Steve from OH……..are you serious? You have never heard of Larry Flynt? So I guess that you’ve never seen a ‘Hustler’ magazine? Or watched the movie with Woody Harrelson called ‘The People vs. Larry Flynt’.
Last year when we had Corky Miller backing up, Cox ran him out there every 4 days, now that we have a decent back-up catcher, he hardly ever plays and Cox is running our half-blind All-Star catcher in the ground with little or no rest and it shows. He has sucked exponentially since the All=Star Game.
Crazy contract clauses. Pretty hilarious. Love the “I’m better than you” division. And Arod’s clause is pretty absurd for getting paid more than the highest paid player on the team.
With that GDP there, that probably means that all three times the pitcher’s spot in the order has come up tonight (in the 8th hole) it benefitted LA more or at least did not hurt (will likely see a pinch hitter in the next inning lead off).
That 8.32 ERA for Smoltz doesn’t really lend to him being effective in any role on a major league team. Unfortunately for Smoltz, the Braves were right to more guaranteed money.
I know this is completely off topic, but this story about Michael Crabtree wanting to base his contract negotiations on mock draft results and not the real draft results is priceless. What an idiot.
I always got a kick out of the clip of Mary Jo sticking up for her husband, stating “My Joey has done nothing wrong!”, as she’s talking out of the side of her face, that’s paralyzed from the gunshot wound that his psycho, and not very good looking (then again, he was a zubaz wearing auto-mechanic), girlfriend gave her.
Heath……….I dont thing that many people realize the effect that Larry Flynt had on the strengthening the 1st Amendment through the court system. Also, here’s a little bit of trivial that some of you may not know about copyright laws, particularly that FBI warning that you see at beginning of every DVD and VCR tape that has a pre-recorded movie on it. The Mitchell Brothers (the 2 brothers from San Francisco who made the famous porn movie “Behind the Green Door” in the early 70’s) sued a number of independent porn theaters throughout the country for showing their movies without their permission. As a result of their legal efforts, and through working with the FBI…..Congress eventually passed the laws that required VCR tapes (back when VCRs first came out) to have the FBI warning on it.
Who knew that purveyors of porn would be instrumental in certain rights being strengthening?
Meanwhile……..NICE RIP BY CHIPPER. Way to go. Needed that run.
I love that feeling where you’re pretty sure it’s going to be a hit either way and the center fielder keeps going back and at a certain point you know it’s outta here.
Steve from OH……..nothing wrong with watching a little porn.
Here’s another question for you guys? There is a professional golfer who goes by the name J.B. Holmes. However, when he first got his PGA Tour card, he went by John B. Holmes. However after he won his first tournament a couple of years ago………the next week that he was on the leader board, you see J.B. Holmes.
Now why was that? Why would the PGA Tour tell this guy that he couldnt go by the name that he has gone by all his life?
I was at the Danville Braves double header today. Spanjer-Fustenburg is the real deal. 3-6 combined in the 3 games with a 2-Run HR and a 3RBI double that was about a foot from clearin the 400 foot mark in center. Luckily I ran and got the HR ball and got him to sign it, and add “Danville HR Ball”. Hes an awesome guy, and pretty huge, I think that Atlanta will see this kid one day. Also I told him about the blog, gave him the website, he said if he got the time he would stop by the blog one night and talk to some fans. I got some picturs ill upload on photobucket later, gotta find my camera cord.
On the night Smoltz’s career looks as if it’s about to end, Mr. Jones is having one of his best nights ever at Dodger Stadium, where he’s never hit well.
Is Bobby Cox literally the only guy/gal who thinks the Braves have better options in the 4-hole than McCann? He is a 5/6-hole guy. Since Chipper still sort of deserves to bat in the 3-hole, Bobby should have a middle of the order like this:
I’m a poor judge of talent, uga. Based on the scouting reports, I thought he was an overdraft. But then again, I don’t work for the Braves, so whatever. IIRC, the BA scouting report was 86-89 FB, good change, decent breaking stuff, good command.
There were rumors that Roy Clark made a last minute push to Liberty to get the $$ to draft Matt Purke, but no dice. Take that with a grain of salt, but I think it came from KLaw…
I do think it all came down to cash though. Law said they had a huge scouting crew out to see Matzek about a week before the draft, and were scared away by his huge bonus demands.
Oberholtzer did pretty good tonight, theyonly played 7 innings each game because of the Double Header, but he went all 7 and only gave up 4 hits and 2 runs, thetwo runs were in the 4th inning. So the rest of the night he was great. Got a lot of strikes. The win makes him 3-1 on the season.
I’ll say no on where he was drafted (don’t think he was a no.7 overall talent), but yes overall on him. I base this on the fact that he was projected in the first round anyway (20-30 IIRC) and that the Braves scouts really seem to like him. And if they like him, I like him. I think he might end up a good no. 3 starter someday. But was he the best talent available? I’ll go no.
DOB (August 6th, 2009 12:55 pm): “Kevin: LaRoche certainly isn’t a Type-A free agent, but could be a B (they go on two-year stats compared to other free agents at the position)
“Soriano missing most of last season hurts his classification. Not sure where he’ll end up. Couple of folks here on the blog follow that stuff very closely, though, and can probably let us know.”
MLB Trade Rumors has begun forecasting Type A/B free agents based on their updated performance this season.
Tim Dierkes, August 1, 2009: “At the end of each season, The Elias Sports Bureau ranks all MLB players numerically based on a bunch of stats. Every player is categorized in one of five position groups and by league. The rankings cover a two-year time period. They are used to determine whether free agents are Type A, Type B, or neither. . . . Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings last year. Eddie’s incredible work was made possible in large part due to information provided by ESPN’s Keith Law. Eddie is now providing the rankings exclusively to MLB Trade Rumors. . . . The rankings will obviously change over the next two months. Keep in mind that if players change leagues, they are ranked in their new league. New Yankee Jerry Hairston Jr. is a Type B in the AL, while Adam LaRoche falls just short of B back in the NL.”
I like Moylan against Manny here. He’s been very ood lately and maybe he can tigh him up with an inside fastball or sinker…God, I hope. We need to get the first game W.
