I didnt watch the whole thing unfold but was listening on radio and both Jim Powell and Don Sutton were outraged by his behavior. Ofcourse, they are “home” commentators but still I think their outrage went above and beyond the teams concerned. If this somehow doesnt get looked at by MLB it will be a crime against the sport. However if they do, it might be a silent thing and we might not even catch it. For a while now, umps have some sort of unionized domination and its gotten out of hand now with characters like Hohn and Angel Hernandez, all prima donnas of umpiring.
A “professional” like Baker should have been aware Hohn did NOT have a “good game” and just left it at that. I’ll bet Chipper looked at it as salt in the wound. That’s as pissed off as I’ve seen Chipper in some time.
I don’t know if anyone noticed, but on McCann’s DP he went WAY OUT of the baseline to go after Hanley Ramirez.
Baker should have just ran out to the pitcher and left it at that.
I’m looking for more fireworks tomorrow. Was right about today’s ejection but I don’t think it’s over.
Since nobody will refute the batting cage or the bed I’m going to say Good Night and be well. I’m going to go by Mikey for a whole day and see how people react. Even Bobby Kennedy was not a bad use of a childhood name, but I bet Jack Kennedy would not have gone by Skippy if that had been a boyhood nickname.
Great post about Chipper on the double play. I thought the same thing. I’d never seen him slide like that during a double play before. he went hard and a few feet away from the bag
Obviously everyone including myself will have to wait and see how those prospects turn out but it has been said by a view who chimed in on the trade have said that Jason Donald might end up as a super utility guy and that Marson might be above average and that Carrasco hasn’t put it all together yet and that it is too early to determine what Knapp might be. The point is that not all “Top Prospects” turn out to be as good as there suppose to be.
D’backs currently leading 3-0. In the prev inning, it was 2nd and 3rd, no outs for the Phillies. Werth ( he of the 20 RBIs in July fame) came to the platye and promptly struck out. The next guy struck out too. They had bases loaded 2 outs and still did not score. So apparently these things happen even to the best teams.
Can I take a stab at your question as to whether the Braves should stand pat after the Giants moves???

come on you all really fell for the “i think we have a chance at the wildcard” bit? When will you people ever learn? Why do yo punish yourself so? You all knew deep in your heart before the season began there was no chance, what makes you think so now. just look forward to next year and hope we can spoil somebodies season along the way
That is confusing. The last sentence, “hope we can spoil somebodies season…”
Forgive me for assuming based on the screen name that you are a Met or Philly fan. I mean Atlanta Cowards, a) we’re cowards? and b) we’re not cowards. I don’t get it.
Also, how exactly do we punish ourselves? Another thing, it wasn’t until the last couple of weeks that I started to believe we might possibly make the playoffs but you know, if we don’t, it wouldn’t be torture. We have a chance to play meaningful games in at the end of the season. That’s awesome. I for one do not believe that losing two in a row or three out of four suddenly puts us out of contention for the Wild Card.
But then you said “we” can spoil… you’re not actually a Braves fan after all are you? No, probably just a Philly guy with 6th grade reading level who is a drunk retard.
Disappointed in the effort of the Braves hitters the last 2 nights, outside of Anderson and Kotchman, not much going on. THought we had turned the corner with the tipping the hat business. Arguably the 2 biggest games of the year so far and we fall flat. Whats wrong with scoring early and often like we had been?
Chipper can do whatever he wants but as others on this Blog have said if I’m a guy who gets dinged rather easily, I’m not going around to initiate contact. The man has NEVER been in a brawl–has he??–and no telling what could happen if people are actually trying to hurt him. Now he may be a combo Ali/Frazier,however, evidence does not point in that direction.
Would be fun for Bobby to actually have team start something. Especially since they have notoriously turned the other cheek more than Mother Teresa.
Neither team will make the Playoffs so suspensions aren’t going to ultimately hurt.

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it but when BMac got toseed Ross comes in, and I believe the 1st or 2nd hitter took a pitch that looked like it had the outside corner at the kness but it was called a ball. You could see Ross hold the throw back to the mound( a double pump) like where was that? THen I could tell Ross was saying something and the ump was saying something back, I believe the next pitch was fouled back and Ross stuck his glove out for the ump to stick a ball in it but instead the ump purposely threw the ball back to the pitcher and Ross just stood there in disbelief.
cabravesfan – I was wondering where you went to – it was lonely without you, given the constant rehashing of the negative aspects of the evening (although in other ways it was like you had never left).
The A Bomb, I’m definitely not doubting you, but as you said it is completely out of character for a guy who is usually as meek as a sheep in a Mother Goose rhyme.
I’ve seen Hohn do this for years — I’ve asked DOB to see if he remembers Hohn’s MEMORABLE performance in Atlanta several years back when he must’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed and with a wet towel around his neck, eject several Braves including Cox.
He just wants to be the show — just like in Boston and tonight. Horrible.
Those two are really the largest drag on this lineup, for sure. The other players are playing exactly to the levels that they are capable of playing. Chipper and Mac have got to get untracked, or you will be dead on.
As positive a Braves fan as I am, I am also a realist. I would love to see them catch fire tomorrow and make a strong play, but if it doesn’t happen, I won’t be overly surprised either.
Vazquez wins tommorrow night that puts the braves at 52-50, if they can take 2 out of 3 from the struggling dodgers then the braves are 54-51. The braves then play the padres, the PADRES so the braves should sweep them that puts the braves at 57-51. Then comes a big 4 game set with the dodgers that should pit the dodgers best vs. the braves best. I personally like our rotation better in that scenario so depending on if they go 3 out of 4 or at worst split then the braves could be either 60-52 or 59-53. The POINT is that the braves just need to regroup and go back to doing what they had during the recent surge. The braves will be fine in the race for the playoffs.
Actually, most of my relatives are in South Carolina! Present spouse count is 5, 1 that cooks, another that cleans, a third that washes my fleet of sports cars, a fourth one that takes care of all my bidnez stuff, and a purty one that is there for….well, I am too modest to talk like that!
But I am always on the look out for new candidates.
(I actually used to kid my wife when she turned 40, that I was going to trade her in for 2 20 year olds. She thinks I am funny!)
Mikey, I genuinely don’t know what you’re talking about.
But you know, he hasn’t missed a whole lot of games this year other than when he’s taken the day off so I’m not sure the whole injury thing is completely relevant.
If he hadn’t injured himself in spring training in ‘94 he probably wouldn’t have all these problems. I’d be willing to bet he plays through a lot more pain than any of us would ever know.
If he handn’t missed the ‘94 season he’d probably be a lot closer to 500 homeruns also.
uga-brave….. WHEN WAS THAT GAME? That’s the game everyone needs to see or look at to see what this guy’s all about. That was the start of Cox vs. Hohn.
I already said — Chipper takes an early exit, Prado to 3B and Kelly Johnson gets to play. Maybe even Mac goes if there’s a check swing.
Not sure if anyone saw it, but Thurston got a pinch hit double for St. Louis in the bottom of the 12….then was called out on an appeal after missing 1st base.
Gonna go play soccer with some friends. Everyone have a good night (especially you cabraves). I hope this game is still on when I’m done. I wanna see every pitcher on both these teams holding their arms by sunrise.
Bill Hohn @ 3rd.
Javy better not allow any runner on 2nd. ‘cos stealing 3rd might be a very good option for the Marlins tomorrow. No way will we get an out there unless Chipper lies down in the basepath blocking the bag to tag the runner.
I’m really anticipating this “Smackdown” tomorrow. A hostile, angry Chipper Jones will be totally out of character for the fraternizingguy I have seen before games. He almost appears to want to stretch with the other team. Looking forward to him sliding really hard into second and maybe even couple of guys getting buzzed. The Braves have probably wanted to lose the Goody Two Shoes act for years but have been restarined by the Skipper who knows it is a slippery road once you start down it. When you do it for the first time try it with a team with a similiar mental bent when it comes to conflict. In other words, don’t start it with Tampa Bay.
OK…somebody who has McCann’s “ear” needs to tell him that….IF…he doesn’t like hitting vs the “shift” …ALL…he has to do is push a couple of bunts up the 3B line… THAT simple… Pick a time when you’re leading off the inning…or a situation like tonight …down 3 with Chipper on 1B and no outs.
Even if you fail and it goes foul…no big deal…..just make sure you don’t push it back to the pitcher…just get a couple of them “down”….and you probably NEVER have to worry about the “shift’ costing you a hit in the future….
PS: One tip…Bunt it HARD…(That way..pitcher and catcher are NEVER a factor)
What does Heyward need to do for you to be convinced that he is ready
Get more playing time under his belt. Quite frankly, 20 games is not enough to tell me anything about a player, good or bad. The dude has 20 games above A ball. 20. Just think about that for a sec.
Plus, call me crazy, but I’m of the belief that calling up a 20-year old kid during a pennant race and expecting him to not struggle whatsoever (hey, you’re bringing him up to produce right now and win win win, right?) is foolish, no matter how much of a complete stud he is right now. I’ll be excited to see him if they do call him up, don’t get me wrong, but I have my reservations and I’d be much more comfortable seeing it in June of 2010.
I haven’t posted on the blog in a while, but I read it daily with an interest that varies between skimming over DOB’s entries and reading every post. After watching a second losing, although encouraging, effort against the Fish tonight, I did my nightly perusing of MLBTR and check the minor league box scores. I thought I’d share some players that are hot in the Brave’s farm system.
Jason Heyward, of course, makes the list. He’s hitting .443 in 20 games since his promotion with 15 extra base hits, including 3 HR. His OPS of 1.295 monstrous.
Adam Milligan (LF-Rome). His numbers this season between Danville and Rome: 0.375 AVG, 8 HR, 24 RBI, 1.085 OPS in 33 games. Has not had much success stealing bases (1 for 4).
Mycal Jones (SS-Danville). Sure, i know, it’s only rookie ball. But Mycal is 14-38 (0.368) in his last 10 games. Of the 14 hits, 11 went for extra bases, and 3 left the park. He’s 7-7 in stolen base attempts this year.
The “fist bump” could have been the catcher thanking the umpire for working together for the night. Do players shake hands with the refs before a basketball game…both sides. If a team is out in the lobby when the refs leave…they still shake their hands…win-or-lose.
I think Joe Simpson would still find fault with a game if a Braves pitcher threw a perfect game..striking out 27 straight batters; hit four grand slams yet he would still find fault.
It was entertaining in the top of the ninth when Simpson said “they’re not going away quietly” when the batter got to third base…two looking strikes and one swinging strike later…he didn’t say a thing. Put Joe and Jim Powell to doing the tv broadcasts…put Simpson to managing the team so they can go 162-0 because every single pitch he has figured out what to do.
Marlins already had some issues in L.A. on Sunday so they’re well prepared. I can’t remember the last big Braves brawl but I think something like that would pull this team together.

Separated at birth. . . Bill Hohn and the Cincinnati Reds mascot
Classic.
Just indulging in a little Utah humor Wayne. Hey, aren’t you glad now that we know Obama is not an American citizen. You can’t blame him for anything anymore. He’s a Kenyan. What could he possibly know about the American economy?
Kidding.
Also, I like Mikey saying “coitus.” I thought that was funny. Well done Mike.
Hey, can you tell the “It’s outta here” guy to stop calling our former right fielder “Jeff Francur.” It’s irritating.
I would be nervous to bring him up. He’s been so successful everywhere he’s been that he hasn’t really had to face any adversity. I just don’t think it would be smart is all…
Jones was a JuCo guy, Wayne, but he’s 22, pretty old for Danville. I’d like to move him up, but he’s also supposedly pretty raw, so maybe a full season at Danville would be good for him…
cabravesfan – how unusual – giving up for the evening before me. Tom is an expert on sleep issues – I’m sure he can help you out (unless there’s a specific cause beyond his control). Good luck sleeping tonight, my dear.
I used to think bringing up Heyward would be good. But I’ve changed my mind.
We cannot ruin him the same way we ruined Joey Devine. He is potentially the face of the franchise but I strongly believe he needs to be brought up at the same time as some of his minor league buddies such as Freeman, etc. . . Bring them up together. The Braves did it with some of the guys in the late ’80s and early ’90s and we saw the results. Don’t bring Heyward up as THE GUY. It could have a devastating effect.
John i’m sure Mac would have tried to bunt tonight if Josh Johnson wasn’t on the mound. Hardest thing to bunt is a goof fastball. Don’t need to see Mac getting hurt again trying to bunt.
And Mets Mikey you still don’t make sense. What are you trying to get at? Chipper got hurt in a batting cage, whoop de doo. Strange injuries never happen to professional athlete’s. Are you happy now. Now go to bed and don’t let the bed bugs bite. Oh, if you’re in New York, make that rats.
Yeah i was wondering who was gonna catch if ross got tossed, diaz was already used.
I’ve got no problems with bringing up a few talented rookies and hoping they’ll produce provided they’re in with a mix of vets…and we’d have that if we called up Schafer, Heyward and Freeman at some point next year with McLouth, Chipper, Yunel, Marteen and Mac, plus our great staff.
I suppose I shouldn’t say “vets,” but “proven regulars,” but you get my point.
Though a lineup of McLouth, Schafer, Heyward, Jones, Escobar, Prado, Freeman and McCann would be a tough one to make…which order would you bat them in?
‘Tis a great bit, but includes pornographic material (and I’m all about respect, and couth, and the children), so hopefully, you folks’ve already seen it.
There are always exceptions to every rule. I think realistically the Braves next year could rely on Heyward and be fine, but you can’t honestly tell me that you think the team would be fine if they were to rely on Heyward, Freeman, and Schafer all at the same time, can you? Add to that group Hanson and Medlen. Yes, they’re all very, very talented, but look at Arizona…they had all those young guys and had that one great year and have struggled since.
A Bomb–that’s probably the best way, though I prefer Schafer leading off to McLouth, because I think he projects to have better on-base skills…but that one keeps the lefties from getting too bunched up.

Thanks for reading.
Go Braves...and take Atlanta with you!
