So you’re getting all this salary flexibility by dumping Kotchman and 3 mil in contract responsibility? You get salary flexibility by dumping 8-10-12 mil in salary PEOPLE!!!!
You also create that 8, 10, 12 million by ridding yourself of Kotchman’s $3 mil, KJ’s $3 mil, Frenchy/Church’s $3 mil, Infante’s $4 mil, Anderson’s $2 mil. All of a sudden, you can get yourself a $15 mil thug at a corner
Ok the boos for Manny were much, MUCH bigger than Furcal. That’s to be expected, but really it was mostly cheers for the former Braves shortstop, which I know makes him happy.
Because the braves had another option to play right field. If they had another first baseman not named norton, you wouldnt have seen barbaro tonight. Im just telling you what the facts are. Barbaro is in Kotchman’s spot. That is a fact. It’s not an opinion.
nice start for Hanson. A seven-pitch first inning, six for strikes. He gets Manny striking out on three pitches, the last of which was a curveball Manny swung through.
Braveheart: not sure about AL’s ranking, but that’s a great point @ 7:33 … Braves could get a draft pick for Adam, but would get nothing for Casey if they let him walk after this year.
Shane………..I stand corrected. Thanks for the link. That is why I asked for clarification.

This deal shows just how fickle fans can be. Braves fans on this blog were begging for Casey Kotchman to be gone just a few days ago. Now, they are lamenting the fact that he’s gone. Did you think an Adrian Gonzalez deal could be made for Kotchman? I think that while Adam LaRoche isn’t going to be the long term first baseman in Atlanta, he offers at the very least more of a power threat than Kotchman. If what I have heard was true, Kotchman was not very pleasant in the clubhouse. That goes a long way on a winning team. Oh, by the way. That’s a LETHAL lineup Bobby Cox has employed tonight. Jason Schmidt returns to Atlanta, shuts out the Braves and looks like a hero. On the issue of whether or not someone else had to be shipped out in order for Barbaro Canizares to be called up, I believe tha would be true. The Braves may have put someone on the DL also.
MiaBch @ 7:37pm – no, I think Adam could nab us a draft pick since he is a free agent after the year. Casey is arb-eligible, so no draft pick if you non-tender him.
They may not non-tender him. Might like him at $8 mil for one year if he accepts arbitration.
Will the Braves have $40 mil freed up to spend over the winter with either Hudson or Vazquez gone, Soriano and Gonzalez gone, Infante, KJ, Garrett, Kotchman/Laroche, Frenchy/Church all gone?
Jason Schmidt caught a break tonight. 3 easy outs tonight to go with the pitcher’s spot. Instead of having to face Prado, Escobar and Kotchman………he gets to face Diory Hernandez, Kelly Johnson, and Barbaro Canizares.
Heath & Braveheart, on the OF situation for next year. That’s tough to answer. IF Atlanta plans for Jason Heyward and Jordan Schafer to be in the outfield next year, they had better have a pretty strong fall back plan. Look how things worked out with Schafer this year. Frank Wren went out and traded for Nate McLouth so there was no fall off. They actually gained in that situation. If you put Heyward and Schafer in the outfield and they both tank it, then what do you do? On top of that, you will have questions to answer in the bullpen and at first base.
Anyone still tracking the comparison between Frenchy and Church/Diaz since the trade? Despite his terrible stretch, my guess is Frency will adjust, belatedly, and be hitting for some power over the next decade, long after Church and Diaz are out of baseball.
Seems like the Braves general roster needs are 1) power 2) speed and 3) bullpen depth. Kudos to Wren for a small step forward in the power dept. with the LaRoche trade, even if it is short term. Probably a good bet that he gets a 1-2 year deal from the Braves to provide some transition to Freeman.
Gotta add some speed somehow, so hopefully Jordan S. problems were just injury related and he can help in that dept. next year.
I guess every team’s blog crowd tends to get overly excited about the leading prospects, but damn the buzz about Heyward is exciting isn’t it? I have been in the “don’t rush it” camp, but spring training next year should be fun if he makes a statement with some power. And I guess he could do some pinch hitting and start a game or two this Sept. without putting too much pressure on him.
We can make a run at Branyan who is a FA after this season. (Unknown)
yeah like that is gonna happen. The guy is id thirties ,has had one decent year in his entire MLB career and they are gonna pay a fA price for a guy they already gave away once. I don’t think so.
I have to just say I’m not crazy about the LaRoche trade.
I’m not saying he’s worse than Kotchman necessarily, I’m just saying we now no longer have the guy who’s been hitting 400 foot homeruns and making every play at first and yet we still have Kelly Johnson and Diory Hernandez.
With Heyward and Schafer pretty much ready to go for opening day next year….you really think the Braves will spend a ton of money on an OF?…
I have zero faith in Schafer. None. Kid was so completely overwhelmed, I can’t go into next season trusting him. I’m not too high on 22 year olds that get fastballs smoked by them on a routine basis
Did anyone else find it funny that San Diego ended up trading Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox for far less than they would have gotten from Atlanta. Kevin Towers is a clown.
The Braves got Kotchman from the Los Angeles Angels in the Mark Teixeira trade on July 29, and Kotchman hit .267 with 24 doubles, eight homers and 61 RBIs in 130 games for Atlanta, with a .346 on-base percentage and .378 slugging percentage.
In that same period, LaRoche played the same number of games (130) and hit .258 with 37 doubles, 23 homers, 75 RBIs, a .330 OBP and .483 slugging percentage.
Heath… We dont need him out of the game. This is one of the few times when anybody they bring in from the pen will be a better pitcher. Although it might effect the next 2 games.
