Bat Masterson………….you come in the middle of a conversation and want to make smart remarks.

If you took the time to read the “previous” conversations, then you would CLEARLY see that I was responding to someone who said that “all” Howard does is hit’s homers, that he is only a .276 career (actually he said .270) hitter. Dude said that he would rather have a more “all around hitter”.

That is when I explained to him that the Phillies already have a “better all-around player” batting #3 in the line-up (Chase Utley). He seemed to forget the role of the #4 hitter in the line-up.

He can change a game when he makes contact. There is a reason why pitchers still pitch to him with the game on the line because you know if you make the right pitches you can get him out. All or nothing with him most of the time. A guy like Todd Helton may not have the “sexy” power numbers but trust me he isn’t a guy you want to face with the game on the line because he’s a tough out. Javy hung some pitches for Howard and he got killed for it. Same with Soriano but the guy has weaknesses as Gonzo exploited yesterday. Thats the only point i’m trying to make. Correct he is a cleanup hitter and thats what you want him to do but if Jason Heyward turns out to be what they are projecting him to be I would still want him over Howard less power numbers or not. Besides like I said, Heyward will probably make it to the bigs at a younger age than Howard so you get to benefit from him longer.

What do you know, they choke in another must win game. They don’t deserve to go anywhere but home after the season ends. Even if they lucked out to get the WC spot, they would get hammered in the first round and be out anyways. This team is to streaky, and until they play good ball on a consistent basis, they will always have that what if hanging over their heads. Obviously the Phillies cared more about this series then the Braves did, and that is why they are the defending WS champions and the Braves are just another team..

Calichopper and DOB,

First off calichopper you say I should have stopped watching and blogging after the first loss? Well that would be against the deffintion of being a fan, which is to love a team so much you don’t care how miserable they make you when they lose or how ecstatic you are after a win like last night (which I was). DOB my reasoning (other than my belief) is yes they are just 3 games currently and 3 1/2 games out assuming they lose tonight of the wild card, however they are 4th in the wild card, which anybody here will admit is quite a task to overcome in about a month and a half. It’s nearly impossible to overcome that many teams in this small of a stretch, with as many season’s as you have under your belt I know you understand that, is it possible the Braves are still in it? Absolutely, and I’d still watch if they weren’t Calibrave, but as I said before I’m a realist and realize this season has been a huge step forward from the previous few years and can’t wait to see our future (Heyward, B. Jones, and less likely Freeman) show what they can do next year and beyond for this great pitching, offensively challeged team.

joe morgan is doing a great job showing his ignorance. From “this fields not as big as we
thought”

I’ve had it with the announcers being ripped. Let’s look at the announcers qualifications:

1) Jon Miller – lead announcer
Miller first announced the A’s in 1974 thus having 35 years of calling, watching and analyzing games

2) Steve Phillips – color
Phillips joined the Mets front office in 1990 and was the Mets GM for 7 years – 1997 – 2003. More time as a GM than Frank Wren.

3) Joe Morgan – color
Morgan spent 22 years as a MLB player being a vital cog to the Big Red Machine teams. Was voted into the Hall of Fame

Those of you who complain about these guys are among the least knowledgeable bloggers. I’d pay attention and learn something.

There is a reason why pitchers still pitch to him with the game on the line because you know if you make the right pitches you can get him out.

Can’t that be said for every hitter? Why does this only apply to Howard? It is, after all, incumbent upon the pitcher to execute the right pitch…and they do fail. (Even Mad Dog gave up runs in his best years, if you remember.) What’s important to note, though, is that when the pitcher doesn’t execute Howard often makes the opposition pay… especially the Braves.

Jake W……….part of the reason why Ryan Howard didnt get called up sooner was because Jim Thome was the Phillies first baseman. Howard got a quick “cup of coffee” in 2004 when Thome missed a few weeks while on the DL. Thome got hurt again in the middle of the 2005 season, so they called up Howard again. When Howard put on a power display in the second half of the season to win the 2005 rookie of the year award………that is when the Phillies traded Thome to the White Sox.

Howard was ready in 2003 to play in the Majors. However the Phillies were paying Thome $12 mil in 2003, $13 mil in 2004 and $14 mil in 2005. While Thome was being productive, they couldnt find anyone to take his contract until after the 2005 season. And since Howard cant play any position other than 1st, he was stuck in Triple A.

Also, Jason Heyward will probably not hit clean-up. He sounds like a good #3 hitter (with his speed). I suspect that when Heyward first comes up, he’ll bat 6th or 7th in the order. However, when he proves himself at the ML level, he will probably move to the #3 spot while Chipper moves to the #5 spot in the order. But that probably wont be until 2011 or 2012 when Heyward is put in the #3 spot in the order.

The problem I have with any national broadcast commentary is that they feel like they have to explain everything. They need to realize that it isn’t 1976 anymore. We, for the most part, watch a lot of sports and understand the game. You don’t have to explain to me why you don’t want to pitch Ryan Howard out and over the plate. I already know that.

The point i’m trying to make is that Howard can just as likely strikeout in a big at bat as he is to hit a homer. There are going to be more pitchers willing to take a chance at getting him out than say, Albert Pujols. If Ryan Howard didn’t have those weaknesses they would be putting up the big four fingers and saying walk him. He will hurt you if you make a mistake but Albert Pujols will usually just hurt you. Not to many weaknesses there. Same with someone like Todd Helton. Sometime you don’t need the homerun to win, you just need the hit. Javy will be pissed tonight because he knew he made some bad pitches to Howard and it hurt him but there are hitters that you make good pitches to and they still kill you. Do you understand that?

Braves obviously still alive, but this one really hurts. NO WAY we catch Philly, Braves just got an UP CLOSE look at their 1-6 batters, the alternative is running down 3-4 teams who people didnt expect to be around…if you notice all three teams look like they’re having the time of theirs lives winning. Ok, I never said Heyward would be our cleanup hitter. Someone said they wanted a big bat in the lineup and i alluded to the fact that he could one day be that big bat for us. He may never hit 50 homeruns but if he has the average and hits 25-30 he will still be a big bat in this lineup regardless of where he hits.

And onto howard being blocked it doesn’t really matter to me. It doesn’t stop the fact that Heyward still has a chance depending on when he makes it here to have a longer career(and hopefully with the Braves).
