,999 other people that go there because they’re baseball/Braves fans, than with the 40K that go to Wrigley…(Jurrjens4NLCY)
So now you’re claiming Braves fans to be more rabid than Cubs fanson the whole? Oh boy. Perhaps Steve Bartman will pop into the old blog and give us his thoughts on this?
TnBrian, That is fair. I would ask you to name other players in baseball who have EVER come across in such a boring and arrogant way? I’ve never met Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, John Rocker, Jim Leyland and a few others and YET i bet you would agree that the opinion I have formed is pretty accurate. Do you agree?? i just want you guys to think.
I’ve followed the Tigers since 1956 and last year when they had ego maniacal Pudge(now “Slim” after the juicing stopped), gary Sheffield and Jim Leyland treating journalists like SCUM–I finally said Enough Is Enough!! i evolved to the point where I’m not going to root for the name on front of the jerseuy when i have no respect for surname on the back. Is that so crazy to comprehend.
Now i really must get out and enjoy Buckhead, go To Houston’s (arguably the Best chain restaurant in America) and get ready to verbally harangue Nick “hamstrung’ Johnson as he sits on the bench, seemingly in perpetuity.
keylargo: A 74 mph fastball will travel the 45 feet from mound to home in LL in the same amount of time a 99 mph fastball will travel the 60′ 6″ in MLB.”"
A batter has the same reaction time to a 74-mph pitch from 45-feet, as to a 99-mph one from 60′ 6″.
Jurrjens4NLCY-
So be it but he still is one of the best switch hitters or all time, He still is one of the smartest batters. With this young line up we need his expierence.
So be it but he still is one of the best switch hitters or all time, He still is one of the smartest batters. With this young line up we need his expierence.
Most definitely, I was just making a joke, I agree, Chipper Jones and Ichiro are the smartest hitters in baseball, though they may not have the talent that Hanely Ramirez and Albert Pujols have…
I hate to get into this but….people please !!…Forget “reaction time to the plate from 45′ as opposed to 60′ “….it’s basically meaningless pertaining to the question. If you think a kid hitting a 74 mph fastball from 45′….means that same kid could hit a 99 mph fastball from Nolan Ryan at 60′6″…think about it….that’s right…he couldn’t…
Pertaining to comparing “reaction times to the plate”…there are “dead times” which basically means the most important “reaction time”…is the last…oh, let’s say 15 or 20 feet for the sake of this argument…which is when you actually “react to the pitch”….In that critical “last” 15 or 20 feet…I promise you….it is a wee bit harder.. to hit a Ryan 99 mph fastball originally thrown from 60′ 6″ than a little leaguer’s 74 mph fastball originally thrown from 45″….
I don’t think anyone told Conrad about Bobby’s #1 rule. If you are productive, You Will Be Punished! Even Kelly in his last few games must have forgotten about that rule.
Jurrjens4NLCY-
I disagree with you Chipper has a lot of talen he is just old in baseball years. He was as productive as they were when he was there age.
Brightside-
+1 Good players finish last in this system.
Canada makes a double play with bases loaded, one out (in the final inning of the game) but heres the best, it was an infield pop up to the catcher (who dove to catch it) and they doubled up the runner at second – Incredible.
Seems like they don’t teach fundamentals in Mexico.
Seriously though, the guy had a smile on his face the whole time. Infante was there too but I got there too late to get his autograph. Prado was supposed to be there but he’s having those headaches so he couldn’t make it.
McFann – it’s okay! I saw Infante inside the Publix. He was helping people shop for groceries. He’s really nice too – was still signing autographs inside the store. I didn’t realize this but they have a few Braves players hit up various Publix stores around Atlanta each month and do autograph signings. It helps out the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
Don’t feel dumb, thats exactly what I thought. I’m like, “Oh that so cute, JJ, Infante, and Prado all go out shopping together, like in Sex and the City or something less gay.”
I don’t even know why someone would even compare what happens in to new york to what happens in Atlanta. I mean you are comparing apples and oranges because they are two different places. Frenchy is exactly right and I for one have no problem with what he said. The guy played in some big high school games and he knows how it is down here. He also knows that this is a college sports town. Its really not that hard to figure out. To put it simply, the college teams have been around longer than the professional teams down here and they have been the more successful teams. Football is numero uno in the south and the falcons don’t exactly have a legacy of winning. When you think about it, its really not that hard to figure out. To compare the two fanbases between the mets and the braves is just really doesn’t make much since.
Yeah, that’s cool that they do that! And I’d love to meet JJ…seems like such a cool guy. Well, and you just said is.
JJ4NLCY–
Are you makin’ fun of me?
Seriously, though, I didn’t see her comment @ 1:48 until my 1:49 came up, so my first thought was that she just saw JJ at Publix and went up to him and asked for his autograph.
Hey, we met Glenn Hubbard at Lowe’s a few years back. He was just doing some shopping…real nice guy.
I was to post some thought lst night but I was interrupted, I think I did posted some of the idea, but here it goes more complete:
Braves have one slight problem, and it is that we are not making that “difference making deal”. Here are some of the deals trying to explain more graphically what I trying to say:
1. RYAN CHURCH: good acquisition. Is he a vast improvement over JF? nope just a different name in the jersey. Nothing but a slightly above average player.
2. Nate McLouth: Good acquisition. What has been his impact? Id say just above none. He is supposed to be a very fast player, I have seen very few SB from him, no infield hits, no slap single, no triples, no hustling double. He was also brought here because of his power. Im not impressed. Not at all, and I think opposition isnt either.
3. GA: solid player, took him 3 months to wake up, lots of injury time, no hustle on the bases, no hustle at all fielding.
4. Ross: Solid player, but still a backup, sure he adds strength to the bench, but 3-4 ABs a week is not enough to consider he makes an impact on this team.
5. LaR: BINGO
6. LOWE: I can recall having a discussion with lots of guys here saying the guy was not an ACE, not even near what an ACE or a bad streak stopper is. I said a million time that he was one of the last options I would like to see the braves pick up.. I can include DOB as one of the persons debating with me that he was one of the games best and that the guy was great for the team. We he is a great 4th guy in the rotation right now (KK has been better than him).
7. Vazquez: Great acquisition, we have been lucky til now with him (is the real javy been showing last 2 games?). This year he has been superb, but he is not the guy is going to beat any ACE in the playoffs.
8. KK: pleasant surprise, but it was a risky addition and some may argue we could have done better for the money. He numbers might be up to his salary. Yet again, not the impact player we are looking for.
9. NO ADDITIONS TO THE PEN, as a result, after 4.5 into the season, Cox is still trying to figure out pitchers rolls.
In few words, where that big name that is carrying us?
1. CHIPPER is not that player anymore.
2. Mc has been as inconsistent as you can get. Great numbers for a catcher, all star appearance, but be honest to yourselves, is this a guy that has carried us for more than 2 games in a row? I cant recall that week………Mc carrying the team for 3 straight games? nope that has not happened.
So whos the leader on this team, whos our TEIXEIRA? Whos our BELTRAN? Whos our UTLEY? Whos our HOWARD? Whos our Pujols? Whos our MANNY? Whos our MAUER? Whos our FIELDER? Whos our ADRIAN GONZALEZ? Whos our HENLEY RAMIREZ?
We dont have a single player that can carry us like those player………Right now LaRoche is close to it, but lets get real, is he near that league? Come on.
There are teams with more than 1 of those guys, we dont even have 1. Fish, Phillies, Yankees, Cards, LAD, Rangers, Boston.
This is depressing.
Yunel and Prado are the only 2 player that I can recall took charge for a week and carried the team, but thats the best we have done………I mean, Prado and Yunel carrying a teams offense? Hellooooo Wren………..wake up!!!!!
Jake W – so you’re Ok with 22K for last nights huge game? If so, then you can’t get on Liberty for not spending more on the Braves. Why should they? That can’t even fill half the park.
J4NLCY, I watched that game too. I know that they are only little leaguers and all but man…. when that ball was squibbed back to the pitcher she was just in la la land. And how about that runner from Mexico at second with the bases loaded in the 6th? A pop up to the pitcher and your standing on 3rd? WHY??? What’s sad is I really expected the pitcher to throw it into center while trying to double the runner up.
Way to make a big deal out of one game. First of all I don’t believe I have ever complained about our payroll. I fully recognize that while we are not the Florida Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays, we are still not the Yankees or Mets either. I understand for someone up north its hard to comprehend that people down here have other priorities. Turner Field at its capacity is about 50,000. The stadium for its market should have never had that many seats but it does. The attendence numbers in the 90’s were basically overperforming for what this market really is. The braves were hot and a cheap ticket to get.
Good for the northeast, baseball is huge. Good for you, explains why your biggest rivalry is baseball. Down here its football. High School football, College Football, whatever it is it will always draw the southerner more on average than baseball. I’m sure if you had seen some of the football crowds that Frenchy played in front of for a HIGH School game it would shock you. Different folks, different strokes. I’m sure high school football games up north aren’t drawing the way they do down here. Do you here me comparing the two, no. Thats becuase I realize the two cities are different.
Has there been a bigger game at the Ted this year than last nights? Not many if at all. The rest of your post proves my point. The Braves aren’t a priority. I actually think that’s partly why some guys like playing there. Good organization, less stress than the big cities. Glavine basically said so whenhe returned.
Soph – Saw your post about Braves appearing at local Publix stores. If they don;t get their act together some of those guys could be working there next year.
Anders, seeing as though Vasquez and Hudson both love Atlanta, I think we can resign one (if not both) for cheap. (Jurrjens4NLCY )
Please let’s not start this whole Atlanta discount thing again. If last off season proved anything that ship has sailed. You think Vasquez is gonna settle for less than Lowe?
I’d say McCann is our Mauer.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Thanks for supporting my post………..that comment of yours is exactly what I mean. I mean. Mc´s offense has becomes francouerish lately and his defense is awful, some might say it is good, but it is average at best.
Oh yeah and last weekend braves had some pretty good attendence numbers. Players said it felt like a playoff atmosphere, they then proceeded to flat out lose the series to the Phils. The one win they did have was aided by a huge philly error(not that i’m complaining because we need all the wins we can get at this point). Crowd didn’t make them any better that series. Cubs sell out all the time, how are they doing? Oh and those Marlins why are they even still around. I mean seriously, whats the biggest crowd they have drawn all year? That 22,000 last night they would love. Tampa Bay Rays in the playoffs last year against the red osx, half their crowd were red sox fans. I guess I just don’t really buy into the whole gotta sell the stadium out all the time thing. I really don’t see where at the end of the day it makes that much of a difference becuase if you are a good team you will be a good team no matter the crowd. Thats my opinion though. Big crowds are nice but they are not necessary.
Javys stuff last night was even better than Dereks stuff against the muts, he just had bad luck, but I have never seen Javy or any pitcher in career as locked in as Javy last night.
JakeW- To a Southerner, football is Georgia, Bama, Auburn, LSU. Tennessee, Florida, etc. To a New Yorker, it’s Hofstra and Columbia-or if they’re really up on it all, Penn State, who until the past several years was not even conference affiliated. No similarities whatsoever. They have zero frame of reference for college ball..
“Has there been a bigger game at the Ted this year than last nights? Not many if at all.”
If that is a serious question Anders I have to wonder why you would even bring up a comparison of the two without first doing research because if you had you could easily answer that question. I mean you are right Atlanta is a more stress free place to play, but then again most places not located in that part of the country called the northeast are. Everyhting is overanalyzed up there. Doesn’t bother me that some players want to get away from that. Just will be interesting to see when the whole new city new place thing wears off of frenchy and those injured stars get back next year and the mets once again have the pressure to win how he handles it. No offense to frenchy but no one really expects anything of the mets at this point so he has not really got the full brunt of what that crowd and that media could be like. The mets still may draw nice size crowds but you got to admit anders, the intensity of the crowds are not the same as they would be if you guys were in it. Saw as much when we played there this last series.
Bobby Cox-Well ya Lowe gave up like 12 hits in an inning and a double to the pitcher?!?!?! Least have actually went 7 not 4. Both had bad luck on the defense side of the ball.

Just PURELY as a human being, what would your reaction be to Larry “Chipper” Jones?/ I’m trying to get you guys to see that you may have lived vicariously through the tremendous hitting exploits of someone who you would totally dismiss if his father had not taught him how to switch hit.
