Good analysis Shaun. Never took into consideration the run differential. I would imagine that Wren (and the Mariners GM) have taken that into consideration.
That being said, didn’t we have an extremely odd run differential for the record we had last year?
I agree, our “odds” of hitting the WC are probably greater than the Mariners is/was. But this team has seemingly underachieved for a few years now, regardless of what we all feel is the talent on the team.
I just see it as an opportunity to fast track some prospects that will be available to help sooner than draft picks will, next year and beyond. Because when Gonzalez and Soriano both walk at the end of the year, that is all we will receive.
Very surprised with the Jeff Bennett situation. I guess I am surprised the Braves stood up and said, break you hand in a fit of rage = no pay. I don’t have a problem with that at all. Maybe it is time to move on for both parties????
And I am amazed that Chipper vented so loudly about the umpiring. I do think he will get suspended for it.
From my perspective on TV, he appears to be correct, the umps were not good, but to say that out loud on the record to a reporter, WOW!!! Must have been worse than what I could see on TV.
Hope folks show up tonight an pull the Braves through!
Yes, it’s true that there are four teams ahead of the Braves in the Wild Card race. But again, all signs point to the Braves being at least as talented as those teams if not more so. The Braves probably have at least just as good a shot as those other teams of going on a hot streak that puts them in command of the Wild Card race.
And let’s not forget, the Braves accrued that +30 run differential with Francoeur, Kelly Johnson and Jordan Schafer getting a large chunk of plate appearances. Chances are they would be better than +30 if they had this lineup all season.
N8, I realize the Braves current budget limitations and why they have to settle for Kotchman at first for now. But I wouldn’t give him a pass on his lack of power production by grouping him with McCann.
I wonder if Kotchman’s lack of power production isn’t largely a function of his mental approach to hitting. He’s certainly big enough to hit the ball a long way and every now and then he does (like that drive over the center fielder’s head last night or a couple of recent home runs). I wonder how much his batting average would suffer if he focused more on getting pitches he could drive and taking a rip at them at least up to 2 strikes.
gonzalez might not be on the level of albert pujols, but he pretty comparable to someone like ryan howard…except while howard keeps declining, gonzalez keeps getting better, is younger, is cheaper, ect. i dont think im over valuing him at all by say he is worth a AA prospect whos OPSing in the .700s, and injured poorly performing outfield prospect, and a ceiling mid-rotation starter.
LUIS de LUNA continues to sparkle like the glinting diamonds on the waters of the CARIBBEAN. Now 59 innings into the DSL, he is dominating with a 1.07 ERA and 0.68 WHIP. A shining 8-1 record is enhanced by his 59-29 IP to H ratio, and the fact that he has 56 SO’s and only 11 BB. With almost a SO per inning, he’s looking good. He’s started 10 games so far, all on the road, and is lasting roughly six innings, excellente’. His results are 0.66 ERA in 41 IP, 16 H allowed, 3 ER, 8 BB, 35 SO, and a 1.16 GO/AO. He’s being used in home games as middle relief where in 5 G, he’s allowed 13 H in 18 IP, 3 BB and 21 SO’s.
Can someone post a way to find a clear video of this fist bump – I saw something on Youtube, but the camera was already turning the other direction so you couldn’t see much.

1) Give Norton is walking papers. How many times does this guy have to strike out or ground into a double play to understand he shouldn’t be there.
2) Send Diory Hernandez to the minors or at least let others play instead of him. Why couldn’t Prado play SS or move Johnson to SS and put Prado at second instead of Hernandez. If you’re not a pitcher, have more than 50 at bats, and can’t hit above .150 you need to go. Hence Hernandez and Norton should no longer be contributing to losses.
I think Hohn should be fined just like players are when the are unethical. He shouldn’t be allowed to work any other Braves games. Discriminatory jerk!!!
David O’Brien emailed me and said that he took care of the person who earlier today was using my name to make fake postings. Hopefully this wont happen again.
yes, LaRoche free agent after season. I forgot that he played only 110 games his rookie year because of the shoulder injury, but he got service time in that period when on DL

Just looking at his career numbers:
LaRoche is a .259 hitter with a .733 OPS before the All-Star break, and a .295 hitter with a .900 OPS after the break.
