Since returning in early July, Norton has gotten 5 hits, 7 walks in 26 plate appearances. Low BA, but high OBP. And he has done most of that in the past 2 weeks.

Game story write-through should be up in a little bit, but here it is.

By the way, Cox signed both lineup cards to give to Gorecki. Everyone was thrilled for the kid. Gorecki said he could hear all those friends and family members yelling for him. He left about 100 tix.

“It’s a little different than a Triple-A game, where you might have four or five people cheering for you,” he said.

By David O’Brien
dobrien@ajc.com

New York – One night after Derek Lowe had his doors blown off by an eight-run Mets inning, the Braves returned the favor with an eight-run outburst of their own Wednesday night at Citi Field.

Brian McCann’s three-run homer punctuated an eight-run second inning, and the Braves pounded out plenty more extra-base hits later in a 15-2 rout against the Mets to even the three-game series.

Jair Jurrjens pitched six solid innings for his 10th win and Adam LaRoche and Matt Diaz each homered for the Braves, who need to win against Mets ace Johan Santana on Thursday to take the three-game series.

“These are must-win games, and we responded awesome,” McCann said. “J.J. pitched great again…. [Diaz] is incredible. He’s able to carry a team for a couple of weeks, as hot as he gets.”

Diaz drove in four runs with two hits including a two-run homer in the sixth, giving him seven RBIs in two nights against the Mets and three homers in the past four games.

His two-run single drove in the first runs of the eight-run second.

“Last night was tough,” Diaz said. “I was very proud of the way we bounced back and put it right back on them tonight.”

LaRoche had three hits and homered for the third consecutive game, his sixth-inning solo shot giving him five homers in seven games. Since being traded to the Braves on July 31, he’s hit .389 with six homers and 12 RBIs in 16 games.

“Everything we expected we would get — we’re getting even more,” manager Bobby Cox said of LaRoche, who has 19 homers this season with three teams.

Omar Infante, Yunel Escobar and former Mets outfielder Ryan Church also three hits apiece for the Braves, who had a season-high 18 hits after being held to eight or fewer for six games.

The 18th hit was a ninth-inning single by outfielder Reid Gorecki, the first major league hit and RBI for the Queens, N.Y., native, who arrived Monday from Class AAA. He left more than 100 tickets for friends and family members.

“These are for Gorecki,” Cox said as he signed lineup cards to give the rookie. “It’s heartening to see that. We like him. He’s not just a Triple-A guy.”

The Braves teed off against Billy Bobby Parnell (3-5), a converted reliever who gave up nine hits and nine runs in three innings of his third major league start.

Jurrjens (10-8) won for the first time in his past five starts, allowing eight hits, two runs and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.

“It felt good to get back in the ‘W’ column,” said Jurrjens, who is 4-1 with a 2.87 ERA in six starts against the Mets. He knew Wednesday was important: “With Santana going tomorrow, it’s going to be a more challenging to our hitters.”

Parnell (3-5) had not allowed any earned runs in seven relief appearances over two seasons against the Braves, but they rocked him Wednesday.

Five Braves runs in the second might have been avoided if second baseman Luis Castillo hadn’t forgotten to cover the base on a two-out Garret Anderson grounder to short.

Shortstop Anderson Hernandez had to scramble, reload and throw to first, too late. One run scored there, then Chipper Jones walked to load the bases.

After a wild pitch brought in one run, McCann hit a towering three-run homer to right-center field. He hit the ninth pitch, after fouling off three.

Before Wednesday, McCann was 9-for-52 (.173) with one homer in 15 games.

McCann said his swing’s stunk lately, but he worked in the cage the past few days and felt like he got something worked out. He hit a couple of balls hard Tuesday, and crushed that homer tonight.

Diaz and Mac both talked about how nice it is to have a guy like LaRoche who’s capable of hitting the ball out with any swing, in addition to how well he’s fit back into the clubhouse.

A few of them said Parnell was leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone. Bobby, to his credit, pointed out that Parnell had an inning like Lowe last night, where he didn’t deserve to give up as many runs as he did. (He was right about Parnell — if Castillo covers second, they could have avoided five of those eight runs.)

Mets said Castillo was playing so far over for pull hitter that he couldn’t have covered second. But his mistake was not telling the shortstop beforehand, because then at least the shortstop could’ve thrown directly to first base for the out instead of looking first to second base.

Wayne – Favre’s flip-flopping is annoying but I somewhat understand it and I can tolerate it. What I cannot stand is ESPN’s nonstop coverage of it.

I had the day off yesterday. I was planning on starting out lazy and watching SportsCenter for awhile. I turned on the TV to see the “breaking news” that Favre had boarded a plane at 9:10. ESPN continued to cover the story for literally 90 minutes straight.

And then, it’s as if ESPN was trying to stereotype itself. They broke the Favre coverage….with highlights from the Yankees game. Then they went back to Favre.

I mean, does ESPN think this is what we want to see? Like people are huddled around their TVs waiting for the next news break, like it’s Vietnam or something?

Bobby Cox went over and got a tour of new Yankee Stadium today. Said he liked the field at the old place better, though the outside and clubhouses at new place were pretty spectacular. He said that right-field fence looks as close as the Crawford Boxes down the left-field line at Houston.

You’re very welcome, DOB…With all the information you’re constantly getting out to all of us and putting into articles (which we appreciate more than you can imagine by the way), I could see how it would be very easy to have a small typo…I’m a long time reader and very new poster, and I can’t say enough about the great job you and Carroll do with the blog, the coverage of the team, and communicating with all of us real time at all hours…We truly appreciate it!

Yes, Rochey and Mac certainly hit a few very long HR the last couple of days…I even thought I heard something last week about the Mets hitting their first opposite field HR at Citi just sometime the last week or two (I’m not positive about this though and haven’t verified it, because I find it slightly hard to believe)…Meanwhile, Matty went oppo both yesterday and tonight…

That OF does look very spacious though, even moreso without Nate in CF covering ground from gap to gap…Churchy is doing his best out there in CF, but Nate is a gold glove caliber CF and you just don’t replace those instincts and the reads that he gets off the bat…
