I hear that McLouth’s hamstring has been giving him trouble for an extended period. This is not good if true. Maybe the Pirates sneaked one in on the Braves. Just like with Druw back in 1996,its Heyward time.

It was a nice day down here with the winds blowing about 15 mph out of the east. Did you see that two Tropical Storms formed yesterday and were named Anna and Bill? Their track now is headed right over the Keys which means they might come into the Gulf. I’m getting my generator gas tomorrow.

ray k………you are assuming a lot of “ifs”. Just because we have won 8 of 11 against the Phillies, does not mean that we are a “lock” to win 5 of the last 7 against them. These are the defending champs we are talking about. The Phillies arent going to exactly lay down. The Phillies (just like the Braves during our play-off run) play really tough down the stretch. They have already shown what they are capable of doing down the stretch.

I’m not saying that we cant win 5 of 7. I’m saying that it is going to be TOUGH to do that.

Piedmont–perhaps I should re-phrase myself by saying that I think it is much more likely. And like I said, I still wouldn’t like it any more than if they did it with McLouth healthy, but an argument can be made that Heyward helps us more than Jones. Jones is the only one I’d consider calling up over Heyward, but they’re pretty much the same player–except that Heyward does everything Jones does, but better. Heyward plays better defense than Jones and is certainly hitting better.

It is a stretch, I know, to say that bringing up Heyward even with a McLouth injury is the right move, but I really can’t say that bringing up Blanco or Barton instead gives me a fuzzy feeling. I actually still like Jones a lot, but for some strange reason I think he’s been playing hurt this year. I’m purely speculating; I don’t know if I read it somewhere or whatever…

Oh, and I definitely think Church would play center; if Schafer were healthy I think it would be a no-brainer to recall him. But we’d still need an OF…I dunno. Maybe you’re right and they would recall Jones. I’d like that move more than Heyward, but I’m not gonna say that he won’t be promoted if McLouth goes the way of the 15 day.

Tomahawkin

Through 116 games, Chipper leads the Braves in OPS (.910, to McCann’s .846, Prado’s .831 and Escobar’s .810) AND OPS+ (149, to McCann’s 122, Prado’s 118 and Escobar’s 116).

Now tell me he’s not the offensive leader of this team, bro.

So far this season Chipper has appeared in more games (101, to Escobar’s 98, McCann’s 96 and Anderson’s 94) and has had more plate appearances (425, to Escobar’s 420, McCann’s 385 and Anderson’s 363) than any other Brave.

Now tell me he’s not consistent and dependable, bro.

Through 116 games, Chipper leads the Braves in Runs Created (78, to Escobar’s 60, McCann’s 58 and Prado’s 47) and Runs Created per Game (7.9, to McCann’s 6.0, Escobar’s 5.7 and Prado’s 5.5).

Now tell me he’s not the offensive leader of this team, bro.

Six Braves — McCann (12, 14%), Escobar (12, 20%), Prado (11, 16%), Francoeur (10, 12%), Anderson (10, 12%), Diaz (9, 12%) — have grounded into more double plays than Chipper (7, 9%). Only McLouth (8%), LaRoche (8%) and Johnson (8%) have grounded into relatively fewer double plays than Chipper (9%).

Now tell me he’s not clutch, bro.

Chipper’s batting is responsible for more than twice as many runs and more than twice as many wins as the next ranked Brave (McCann; Escobar and Prado follow).

Now tell me he’s not the offensive leader of this team, bro.

See for yourself.

i dont think they will call heyward up if mclouth is disabled….

i think they are going to be very careful with him. i have seen a couple of others who have suggested this but i think unless he is called up to gwinnett, like tomorrow, and goes on a two week or so tear….then we MAY see him. and i doubt that. i think we are most likely to see him next september, after he starts off next year in AAA. i think the braves are going to be sure that he has the plate discipline that everyone has seen from him thus far. if he succeeds at gwinnett for an extended period then we will see him. i just dont see how the braves would call him up, strait from AA, given what happened with schafer….injury or not.

in my opinion he wont be called up if mclouth is DLd.

Rob–that’s a myth. I like the stolen base, and I like fast, athletic players. What I don’t like are blanket green lights for basestealers, attempting to steal in unfavorable situations, and favoring high numbers of stolen bases in favor of SB%. I also don’t like acquiring basestealers as the backbone of your offense. That’s not the way you win ballgames, it’s by hitting. Stolen bases are a big help, and can be a valuable resource late in games, but let’s not kid around–only the very best basestealers give their teams a net aggregate in run expectancy. Anything else is a net loss if abused. Mangers that let their bad basestealers run wild hurt their teams. A LOT of folks on the blog would be that type of manager.

I would build my teams around on-base ability and power, and add some guys that can steal bases, but I won’t add a pure basestealer instead of a pure hitter. It’s a nice tool to have (and our team DOES have that tool when needed), but it’s not the backbone of your offense and should not be used as such.

“Even with his struggles here of late, I’d MUCH rather have Soriano than Gonzo as closer.”

I guess i’m the opposite. Of the two Soriano has been more dominant and because of that I think he will probably be the harder of the two to keep and you do have to keep his injury history in mind. I know gonzo is never really clean in that he doesn’t get to many 1-2-3 innings but he minimizes damage. Soriano has 3 blown saves and Gonzo 5 this season. The difference to me though is that when Gonzo tends to blow his saves they are usually all one run leads and he doesn’t usaully completely blow the game in the process. We have only lost one game in which he has blown the save while we have lost the two for Soriano. He gives us a chance to comeback and get the win. When Soriano blows the save its ugly. I agree no closer is perfect but these little stretches that Soriano gets into with these homers are ugly. Not to mention I think Gonzo will be cheaper to keep.
