Eric – Hanson was lights out in the Arizona fall league, he has been unhittable in all minor league levels. Scheafer was coming off a 50 game HGH suspension, his attitude was questionable, and he never really “tore it up” in the minor leagues. I’d say Scheafer was a bigger gamble than Hanson!

You are a blogger that must be scrolled past, as you seem to be a stranger to logic.
Lou, I’m not an economist and my finances are, well…let’s just say that “Sally Mae” is in my vocabulary. Anyway, I don’t care about my finances or anyone else’s when I say that. Baseball isn’t a typical business and the definition of fair market value changes accordingly. KK is an average pitcher, and that’s about 2 wins above replacement. According to Dave Cameron, teams paid 4.5MM per win last season. Hence, an average pitcher is worth 2 wins (IIRC) or 9MM. Right or wrong, that’s how the numbers work, and I’m not going to debate the ethics or right or wrong of it because frankly I don’t care. If they make that much then good for them.
ncscoots, I NEVER talk about being rich and I NEVER talk about 12 million dollars like it is nothing. What do I have to do with Larry? I said I had NOWHERE near these figures and suggested I can’t even comprehend the blase reaction to these amounts–how am I Larry like?? 15, 12, 8, 6, 3, 2 million dollars is a HELL of a lot of money and I respect that fact and especially when people receiving it don’t warrant it with performance commensurate with that amount. How am I Larry??
Abreu and Dunn would both be options, almost no one was interested in Abreu, not sure why, maybe he has an attitude behind the scenes or something? Dunn is having a career year, good average, low K’s, and still hitting for great power, don’t think anyone saw that coming (and with his “worse than Loaf” defense most saw him as a liability). So two possible guys, but we’d still have JoJo every 5th and would have taken a gamble (as far as performance goes) with any of the three. And neither bat signed till almost the very end of the off season; they ended up signing much cheaper than what we could have gotten them for when we signed KK.
wjones, get back to us when he earns his 8 million dollars by going to the 6th inning and beyond more often than not.
Besides. Didn’t you read DOB’s intro to the blog? The Braves didn’t give him that money to be a “5th starter”, they envisioned him as a #3 starter.
If KK was making about 2-3 million dollard, he would be a FANTASTIC 5th starter, middle reliever, spot starter type of guy. But he’s not. He was given 24 million dollars over the next 3 years.
Too expensive to put in the bullpen. Not affective enough to not tax the bullpen every 5th day, and not worth alienating other Japanese “prospects” from signing with Atlanta by trading. Wren and Bobby are in a pickle due to that signing.
We’ll see what happens when Hudson comes back.
But KK is nothing more than a glorified middle reliever that can eat some innings right now. He would make an incrdible relief pitcher with his bag o’ pitches he could bring to the table. But not for 8 million per.
Great day to be a Philly fan. We have a very talented major league roster and still kept your 3 best prospects. It’s a good feeling when you have a better minor league system and a better major league team than any of the other teams in the division. Long term success.
I like KK. I like the way he pitches and I like his demeanor. Fact is he would be far more appreciated on the West Coast where they would have a larger Japanese community…say Seattle. If I’m not mistaken wasn’t he the winning pitcher in the game with Toronto when we beat Haladay? I know he won one of those games.
Hey Dave, nice to see you’re still propping up GA. Yes he can hit…last night he accounted for the two runs the Marlins scored as well as knocking in two of ours, and don’t try to tell me he ‘lost the ball in the lights’. He loafed like he always does.
Really – I can’t believe there are people that bash Kawakami. I can’t believe you watch the games. Oh, wait – you don’t, because he’s “boring”.
Will it help ease the pain if you found out that the trio of Hanson, Jurjjens and Kawakami make (combined) roughly $8.5 MM this year? Does that make it all better?
Just saw SD is looking to unload Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell. As much as I like Kotchman (and I do), I feel like those two players are exactly what the Braves could use. That said, I’m sure they’re tired of dealing with Kevin Towers.
It’s a good feeling when you have a better minor league system and a better major league team than any of the other teams in the division.
Better major league team? Certainly. Better system? Probably not anymore. Let’s see…Heyward/Freeman>Taylor/Brown, and the Braves have much more pitching depth than the Phillies do. Drabek might be better than anyone we currently have, but that’s only because we just graduated Hanson.

Steve, I’m not talking about ethics of people paying or receiving the money. I’m just amazed that with a near 10% unemployment rate and worse in the Rust Belt, HOW do people throw these numbers around like it is nothing. People respond to the bonuses paid to corporate executives, they respond to money paid to surgeons, I find it incomprehensible to not at least, a few times a day,–mention as you did–that this is like NO other business in America. No other business in America has guaranteed contracts that insure Mike Hamptons or Carl Pavanos occasionally showing up. It is crazy and you said it. That is all I wanted to read–ONCE!!!

Leave it to the Mets fans to keep moving the goalposts. If you think the Mutts are catching the Braves your either high or stupid
Did those numbers come in for ya?? Haven’t heard from you yet today. I am starting to wonder if you and the missus are off jet-setting with half my cash???
Anders, Ha no just thinking out loud. Let me ask you though if you were Omar would you be buying or selling in the next couple of days? Good luck doing either my friend.
Lidge is going to be fine. You’re going to have to make another trade for a closer and you will probably trade Heyward/Freeman cuz you have no depth. Philly in 2010, 2011, and so on
If the Braves trade Kawakami, then who is going to live in Bow-wow’s crib? (brent a.)
DOB has been “lobbying” for it. It’ll all come out in the press conference when Wren announces how he “had” to trade KKK because of the furor created on DOB’s blog about KKK etc….
There are 750 people on the planet who can play Major League Baseball at any given time. Since they produce large revenues for the teams that employ them, they can command much higher salaries than other occupations that employ many more people. That’s basic supply-and-demand economics, which I thought you’d be familiar with.
Sigh this blog started off like a really cool thing. But like most things on the net it didnt take long before it got popular and the retards took over. Now its all Bobby sux Kawacrappy etc etc. Some are so dumb they confuse a dumb nickname with actually making a point.
The fanboys have officially taken over and real baseball discourse has taken a hit as a result. Id say 99% of you know almost nothing about the game. Kind of sad.
“wjones, get back to us when he earns his 8 million dollars by going to the 6th inning and beyond more often than not.

But KK is nothing more than a glorified middle reliever that can eat some innings right now. He would make an incrdible relief pitcher with his bag o’ pitches he could bring to the table. But not for 8 million per.”
You are right, AT THE TIME he was signed as a #3 starter. Vazquez, Jurrjens, Kawakami, …….
Negotiations were going on with Smoltz and Glavine, knowing that they probably would not be ready until summer at least. So at that point #4 & #5 were going to be some mix of Charlie, Jo Jo, Hanson, Campillo, or whoever they could pull out of a hat. Then Smoltz signs with Boston, and the next day they get Lowe. Now Kawakami is a #4. Or if you want to say he’s a #3 and JJ is #4 that’s ok, too. But remember JJ is making minimal money, so we’re still ok, and Lowe & Vazquez are making money to be #1 & #2. So we struggle along with #5, do without give away some starts to Jo Jo, we get him injured, call up Medlen, give him a couple, send Glavine around the world, release him, and finally call up Tommy. He, by his performance, moves HIMSELF up to #4, with a bullet! So now our #3 and #4, by their own spectacular performances, are not only good but extremely cheap! So we pay more now for a #5 than “market” should indicate. But I counter that he’s not a #5 because of underperformance, but by two young and talented pitchers leap-frogging over him, much the way Glavine, Avery and Smoltz did to Charlie Leibrandt years ago. Charlie still won 15 games, but now he’s being compared to young guns. Same with KK. Now we have a rotation of, what, $38 million? Our “weak link” has a 3.20 ERA since May, has battled Roy Halliday and Johann Santana pitch for pitch. If we overpay for a #5, simply because we have such good & cheap #3 & #4, and we can get dependable performances from 1-5 on a consistent basis, then we have absolutely no reason to complain. Yes, Hudson’s salary will be a problem to solve in the offseason, and someone will have to go, maybe two someones, depending on budget constraints. But can we at least look around the league and see how good we have it in our starting pitching?
Bravoman – I want Omar to be all in for Halladay – period. Trade the farm. Santana, Halladay at the top. Pelfrey and Ollie. K-Rod closing. Reyes, Wright and Beltran in their primes. That biiiggg ball park. I’ll take my chances. Especially now that the Phillies are loading up for a couple of years.
Kawakami is still adjusting to Major League Baseball. Part of the reason people are so hard on him is that he needed to be perfect to win most of the games because of poor run support. If he throws strikes he is a #3, when he doesn’t he is a number 5.
Lidge is going to be fine. You’re going to have to make another trade for a closer and you will probably trade Heyward/Freeman cuz you have no depth. Philly in 2010, 2011, and so on
Yeah the worst franchise in MLB history is going to go on a run. LOL.
Some bloggers don’t care about the facts(ERA,WHip) when it comes to KK. Give the dude 4 runs of support per game and he would be matching or exceeding Lowe in wins. Then we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. Did everyone really expect him to come over and in his 1st year(actually 4 months) pitch better than he has? Based on what? Money given? How long has D.Lowe been in the league? KK’s stats are better than Lowes except for wins. Go look up Dice K’s first year numbers and see how great he was. I believe he was more highly touted and paid more, but he wan’t good his 1st year.Just don’t get the dissing from a few!
I see that the blog has attracted another TROLL = Philly Insider Douche!
TROLL, tell me how does it FEEL knowing you have at MAXIMUM a 2 year window of NL success? Does it bother you at night, knowing that NO later than 2011 ALL of the people with baseball knowledge project the Braves to be MORE talanted than your Phillies and SET up for another run at dominating the NL EAST?
Enjoy TROLL…by 2011 you’ll be 3rd best in the NL East behind the Braves and Marlins.
The Phillies fans need to be concerned. Most experts don’t see the Phillies being able to keep Ryan Howard because of his contract demands. Brad Lidge is a head case. Rollins is up and down. Peter Gammons said Utley needs to be concerned long term about the health of his hip.
If Omar were not such an abject doofus in choosing free agent role players to fill out the roster, adding Halladay to your rotation would be pretty doggone impressive.
The Phillies fans need to be concerned. Most experts don’t see the Phillies being able to keep Ryan Howard because of his contract demands. Brad Lidge is a head case. Rollins is up and down. Peter Gammons said Utley needs to be concerned long term about the health of his hip.
********************
That’s why the TROLL Phillies Insider needs to enjoy his 2 year window until 2011.
Like the idea of seeing he, Gearrin and Valdez in the pen in the future…Steve from OH
Me too. But, I’m most excited about Kimbrel. I’ve never seen him pitch, but I hear he has a nasty slider and he throws hard from a 3/4 arm-slot. I’m not only excited, but I’m interested to see how he deals…and I do mean deals.
Dice K isn’t good this year. I think he was better in his second year. pretty good in his 1st year and now crappy in his third year. Does this mean KK will have a junior jinx?
TBrown, watch your language, kids read this you stupid piece of trash.
CrazyTrades, maybe if you were productive at work instead of blogging at the office, your company could afford to pay the power bill, cornhole!
Dude the guy just found out he was seriously sick and losing arm strength. He was a solid Long man last year and he’ll be a good part of our pen down the stretch.

RHR – I’ve set a different goal. Right now I just want to pass and stay ahead of the Braves. I mean, they’re right behind the Braves with a team that is in shambles. If the Mets pass the Braves before the calvary starts to come back from the DL you folks got some ’splainin to do.
Leave it to the Mets fans to keep moving the goalposts. If you think the Mutts are catching the Braves your either high or stupid

DOB has been “lobbying” for it. It’ll all come out in the press conference when Wren announces how he “had” to trade KKK because of the furor created on DOB’s blog about KKK etc….

Lou Vales,
There are 750 people on the planet who can play Major League Baseball at any given time. Since they produce large revenues for the teams that employ them, they can command much higher salaries than other occupations that employ many more people. That’s basic supply-and-demand economics, which I thought you’d be familiar with.

Jason Heyward will be better than any of the players you have on the roster by 2011.

“wjones, get back to us when he earns his 8 million dollars by going to the 6th inning and beyond more often than not.

Kawakami is still adjusting to Major League Baseball. Part of the reason people are so hard on him is that he needed to be perfect to win most of the games because of poor run support. If he throws strikes he is a #3, when he doesn’t he is a number 5.

The Phillies fans need to be concerned. Most experts don’t see the Phillies being able to keep Ryan Howard because of his contract demands. Brad Lidge is a head case. Rollins is up and down. Peter Gammons said Utley needs to be concerned long term about the health of his hip.

Me too. But, I’m most excited about Kimbrel. I’ve never seen him pitch, but I hear he has a nasty slider and he throws hard from a 3/4 arm-slot. I’m not only excited, but I’m interested to see how he deals…and I do mean deals.
