I don’t care who has been calling GA ‘loaf’ or for how long and it doesn’t matter as now I’m calling out whoever repeats it. My mistake was letting those things slide. By doing that, those comments take root. No one ever mentions the calf injury he had early in the season or his age or the fact that we didn’t sign him because he was a Gold Glover. Let’s just appreciate GA for what he delivers—something I’m trying to do with Kotchman — whoo-hoo, great homer, dude! — instead of focusing on his propensity for the single and overall lousy slugging percentage compared to other 1B who also play good defense (and no I’m not just talking about Albert).

Bobby is not the only manager who uses closers late in meaningless situations. Charlie Manuel bringing in Brad Lidge for the ninth with a seven run lead. Scared of Pujols hitting two grand slams with Holliday and DeRo supporting him

But I do think he is expendable, especially once Infante returns and with the emergence of Conrad as serviceable at 2nd.

Of course that was the first game of his career with three doubles. Brian usually has about one or two a week.

All i’m Saying is…. call me out idc i like to call him Loaf that Nickname has stuck , thats the only reason i call em that i like “Loaf” alot and was one of the few supporters of his when we signed him. all we heard from most is he is old and cant field and doesnt hit for power and is slow. But they were wrong. 2 million well spent

Paul Lentz

Rob from SC………you cant realistically expect a player to play 162 games where he hits 2 doubles and a homer, every singe time out.

Good players are going to have stretches where they struggle. That is why you havent heard me say ANYTHING about sitting McLouth, Chipper, McCann or Escobar when they have struggled this year.

Actually I like seeing Gonzalez being used in the 7th. I think that Bobby possibly wants to see if Gonzalez was affected by the hit on the elbow on Thursday…..yet do so with a lead like he has now. If Gonzalez breezes through, it’s a good indication. If he struggles, he can yank him and bring in another reliever.

Either way, Bobby needs to see what Gonzalez has.

Steve from OH: “Very average offense” — Clearly you have not been watching our outfielders perform all year. GA is all world compared to what we were (not) getting from Frenchy and Schafer and he still is our most consistent performer at the plate compared to Church and McLouth (and don’t get me wrong, I am so happy we have Nate). I still think, one race or another, all the Braves have to do is continue winning series and the rest will take care of itself. People that say they have to sweep to get in, is just patently not true. Assuming the Braves win the game today, that will be three sucessive series wins after the All Star break–a record of 8-3. That’s pretty good, and they weren’t any sweeps in there.

If you take it back to the Braves lowest point in the season, 6 games under .500 at 34-40, there has only been 1 series sweep and the Braves will be at 51-48 at the end of the day (assuming the win today), which is a record of 17-8 in that span. I can live with that type of win-to-lose ratios for the rest of the year. That kind of play will make it tough on any of the teams competing for a playoff spot against the Braves.

Paul Lentz

July 26th, 2009
4:19 pm

Steve from OH …….you sure like to “pick your spots” when you use your “above average player” analysis for Kelly Johnson. You also use last year’s stats to back up Bobby keeping Greg Norton around.

However, you conveniently forget about Garret’s 16 year body of work. Dude struggled for just 1 month this year. Kelly SUCKED for 3 months. Garret has been hitting the ball since Kelly Johnson was in grade school.

You bring up Kelly’s “wrist injury”, yet you fail to mention about Garret’s hamstring issues.

Garret has been hitting the ball for almost 3 months now. Kelly, 2 hits since his return, lol. WOW.

You can appreciate a BUM like Kelly Johnson, yet not someone that has almost 2,500 hits?
