So you’re getting all this salary flexibility by dumping Kotchman and 3 mil in contract responsibility? You get salary flexibility by dumping 8-10-12 mil in salary PEOPLE!!!!
You also create that 8, 10, 12 million by ridding yourself of Kotchman’s $3 mil, KJ’s $3 mil, Frenchy/Church’s $3 mil, Infante’s $4 mil, Anderson’s $2 mil. All of a sudden, you can get yourself a $15 mil thug at a corner

With Heyward and Schafer pretty much ready to go for opening day next year….you really think the Braves will spend a ton of money on an OF?… Probably not. Especially since they’ll likely pick up Hudson’s option.

This deal shows just how fickle fans can be. Braves fans on this blog were begging for Casey Kotchman to be gone just a few days ago. Now, they are lamenting the fact that he’s gone. Did you think an Adrian Gonzalez deal could be made for Kotchman? I think that while Adam LaRoche isn’t going to be the long term first baseman in Atlanta, he offers at the very least more of a power threat than Kotchman. If what I have heard was true, Kotchman was not very pleasant in the clubhouse. That goes a long way on a winning team. Oh, by the way. That’s a LETHAL lineup Bobby Cox has employed tonight. Jason Schmidt returns to Atlanta, shuts out the Braves and looks like a hero. On the issue of whether or not someone else had to be shipped out in order for Barbaro Canizares to be called up, I believe tha would be true. The Braves may have put someone on the DL also.

Heath & Braveheart, on the OF situation for next year. That’s tough to answer. IF Atlanta plans for Jason Heyward and Jordan Schafer to be in the outfield next year, they had better have a pretty strong fall back plan. Look how things worked out with Schafer this year. Frank Wren went out and traded for Nate McLouth so there was no fall off. They actually gained in that situation. If you put Heyward and Schafer in the outfield and they both tank it, then what do you do? On top of that, you will have questions to answer in the bullpen and at first base.

Anyone still tracking the comparison between Frenchy and Church/Diaz since the trade? Despite his terrible stretch, my guess is Frency will adjust, belatedly, and be hitting for some power over the next decade, long after Church and Diaz are out of baseball.
Seems like the Braves general roster needs are 1) power 2) speed and 3) bullpen depth. Kudos to Wren for a small step forward in the power dept. with the LaRoche trade, even if it is short term. Probably a good bet that he gets a 1-2 year deal from the Braves to provide some transition to Freeman.
Gotta add some speed somehow, so hopefully Jordan S. problems were just injury related and he can help in that dept. next year.
I guess every team’s blog crowd tends to get overly excited about the leading prospects, but damn the buzz about Heyward is exciting isn’t it? I have been in the “don’t rush it” camp, but spring training next year should be fun if he makes a statement with some power. And I guess he could do some pinch hitting and start a game or two this Sept. without putting too much pressure on him.

I have zero faith in Schafer. None. Kid was so completely overwhelmed, I can’t go into next season trusting him. I’m not too high on 22 year olds that get fastballs smoked by them on a routine basis

The Braves got Kotchman from the Los Angeles Angels in the Mark Teixeira trade on July 29, and Kotchman hit .267 with 24 doubles, eight homers and 61 RBIs in 130 games for Atlanta, with a .346 on-base percentage and .378 slugging percentage.
In that same period, LaRoche played the same number of games (130) and hit .258 with 37 doubles, 23 homers, 75 RBIs, a .330 OBP and .483 slugging percentage.
