Talk of Smoltz back here is insane. The relationship ended on a bitter tone, and the fortunes of this man and his former team do not make for a homecoming, reconcilition – much less a division flag or w/c slot. We were right not to pay 5-5 for him then, and he’s isn’t looking back for us now. But take heart, he’s will be a Brave in the end. His challenge now is to earn a salary behind his present potential. That 7 ERA will be a long time coming back to respectability. (Even Maddox in his last year had a 7 inning 69 pitch SO – in an otherwise bleak year, but that “flash of brilliance” was nothing more than a reminder. IMHO Smoltz has a couple of those left, but nobody is going to claim he earned 5-5.

Nice rip by Kotchman there. I have Kotchman, Escobar, and McCann all on my fantasy baseball team tonight…..to go along with Chipper, Garrett, McLouth and Prado (I wish that I knew he wasnt going to start tonight).

The reason I picked all these Braves tonight is because I felt that the Braves were due for a big offensive performance tonight. I felt a possible 10 game burst tonight. I hope I’m right.

Really good piece by Chris Vivlamore in the AJC (newspaper) today on Brooks Conrad.

I already liked the guy b/c he played well when he was here, but after reading that you can’t help but want him to get a shot to play somewhere in the majors (even as a bench player).

I bet that Conrad is called up tomorrow, if either Esco or Prado have to miss any significant amount.

Diory Hernandez is an inferior defender/thrower and a subpar hitter.

Braves a huge loss without Esco on the field.

Fraking shame, let’s hope nothing serious. Maybe taken out as a precaution?

On the Pirates – I know, I know “who the hell cares”, but the economics of limited revenue sharing and the luxury tax is such that a team with a low payroll can indeed turn a profit (same economics creates FA millionaires) with low risk. Purely from an economic perspective, consider the $16-20m profits of teams like the Rays, Pirates of 6-7 years ago versus the losses of high salaried teams like the Orioles of the same years. Which business model do you like as an owner? The Steinbrenner money alone can cover a lot of your operating losses w/o the first turnstyle click. A little simplistic, maybe, but you look at the Tampa’s, the Pittsburgs, and KC’s year after year (TB still is bottom five in attendance, and those Aubry Huff t’s aren’t bringing it either), and you know what’s going on: socialism of the diamond. Hey, this is America, I love it.

Dave, I appreciate you mentioning the PED story on Big Pappi & Manny. One thing I would like to mention that really upsets me about yours and other coverage, and don’t take this as me just attacking you, is that the PED testing is broader than roids, and 90% of the substances on the banned IOC list are actually things other than roids, and about 50% of those are sold as over counter supplements at your local GNC & Vitamin Shoppe, or have valuable uses as prescription medications.

So while it is fine to be surprised by the names, and it’s not OK to be on that list, as the IOC and the testing community finds most of those substances to give you a definitive advantage, they’re not just roids.

We get into dangerous grounds when we start lumping things like stimulants, pain killers, beta blockers & anti depresents, which are all on the IOC banned list, as roids.

I’m sure the “rehab assignment” was more posturing by the Braves in light of the grievance. Once you suspend someone’s pay, that seems to be the point of no return. It doesn’t happen very often. It’s ok, I know that you know you were wrong. No one expects you to “know” what Bobby is going to do even though you steadfastly claim that you do.

The first thing that I would do to that loser umpire is shave off his 70’s porn star mustache. The second thing I would do is make him officiate his next game behind the plate without any protective equipment. Of course this would be when the Braves are playing. The last bit of punishment would be make him throw BP to the Braves from 20 feet with no screen in front of him. After all of that we should never have an issue with him again! Looks like Conrad will be back up tomorrow night? Prado will probably be out for some games and Escobar looks like it will be the same for him.

CrimeDog……….I’ve been watching Bobby Cox manage a long time to get a good read on how he manages, particularly when it comes to “his boys”. Bennett was one of “his boys”.

I’m beginning to think that the “pay grievance” thing was Frank Wren’s way to trying to get rid of Bennett without telling Bobby, “look Bennett is a bum, I’m going to cut him”.

Just like the Francoeur trade, I’m sure that Bobby wasnt thrilled to see one of “his boys” gotten rid of. Now if Frank Wren can find some way to get rid of Greg Norton without pissing off Bobby Cox.
