Paul–I know. I f#cking know. Jesus H. Christ. You do NOT need to explain it to me over and over like I’m some sort of 4th grader. I’ve been making that argument for how long? Give it a f#cking rest man. You are NOT the be all and end all of baseball knowledge on here. No one is.
Well, Braves fans, looks like this is gonna be a late one. I’m off to lala land. Here’s hoping our boys kick the Phillies in the teeth tonight/in the morning/whenever we get to play this game. Have a good night, all. GO BRAVES!
Yeah CrimeDog, I can’t help that my kid goes there. I went to UGA too….and Alabama…and a community college….and even some LSU thrown in for .. measure.
And I don’t like acquiring basestealers in lieu of hitters from big power positions like LF, RF, 1B, 3B. Let your middle infielders and CFers be good basestealers, because more often than not they’re going to be average-ish hitters and plus defenders, so that extra ability they bring on the basepaths becomes much larger. But often, from say a LF, you’re sacrificing power for stolen base ability, and that’s a no-no in my book.
There seems to have been a lot of talk about how good this player and that player is, and whether or not to bring up Heyward. Simple question for all here:
Does this team have enough pieces currently in the major league roster and minor league system to win a World Series?
I’m asking this based on the lack of anything other than Heyward coming through the system that has impact talent. Don’t give me Schafer or Freeman. Those two might be average players, but they aren’t elite talents like Heyward.
So the real question is, can Jones, McCann, Escobar, McLouth, Heyward, Hanson, Jurrjens, Lowe, Vasquez, Hudson win a World Series this year or next? I don’t want to talk about anything that is in 2011 because that is too far away. With Chipper and Lowe getting older and Hudson and Vasquez free agents after 2010, that’s when things will spiral downward for this team.
You should be careful using computer during thunderstorm if it’s storming in your area lol. Lightning can even be dangerous right before and right after storm
What sucks is that the conditions were just fine during the day. If this was a “regular” sunday afternoon game, it would have been played and the Braves would have been well rested for tomorrow’s make up game at 4pm against the D’Backs.
NORRIS……….it’s better that Heyward isnt eligible for salary arbitration until after the 2013 season….whereas he would be eligible for arbitration after the 2012 season if the Braves were to either call him up now, or have him on the opening day roster of 2010.
Look at Yunel Escobar for example. In 2007, he made the pro-rated portion of the ML minimum (he was called up mid-season). In 2008, he made 402K. This year he is making $460K. Next year, he will likely be renewed at around $500K. If Escobar was eligible for arbitration after this season, there is no reason to believe that he couldnt get $4 mil through arbitration (after all, Jeff Francoeur “settled” for $3.375K this past winter).
Jair Jurrgens, same thing. He’ll get renewed for around $500K before next year. He could easily get $4 mil in arbitration next year.
The Braves will be paying 2 of their best players a combined $1 mil to play next year. If they were eligible for arbitration, they could easily get a combined $8 mil. You are talking about a difference between $7 mil. $7 mil less that could go towards improving the team.
If Jason Heyward is as good as advertised, then the Braves would save SO MUCH MONEY by delaying his arbitration clock. Also, it delays his eligibility for free agency by a year as well if the Braves wait until June of 2010 to call him up.
You may not like the economics of the game, however ignoring it is not going to make it go away.
Haha fair enough. I’ve been to games at Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Vandy and South Carolina, but I only really got to tailgate at South Carolina. Georgia, obviously, is much better than tailagating in Columbia. Can’t speak for the rest of them though.
There is another series in ATL between the two teams…why start at 10pm east coast time?… especially if ATL has another game tomorrow afternoon. Can the Braves call the league to try to push to postpone the game?
Steve from OH………then why do you keep saying that the Braves should call up Heyward if McLouth has to go on the DL? Why bring up the fact that Heyward is better than Brandon Jones?
We all know that Heyward is better than Brandon Jones.
If you feel that the Braves should wait on calling up Heyward because of the service time deal………then why post that the Braves should call him up if McLouth is injured?
nolie, we totally disagree if you think it’s a maybe when considering position value, contract status, and age. Absolutely a Top-50 player. (EFRIM)
I always respect your position on young players, but OK, we can disagree, I’ll even still respect you in the morning.
Around 50 Ok I guess, near 15 Nope. not even close.I’d prefer that degree of positional value in some position other than catcher. add that to mediocre D and well…
“There is another series in ATL between the two teams…why start at 10pm east coast time?… especially if ATL has another game tomorrow afternoon. Can the Braves call the league to try to push to postpone the game?”
You try to stay away from doubleheaders if you have to. They do a number on your bullpen first of all and the way Atlanta has been with rain delays this year its a good chance we will probably be in for more.
LF- McLouth
CF – Schafer
RF – Heyward
1B – LaRoche or someone similar
2b – Johnson or Prado
SS – Yuni
3B – Jones
C – McCann
That isn’t a winning lineup. This team needs one more bat, even with Heyward next year. Vanderbilt is the BEST place in the SEC to tailgate…I mean where else can you go and still feel like you the home team in conference…this coming from a vandy alum
McFann–are you really surprised anymore? Between the idiots and the uncouth (the latter being Paul Lentz), the blog really has left a lot to be desired in that area…
I said it before , The only reason Heyward will be up is,someone has to go down and he must keep tearing it up. Wren will not pull the trigger unless we have that combo. But he didn’t ask me or he would be packing.
Steve from OH………you might want to re-read your 8:39pm posting. You said the following:
“but an argument can be made that Heyward helps us more than Jones. Jones is the only one I’d consider calling up over Heyward, but they’re pretty much the same player–except that Heyward does everything Jones does, but better. Heyward plays better defense than Jones and is certainly hitting better.

Forget the league – since they come back in and the first pitch hasn’t been thrown, the decision to play is with the Braves executives – not the umpires or the league.
Interested Observer: The Phillies come back here in September. They’re not going to be forced to give up their off day tomorrow to stay and play in Atlanta when they come back for another series next month and a DH could be played then.
It’s moot now anyway, since they’re playing tonight, provided no further severe rain.
No Dentz, it wouldn’t necessarily be an unwise move economically to hold Heyward back until June, 2010. You have no idea how to analyze the situation, because if you did you’d factor in what the Braves will have to pay a right fielder (or platoon) for all of 2010 while they’re waiting to bring Heyward up at midseason. The Braves would save $2.5 million less Heyward’s rookie salary versus what he’d make in the minors if they let GA leave after the season, plugged Heyward in right and moved the Church/Diaz platoon to left. I think the odds are good that Heyward could do at least as well as GA’s .311 OBP with better power numbers and much better defense. The $2 million or so saved on next year’s payroll by that move is a financial offset to moving Heyward’s salary escalation forward one year.
But as you have demonstrated with your inane Francouer versus McCann babbling, you don’t understand a very basic financial concept, the time value of money.
Whether working out all the numbers said it was a financial push or it cost the Braves a net present value of $3 million based on the next 5 years is all but immaterial when you’re paying over $10 million a year to older players like Chipper Jones, Derek Lowe, Tim Hudson and Javier Vasquez. A competent management doesn’t invest all that money in getting a team to the brink and risk missing the window of opportunity to win by holding back a potential difference maker over relatively minor financial considerations.
The only relevant question on Heyward for Braves management should be whether he’s ready to play at the major league level or not, either now or by opening day 2010.
So despite only 3,500 staying around for the game (nice PR move on a school night) – they sold 35,000 tickets – so the Braves would never postpone this game barring a horrible forcast.
You don’t understand that one can present an argument as to why a move may be the correct one but still disagree with it on other (hint: financial) grounds?
Reading you and Lentz go back and forth is like watching the Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner go at it, with you being the Roadrunner. We all know who’s going to win, but watching the Coyote struggle is so entertaining.
I always respect your position on young players, but OK, we can disagree, I’ll even still respect you in the morning.
nolie, just young players?!?!? That’s the only opinion of mine you respect??? Okay. I’ll take it from you……
If we are talking age, contract, then I really do think he is high on that list. Top-15 may be a bit too high, but I’d probably rank him in the Top 30. I didn’t like that Posnanski list at all. He ranked Soriano and Vazquez higher than McCann. I think Jarrod Washburn was on that list. Seemed strange that he would even write something like that. IF that’s the list you were refferring too(ranking McCann #81 and Mauer #2).
Now tell me he’s not the offensive leader of this team, bro (Random)
waste of time, dude. Tommy never allows anything as mundane as facts get in the way of a good rant. better be careful or he will throw his remote at you.
I was just reading bloomberg news and think I got this blog and that webpage mixed up…
DP “time value of money”, jessh mate it is Sunday night, next thing we will be discussng whether we hedge our gamma, delta, theta and rho or combination of the 4.. but I got your points and agree..
If Heyward is good enough, he is old enough and ready enough, eff the $$$ considerations because who cares about 5 years hence, you win now when you can
That isn’t a winning lineup. This team needs one more bat, even with Heyward next year.
I disagree. Take it one year at a time. Wren can make plenty of decisions this offseason that could sculpt next years club differently than many assume it will be. Even so, that 1-8 should be capable of finishing within the top third of the NL in runs scored. And with the starting pitching, well, that’s a good team….
Of course, a Matt Holliday or Jason Bay added to that team, well, I wouldn’t mind that….
alright lets play some ball!, one braves strength: is going to be pinpointed tonight!!!
Despite having two grade A starters out, our depth as a team will step in to pullout a victory in this game. Look for Infante to have his best game since coming off the DL. Also, Veteran Elite, Anderson batting second will prove interesting. Garrett has been outstanding since the allstar break.

Very true, haha. I remember during the game, they kept showing replays of Georgia’s good plays. Certainly the most polite fans in the SEC.

So despite only 3,500 staying around for the game (nice PR move on a school night) – they sold 35,000 tickets – so the Braves would never postpone this game barring a horrible forcast.

Like I said, your reading comprehension=bad.

The bottom line regarding Heyward is that if he is as good as everyone thinks, he is going to get paid anyway.

Despite having two grade A starters out, our depth as a team will step in to pullout a victory in this game. Look for Infante to have his best game since coming off the DL. Also, Veteran Elite, Anderson batting second will prove interesting. Garrett has been outstanding since the allstar break.
