Every source so far says that it’s a Kotch for Lorache straight up trade… So now the question, who’s the source that’s feeding all these people? Another thing I hate is all of them talk about the Red Sox doing this cause it’s convenient for them, like all the other teams other than the Yanks just do what they say or something, lol.

There’s a definite defensive drop-off between Kotchman and LaRoche. LaRoche hasn’t fielded well the last two seasons.
I don’t care much for Kotchman or LaRoche, though.

OK Brave: signing D. Lowe was a result of not signing AJ Burnett and Smoltz – pure luck and the jury is still out for the next three years on Lowe. Kenshin K. has been a bust for the money shelled out. The Vasquez trade was his shining moment. Furcal non-signing – pure luck. Hanson was a no-brainer. Not getting Peavy – dumb luck, thanks to the Padres’ greed. Now Wren trades Kotchman, a contact hitter who takes pitches and was part of the good chemistry this lineup has had recently, for a guy who has average power and strikes out like a mini Adam Dunn.
Uh, yeah, sure, whatever. He was moron, despite himself in December.
Now, he’s just a moron.

Meanwhile, sources tell ESPN’s Peter Gammons that Boston has spun off first baseman Adam LaRoche in a trade to his former team, the Atlanta Braves. LaRoche will return to Atlanta in exchange for first baseman Casey Kotchman. The Red Sox reportedly view Kotchman as a better fit in a bench role, and the Braves are looking for more offense in LaRoche. He would have filled only a very limited role had LaRoche remained in Boston after the acquisition of Martinez.

I don’t like this deal. Not very much at all.
Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Beau Jones –>Ron Mahay, Mark Teixeira –> Casey Kotchman, Steve Marek –>Adam LaRoche.
On the flip side, now it is as if Mike Gonzalez was acquired for Brent Lillibridge.
My “favorite” memory of Adam LaRoche: I attended a Dodgers/Braves game (how fitting). Adam hit a Grand Slam to put the Braves up in the top of the inning. Bottom of the inning Adam misfields a ball. Then a walk. Then Adam “fields” another ball on the infield and stands there and looks at the fans and the grass while every one advances safely to their base to load them up. Meltdown Bradely hits a grand slam to put the Dodgers up. Dodgers win. Adam LaChoke is still standing there day dreaming.

IF it’s a straight up trade, seems to me they’ll either go FA for 2010 at 1B or it’s Freeman’s turn. This might be a “stand-pat” move (most think this is a lateral move?) and more of a move for 2010. Anybody know any 1B free agents next year?

LaRoche has more power, but is not as good as a contact hitter. Kotchman is a little better defensively too. The only thing that I can think is that, as another blogger mentioned, maybe this appeases Chipper and McLouth who are currently under performing.

The only reason I could see this trade making sense is if they plan to platoon Infante and Laroche when Infante comes back…of course, Kotch was a lefty too so I really have no idea.

LaRoche is 7m, one year, through arbitration, Kotch was almost 3m, one year, also through arbitration. LaRoche FA at end of year, I think Kotch still arb eligible? We just acquired salary for a worse hitter and worse defender?

If all the Braves get is Roachy in this, then it is indeed a head scratcher…..you don’t disrupt the kind of chemistry the Braves created in the past month unless there’s something that really improves the club. It’s the Braves’ loss, in my opinion, if this Kotchman for Roachy trade goes through. This only gives the Braves another high strikeout, occasional power guy, when we had a Gold Glove caliber 1B who makes good contact, and was beginning to show some pop as well…..
