paul lentz, first of all, soriano should not have been in the game at that time with his recent performance. he can't throw strikes, he's a loser, bobby cox is suppose to be a good veteran manager. i would have trusted any other pitcher with the exception of soriano and acosta both are losers. you don't give away a game like that. juan pierre should not have been on base if soriano throws strikes to him. come on throw strikes he's not going to hit a three run homer, go after him with your best instead of nibbling on a punch hitter. losing that game was unexcusable. tipical bobby coxism all season long

Smoltz is trying to relearn how to pitch with stuff that's not nearly as good as what he used to have. One of the Boston reporters said the word had gotten around on him and the Yankees approach was to take the slider and wait on the fastball which has little movement.

Smoltz tried to come back because he wanted to pitch in big games again, not because he wanted to be a 6th inning reliever for a .500 team.

Smoltz is one of the all-time great Braves but the current Smoltz isn't as good as any pitcher on the Braves roster right now. Boston is releasing him without a decent replacement option, which says they think he's completely finished. They're giving his roster spot to a guy who was pitching in a Japanese industrial league last December.

I knew the minute I heard about the Smoltz DFA there would be people clamoring to sign him.

Why?

If Wren & Co. are going to truly assess the roster heading toward 2010, you can't do it by bringing in non-factors. We've got to get more athletic. I'm starting to think the guy we should have gotten from Pittsburgh was Morgan, not McLouth -- would've been cheaper as well. When this team becomes more athletic, winning won't be so difficult.
