I hate to say it after the fact but when Javier came out to face Cody Ross, I said he has pitched very well but his pitch count is over 100 so why not pitch Moylan. I had the feeling deep down that something bad would happen just like I did whem Mike Gonzalez came to the Mound, and unfortunately in both situation something bad occurred, as we gave up two runs. I am not sure why, but Bobby just does not seem to have the knack to make the changes that are necessary to ensure success. I would really love for him to walk away at the end of the season. I’m not advocating that the Braves keep Norton. I think he should have been gone a long time ago too. I’n just saying that Cox wanted to keep him because he did well as a PH in the past. Cox figures that as a verteran, he’ll come around….I guess.
I would rather see the Giants win. Despite what many of you may believe, I do not feel that the division is out of reach. If the Giants win tonight, the Braves will be 7 games out of first. The Giants will host the Phillies for 3 more games (the Giants are tough to beat at home). The Braves will have a chance to win all 3 games against the Dodgers this weekend. Plus the Braves still have 9 games left with the Phillies.
The Phillies are still a flawed team. Their bullpen is NO WHERE near where they were at last year. I feel that if the Braves can bring up Conrad to replace that BUM Greg Norton……..along with getting Infante back to replace Hernandez………then the Braves will be a tough team to beat……even if Frank Wren cant make a trade.
However, we need to strengthen up the bench. We cant afford to have BUMS on the bench.
Frank Wren:
You have done a great job so far, now you need to recall Brooks Conrad and send Norton packing, also can we not find a shortstop to backup Esco that plays D and can get a hit. I would like for the folks who ridiculed you in the Smoltz situation to now say how off they were. Good job Frank, please don’t give up our prospects like your predecessor use to do.
““I just get a bit frustrated with all the fair weather fans.”
Doesn’t their have to be “good times” for a fan to be considered fair weathered? This team is 52-50 and on an incredible run of consistently mediocre baseball.
So I’ll admit it. I’m fair weathered. I’ve been happy with the outcome 52 times and pizzed off 50 times. Shame on me.
Your response is the EXACT reason that I quit responding to you last month. Norton is a BUM! Hell no he isn’t a bum. He is a human being, who might be (you don’t have a frickin crystal ball, do you?) at the end of his string.
But if you were smart enough to study out a few things, you would see that his whole career has been up and down. Last year he was one of the best pinch hitters in baseball.
And you grade Kelly Johnson on ONE game!
You know, I think I had you pegged on my last post. Your a fantasy baseball guy, who wants players to NEVER cost you a point. You really think you know a lot about baseball, but the more you talk, the more I believe you know actually very little beyond your “points”.
Now that’s a lie. Paul grades Kelly Johnson on a lot of games, but just the ones he wants to.
“If you take 7 away Kelly’s bad months, he’s only hitting .248 over his career. But if tonight’s game was the first of the season, he’d be on pace to make 162 errors.”
Giants or Phillies. I will check the box scores at the end of the night, but I could care less on July 31st which one wins or loses. I guess if they split, that would be good. (they are probably playing 3, so a 2-1 either way would be OK)
Actually, I just think we should worry about how the Braves do, and let the rest sort themselves out.
dob seems you are taking up for the ump. maybe this is why a lot of the braves player real don’t care for you at all. still think ajc should replace you with bill shanks. he does a great job with in macon. you could learn a thing or too.
O.K. time for the geezer to hit the rack. Back in the a.m. Later. Oh, BTW, at MYRTLE in 96 games, CODY JOHNSON has 26 HR’s, 1 3B and 17 2B while SO 128 times with 51 BB in 339 AB’s and a .265 avg./.915 OPS.
It is a 4-game series between the Phils and Giants. The Braves are not going to catch the Phillies, so, Phillies winning the series would be a good thing–the best thing for the Braves.
Listen guys, the Braves need more than just one play. Bobby said after the game that he didn’t know when Prado and Escobar could play and Church can’t play, so you essentially have a two man bench of Norton and Ross. I fully expect the Braves to make two moves tomorrow, maybe DL Church and bring up Jones or Blanco and perhaps send a pitcher down to create an extra roster spot for either Conrad or Burke. Somebody would have to go on the DL though for Conrad to come back, because he hasn’t been back in the minors for the required 10 days
“It’s only that your misery, your anger, and your immaturity simply continues to astound me.”brewdawg
Misery? Not even close. Just not optimistic about our chances. The ones who are (homers), spew reasons why they are optimistic, I spew reasons why I’m not. At 52-50, almost a year since being as much as 4 games over .500 and almost 4 years (August 1st 2005), of playing .500 ball, recent history and current trends are on my side. If that comes across as me claiming “I’m right”, until the Braves prove me wrong….. I will be. Not arrogance. Just facts.
Anger and immaturity? Really? Wow. Dude. Seriously? The blog is filled with people talking about porn mustaches on the umpire. People calling Bobby “donkey”. Mets trolls talking about people’s mothers. A blog master that quotes The Big Lebowsky like it’s the bible. Among MANY (sorry, couldn’t resist the all-caps), other things that are much more immature than I ever get on this blog.
I might be the most sarcastic person here. I might use it too much. Much of it might go over many people’s head. But angry and immature? I’m not even in the top 25 most angry people on the blog, and I’m certainly more mature than many.
But if that’s how you feel. Fine by me. Just remember. You’re post opened up whatever anger I actualy had tonight. YOU were the one that attacked, causing me to tel you to shove something up your ass. I don’t name call, or toss offensive insults like that until provoked.
So if I’m immature for responding to you, than you’re right there for starting it. But then again, the referee always flags the 2nd guy, so perhaps I should have been the better man and walked away, huh?
Me and the missus have decided to head off for a long weekend. Been a hard year, and time for some R&R for her. I might not check in for a while, but I will be always lurking close by, so please be on your p’s and q’s.
Definitely Hohn should be penalized, and not be allowed to be the umpire in any other braves game. Poor Vazquez was denied a win once again but at least the Braves did win. Julio Teheran went 8 innings and struckout 11, impressive, I remember readind he could be the next pedro martinez.
I would rather see the Giants win. Despite what many of you may believe, I do not feel that the division is out of reach.
–
I too believe it’s not out of reach (it is a long shot though). I’ve already seen what they do when they win the division though, they make early exits. I want to see what they can do if they can get into the playoffs via the Wild Card. The WC teams has had good success in the playoffs recently and some have even won the world series a couple of times in recent years.
DOB, a slight correction to your game story on the Braves. Tonight was Kelly Johnson’s second start since his recall from AAA, he started Sunday Afternoon’s game and got three hits including a homer.
The Braves should trade both Kelly, and Norton for a reliever, and call up Conrad, and activate Infante when he is ready. In the mean time call up Brandon Jones.
D.O.B. Maybe talking on and off to the F.O. about any trades that might be progressing. Add to that he has a deadline to get the game coverage, quotes, story etc. to meet…
He can’t blog every hour on the hour at times like this…
A parting thought. If KJ were dealt tomorrow, Conrad is back up. We need some backup for Prado, in case he can’t make the bell tomorrow. I just don’t see KJ being dealt unless it is a real decent arm.
As our old COACH would say, MARK MY WORDS!!! Kelly Johnson WILL be a contributor for this team, if not dealt tomorrow for a pitcher (and I guess if he is dealt, then indirectly he would be contributing through the acquired player….)
Escobar said he thinks he’ll be out two to three days. Said “no” emphatically when asked if DL was possiblity.
Prado said he got extremely lucky when the line drive hit him just beside the ball of his inner left ankle bone. He wasn’t on crutches and scoffed when asked if he might be back by, say, Monday.
“Monday?” he said, raising his eyebrows. “Tomorrow, I hope.”
Tomas… Who would take a nearly 40 year old, washed up pinch hitter who is hitting .100? Lol… Only option is to DFA him… And then give him his unconditional release b/c no one will want him.
Very funny moment when Bowman and I were talking to Prado. I asked Prado who hit the line drive, and from a locker about 10 feet away, we hear someone say, “It wasn’t me, guys.”
That was Kelly Johnson, smiling. We laughed, and so did Prado, at least a little bit. (He’s a pretty serious dude, when it comes to playing baseball and injuries and possibly missing time.)
I never personally “attacked” you in that first post. It wasn’t even directed towards you. It was directed towards others who were arguing with you. I never said a bad word towards you. I’m afraid “He’s always right, even when he’s not” and “He’s only happy when he’s miserable”, then having a little fun by imitating one of your rants hardly qualifies as an attack.
Oh, and the Braves started 5-1 this year. So it hasn’t been “nearly a year” since they were four games over .500. And I remember a post you made earlier this year that said something along the lines of “Sorry folks, gotta say it. Donkey in the dugout.”
Wayne in Utah………Dude, I have said before that when I refer to a player as a BUM, I’m saying that he is a BUM at the plate.
When it comes to their demeanor off the field, I dont care if they are a BUM or a nice guy. That matters ZERO to me. All I care about is what they can do ON THE FIELD OF PLAY.
Also, are you really serious about me grading Kelly Johnson on “one bad game”? How about that SUCK A$$ .214 batting average in the first half? Or the number of bungled double plays and errors he has made while playing 2nd?
However, many people on here saw Kelly play on Sunday and JUDGED him to be “on the right track” from ONLY ONE GAME.
I bet it was Kelly, mwaaahh..Really Hope Prado is there tommorrow…its pretty obvious Kelly “hot” streak pretty much ended…he will have another by September..,maybe…
I think Escobar gets hit a lot because like Utley, he does stand close to the plate but it’s mainly because they stay on the ball so long and it makes it harder get out of the way. That’s what makes them good hitters. Hopefully he is back in a few days and we smack Schimdt tomorrow.
How in the world was Moylan not on the player of the game poll? He pitched around KJ and Diory’s bad plays and actually had two dp’s in the inning. He’s my player of the damn game, for sure.
Wayne in Utah:
Javier pitched well like he has done all year, I am one of his biggest supporter and thought the trade to bring him here was great when several others did not think so. I have more confidence in him than any other Braves Pitcher,( starter or Relief Pitcher)However his pitch count was over 100 at the time and he was pitching in Florida not in San Diego, or the North East where conditions may be better. Bobby always seem to make the wrong move.
KJ is a good kid, but Prado is a better baseball player (and given his circumstances, where he is supporting his family as he is, not a lot of room for humor when a potential injury happens – but Martin is always a team player).
Paul – just over exaggurating the fact that even though KJ has hit .280 over the past 2 seasons, you were picking and choosing which games to merit his ability. If you’ll recall your “I don’t understand why people love Kelly Johnson after he had ONE GOOD MONTH” rant where you took away an entire month’s worth of his stats.
he has, but it’s his weakest position in the infield. Lacking in range and a bit in arm too. He can fill in in an emergency., but I doubt it happens tomorrow unless he really gets a lot better over night. We’ll see
coach smith……………..I agree with you totally on Kelly. He will probably be non-tendered in the off season. Why risk paying him $4 mil next year through arbitration……..when the Braves can pay Prado $500,000K (who isnt eligible for salary arbitration next year). Our middle infield next year (Prado and Escobar) combined will be making BARELY $1 mil. What a bargain, lol.
Also 2 of our best starting pitchers (Hanson and Jurrgens) will be making BARELY $1 combined as well.
I think that it can be safe to assume that Kelly Johnson will be non-tendered in the off season.
jeffrey d………….I compared that ONE MONTH……..with how he did the other 5 MONTHS of the season. Do you really want a player who basically only shows up for ONE MONTH a season…….while sucking A$$ the other 5 months of the season?
Hopefuly yunel gets better by saturday………young kid, big kid, it might be hurting a lot tomorrow, but its summer and high temperatures might help, we might get lucky by saturday………..lets hope so.
Obviously we have NOTHING in common. For me, if the guy is a great player, and a total jerk. I want him the heck off my team. Life is too short to pull for jerks.
So, yes, when I say the Norton is a real decent guy, that is important to me. BTW, Conrad is an equally great guy.
So, I judge Kelly Johnson on 2.5 year worth of experience, and that fact that he was willing to switch to the outfield when the Braves asked, then switch AGAIN to second, when the Braves asked him. He has had bad months about 1/2 that time, and good months about 1/2 that time.
I don’t judge him as being a bad second baseman, because that is not his natural position. I also realize he is average there at best, as is Prado.
So, we are TOO different to really have much to say to each other. I guess what I am saying is that I will go back to scrolling past you from this point on.
You continue to remind me that you are the kind of person that I really don’t care to communicate with, to be honest.
I hope you score well on your fantasy team. Enjoy your fantasy life.
Id put Prado at SS no matter what…………Diory should not start those games……..Prado is athletic enough to at least cover the position fairly well………maybe below average, but we need his bat. Its not like he will drop the balls because he is at SS. He is young, it not like making garciaparra trying to move from 3b to RF.
So if the giants win this game we stay 4.0 games out in the WC and 7.0 in the east………..not good in any way………..Id rather see the phillies win this game.
Wayne completely agree with your 10:57 post. Before he came back out, I thought we should just pull him, and go to Gonzo and Soriano, but I knew if he did that people would rip him. Its a no-win situation for Cox, every game.
7 runs by SF…………how bad can this phillies pitching can be……….. and 1 run against good pitching…………that tells you what will be the luck of the phillies once they get into october baseball.
I heard some fans on this blog wrote that Kelly stated that the coach at Gwinett help him to correct some things, and immediately they started throwing TP under the Bus. However tonight all Kelly’s supporters got a chance to see that nothing has changed, plus he is a butcher at 2nd, if he is to stay there for any period of time the pitchers would surely lose confidence, therefore I will pray tonight that Prado is ready to go tomorrow and Bobby dont play the fool as usual. I use to be a big KJ fan but stopped after he dropped that pop up against Phillies and caused us to lose the game, plus several other misplay of routine ground balls that a person in the Majors should make. I still hope he will show some improvement because can still help in a pinch hit situation and we hope his D will improve especially with Prado edging him out.
i’m not surprised to see that Gonzalez was ineffective. He was used for the 7th time in 12 days since coming back from tendonitis in his pitching elbow – despite taking a line-drive off his forearm in those 12 days and being forced to take a couple days off.
Why don’t we play Ross at SS? He couldn’t be that bad, could he?
I am playing with you, my friend. If Prado were good enough to play there more than just and emergency, do you think Diory would have ever made it to Atlanta? Never woulda happened.
I think Kelly might be more apt to play SS than Marteen.
Wayne in Utah…………you can keep rooting for decent guys who are medicore players at best. I’ll keep rooting for players who will help us WIN ballgames.
Nothing personal, but I dont need to root for NICE GUYS. I dont pay $200 a season for the right to watch “nice guys” play baseball on Direct TV. I pay because I enjoy watching the Braves play baseball. And part of what makes it enjoyable (at least for me) is to see the Braves have a fighting chance to win ball games.
There are always “church softball leagues” that are full of nice guys to root for.
Hell, if the Braves were willing to pay me $2.875 mil to play baseball, I’d learn to play any position they wanted me to learn. You act like Kelly should be considered “special” because he was willing to learn multiple positions. ITS HIS JOB.
If Kelly Johnson was a SUPERSTAR, then maybe he wouldnt have to learn multiple positions in order to stay in the Majors.
Paul, usually I agree with you, but I disagree on the Kelly thing. I think he will be back next year or at least resigned. First of all, if I remember correctly he is making under 2.5 this year and he lost his starting job. So I doubt he gets 4, my guess between 3 and 3.5. Secondly I think at the very least they would offer him arbitration and then trade him. If they dont offer arbitration then they dont even get picks, and Im sure there are several teams that would be willing to give up a middle reliever or prospect at least for him. Thats better than nothing.
Eric from MO………..I actually agreed with Bobby’s decision to stay with Vazquez to start the 8th inning. Vazquez has shown throughout the season that he can grind it out. He just didnt today in the 8th inning. However, in this situation I cant blame Bobby for that.
I’d do it again if the same situation came up in his next start.
For his sake, I hope like heck that Prado doesn’t drop a pop up or two. You’ll be on him like white on rice, huh! (when he doesn’t get to balls he should, just stick your head in the sand, that way you won’t have to leave your fantasy world.)
Paul you go sit an the corner after you wash your mouth out with soap!
Paul sometimes you say outrageous things, some I agree with and some I don’t. But to get talked down to for calling Norton a bum! Priceless!
That’s some of the mildest laguage on here. And everyone knows you were referring to his current hitting abilities and not whether or not he helps little old ladies across the street!

Interesting that you would mention the pitch count. If Bobby hadn’t put him back out there, others would be saying he pulled him too fast.
As a manager, you never win. If you do something right, it was the PLAYERS who did it. If you do something wrong, half the fans blame YOU!

Paul,
Your response is the EXACT reason that I quit responding to you last month.
That’s what I think.

“It’s only that your misery, your anger, and your immaturity simply continues to astound me.” brewdawg

I too believe it’s not out of reach (it is a long shot though). I’ve already seen what they do when they win the division though, they make early exits.
