That’s why I think Gonzo will leave because his agent will probably want something long term (3-4 years)
Plus we have Petey-Pabb, Med’s, and Easy-E who I think can take the role of the 8th inning set-up man for next year. Plus they would be way cheaper options…
And maybe they bring back Ron Mahay, but thats a long time off…
No one is calling for Chipper’s head, but he is obviously hurting and trying to compensate for it. His OPS this month has not been very good, and he is striking out and swinging at bad pitches lately at a rate more reminiscent of Andruw Jones in his last year as a Brave. Might not the Braves be more productive in the short term using some pairing of Prado, Infante, and KJ for a week or so to allow Chipper some time off to heal properly?
That’s half the reason I don’t pay as much attention to the blog when we win. I know even when we do play well and win the game it’s still mostly criticisms on the ole blog.
And if we lose, well I know I can tune in hear to hear reasons why we should fire Bobby and Frank Wren, why we need Leo back, that Lowe isn’t an ace, and we need a big right handed bat in the outfield.
Shaun-Wasn’t talking about making him cornerstone of the franchise or anything, but that speed would be nice at the top of the order and the Dude is a hellacious defensive player for a year or so until Heyward and Schafer (or whomever) are ready.. Morgan sure has energized that Nationals’ offense. I’d also bring in Otis Nixon or Deoin and teach him how to be amjore productive basestealer.
My point is simply that there are better players that may be just as cheap or cheaper.
I’m Ready For Huddy to come back, But I don’t want him to be rushed back and put on the spot like Bobby did to Petey-Pabb earlier this season…
It took 6 weeks for Petey Pabb to find re-discover his mechanics, release points, etc therefore thats wht he stunk the first 6 weeks of the season. I wanted Petey-Pabb to start at Gwinnett the first month of the season because he was only around 10-12 months removed from surgery…
I rather bring back Huddy in the Pen and work his way back to spot start during the final 3 weeks of the season…
Regarding the Hudson vs. Vazquez situation: I’d say Frank Wren should flat-out ask them who wants to stay at, perhaps, a lower salary. Why? Because I think Vazquez would be the first one to raise his hand. And if both bite, well, we got ourselves a staff! Gonzo, on the other hand, I don’t know… we all want the big bucks, right?
Jim, huh? Over the last 28 days Chipper is “hitting” .306/.414/.500. Over the last 14 or so days he’s struggled but if you are going to sit a player like Chipper, you’d better have a very good excuse.
If finding such a player is so easy, why haven’t we done it? We could certainly use some speed in our lineup, and right now we have one outfielder down and another leaving the game with back spasms. A young Nyger Morgan type would be nice to have right now.
The fact that Morgan is 28 is only relevant if you plan to offer him a long-term contract. Even a 3-year deal would not take you much past his peak years, and would give some time to find that younger player you would prefer.
What about the elephant in the room? I’m talking about Chipper. The guy is messed up. He’s either hurt worse than anyone knows, or he’s just disinterested. It’s amazing the Braves have done as well as they have with Chipper providing more double-play groundouts that RBIs. I know Bobby would never disrespect him and move him out of the three hole, but let’s be honest here. How many more runs would the Braves have scored in the past couple of weeks if LaRoche had been hitting third. I hope Chipper can turn it around. He’s my favorite player. But being my fave is a big responsibility, and he’s not living up to his responsibilities. Dude has just been a pathetically easy out, a rally killer and is not taking pitches like he normally does. Perhaps he needs to sit for a series, but with Prado so ahaky, Infante’s at second, there’s nobody to play third. Unless Kelly’s at second and Infante’s at third. Worth considering for a day or two, huh?
OptimisticInTexas, Vazquez is signed through next season so he’s salary is set.
I just don’t see the Braves getting back what Vazquez is worth. Good and durable pitchers are pretty scarce, a lot more scarce than a good bat for leftfield.
The only reason for sitting Chipper is injury that limits his effectiveness. Over the last 2 weeks or so he has had some very ugly ABs that indicate he does have an injury that has limited his effectiveness. I’m only saying some time off might be best for Chipper and best for the team.
I still say the Braves need a decent win streak. Sure we can gain ground steadily by winning 6 or 7 out of 10. But a winstreak of 7-8-9 in a row would surely catapult us up a couple of notches in the standings and intensify and energize the fan base that isn’t that intune right now. I think they have it in them, no time like the present.
If finding such a player is so easy, why haven’t we done it? We could certainly use some speed in our lineup, and right now we have one outfielder down and another leaving the game with back spasms. A young Nyger Morgan type would be nice to have right now.
Jim, the Braves (we?) have–McLouth, Anderson, Church, Diaz are all about as good or better than Morgan.
You know what’s better than speed? Actually being able to produce at the plate. And the current outfield has produced.
In order to get Morgan, the Braves would have had to give up some good, young players. Why do that when he’s not a huge upgrade over what you already have?
I think locals don’t just follow teams as much as they do players. When the players come and go as much as in Miami people get dissapointed when their “favorites” are only a better paycheck away from playing for another team.
Lew:“Supes-It’s not a matter of whether or not Hudson will ever come back to what he once was, but when that might be. He’s only signed for this option year and if you go back and look at Smoltz’s return from his TJ surgery, he wasn’t effective until June and even then it was as closer.”
Doctors say it takes 18 months to fully recover from TJ surgery. Since Smotlz had his surgery in the spring, he didn’t hit that 18 month mark until the END of his first season back. Hudson will hit the 18-month mark in the spring before the season begins.
In the last 30 years only 6 pitchers have posted an ERA below 2.00 in the :
1. Clemens 2005 1.87 & 1990 1.93 (HE IS A CHEATER)……….spelling
2. Pedro M. 1997 1.90 & 2000 1.74
3. K. Brown 1996 1.89
4. Maddux 1995 1. 63 & 1994 1.56
5.Gooden 1985 1.53 (Drug addict but maybe clean at the time)
6. Ryan 1981 1.69
So thats 6 guys in 30 years…….9 times between them…….I would erase Clemens data because he is a shame to our sport. That leaves Pedro and Maddux accounting for 4 of the 7 times it has been done in the last 30 seasons………….
Not only that but Maddux did it back to back……..pretty amazing………and he lead the league in ERA 3 times in a row since he had a 2.36 ERA in 1993……. Thats the most dominating span by any pitcher in a 3 consecutive year span since Koufax lead the league in ERA from 1962 to 1966 while dealing 3 sub 2.00 ERA.
