We got Laroche cause he’s cool, knows Chinese boxing, owns a hunting company with Chipper, and has a swing that will give our announcers something to talk about the rest of the season just back off back off!

Adam makes no sense if Kotchman is still on the team. Increased payroll for about the same production and he’s a FA after this year – Kotchman is not. They have to be flipping Kotchman somewhere. WHile I like Adam, I was beginning to like Kotchman.

Is the LaRoche move about opening up first base for next year? Kotchman would have been under contract for another year while LaRoche becomes a free agent. Now, first base is open for a power bat or Freddie Freeman (though likely too soon for him still).

I spoke too soon! The LaRoche trade makes no sense whatsoever! There is no versatility with LaRoche, no speed, and a piteous pinch-hitter. Kotchman has played better and now he is going to the bench. Or worse, traded.

Really not sure I can get on board with Adam LaRoche. I like him, always have, but it makes little sense for the team.. Casey is a better all around player then Adam and the last thing we need is another left handed bat. Unless the Sox are planning on eating a large chunk of that $7 mill, I don’t like this all that much

Red Sox’ Adam LaRoche Traded to Braves for Casey Kotchmanby Adam Hirshfield on Jul 31, 2009 3:31:57 PM With the Red Sox pulling off the big trade for Cleveland catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez, that leaves the team with Martinez, Kevin Youkilis, Mike Lowell and recently acquired Adam LaRoche sharing time at the corner infield spots.

Now you can add Casey Kotchman in LaRoche’s place.

LaRoche, who the Red Sox picked up on July 22 from the Pirates, has been traded to the Atlanta Braves for fellow first baseman Casey Kotchman.

With Martinez and Kotchman added to the Red Sox’ lineup, there’s still a glut at the corner infield spots, meaning that another deal is likely on the horizon prior to the deadline

LaRoche is a big-time 2nd half player though. You have to give him that. Although Kotchman and LaRoche are similar players, I think LaRoche gives the Braves a boost in power, something they sorely need.

I also don’t think LaRoche being a FA at the end of the year is that big of a deal. He loves Atlanta, I could see him re-signing here.

I understand it from both sides, although I’d like it better for the Braves if the Sox ate some of LaRoche’s salary this year or threw a low-level prospect at us.
