Wasn’t LaRoche booted out of ATL for being aloof half of the time? He looks like he has down syndrome. Hopefully Furcal will return to ATL and he and Manny will get wasted after the the game and miss the final 2 games due to incarceration. I hear Manny grew his hair long because he likes his hair pulled. Club Miami is calling those two for a late nite fiesta.
Kotchman never seemed happy. I think the first time I saw him smile was last night to Chipper about that throw to first. You can’t downplay the effect of players playing happy. You know Adam will be excited to play on a team that has a chance to win. I’m not surprised he wasn’t performing for the Pirates. I am expecting a little fire from Adam and maybe even some from Nate, Chipper, and Mac. Adam is a second half player who can hit some shots. He’s not an average guy but he still gets on base at a solid rate. He is actually a pretty slick fielder with better range that Kotch. He only has 1 error this year actually. Everybody calm down because this gives us the power we need for the rest of the season and then some freedom for the off season to evaluate Adam for this year to see if we wanna resign him or run at another 1st baseman. Just think if he hits towards the top we could have Yunel Escobar as an 8 hitter. That’s a pretty deep lineup if you ask me. We didn’t give up any prospects at the deadline either which I was extremely happy about. Don’t underestimate Adam’s swing that’s like a breath of fresh air. This guy can rake when he’s on. He even hit a tower in his first game with Boston up on the green monster for opposite field power. This isn’t a huge deal but I think it will help us for the run this year.
If we bat LaDouche cleanup that really would be too much to bear. I hope that any of that speculation is completely off, otherwise Chipper better work on his take out slides at second.
Using your stats, I will attempt to explain. Season stats: LaRoche – .772 OBP. Kotchman – .764 OBP. That’s INCLUDING the last month where Kotchman was doing awesome and LaRoche doing terrible. If LaRoche is still leading him after that month, imagine how much better he’s likely to be when he ISN’T playing below his level (and Kotchman isn’t playing above his).
I like the trade. It’s obvious the Braves were not going to tender Kotch, and Laroche’s upside in the second half is huge-he is a much better second half player. We know what we had with Kotch-we will get at least that with Adam and maybe a Spark.
If Freeman isn’t ready for next season just sign a first baseman to a 1 year deal. First basemen

Ross Gload (34) – $2.6MM club option

If anyone is seriously reading this blog lets try to make sense of the trade. The Braves found a way to add a player with some power. We did lose a great fielder in Kotchman but if the Braves were not going to tender him next year then in all honesty we made a good swap here. In reference to not getting a reliever like some might think we need ithink the following was the mentality; the Braves were waiting to see what we can get out of Huddy , if we are still in contention and we still have the waiver trade deadline a full month away.
So after LaRoche goes elsewhere in the offseason, basically all the Braves got for Mark Teixeira is Stephen Marek.
Remember they traded Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, Matt Harrison, Neftali Feliz and Beau Jones to Texas to get Teixeira. That’s right, five players for Stephen Marek.
I want to know how LaRoche “Left a bad taste in many people’s mouths” or why they wanted him to go so bad?
His last year here he hit 32 freakin HRs! had over 90RBI
why is that soooo horrible?
becuase he made one or two bone headed plays? jeez! KJ did that in one game last night and Escobar does it a good bit!
Now as a pitcher goes through the lineup he seriously has to worry about McLouth, Chipper, McCann, LaRoche, Escobar and to an extent Prado and GA taking them deep at any given time
pithcers had NO fear of Kotchman, that is why he had so few walks (especially hitting 8th)
having another power hitter will turn the lineup over more
I guess Kotchman was the odd man out because he wasn’t a partner in Buck Commander: http://www.buckcommander.com/command_post/. Apparently C. Jones and LaRoche are good friends.
I think my favorite part of this blog is all the people who log on and are just now getting the news about the the trade – and reading their knee-jerk responses, almost 90 minutes into the discussion.
I liked the Laroche-Kotchman deal, until I read that Adam is a free agent after this year. Frank must be of the thinking that the only way we have a chance at the wild card, is to get a power bat. My question is: Who plays first base for us in 2010 if Adam leaves as a FA?
Good deal if we turn it on and make the wild card. Bad deal if we dont make it, and Laroche leaves as a FA.
Agreed. Wren looked at the possible FA first basemen and said, why not upgrade for the last two months of this year if it doesn’t cost us any (or much) cash?
This move maybe a short term head scratcher, but long term, it give Braves what they need. Flexibility in payroll and also possible call ups for player some clamor for, say guys like Freeman/Heyward.
I think while it might be a short term head scratcher, it still has positives for short term (meaning this year).
Better idea if we plan on hitting Adam 4th (and also, I as well can not still fully grasp that I am discussing this):
McLouth
Prado
Jones
LaRoche
Escobar
McCann
Anderson/Diaz
Church/Diaz
I would also like to see Norton get the boot and look at possibly keeping Canizares and having him play 1-2 times a week if there is a lefty out there as Adam has been horrid against LHP.
If a frog had wings he’d fly! “Imagine this and imagine that” THis ain’t make believe! We can’t sit around waiting for Adam to get his mojo back. The fact is we dealt a “hot guy” for a “cold guy”(try ice cold, worse month than Frenchy ever had probably) at an inopportune time, while we are trying to win the wildcard! And we are calling it an “upgrade”? Some of you will fall for anything! Thats just me. You are welcome to pie in the sky fairy tales if you wish. Lets hope for all of us who care about the Braves that Adam can somehow flip a switch!
Upgrade?? The dude has a HUGE hole in his swing. He is NOT a clutch hitter. At least Kotchman shows some clutch lately. Look at what Laroche did in July, he sucks. I couldn’t stand to wacth him strikeout all the time then, even less so now.
my guess is that Kotch was not traded because of “clubhouse issues” but rather; Brian Jordan was simply mentioning that Kotch was a loner as part of his parting shots in regards to the trade.
That said, when you consider that Kotch was a loner, and LaRoche is so popular because he hunts and cuts the crotch out of Chipper’s sliding pants, Wren thought it would be a good idea to get LaRoche back for the same amount of money as he was paying Kotchman, and see what happens.
I like Laroche, my wife likes him, I hope he succeeds for us this year. But this trade really doesn’t make much sense. It’s a gamble that Laroche is going to have a huge second half, I hope he does, for all of our sakes!
I reckon the Braves feel the pen is fine for now or they’re still shopping around for a cheap MRP of somekind… at least an effective one and I don’t know how cheap those guys are. LaRoche is kind of a low risk, high reward guy. He can be a little unpredictable with the bat but you know he’ll hit more HR’s than Kotch. Just a step below defensively.
RC: if they trade Vasquez, Frank Wren should be hung.
Trade KK to anyone stupid enough to take him and his salary. The Braves cannot exercise the option on Hudson: too much money, and they have to re-sign Gonzalez and Soriano.
A rotation of Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Hanson, and Medlen will more than suffice for 2010. With Hudson, Francoeur, Anderson, Church, Kotchman, Norton, Diaz, Ross, and LaRoche gone this winter, the Braves will save a TON of $$$’s by not extending contracts or arbitration to these folks.
Using KJ (if they still want him in LF for 2010), Heyward, Cañizares, Blanco, B. Jones, Schafer, Sammons, and Conrad will also save lots of bench money. If Schafer gets it together, even McClouth would become expendable for 2010.
The freed-up money could be used to also sign Escobar and Jurrjens long-term, as well as keep a formidable rotation intact (Vazquez is gone after 2010, saving more millions to sign Hanson long-term) and keeping the tandem of Gonzo/Scowl in our bullpen.
Maybe Barbaro fills that RH bench bat I was looking for, but I seriously doubt I have that much confidence there as he is a rookie AND heck, Diory certainly didn’t translate his game well from AAA to the bigs…
Either way, just a strange group of events today…
Anyone have any idea how bad the lineup is going to look tonight?!
McLouth
Johnson
Jones
McCann
Canizares
Anderson
Diaz
Hernandez
Will be interesting to hear what Wren has to say. It sure sounds like Kotchman was going to be non-tendered, because at least to me it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to do the trade otherwise.
What just happened? I was an Adam fan the first time around! Why not trade Kotchman for something of use (An arm or something) Move Chipper to first, Prado to third, KJ or Infante to second. At least bring up Canizares to play first and get some prospects.
People, who cares about how things are in the club house…the game is played on the field. The Yankees had some extremely dysfunctional club houses that even spilled out onto the field occasionally (Reggie & Billy), but they still won!
LaRoache is not an upgrade over Kotchman. Kotchman has a better batting average and one third of the strikeout of LaRoache. The hole that was filled by trading Frenchy (better all around player than Church), and benching KJ has been reopened.
Just like the Mets got the better player in the Church / Frenchy deal, the Red Sox get the better player today.
While the Phillies are out making real deals the best we can do is bring back players that for whatever reason were not good enough to stay the first time.
I don’t know anything for sure…even about the whole LaRoche thing…just weird…but I’m just going off previous Yunel injuries thinking it’ll be a few days…
So yeah, that lineup doesn’t strike much fear into anything w/ Chip and Nate not hitting a lick right now…not even a Jason Schmidt lite who’s now topping out at 87 w/ his heater…
the Braves will offer LaRoche arbitration in the offseason because it would be great to have him for 1 more year then turn things over to Freeman. I don’t know whether he would be a type A or B free agent, but he will bring us a pick or 2.
With Soriano, Gonzalez, LaRoche all free agents we could have a huge draft next year. I would offer both Soriano and Gonzalez both arbitration because we could use them next year, and they are unlikely to accept it. They will want the 3 year deal
EPSTEIN: What can I do?. . . I really screwed up the deal with Pittsburgh. . .
SMOLTZ: Hey Theo, I have an idea. . .
EPSTEIN: John, I’ll listen to any idea even though right now, you suck. . .
SMOLTZ: Call the knothead down in Atlanta and make the offer. . .
EPSTEIN: Hold on John, they already had him, they won’t bite. . .
SMOLTZ: Oh, they will, Theo, trust me. In fact, I’ll call Chipper right now and float it past him. . . Give me 20 minutes. . .
Sorry i wasnt sitting by the computer at 4:00 sharp, brent a. Are the only people allowed to comment on the trade the ones who were on here the second it went down? I was not aware of that. I’ll try to do it right next time.
“yeah, he is thrilled. Just visiting with Adam when the Pirates were here in June, he has a lot of great memories from here. Quite frankly, some of his best friends (inside and outside of baseball) are here.”
It’s funny to read knee jerk reactions 1.5 hours after the trade. It just is.
They are kind of unexpected because most of the conversation has moved forward and then – boom! Somebody logs on, finds out the news, and drops.a “WTH! Frank Wren is an idiot!”
I’m not making fun of people for just finding out the news. I’m laughing because it’s entertaining to continue to see people’s gut reactions to the trade, well after the trade was announced.
I know statistics are inconvenient sometimes, but in “late and close” situations in their careers, LaRoche’s batting average is 40 points higher than Kotchman’s, his on-base percentage is 39 points higher and his slugging percentage is 177 (that’s right, 177) points higher.
Ol’ Rochy actually improves on his stats when the game is on the line, while Kotchman historically has underperformed (examples: career batting average of .272 drops to .234, slugging drops from .412 to .314). Go to baseball-reference and see for yourselves.
No doubt, this is a huge upgrade. We have some haters who don’t like Adam’s personality, but you lose the argument on which player is better.

Maybe comfortability is important to LaRoche:
.330 .381 .592 .973 Home
.159 .269 .287 .556 Away
Basically equal number of ABs away and at home. Hopefully his comfort with a reunion with the Braves will translate well.

Here’s a good question:
Why would the Red Sox want Casey Kotchman?
I have thought about this and thought about this for about 30 minutes…. the only thing I can come up with:
Kotchman’s low salary.
Does anyone else wonder the same thing?

Yay! Kotch has a higher average! Woo! Even with that higher average, his slugging percentage is still lower than LaRoche’s.

Kotch – .127, .140
LaRoche – .198, .217

Maybe Barbaro fills that RH bench bat I was looking for, but I seriously doubt I have that much confidence there as he is a rookie AND heck, Diory certainly didn’t translate his game well from AAA to the bigs…
Either way, just a strange group of events today…
Anyone have any idea how bad the lineup is going to look tonight?!

brent, it is not the same amount as Kotch. Laroche makes 7 mil, Kotch 2mil. FA at the end of the year, Kotch I think has two more.
But you don’t make this deal in the middle of the chase when we have been hot.

Will be interesting to hear what Wren has to say. It sure sounds like Kotchman was going to be non-tendered, because at least to me it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to do the trade otherwise.
He must not have fit in. But who knows for sure?
