Unbelieveable……….Y.E. Yang just hit an eagle on 14, while Tiger only birdied. Yang has a 1 shot lead with 4 holes left. Tiger started yesterday with a 4 shot lead……..and today with a 2 shot lead.
Tiger has never lost a Major when going into the final round leading. 14-0.
That was pretty much my argument, that he’s ok but not absolutely awful, as opposed to the folks that argue as though he’s the worst defensive catcher in the history of catchers
I’m starting to get worried about Martin Prado. Let’s hope this isn’t a Joey Votto situation, where there could be something a lot worst causing this “dizziness” of Martin’s.
DOB,
what is it going to take for David Ross (a good hitting backup catcher with HR power) to crack this braves lineup against a tough LH pitcher, esp. given how Mac has been struggling against LH pitching of late? With a day game (makeup) tomorrow it would have been perfect for Bobby Cox to rest Brian McCann tonight (and have him as a PH weapon off the bench).
I’m starting to think David Ross is not in Bobby’s Boys Club on the team.
Lentz…you’re unreal. You really think you’re some type of authority on Braves business. I never said they didn’t approach him about a contract. What I said was, you don’t KNOW that they did.
Top 15? Probably not. Top 50? Without a doub (Chili)
top 50? maybe, being a premium hitting catcher is not as valuable as you seem to think since he misses a lot of games and he is not a good defender. I was teasin’ McFann a bit with the 89.
Hope Martin is alright…but from a roster point of view, at least Infante is back to provide some insurance against him being out for a few days or something.
Mixxo: I thought I remembered you putting that it was the same night as the Sunday night baseball game. I wouldn’t want you to leave if you didn’t hate the entire Braves team.
Nolie,
I wouldnt say he misses ‘a lot’ of games. And it’s extremely valuable, in my opinion, to get all-star caliber production from a position where most teams are running out offensive liabilities.
Plus, as “average” as McCann is at defense, he seems to call a very good game behind the plate. He’s handled this pitching staff terrificially this season. That can’t be ignored just because he thinks, for whatever reason, that second base has been moved five feet to the right in recent weeks.
I love the Braves! Have for a long, long time now. Because I divvy out props to good ball teams doesn’t mean I love the guys any less. It also fits well into my reverse psychology scheme.
What can I say? I recognize good players/teams, no crime in that. Maybe I over-glorify them here, but hey, sometimes ya just gotta tip your cap and hope for a better day.
njbraves……..I totally understand that some players like the security that comes with a long term contract, particularly when it is early in their careers and they dont know “for sure” that they have what it takes to be a star in the Majors. However, some players dont want “for sure money”. Some of them actually want “all they can get” (who am I to say that they cant?). They are gambling that they cant make a lot more by doing the arbitration thing and going for Free Agency as soon as they can after Year 6.
So when you hear people on here saying “bring Heyward up right now……if we sign him early next year to a “Brian McCann type contract”…then it wont matter that the Braves lose out on a year of pre-arbitration service. I’m saying that that is simply a foolish gamble for the Braves to take. At least by waiting until June of 2010, that gives the Braves an extra year before Heyward is eligible for salary arbitration. That extra year “could” be used as leverage to get a player like Heyward to sign a contract extension before he is eligible for salary arbitration. I said “could”, not “for sure”.
Actually, it’s a lot above average sometimes, but whatever…
Terrible arm, can’t block the plate or shift to an errant pitch and has too many lapses back there.
Hey, guess what! Mauer has more PB than BMac this year! (7 for Joey, 5 for BMac) Fewer errors, but hey, just saying…
And he does not have a “terrible” arm. It’s his footwork…ya know, if second base was a little more towards first base, his arm would look a lot better.

no he ain’t that at all. Just frustrates me to watch him do things incorrectly. I’m surprised Perez hasn’t worked more with him. Perhaps because of his stature on the club. He obviously does not fit the old scouting parameters on catchers which was Defense,Arm,Power,Batting Average, Speed. Course like with every position not every player lined up that way. Anway I’m done teasin’ McFann. I guess I think he is a keeper. Mauer is better but other than him, I’ll stick with Mac too.
Mixxo: It’s not that you over glorify other teams. It’s that you consistently say season over, ballgame, we suck, Brian Mccann is average, and other things like that. I rarely hear you say anything good about the club.
This final round has been pretty cool.

Well, the Yanger isn’t backing down. And Tiger now has to GO WIN the tournament, instead of watching the other guys collapse around him.

The odds of JJ signing to a long-term contract before free agency (with Scott (Milburn Drysdale) Boras his agent) are about as good the water supply turning to Jack Daniel’s.

You Damn Skippy and you know that in someways that I’m right
The Phillies (Manuel and Dubee, and Lidge himself) think Lidge’s stuff is as good as it’s ever been. He’s still throwing 95. I doubt that they’ll try to seek outside help for the closer’s role. They are probably more likely to go back to Madson.
What is it going to take for David Ross (a good hitting backup catcher with HR power) to crack this braves lineup against a tough LH pitcher, esp. given how Mac has been struggling against LH pitching of late?
Dunno. Do our pitchers not like to throw to Ross or something?
The Braves will make it to the playoffs, but BMac will be really worn out and unproductive.
Dang, radar doesn’t look good. Lets blame that storm in the gulf, it’d be moving the opposite direction if that wasn’t there. next few days probably don’t look very good for baseball now.
McFann —
Pitchers rave about pitching to Brian. That has to be a factor too. Not dissing Rossy at all… Smoltz said it when Brian first came up. And as Matty said, Brian is the team leader both on and off the field. No stats for any of this. And after Monday the walls move, so there will be more homers… have my tix for NY, gonna stay with my brother and his family… all going Tues, just one other on Wed, probably going alone Thurs. All behind the Braves dugout. Fired up.
cabravesfan – enjoy the 18th hole(since discussing dogs and Elvis apparently annoys at least one of the intellectually-gifted denizens of the blog, maybe golf will keep them from going ape-zegers)
I’m really likeing the Braves chances to win 90 games this year. Whether or not it translates to the playoffs is another story, but it will definitely be an improvement over last year.
Atlanta plays 26 games before the end of the season against sub .500 teams, and could win atleast 20 of those easily if they play smart baseball. 9 games against the Mets, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Braves take every one of those. With Wright out (I have a feeling he’s out for the season), there is really no one on that roster anymore outside of Johan and K-rod. At this point we can call Francouer their best offensive player, which is kind of scary. 7 games against Washington and 3 against San Diego, and this team can handle both of them without too much of a problem.
Whether or not we see the october baseball probably depends on the Marlins (who woulda thought they would be the team in our way). 10 games against them, and they haven’t been an easy team for the Braves to beat this year. Beating Philly is important obviously, but there isn’t a shot at anything if they can’t beat the marlins for the rest of the year.
You sure got that right! He’s done a great job with our pitching staff this year even after missing a lot of ST because of that thing.
Hey, that’s great that you get to go to the games in NY (too bad you have to go alone on Thursday, though). Hopefully the Braves will put on a good show! Maybe J. Manuel won’t make Wright play just yet…
Johnny Qwest: The Phillies play here again in September. Why would the Braves have two games tomorrow against the Phillies (forcing Phillies stay over another day) and then against the Diamondbacks? Not happening.
What time today is the Smoltz trade deadline? Is it midnight eastern? I would think it would be 8:30 so Joe Morgan can give his opinion before and after the decision is announced.
My first thought about Prado was vertigo, too. If so, that could be a long-term problem, because you can’t predict when you have future episodes, or how long an episode might last.

Soph, if it breaks-up as this map is forecasting, we might get it in with minimal delay. Sure doesn’t look good at the moment though.

Fired up.

Soph,
My first thought about Prado was vertigo, too. If so, that could be a long-term problem, because you can’t predict when you have future episodes, or how long an episode might last.
